    Gaming / LotRO:

        The Mirkwood expansion is out!
To go to Mirkwood, one must do Book 9. The vendors open up after completing the Foreward, and there's a handy boat for returning to Lorien before then.
To do some of the chapters requiring skirmishes, one must pass the skirmish tutorial and pick up a soldier to help in them. The skirmish system surprised us by being very fun, although it takes a little thought and exploration to figure it out. Members have been coming back to LotRO in large numbers to investigate, so it's like a reunion.

Welcome to the Valar Guild, Elemmírë-(V)!
Elemmírë met us in LotRO through Melkor, who brought her into the kin as an initiate using the name of Sulorienn, a rune-keeper. Varda tested. Elemmírë used to play Morrowind but now plays LotRO only. She's from Pennsylvania, USA in the EST. She's 66 with 2 children and is lucky enough to have grandchildren. She used to be a college instructor. Tolkien books that she's read are the H, LotR, and Sil. Her favorite two LotR characters are Galadriel (fond of mage types) and Elrond, for being both a caring father (as he was to Arwen and for taking in young Aragorn when he lost his father) and a hero in battle.

Varda-(Valar): What is the meaning of Legolas' name?
    * Tolkien discussion on a conundrum:
Indis-(V): The elves are widely known as Eru's Firstborn, even to the Ents. However, I believe it's Gandalf who describes the Ents to Theoden as a power that walked the world before the Elves or any other sentient peoples. The ents are sentient, so how do we reconcile the inconsistency. Eru in fact made the ents in response to Yavanna's plea, so in a way, they're children of Eru as well.
We decided that one-half of it was ok with lore, but the other half was questionable.

    Membership news:
Welcome to our newest gaming member from LotRO!
He's hoping to use the name of Boromir-(V), but has others in reserve. We are trying to contact the previous Boromir-(V) again to see if he would like to keep his name. The new member uses these names on LotRO: Grimsveld, Boromhir. He's from Quebec, Canada and is 20 years old and married. He picked up the LotRO game a few days ago and is hooked.
He's read the LotR and Sil, and is currently re-reading LotR. His favorite LotR character is Boromir because of the idea of the Ring corrupting him for even though he had good intentions, he still craved power, but then the reader realizes that he was a good man all along.

Welcome to the Valar Guild, Malbeth-(V)!
Malbeth joined as a Full Member in LotRO this evening. He's been a guild-friend nearly as long as LotRO has been live, and is often seen in the friend channel as Etheron. He came to LotRO from Dark Age of Camelot with the Keepers of Ayrshire (Dis-V is one of the two leaders) but now plays only LotRO due to time constraints. He plays almost every evening and on weekends if the weather is bad. He's read the H and LotR. During the test he chatted a great deal on side things in LotR, and will be a lot of fun to talk with in kinship.
His favorite characters from LotR are Legolas, Gandalf, and Fangorn. Legolas is the loner elf ranger type, and was especially fun during Helm's Deep keeping a gaming tally with Gimli. Gandalf is the crotchety old man with an attitude with a soft side shown towards the hobbits. Fangorn was the treeman who let the assault on Saruman, and was like a wrecking ball once he saw what was being done to his family of trees.

The WoW Anniversary run pictures are now online, enjoy! Eonwe's letter:
Heya Varda,

I have those images from the Anniversary capital run on Lothar up now. I had to create a new stylesheet for it, and boy was that "fun," heh. Out of the screenshots I took, I picked (what I thought were) the best ones to put up. We have at least one of every city.

You can see the images by going to the Games Page, selecting the Guild Branches Menu, and then through either the Lothar or Uldaman submenus, select "Events." It's directly accessed through that right now, but in the future (probably not soon) it will be on an "Events" page.

Take care.

        Ar-PharazonV?, arwen1, austeinm, Eomer-(V) as IWF519, Eonwe Valar, fladrifv, GwaihirValar, Indis-(V) as karakedi25, pallandovalar, TulkasValar61,  VardaValar1
Eiladwyn-(T) tried to join us as eiladwyn but had difficulty and never made it in. Thanks for trying!
WoW Lothar server: fireworks collecting (and gaming together): Goblin Engineer Sauronv is willing to make them but requests help with materials including ore, cloth, and skins. Here's his list.

Sept. 28, 2009
The anniversary chat marathon is on! Eonwe kicked it off by holding the room open from Sunday's meeting. Some that we noticed present today helping out (sorry that I can't catch everyone who helps!):
ArPharazonV, austeinm, Eomer-(V) as IWF519, Eonwe Valar, fladrifv, GwaihirValar, VardaValar1,

WoW Lothar group had an anniversary marathon gaming together today with Elwing, Sauron, Fangorn, and Varda. The job they took on (to my surprise) was working up a priest to help with runs (Varda-Valar's Varda, the Holy Priest) and Fangorn's mage while clearing out stray Borean Tundra quests for others. Leveling, training, and craziness continued for many hours. Elwing commented at one point that we had passed six hours; she had gone to jury duty early that morning and been let off early and had been given the day off at work, blessing us with her presence in WoW. Eonwe came in late in the evening and said hello to everyone.
The WoW Lothar and Uldaman server groups are planning fireworks with a shout-out at the major cities saying "Happy 12th Anniversary to the Valar Guild!" in major cities on October 4th. Sauron's engineer plans to make some fireworks and others of us can help during the week with materials (send to Sauronv) and buying fireworks from vendors.

LotRO: collecting for mathoms for the October 4th (Sunday) anniversary is underway! We can have a trivia and shout-out on Sunday with prizes of resource stacks, food, drinks, tokens, scrolls, smokes, house decorations, or whatever you think up. If you can't be there Sunday, we have a kinhouse for putting goodies in. If kin chest space does not permit, send them to the overflow bank character Gilmacariel and mark in the LotROmail that they are for the anniversary and any special purpose you might also have such as trivia prize or general to any kin mate.

Welcome to the Valar Guild, Nimrodel-(V)!
Nimrodel came to us from LotRO, introduced by her husband, Gildor-(V). She's read the H, LotR (multiple times), and Sil. Gildor-(V) and Nimrodel-(V) gamed with Indis-(V) and Varda-(Valar) all on lowbies in LotRO. Some of Nimrodel's favorite characters from the LotR are Merry and Pippin for being amusing and gutsy, as they were in the ruins smoking and eating, as well as Eowyn the gutsy slayer of the Witch-king (with Merry's aid), and Aragorn the epitome of gutsy, and Sam the brave, loyal, practical, good guy also gutsy. Do we see a trend here? :)

Eonwe-(Valar), our illustrious co-chair of the overall Valar Guild, has sent emails to the 108 members for which we had an address. If you didn't get one, you know there's a problem. Here's a copy of it. Feel free to contact Eonwe or Varda, use the Forum, or drop in on an AIM meeting. We are asking what games members play so they can get together. We are also finding out who would still like to be associated with the Valar Guild Tolkien Fan Club and Gamers group, even if you can't be active much this year. Maybe next year will be better for you.
Suggestions for the upcoming 12th Anniversary of the Valar Guild now being taken.

    Gaming / LoTRO:
Summer Festival: last day. Be sure to turn in your tokens today.
Turtle soup. 8:30pm EDT Nornuan Turtle run in Filikul instance of the Waterworks, run by Lhee group with Valar filling in the slots. Last Monday we didn't have enough people, especially tanks and healers. This is the first time that has happened and was due to the end of summer schedule changes for many people. Our usual leader, Daegaran, will probably be unable to come tonight. We'll see how it goes tonight and if we need to make changes in day or time for turtle runs. Please sign up for today's turtle run on our forum if you think you might be available on standby. Also, we would like to do other high level runs (perhaps today, especiallyi if the raid doesn't make) and are taking suggestions for times during the week for various types of runs we can schedule, including music rehearsals, books, fellowship, class quests, radiance and other gear runs. Would we prefer weekdays, weeknights, weekends now?
The raid made and DKP was earned. A lack of any captain debuffs on the turtle's damage over time attack seems to have been our downfall. Three attempts occurred with standbys taking the place of those who had to leave after the first run. The first run was with only 11. Tanks did well in all runs at keeping aggro away from squishies. Congratulations to Gildor for his first run versus Nornuan! Lycius led the raid. Participants were:
Alasse (Indis-V's lore-master), Estellion (guardian), Fainan (Varda-Valar's hunter), Galadhalion (champion), Gwennair (Gildor-V's hunter), Jorgin (rune-keeper), Lhee (Amroth-V's lore-master), Lycius (hunter and leader), Naveras (rune-keeper), Passim (Melkor-Valar's rune-keeper), Shadoow (burglar), Valahn (champion), Yula (minstrel)
DKP earned is listed on the Forum under LotRO > Raids and Quests > DKP.
DKP explanation is listed on the Forum under LotRO > Raids and Quests > DKP (Dragon Kill Points) Information

If you haven't received an email by then, please email Eonwe and/or Varda (Varda for confidential emails). Erase the words NOSPAM. This lets members see which other members are playing the same games they are so they can get together, makes sure we have the right email for guild contacts, and counts as a guild contact that shows you as active that carries over to next year, 2010, unless you request to be dropped.
Varda: She and Fangorn are visiting Elwing this Sunday for swimming, leaving Eonwe in charge of today's meeting..
Ar-Pharazon will be restricting his times at the meeting to one hour due to returning to college. We could use another person to help email transcripts to Varda for the later parts of the meetings.

August 21, 2009
    Welcome to Full Membership, Rosie-(V)!
Rose Cotton has been a Member of Honor of Orome since 1998. She joined the kin in LotRO last week and tested today with Varda, for a perfect 5/5 score. She's the grand-daughter of Melkor-(Valar), daughter of Orome-(Valar), and sister of William-(MoH of Orome). She's a fun person to chat with and is leveling quickly. She may be on mostly mornings as her brother often has the computer in the evenings. After school starts Sept 1, she'll probably be on weekly or monthly, but can be on much more right now. She used to play DAoC and still plays WoW sometimes, but is now with us in LotRO. She's read the H, LotR, and Sil. Her favorite LotR character is Tom Bombadil, hands down. He envelopes everything she likes: nature, relaxed living, love, and music.

    Gaming / WoW expansion: Catclysm:
An article in GameLife tells a bit about the upcoming WoW Cataclysm expansion, including geological destruction by the Maelstrom of many known areas. Two new races are being added: Goblins for Horde, Worgen (werewolves) for Alliance. The level cap is going up to 85.

Tolkien. The orchestra will be at Radio City Music Hall Oct 9-10. The manuscripts will be shown for the first time in New York, at Fordham's Library at  Lincoln Center from Oct 5 to Nov 19. The manuscripts come from Marquette University's collection. There will be talks and signing sessions, meetings and panels with special guests including Howard Shore, Doug Adams, Tolkien linguist David Salo, and illustrator Colleen Doran.        DKP have been given on the forum as so far known up to today, trying to be as generous as possible, using information from both the forum and News page. Remember that DKP cannot be used on the Turtle run with the Lhee group, as it is a multi-kin run even when we are over half of it.

    Happy birthday, Elladan-(V)!

August 6, 2009
Welcome to the Valar Guild, Finarfin-(V)!
Finarfin has been with us as an initiate in LotRO since July 27, 2009, picking his name today. He was scouted by his old friend from NeverWinter Nights and from a previous LotRO kinship, appropriately Indis-(V) and tested by Varda. He used to play WoW and Lineage 2. He is from Ohio in the USA, EST. He is 48 and plays just about daily, although he also has to work. He's read the H, LotR, and Sil. His favorite characters are Aragorn, Eomer, Legolas, and Gimli. Aragorn seemed like a villain at first but was actually the king. Eomer seemed like a an evil barbarian but was actually a noble warrior. Gimli and Legolas were great warriors who overcame racial prejudice to become best friends.

    Tolkien Site / Art:
       The art is moving
to Alatar's valarguild.org domain and server, as we are having continuing problems with the previous server. This means your bookmarks are changing and a lot of links are being repaired not only in the art site but illustrations all over the Tolkien Site. Bookmarks may be changed by going through normal navigation to the desired artist and picture, eventually again to the article and associated pictures. Thank you to AuSteinM-(T) for going to all the trouble he's had to bear with on the old server, and thank you to Alatar-(Valar) for the very generous amount of both web space and bandwidth added today on the text site. If you wonder why Varda wasn't gaming today, I was busily serving you elsewhere, but I'm thinking of you! Kill a monster in the name of Elbereth!

July 27, 2009
    Gaming / LotRO:
8:30 pm EST: Nornuan turtle run with the Lhee group.

This doesn't take very long and we can form other smaller groups any time of day, before, during, and after the scheduled raid. These can be pre-scheduled if Monday is a good time, and should be set not to interfere with the main Turtle raid.

We would like to have scheduled all-Valar runs. These don't have to be raids but can be scheduled fellowship quests and book runs. We may also have a version of this for special events, such as concerts with the boss/goal being the completion of the intended music list.
The DKP system may come under consideration for helping with drops, possibly in a bid system using a person's collection of DKP rather than a straight 1000 point roll. (DKP means "Dragon Kill Points). Points would be listed on the Forum. These would only be used in rolls for Valar runs, including our cross-guilded folk. Guild-friends do not get guild DKP. If a guild-friend joins in, he must be pre-warned that he's welcome to hope his good roll beats our DKP-hyped rolls. Failed rolls do not use up DKP. Any pre-shceduled run even with friend groups earn DKP even if we can't use it in a mixed group run . For example, our Monday run with Lhee group would earn DKP for other runs, although it could not be spent in that particular run. Cross-guilded members sush as Lhee/Amroth-(V) would still earn his DKP for guild runs. DKP would be earned by the player, not confined to one character, so you don't lose out if asked to switch to a different character partway through to help with strategy. In all cases, the dkp addition should be declared ahead of the roll. A person is not required to use their dkp.
Any officer in LotRO including Warlords, Maiar, or Valar may set up a scheduled run. This must be listed on the Forum. It would be best to also show it in the kin message of the day (any officer can put up this message) and in the News (email Varda). It is ok to also advertise it in the kinmail.
Points could be earned this way, but *only* for scheduled runs:
10 points for showing up on time, whether the group forms or not.
On time plus self-signed up on the forum adds another point to the 10 points for being on time.
In below-Moria runs: 2 points for participating in a boss attempt, 5 points for participating in a boss kill.
In Moria and above that level runs: 5 points for participating in a boss attempt, increasing to 20 points for participating in a boss kill.
Using the earned points has two possible systems, and we are leaning towards a form of the bid system.
Roll system: /roll 1000 + all dkp points. If that person wins, all dkp points are re-set to zero.
Bid: Bid for the item out of your dkp points without using a roll. Unused dkp remains.
                Hybrid: /roll 1000 + a pre-stated part of the dkp points.

He's read the H, LotR, Sil, and is in the 9th of HoMe, and is now at the age of 16. His favorite LotR character is Gimli.

    Membership:
Welcome to the Valar Guild as a Full Member, Landroval-(V)!
Landroval joined the kin in LotRO as an initiate with his character, Rana, after passing the test June 27, 2009 and deciding to mull over the name. Today he chose right after the Turtle raid. :)  He's been a long-time guild friend running with us from the Lhee group. He's read the H, LotR, and Sil. His favorite character is Legolas, reminding him of himself for his keen eyesight. Another character he enjoys is Gandalf for being awesome.
    Gaming / LotRO:
       Turtle run
by the Lhee group with Valarites welcome. See when the run resets and we will set up a Valar run. For those who can, bring half acid, half radiance gear.
We won in one run! Daegaran, Fainan (Varda), Fundinv (Fundin), Galadhalion (Maedhros), Hanna, Hlifstal, Isawen, Lhee (Amroth), Lycius, Miruin (Forlong), Rana (Landroval), and Valain.
Then we put together a second group afterwards and ran the Turtle again! We were trying not to have to leave anyone out. :)  Friends who came along to help included Boronind's (Halbarad) friend from Aes Sidhe:Yvain. I don't have that list, unfortunately.

The art page server is back online, huzzah and thanks to AuStein-(T)! A lot of links, however, are broken because they are no longer automatically redirected from http://www.valar.game-host.org to http://valar.game-host.org, as that has just changed to a pay service . Varda is currently working on tons of affected links, happily finding some that were already pointed correctly. Meanwhile, please reload a page to clear your cache of the old address or, on links not yet corrected, remove the www from the link in the address bar as a work-around. Thank you for your patience!

June 25, 2009
Welcome to the Valar Guild, Arth-(T)!
He offered his work to the site today and we were honored to accept it. Arth is joining us as a Tolkien-only member with original poetry set to music made by his own vocals and keyboarding.

Telerilindalë: The Lay of the Last by Arth-(T). This link goes to his Blogspot including his own vocals, keyboarding, and lyrics for the first part of his poem about the Teleri Elves.
Letter excerpt from Arth-(T) on June 26, 2009:
I recall finding "Arth" as a Sindarin root meaning "region", so it should do.   I've registered as Arth on the forum.  As soon as I feel comfortable with the style there, I'll post.  Maybe even the following.
Second Life is different that what you describe and I saw in Luthien-T's blog entry. The area I often inhabit is about 20 regions in the main "Agni" server (not the personal only Open Sim), hosted for charity by "Builders of Arda".  The user created content there is quite rich, with many opportunities for chat and free-form based RP in several Tolkien areas and ages, including Valimar, Tanequitil and Menegroth.  We even have a community-made Tirion sim developing nicely along the same lines as Luthien-T's.
There are non-canon Tolkien areas very nearby, as well as staged events, classes, battles, quests and PVP utilizing user-created combat systems. Check it out.  If you log into Second Life, contact Arth Karas or Aule Finesmith.  I'll show you around.

June 23, 2009
    Gaming / LotRO:
The Book 8 expansion is now online. It includes the Book 8 epic quest with the touch of Dol Guldur, a make-over of Bree-land, crafting system crit item change, and stacking to 100 of many things to improve storage.

    Tolkien Site / Art:
AuSteinM-(T) tracked down the problem with the art server, huzzah! We're working on it.

June 21, 2009
    Tolkien Site / Art:
The main art server holding most of our gallery for The Glittering Caves of Aglarond seems to be down, possibly due to their maintenance or our change of main server.     Gaming / WoW / Lothar server:
        Letter from Eonwe, branch master:

As I planned, I have implemented a new rank of Tulca on Lothar. "Tulca" means "Steadfast" (you will notice the similarity to the name of the Vala Tulkas) and is to honor regular members who have shown commitment to our guild branch (with consideration also given to activity within the Valar Guild as a whole). This rank is strictly an honor within the guild branch, but will be no less deserved by those who earn it.
Given that they have, throughout our four years on Lothar, been the most regularly active "regular" members within our guild branch, and stuck it out with us for those four years, I am pleased to announce that Eowyn and Elwing have been thus honored as our first Tulcar.

June 3, 2009

People who don't get to go in future scheduled instance runs can still join together for questing, books, deeding, instances, playing music, or chat.

    LotRO kin contest:
If we're interested in this, we can make a group or two of new characters that run together and can choose whether to include one or more high levels with them, especially during instances. Varda will probably be gone on vacation where there is no computer during most of this time, but could help while present.
"The contest is a leveling race. The kinships that level up the most and the fastest will win! Starting at noon EDT on May 21 and running through noon EDT on June 15, every new character created is tracked in a special database.
"New characters earn points for their kinship by gaining levels, and you can follow your kinship’s progress via a new leaderboard in the Lorebook. Only characters added to a kinship after the contest has begun can earn points. Players will need to create new characters or recruit friends to join their kinship's adventure in Middle-earth in order to earn points – existing characters do not count toward the point totals. Points will only be awarded to the first kinship a character joins during the promotion – choose wisely."
Here are the various ways to win:
The kinship with the most points overall for each game world
The kinship with the most points per member for each game world
The kinship containing the single top character in each server world (based on total points gained by that member and how fast they are achieved in the event of a tie)
The One Kinship to Rule Them All – The Kinship with the most points overall across all servers

Story writing contest. Letter from Alcardilme-(T).
And any of us can make nominations!:
There is a 'contest' out there in cyberspace for Tolkien fanfic writers. I've been blessed to have been nominated for the last couple of yours.
This year - I am a promoter - which means I send out a notice to a group I belong to - I'd like to send out notices about the MEFA's to 'our' group at the Guild - perhaps in the Forum section - What do you think?  You don't have to be a member to see the stories - just login as a guest - no name or password needed.
There are no prizes - but nice banners for winners, nominations, all kinds of stuff.... It's a 'family' type group - slash only is not accepted - but NC-17's are.
Here's their link.... Let me know what you think.

    Blessings,
    Alcardilme

Gaming / WoW / Uldaman Server branch:
Uldaman Server branch is proud to report
that thanks to the efforts of all and the push by our recently made Death Knights, we have opened and begun stocking the guild's bank today.
Uldaman Server is also starting up the implementation of Eonwe's suggestion of a Veteran rank, likely to be renamed.
In Uldaman Server branch ranks, we have Meldo for initiate, Member for Full Members (same as the overall guild honor), Veteran for the core group who've played with us a lot and proven to care about this particular gaming group (overall Full Member with an additional plus in privileges, not a rank in the overall guild but just for Uldaman. This is not the same as the Warlord rank that is just for LotRO event organizers who are not overall guild officers), Maia (the same overall guild officers expert with LotR), and Vala (the same overall guild fanatic officers expert with LotR and Sil).

Welcome to the Valar Guild, Indis-(V)!
Indis found us via a LotRO forum link, emailed, and then fellowshipped with a group of us in the Grand Stairs instance (which we won). She tested 5/5 with Varda. She plays a little NeverWinter Nights, mostly LotRO. She's 66 with a BA and MA in Linguistics and a doctorate in Psychology. Her consulting is anything to do with second-language acquisition, including a data analysis project is for responses on a survey given to students in a full-year study-abroad program. In other words, by day she does consulting, but by night she slaughters evil on LotRO.
Some of her favorite characters are Gandalf for the way he talks: witty and wise; Elrond as lore-master of the Elves; and Galadriel for defying the gender norms of her people.

    Gaming / LotRO:
Saturday and Sunday Melkorrim morning runs
will be returning now that Melkor is back with us after vacation. His family goes on runs together leveling the lowest family member, and take fellow Valarim along in empty slots. Ok, so the group never actually stopped, but now it has that fun Melkor ingredient. He was even along on the most recent Nornuan Turtle run, yay!
LotRO crafters, you're needed. Thanks to all these major runs we've been making more and more frequently, the kin house is in need of more such goodies as food, scrolls, and hope tokens. Yes, we have a room problem, and I'll get to work on that.
And folks, don't be shy about using things that you need out of the kinhouse to help with space problems. Also, keep an eye out as we dump Second Age drops in there every now and then. I've seen three in there at once.

April 22, 2009
    Movie: The Hunt for Gollum
coming out online in May. Trailers up. Link suggested by Eomer-(V).

   Gaming / LotRO:
    Congratulations!
First, a group of Valarites and Lhee's  folk (with whom we frequently run) got together and killed the dragon, Thorog, in Helegrod, for the hope buff item (Durin's axe: Mirdanant) to aid in killing the Watcher in the Vile Maw next Monday.
Warmed up after doing that raid, twelve of us remained and tried out the new Turtle run in the Waterworks of Moria. Led by Daegaran of the Kindred of the Blade kinship, we killed the turtle the first try, thanks to planning, excellent teamwork, and probably group makeup. First we ate and read scrolls. In a tight bunch, we ran together out to the island directly in front of the gate. The water does acid damage. The ranged folk and healers remained on the island while the tanks went into the water on the other side of the turtle and spun him away from the squishies. Then the tanks took turns holding aggro, giving the previous tank time to heal up and remove wounds (wound, morale, and power potions help). As the turtle was nearly down, some of us died, some of those were brought back up, and enough of us remained to complete the kill. We earned a First Age Warden's javelin amongst many other good things all turtle-themed, including a Jeweler's recipe for the bracelet, Guardian 2nd Age, several purples, and a bound experience rune.
Some of the people present for both the dragon and the turtle were Amroth-(V) on lore-master Lhee, Beleg-(V) on captain Belleg, Caranthir-(V) on champion Azagrul, Eomer-(V) on captain Erkendan, Halbarad-(V) on lore-master Boronind, Lothiriel-(V) on captain Roheisia, Varda-(Valar) on hunter Fainan; captain Daegaran, guardian Hlifstahl, minstrel Isawen, hunter Lycius, and minstrel Yula.
    So we had a make-up of 1 champion, 4 captains, 1 guardian, 2 hunters, 2 lore-masters, 2 minstrels.
Reminders of people and items to help fill in this report may be passed on to Varda for inclusion. Thanks Beleg. :)

Welcome to the Valar Guild, Imrahil-(V)!
Imrahil joined us in LotRO on his Beliandra character. A fellowship including Beleg, Orome, Lothiriel, and others noticed his request in public chat for a casual Tolkien lore guild, and we enjoyed his sense of humor and considerable knowledge of the books. He had played WoW and LotRO a year ago but had to be away, coming back to find both of his old guilds gone. His favorite character from the Hobbit is Beorn, and from LotRO he favors Sam and Fatty Bolger. Fatty was very brave pretending to be Frodo as a decoy.

April 17, 2009
Welcome to the Valar Guild, Gildor-(V)!
Gildor joined us in LotRO on his Gwennair character. Beleg scouted and Varda tested. He came in as an initiate April 4, 2009 while trying to come up with a primary name, and has one today. We all know how tough that choice can be! He's 52 from the USA, in EDT. He used to play WoW and EQ. He enjoys playing strategy games including Total War: Civilization. He and his wife sometimes play Guild Wars. Times he can play (usually LotRO) are daily after work and on weekends probably in the evenings.
Gildor has read the H, LotR, and Sil, but since it's been a while he is rereading again starting with the Hobbit, and says he intends to read them more closely this time. His favorite character is Aragorn because of the mystery around him when we first meet him.

LotRO: the majority of guild activity was here in groups, individual activity, and crafting.
Tolkien:
Bilbo and Frodo's birthday, special observed day in Middle-earth.
After the War of the Ring:
RotK App. D "The Calendars" p.1085: In the Reunited Kingdom by the New Reckoning that was a return to the King's Reckoning, Yavannie 30, corresponding to the former September 22, was made a festival in honor of Frodo's birthday. The leap year was provided for by doubling this feast, called Cormare or Ringday. (Only the Shire continued with Shire Reckoning, a form of the King's Reckoning adapted to their own customs, retained even when the Stewards changed the calendar p.1082.)
The Reunited Kingdom, except for the Shire, commemorated the new year, previously March 25, for the fall of Sauron and the deeds of the Ringbearers.
The Shire, after the War of the Ring, did not commemorate September 22 nor March 25. The hobbits of the Westfarthing, especially in the country around Hobbiton Hill, did celebrate April 6 with a holiday including dancing in the Party Field, when weather permitted. Some said it was old Sam Gardner's birthday, some that it was the day the Golden Tree first flowered in 1420, and some said it was the Elves' New Year.
In the Buckland the Horn of the Mark was blown at sundown every November 2, followed by bonfires and feastings, in honor of the first blowing of that horn in the Shire in 3019.
The suggestion was made by Varda and seconded by Arien that we need a section on Middle-earth holidays in our Tolkien Site, for the usual scholarly reasons and to aid in event planning in our games. Send in your information from Tolkien's books on any holiday to be added to this project. A start on this project includes the information from today's chat for "Festivals after the War of the Ring" by Varda-(Valar), written after the meeting..

Welcome to the Valar Guild, Thorin-(V)!
Thorin joined us in LotRO as Geldrig. He often uses Gilgamesh and recently Galish on other forums. Maedhros-V gets scouting credit, as Thorin is his online friend and Suburban Jungle reader. Thorin is 45 and married, living in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, putting him in EDT. He's played on a C64 (ahh, memories). Games he's played are Gemstone 3, Ultima Online, AO, Eve Online, and some others, but now he plays LotRO only (was in the beta) He works weekends from 10 am-7pm.
He's read H, LotR, Sil, and Children of Hurin. His favorite character is Gimli, who started his interest in dwarves with his gruff personality. The interest carried through to playing the Ice Crown Middle-earth rp tabletop game as a dwarf. For LotRO, he suggests that dwarves should have more beard skills, more quaffing (hehe), and more dwarf-only skills such as starting with special axe attacks that swing fast, choppy, and low.

Alatar-(Valar) has set us up with a new server for the Valar Guild website - stronger, better, able to do the latest php at a single bound! The transition to the new server should be after the end of March. Feel free to give the super server a big welcome by sending in a new piece of your Middle-earth art or writing for any section: articles, poetry, humor, stories, languages, music, or other. The domain name will point to the new server. Email Varda about broken links or let her know at an AIM meeting. This is a great gift. Thank you, Alatar!

This was too big not to share. It affects anyone who plays Blizzard games to some extent, but particularly WoW players and those who will be playing Starcraft 2 and D3.
Long story short, Blizzard is creating a unified account for all Blizzard games. I'll let the link speak for the details. http://us.battle.net/faq/index.html

March 15, 2009
Welcome to the Valar Guild, Lothiriel-(V)!
She responded in LotRO to a recruitment message from Varda, with whom she had already gamed before, and took the test. She's 40, from Michigan, USA; EST. She mainly plays LotRO, although she has unused accounts in WoW and Warhammer. She's read H, LotR, and parts of the Sil. Two of her favorite LotR characters are Eowyn and Faramir, and was disappointed that their romance wasn't shown more in the movies.

Welcome to the Valar Guild, Forlong-(V)!
Forlong was scouted by Lothiriel-(V), tested by Varda. He's 45 with a birthday soon, from Massachusetts, USA; EST. When not on his hectic work schedule, he likes to play LotRO and AoC. He previously played Eve, EQ1, and UO. His favorite character is Eowyn, caught in a struggle between being the Teutonic shieldmaiden and the king's niece.

Welcome to the Valar Guild, Eomer-(V)! Eomer was scouted by Lothiriel-(V), tested by Varda. He's 25, soon to be 26, from New York, USA; EST. He can play about four days a week. LotRO is his only MMO, although he enjoys fighting and first person shooter games. He's read the H, LotR, Sil, Unfinished Tales, Lost Road, and Shaping of Middle-earth. Some of his favorite characters are Eomer, Eowyn, Theoden, Faramir; Merry, Pippin; Gandalf, Aragorn, Boromir, and Gimli; Haldir and Glorfindel. Eomer saw through the treason of Isengard. He stood for what he believed and did not waver.

The previous Eomer-(V) has been dropped for inactivity. He is welcome to return, but will need a new primary name.

       Letter from Eonwe:
Just thought I'd let you know my background work is finally starting to come to fruition. I've updated the way my Gaming news is handled, as well as switching to a gregorian year as opposed to going from GPMU to GPMU (which concludes right before each Anniversary, so perhaps the term "Valian year" is appropriate to describe this measure of time from GPMU to GPMU :}). This means I'm less likely to shun adding news to the Games Page for fear of major Games Page changes :}

The next set of changes will include some improvements to the menu, as well as some organizational changes on the back end that should facilitate easier code changes/additions by me.

Updates to player tables will be coming soon after that, even though I haven't transferred them to the new format yet. That'll have to come afterwards with the next set of updates.

Ulmo would like to outfit his second character, Vailimo, with the radiant set and is available for any of those instance runs.

March 9, 2009
Welcome to the Valar Guild, Halbarad-(V)!
Halbarad found us in the LotRO forums, looking for a group that was not purely hack and slash. As the hobbit Willmot, he looked up Fainan (Varda) in LotRO, and tested 5/5. [Note to our webworkers: When looking for us, he found the Games site rather than the main website. He also mentioned that our highest levels listed are 50 rather than 60, and hasn't been updated in a long time.] He plays LotRO and dislikes WoW (sorry, WoW gang). He gamed that night as Boronind (60 LM) with Fainan in the Sixteenth Hall. Halbarad generally games around 7-11pm EST. He's from San Antonio, Texas, USA in CST. Some names he considered that were already taken were Finrod and Thingol. A day after the test he chose the name Halbarad. To him, one of the most interesting characters in LotR is Saruman. He enjoyed reading about how the mighty (in this case Head of the White Council) fell from grace and the path of wisdom, as a tragedy, and received deserved justice.

Beleg and Maedhros tried to participate from LotRO in this new Tolkien game. Next time we play such a game in the meeting, those wanting to play from a game could be included in the alphabetical list of players. This time was our first try and we had a lot of crashing, including of Eonwe who made up the game and needed to referee. Now that we have an idea of what we're doing, it should go faster, especially if we can keep from going afk or crashing. :)

    Letter from Ulmo in LotRO:
To all my Valar Friends,

This is something I have been hoping and trying to work around for a long time.  I have been trying to raid informally with friends I have met in game, but it just isn't working out.  Guilds raid regularly, friend's groups do ocassionaly at best.  Some of the people I have played a lot with over the last several months have formed a raiding guild and have been trying to recruit me  for weeks, even before my comp troubles.  Anyway, it boils down to me removing Niequi from Valar to join them.  I am not leaving Valar.  All of my alts are staying.  But it is time for me to commit to a raiding kinship so that I can enjoy the high end part of the game.  I hope all will understand.

Sincerely, Ulmo

A correction on a news item from the meeting synopsis: I will still be coming to meetings.

    Eonwë
Welcome to the Valar Guild, Brand-(V)! Brand recently came over to LotRO playing the lore-master character of Culainn, dropping previous MMO's. He has played Diablo 1, Diablo 2, Asheron's Call 1, Dark Age of Camelot, Eve Online, World of Warcraft, and Dungeons & Dragons Online. He's 39, from Brooklyn, New York, USA, in the EST. He dislikes using any sort of instant messenger. He can play several times a week. Next week he's on vacation and will not be at his computer, but after that he expects to be on most weeknights for a few hours, but rarely on weekends. He enjoys role-play, but likes our freedom of also being able to talk about game mechanics. He's read the H, LotR about 7 or 8 times, and the Sil. He listed a lot of characters that he likes, but finds Tom Bombadil especially interesting for his being an enigma. Bombadil is clearly very powerful, but mysterious. He is serious but merry. He is devoted to what matters to him personally, but able to distance himself from the troubles of the world at large. What is he? Whey keep to himself? Where does his food come from? Other characters mentioned as interesting were Aragorn, Frodo, Bilbo, Eowyn, and Saruman (he's interesting although unlikable).

March 2, 2009
Welcome to the Valar Guild, Pippin-(V)!
Pippin recently picked up the LotRO game and joined us there with the hobbit character of Shamat. He came highly recommended by his rl friend of 20 years, Maedhros-(V). Varda tested and comments that Pippin is an excellent speller and pleasantly sociable; he should be a fine addition to the group. He's 40 years young and lives in Virginia, USA. He's read the H and LotR. Two of his favorite LotRO characters are Merry and Pippin.
The previous Peregrin-(V) has been dropped for non-contact, freeing his name for the new member, but is welcome back under a new name.

    LotRO podcast. Letter from Moormur:
Hello, everyone!

My name is Moormur and I play on the Silverlode server of Lord of the
Rings Online. I have recently begun a podcast (I believe it is the
first LOTRO Podcast ever) to cover all things LOTRO related. You can
find it at LOTROCast.blogspot.com. As a regular segment of my show, I
have a rundown of the different servers. I have visited many of your
kinship's websites to try and find events to include in the broadcast
but I realized it would be much less effort to have kinships let me
know what's going on in their servers than me spend hours trolling the
Internet for a few nuggets to include.

If your kinship, server, group, friends, WHATEVER is putting on an
event, I highly encourage you contact me at this email address so I
can include it in subsequent episodes of LOTROCast.

And stay tuned to LOTROCast for the latest news, information, and
commentary about the game we all know and love. If you have someone in
you kin who would like to contribute, encourage them to contact me and
we can work it out!

Thank you so much!

Moormur

LotRO Gaming Poetry (should this be a new category?)  :)
       "The Ballad of Lalia".
See the priceless poetry of Maedhros commenting on Lalia, the hobbit child we try to rescue from the Barrow-downs. It was posted on our Forum under LotRO General. And for today, here:
o/`
Lalia, oh Lalia
what the heck is wrong with you?
You lost your cloak
You lost your mind
And to rescue you is a waste of time
Oh Lalia
I'm leaving you to the wights

Lalia, oh Lalia
why do you do the things you do?
You go off chasing
some dead prince
Your gullibility makes me wince
Oh Lalia
Stop cowering, help me fight

Lalia, oh Lalia
what the heck is wrong with you?
I rescued you
and your dad paid
but you're back in the Barrows the very next day
Oh Lalia
I'm leaving you to the wights...
o/`

    Tolkien Site / Art:
The Cave of The Bohemian Weasel

New pictures! Many are not even up on her own site yet! More are coming, but your webmaster tuckered out for the night. Enjoy the pictures under these character sections:
Aragorn: Aragorn as Strider. Aragorn at Bree. Leading the Hobbits into the wild. Aragorn and Legolas fleeing the Paths of the Dead.
Faramir: Faramir in plate armor (magnificent oil painting, added to the Valar Guild index page). Faramir in Ithilien in Autumn. Spying Gollum.
Frodo: Frodo feels the influence of the Ring. Sam and Frodo upon the slopes of Mt. Doom.
Galadriel: 2nd Age and detail. Celeborn and Galadriel
Hobbits: Aragorn leading the Hobbits "into the wild". Sam and Frodo upon the slopes of Mt. Doom.
Legolas: Seeing the Crebain from Dunland. Aragorn and Legolas fleeing the Paths of the Dead. Inspecting arrow fletching.
Merry: new section. Merry lost in Fangorn Forest.
Sam: Sam and Frodo upon the slopes of Mt. Doom. Sam vs Shelob
Sauron new section: Annatar in the 2nd Age and detail.

    Gaming / WoW Uldaman:
For the regular Wednesday night Horde get-together, Elwing's blood elf, Fangorn's orc, Sauron's tauren, and Varda's troll ran their little characters within the level 20's as a party in the Shadowfang Keep instance, wiping out every boss, quest, and completing Elwing's Paladin quest. And we still had time for dancing, joking, and flirting (mostly using the emotes).

The Cave of The Bohemian Weasel
is now open in our Tolkien art section.  Although it has a link back to her page, this collection is for her Middle-earth work only, divided into Characters and Places. Enjoy!

AWARDS: For the year 2008, here are a few of those who have contributed highly to a large number of people:
    Transcripter Extraordinaire!
Ar-Pharazon-(V) has done the job of transcript sender for all of 2008 with great responsibility and no prompting just to help. Praise him with great praise!
    Programmer Deluxe!
Eonwe-(Valar) has done the most difficult programming work for the guild this year against considerable odds, on the Games page. He also did the hard work of emailing everyone to request updated information.
    Server Kings!
Alatar-(Valar) continues to reliably supply our pages with the domain name and with the server space for the majority of our pages, taking on all expense himself and keeping us ad-free.
AuSteinM-(TV) continues to reliably supply space for our graphics that are used throughout the site, taking on all expense himself and keeping us ad-free.
    Musician Magnifico!
Glorfindel-(V) started the guild into a whole new area for the Tolkien Site by sending his own original Tolkien-inspired music.
    LotRO High Warlord!
Ancalagon-(V) has organized the largest number of actual runs. He scheduled and led them well, knowing the areas ahead of time. He considered all members from low levels needing book runs to the high levels before the Moria expansion.
    Special thanks:
WoW Uldaman server: Elwing-(V) has kept the Horde presence alive almost single-handedly, with only a little help from Eonwe and Varda.
WoW Lothar server: Eonwe-(Valar) for making and passing around the free Glyphs and for keeping up the Guild Bank, including keeping all those pages organized.
WoW Argent Dawn server: Arien-(Valar) for effort put into the Argent Dawn branch, which would not have existed without her. (Added by Ar-Pharazon-V)
Meetings: Eonwe-(Valar) and Arien-(Valar) have stepped in and run meetings when Varda could not be there.
All those who regularly come to meetings! (Added by Eonwe-Valar)
Tolkien Site: Arveleg-(V) rebuilt the Book List and Review section of the Tolkien Site and pays for the server space. He is handling the massive Timeline project with little help except our checks and links afterwards.

Membership + Web:
Question for the guild: do we want to change the -(TV) honor extension to -(T)? TV was for Tolkien-only Valar Guild Member; T would be for Tolkien or Tolkien-only. Both mean Tolkien-only. The honor level would not change, just the name extension.
        Answer was "Yes".
Helm-(V) moved four weeks ago and has been without internet. He expects it tomorrow, so watch for him in WoW Europe!
Dropping members we can't contact. They can rejoin later, but primary names are not reserved. February cut-off intended.
Changing -(TV) honor designation to -(T)
Pallando-(Valar) has liberty on weekends. SC keys lost at the moment, but it's a game he can play. Plays WoS a little.
