Eonwe Valar: Google Books - free books online and downloadable as pdf. Listed on our site under News > Links > Writing > Book Sources.
ArPharazonV: oh, member, college starting tomorrow, so early night tonight, won't be staying for longer than an hour or so
Eonwe Valar: I think we'll be done long before that at this rate :}
Eonwe Valar: The GPMU is starting this week. Mails will be sent out by next Sunday's meeting.

Eonwe Valar: Gaming:
Eonwe Valar: WoW - Lothar
Eonwe Valar: I forgot to mention last week I put a post up on the forum about the basics of the Argent Tourney and jousting.
Eonwe Valar: It's called "The Argent Tournament: Jousting and You" and is in the general board for World of Warcraft.
Eonwe Valar: (On our Forum)
Eonwe Valar: If you haven't tried the Argent Tourney yet, or are just starting, you might find it useful.
ArPharazonV: read it, but I suppose everyone has their own way of dealing with jousting duels :-)
ArPharazonV: though your way should work fine too
Eonwe Valar: Hehe, aye, I expect most who've done a bit of jousting have their own style by now :}
Eonwe Valar: My way does work :} For me at least :}
ArPharazonV: hehe
arwenv1 has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: As I said, it's mostly for those who haven't tried it or are just getting started. I'm sure as people get more used to it, they'll adapt it to their own preferences.
ArPharazonV: true
Eonwe Valar: In other Lothar news, we now have a fifth bank tab. I had an extra 1600 gold sitting around, so I figured why not :}
ArPharazonV: fifth bank tab..
ArPharazonV: isn't that 2500?
Eonwe Valar: Yep, but we had 900 sitting in the bank already.
ArPharazonV: ah, nice
Eonwe Valar: Next one will be 5k, so it'll probably be a while before I have an extra 3-4k sitting around, hehe :}
AriehnV has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: I recently spent 8500g on buying the last 3 tabs for my small guild
AriehnV: Boohaiya?
ArPharazonV: just because I got a bit tired of sending mail to alts over and over again :-)
arwenv1: lol
Eonwe Valar: Also, Kalmo, my Druid/Enchanter/Engineer is lvl 59, and so he filled the bank with enchants in the process of skilling up :}
arwenv1: for me, I have two bank guilds amongst my characters
ArPharazonV: raised my alts up to "second in command" and now only I and my alts can use those tabs ;-)
arwenv1: so I dont have to buy 5th and 6th slots
arwenv1: <-- packrat
Eonwe Valar: hehe
AriehnV: aiya all :-)
Eonwe Valar: Uldaman:
arwenv1: for instance, I have all the silver and copper coins from fishing up the coin achievement in a bank =o
Eonwe Valar: Looks like it's still steadily busy there :}
Eonwe Valar: I've still got a couple of those to get :}
ArPharazonV: Heh. I started gathering most of those and sending them through alts, but in the end I decided on vendoring the coins I came across and using the gold coins of course
ArPharazonV: I saved my last (gold) coin though, in the bank
Eonwe Valar: Heya Arien :}
ArPharazonV: just for nostalgia
ArPharazonV: silly Uther's coin
Eonwe Valar: LotRO:
Eonwe Valar: Another successful Turtle run it looks like.
Eonwe Valar: Arien has a bit for LotRO. Go ahead Arien.
AriehnV: Varda has been helping my Burgler Arienwyn (i think lol) last monday with quests in the lone lands
AriehnV: and someone else i forgot the name as usual ^^
AriehnV: and on Thursday my Moria expansion finally arrived and i ve got it installed and levelled a Warden Arieniel and my runekeeper Cwenarien to levels 10 and respectively 12
ArPharazonV: oh, grats
Eonwe Valar: Congrats :}
AriehnV: Varda invited them into the guild as well :-) the names are the other way round :-)
AriehnV: and the tailoring is apprentice proficient
ArPharazonV: losing track of your alts' names, eh? ;-)
AriehnV: lol i ve writtien therm down with the classes and profs lol
AriehnV: so i know who can make what and where to send armor and recipes just didnt check
Eonwe Valar: :}
AriehnV: both classes great fun love the runekeeper , shaman type
AriehnV: thats it from me :-)
Eonwe Valar: Thanks Arien :}
Eonwe Valar: That should bring us to... Anyone play anything besides WoW and LotRO?
ArPharazonV: a bit of Battle for Middle Earth myself
ArPharazonV: cleaning out Osgiliath of rangers, currently
ArPharazonV: already took out most of Rohan and part of Ithilien, but the mandatory levels don't seem to keep with the optional levels much, so my armies will be standing in front of Minas Tirith in the last level for some time before I finish all the other optionals
Eonwe Valar: Hehe
ArPharazonV: and I did play some WoW myself! gotten up to 86 mounts and finally got around to finishing the Scepter of Ahn'Qiraj after soloing Maws
ArPharazonV: and got both Greedy and Needy achievements this week ;-)
Eonwe Valar: hehe, congrats.
Menelvagor Valar has entered the room.
Menelvagor Valar: Aiya
Eonwe Valar: Heya Menel :}
AriehnV: aiya Menel
ArPharazonV: and I calculated that if I do all tournament dailies and the heroic tournament 5-man instance every day, I should be able to reach at least 99 mounts by the end of September or so
Eonwe Valar: Good luck :}
Eonwe Valar: I'm just taking mine one mount at a time :}
ArPharazonV: thanks :-)
Eonwe Valar: My current goal is the Silver Covenant Hippogryph, which I'll have by Friday :}
ArPharazonV: oh, and I played some more Patchworkz, the jigsaw-ish game I mentioned last week
Eonwe Valar: Then I'll start working through the ground mounts.
ArPharazonV: description said 80 levels, but I think I'm at level 82 or something... after reading through the comments they said it will start repeating after 107
Eonwe Valar: hehe
ArPharazonV: ah, yes, well, I got my fourth pvp mount, need some gold-buyable mounts and 9 more tournament mounts
ArPharazonV: so doing well
ArPharazonV: and one more pvp mount of course
AriehnV: nice one :-)
ArPharazonV: I always leave the horse-mounts for last, not really a fan of them
AriehnV: i finally got exalted with the Ebon Blade on my pali
ArPharazonV: there's a few nice ones (I think I have one with orange glowing eyes somewhere) but in all they don't seem very special
ArPharazonV: grats!
AriehnV: :-)
Eonwe Valar: Congrats :}
Eonwe Valar: OK, on to Tolkien? :}
top

Eonwe Valar: Tolkien:
Eonwe Valar: Menel, are you at your keyboard?
AriehnV: he is i think but i distracted him for a mo
Eonwe Valar: ok
Eonwe Valar: I can ask him later.
Eonwe Valar: Shall we discuss anything about the RP, or doing something else for Tolkien?
Menelvagor Valar: i'm here.
AriehnV: Varda is missing and Luthien as well
Eonwe Valar: I just wanted to ask about your post in the Sil trivia thread... was one of those supposed to be a guess? :}
ArPharazonV: you mean Indis :-)
Eonwe Valar: What Phar said :}
AriehnV: err aye ^^
Eonwe Valar: If anyone's up for it, we can give the Tolkien word association game another go today :} Just a few rounds for fun :}
Menelvagor Valar: the second one was my guess.
Eonwe Valar: OK.
ArPharazonV: sounds intriguing, but how did that work again?
Eonwe Valar: Someone picks a name from Tolkien (person, place, or thing), next person picks one that is connected. And, since it seems it's popular, anyone can challenge anyone to show the connection they just made.
ArPharazonV: oh, right
Menelvagor Valar: aha :-)
Menelvagor Valar: fun :-)
Eonwe Valar: I'll kick it off, then we'll take the list in order, and skip me the first round.
Eonwe Valar: Who all do we have here at their keyboard?
Eonwe Valar: And willing to play?
Eonwe Valar: Say Aye.
Menelvagor Valar: c'est moi.
ArPharazonV: aye
arwenv1: That doesn't sound like a game I'd be very good at.
AriehnV: aye
Menelvagor Valar: in other words, aye.
Menelvagor Valar: it's as easy or as hard as we make it :-)
Eonwe Valar: Would it help if we limited it to only Lord of the Rings? You can always watch for fun anyway if you'd like :}
Eonwe Valar: Or you might find you recognize more names that you think :}
Eonwe Valar: Hmm, does anyone have Luthien on their list? I don't seem to see her on mine, and she might find this game fun.
arwenv1: I suppose I could play
Eonwe Valar: Only if you're interested Arwen. I don't want to make you do it if you don't want to :}
Menelvagor Valar: doesn't seem to be on mine.
ArPharazonV: not online on my list
Eonwe Valar: To the Member page I go, hehe.
ArPharazonV: oh, she is
Eonwe Valar: Ah, ok.
luthienathariel has entered the room.
Menelvagor Valar: Aiya :-)
Eonwe Valar: Heya Luthien :}
ArPharazonV: Aiya
AriehnV: Aiya there :-)
Menelvagor Valar: Just did the membership page thing :-)
Eonwe Valar: Rather than a topic tonight, we're going to do a Tolkien word association game :} I think you may have been here last time we gave this a go :}
luthienathariel: SUilad
Eonwe Valar: Interested, Luthien?
luthienathariel: sure
luthienathariel: I'll try
Eonwe Valar: Here's an example from the last time we played, to get everyone in the right frame of mind:
Eonwe Valar: Anduril was the first named, the next person named Aragorn since Anduril belongs to Aragorn, and the third person named Roheryn, which was Aragorn's horse.
Eonwe Valar: Let's try not to rename anyone, even under another name :}
Eonwe Valar: We'll stick to Lord of the Rings, so everyone here can see the connections and have a shot.
Menelvagor Valar: Okidoke :-)
Eonwe Valar: Round one starts with me to kick off, then proceeds through the name list on the right of the channel.
luthienathariel: is that the same for all?
Menelvagor Valar: that puts me in last!
luthienathariel: that name list?
Menelvagor Valar: Yes, it's alphabetically.
luthienathariel: ah
Eonwe Valar: Looks like order will be (beyond Round 1): Arien, Phar, Arwen, Eonwë, Luthien, Menel.
Eonwe Valar: Fladrif seems to be afk.
Eonwe Valar: Everyone ready? :}
Menelvagor Valar: radish!
Eonwe Valar: Gloin
Eonwe Valar: Arien's turn :}
luthienathariel has left the room.
Menelvagor Valar: I know at least 2 dozen names connected to that one :-)
AriehnV: Gimli
Eonwe Valar: Yikes, we lost Luthien.
ArPharazonV: including at least 14 dwarves? ;-)
ArPharazonV: hmm, I'll say Legolas
arwenv1: Mirkwood
luthienathariel has entered the room.
luthienathariel: sorry, had a hiccup
AriehnV: aiyata :-)
Eonwe Valar: NP. your turn :}
Eonwe Valar: Arwen said Mirkwood.
luthienathariel: (feverishly thinking)
luthienathariel: Beorn?
Eonwe Valar: Challenge :}
Menelvagor Valar: edge of mirkwood.... don't think a challenge is needed.
Eonwe Valar: I want to hear the connection :}
luthienathariel: oh should it be geographically linked?
Menelvagor Valar: I just gave you the connection :P
luthienathariel: oh wait, I think I may not completely have understood the rules ...
Eonwe Valar: It should be reasonably linked to the previous name.
ArPharazonV: nah, there just has to be a link of any kind
Eonwe Valar: Well, it needs to be a bit stronger than "any kind" otherwise they're all linked by being mentioned in LotR :}
luthienathariel: ok, well tbh - it's been a while since I read the Hobbit ..
AriehnV: Eonwe wanted it to be restricted on Lord of the Rings but i think we should include the Hobbit :-)
luthienathariel: ok, want me to change it then?
Menelvagor Valar: btw, is a connection allowed through other books? as long as the name is from LotR?
Eonwe Valar: Let's keep connections strictly through LotR too.
Menelvagor Valar: okies.
Eonwe Valar: Beorn is briefly mentioned in LotR though.
luthienathariel: hm
Eonwe Valar: The Battle of Five Armies was briefly mentioned in LotR too, as I recall... :}
Menelvagor Valar: Well, I suppose that if one cannot explain the connection after a challenge, one might be able to change what they said, right?
Menelvagor Valar: In the appendices if I remember correctly, aye.
luthienathariel: is there a challenge then?
Menelvagor Valar: Eonwe challenged, aye.
Eonwe Valar: I challenged it. I wanted to see your connection between Mirkwood and Beorn :}
luthienathariel: ah
luthienathariel: as far as I know he just lived close by ..
Eonwe Valar: I probably should've said "Challenge Luthien" to be clearer.
luthienathariel: no, I thought it was still being debated
Menelvagor Valar: well, the Anduin is still between Mirkwood and Beorn's abode, rather invalidating closeness I think.
luthienathariel: ok
Eonwe Valar: I did give hints to connections that could be made to help keep it moving, since we've only done this a couple of times really.
luthienathariel: fair enough :-)
ArPharazonV: ehrm, Beorn's abode is at the east side of the Anduin
ArPharazonV: putting it between the Anduin and Mirkwood
Menelvagor Valar: well, my memory is murky at best ^^
Eonwe Valar: Hehe, "Both are East of the Misty Mountains" would be a vague connection, but I suppose that one would work.
arwenv1: .. your memory is.. mirky?
Menelvagor Valar: One could say that Beorn is connected to Mirkwood via Radaghast and Rhosgobel?
Menelvagor Valar: murky. as in clouded. been a long while since I read LotR :P
Eonwe Valar: Well Menel, time for you to pick a connection from Beorn to something else :}
ArPharazonV: like the murloc from WoW! Murky!
Eonwe Valar: hehe
arwenv1: mirky... as in it has to do with mirkwood..
Menelvagor Valar: Radaghast then :-D
Eonwe Valar: hehe
Menelvagor Valar: Though the connection is in the Hobbit, not in the LotR.
Eonwe Valar: Arien, your go :}
ArPharazonV: I challenge that!
Eonwe Valar: Ok, nevermind, Phar challenges :}
Eonwe Valar: Gives Arien time to plot her move :}
Menelvagor Valar: Well, unless, again, my memory abandons me, in the Hobbit, it is briefly explained that Beorn has a connection with Radaghast.
Menelvagor Valar: but I have this inkling that my memory is kinda failing me :-)
ArPharazonV: I believe the Hobbit mentions they *know* each other, I suppose that counts as a link....
AriehnV: to radagast?
ArPharazonV: came to visit him from time to time if memory serves
Menelvagor Valar: I'm not entirely sure whether Radaghast is mentioned until the Council of Elrond in the LotR though.
Menelvagor Valar: But Beorn is briefly mentioned there as well, so it may be that the connection is there.
ArPharazonV: Gandalf names Radagast his cousin as he talks to Beorn in The Hobbit
AriehnV: The White Council
ArPharazonV: and then Beorn says something along the lines of "Yeah, I've heard of him, he came to visit a few times, nice guy"
ArPharazonV: hmm, my turn?
Eonwe Valar: No, it's Arien's turn.
Eonwe Valar: Unless that was Arien's go.
AriehnV: i said the White Council]
Eonwe Valar: ok, yes, Phar's turn :}
ArPharazonV: hmm, then I'll go with Saruman
Eonwe Valar: Arwen's turn :}
arwenv1: Isengard
Eonwe Valar: Minas Tirith.
Menelvagor Valar: Eonwe :-)
Menelvagor Valar: Luthien even :-)
luthienathariel: Minas Anor
Eonwe Valar: Same city :}
Menelvagor Valar: The Witch King.
Menelvagor Valar: whoops :P
Eonwe Valar: Try again, Luthien :}
Menelvagor Valar: go for the other one :P
Eonwe Valar: Hehe, aye.
Menelvagor Valar: I'll change mine regardless though :-D
luthienathariel: eh wait - isnt that good then?
Eonwe Valar: We're trying not to name the same thing in the list, even under another name.
luthienathariel: I thought it was the one across - which was later renamed Minas Morgul
ArPharazonV: that's Minas Ithil
Menelvagor Valar: That's Minas Ithil :-D
Eonwe Valar: No, Minas Anor became Minas Tirith.
Eonwe Valar: And what Pahr and Menel said :}
luthienathariel: ahh
luthienathariel: ok
Eonwe Valar: *Phar
ArPharazonV: Anor of the sun, Ithil of the moon... one setting and one rising, not sure which
luthienathariel: well, that is what I meant then, Minas Ithil
Eonwe Valar: ok :}
luthienathariel: sry
Menelvagor Valar: Osgiliath.
ArPharazonV: Witch King would still've worked you know :-)
Menelvagor Valar: I know :-)
Menelvagor Valar: But Osgiliath is more fun :P
ArPharazonV: hehe
Menelvagor Valar: and still plenty of connections to be made from there :-)
Menelvagor Valar: Just not as many as the Witch King :-)
Eonwe Valar: OK, to sum up the connections so far...
Eonwe Valar: Gloin > Gimli > Legolas > Mirkwood > Beorn > Radagast > White Council > Saruman > Isengard > Minas Tirith > Minas Ithil > Osgiliath
Menelvagor Valar: Arien's turn :-)
Menelvagor Valar: heh, I'd say even Aragorn is connected thereto ^^
ArPharazonV: what, to the Witch King?
Menelvagor Valar: Osgiliath.
Menelvagor Valar: The Witch King is connected to just about everything, except Dain.
Menelvagor Valar: well, not directly anyways :-D
Eonwe Valar: hehe
ArPharazonV: through one of his Nazgul messengers, perhaps :-)
Menelvagor Valar: never mentioned :-)
AriehnV: Osgiliath .. Faramir
Menelvagor Valar: Challenge.
Menelvagor Valar: Just for the sake of hearing your reasoning :-)
Eonwe Valar: :}
Menelvagor Valar: (As in, I know the connection) :-)
arwenv1: Its the one I'd have chosen =P
Eonwe Valar: hehe
AriehnV: Well Faramir was charged from Denethor to retake Osgiliath
AriehnV: err charged by
Menelvagor Valar: Exactly what I was thinking of :-)
Menelvagor Valar: Pharzie's turn :-)
ArPharazonV: hmm
ArPharazonV: I'll go for Henneth Annun if I get the spelling right
Eonwe Valar: Spelling is correct.
luthienathariel: except the ˆ then
luthienathariel: annûn
luthienathariel: annûn* [' nnu n] n. west, sunset Ety/376, S/428, LotR/VI:IV, LotR/E, LB/354, Letters/308 OS *andûne, CE *n dûnê (NDU) ;-)
Eonwe Valar: It's close enough to be recognizable :}
ArPharazonV: well I've never done well with accents
ArPharazonV: so I usually just skip em
ArPharazonV: my name is Ar-Pharazôn, too ;-)
Eonwe Valar: There's one diacritical mark I know well enough to use often.. I know you all know which one that is :}
Menelvagor Valar: Arwen's turn :-)
arwenv1: Frodo.
Menelvagor Valar: Elen síla lúmenn omentielvo?
Menelvagor Valar: or Eonwë?
ArPharazonV: ironically, he spelled the former without any accent today
Eonwe Valar: Eonwë is the one :}
Eonwe Valar: Any others I tend to skip for expediency.
Menelvagor Valar: And it's the aforementioned Eonwë's turn :-)
Eonwe Valar: I'd have to look them up.
Eonwe Valar: And my response is Gollum.
ArPharazonV: also, I should be going
Eonwe Valar: I was just going to say let's do one last round after this one, hehe.
ArPharazonV: but it was fun! and I assume that at least this time I won't be the only one sending a transcript because there'll be at least another round to report :-)
Menelvagor Valar: list so far is:
Menelvagor Valar: Gloin > Gimli > Legolas > Mirkwood > Beorn > Radagast > White Council > Saruman > Isengard > Minas Tirith > Minas Ithil > Osgiliath > Faramir > Henneth Annûn > Gollum >
Eonwe Valar: Aye :}
Eonwe Valar: Take care Phar and sleep well :}
Menelvagor Valar: sleep well :-)
arwenv1: no
arwenv1: you missed Frodo
Eonwe Valar: Gloin > Gimli > Legolas > Mirkwood > Beorn (Challenged) > Radagast (Challenged) > White Council > Saruman > Isengard > Minas Tirith > Minas Ithil > Osgiliath > Faramir (Challenged) > Henneth Annun > Frodo > Gollum
arwenv1: Frodo > Gollum
arwenv1: yes
Menelvagor Valar: that I did :-)
ArPharazonV (5:27:33 PM): saved  [note: time in CDT. Add one hour for Eastern time]
Eonwe Valar (5:27:43 PM): I've been keeping a running tab too :}
Menelvagor Valar (5:27:53 PM): Luthien's turn :-)
Eonwe Valar (5:27:53 PM): I threw in challenges as well for fun :}
Eonwe Valar (5:27:59 PM): Thanks Phar :}
ArPharazonV (5:28:00 PM): anything after this! someone else has to send in
ArPharazonV (5:28:10 PM): I assume that will be Eonwe but anyone's welcome
Eonwe Valar (5:28:20 PM): I pick anyone but me (kidding :})
Menelvagor Valar (5:28:35 PM): I pick messenger boy :P
Menelvagor Valar (5:29:18 PM): takes too long to transmit anything by standard sub-light radio waves or even light speed messages in morse from me :-)
Eonwe Valar (5:29:28 PM): hehe
Eonwe Valar (5:29:36 PM): Anyway, go ahead Luthien :}
luthienathariel (5:29:43 PM): ok
Invitation result for buddy TH0R0NGIL : TH0R0NGIL rejected your request.
luthienathariel (5:29:55 PM): Déagol
ArPharazonV (5:30:07 PM): and transcript sent
Menelvagor Valar (5:30:09 PM): Gladden Fields.
AriehnV (5:30:30 PM): Narsil
Eonwe Valar (5:30:39 PM): Challenge Arien
Menelvagor Valar (5:30:40 PM): Challenge.
luthienathariel (5:31:02 PM): (that almost sounds as "en garde")
Eonwe Valar (5:31:11 PM): Hehe
ArPharazonV (5:31:12 PM): touché! (hey, an accent)
ArPharazonV (5:31:24 PM): Namárië all!
Menelvagor Valar (5:31:34 PM): more accents!
Eonwe Valar (5:31:40 PM): Take care Phar :}
ArPharazonV (5:31:43 PM): Of course. Now I'm on a roll.
Menelvagor Valar (5:31:43 PM): Namarie :-)
luthienathariel (5:31:46 PM): Mørë!
AriehnV (5:31:53 PM): Mara Lome Phara :-)
luthienathariel (5:32:16 PM): Ñåmårïè!
ArPharazonV (5:32:20 PM): *wävês*
Eonwe Valar (5:32:25 PM): This is the final round, by the way, just so everyone knows. Hope you got your good connections out for this one :}
ArPharazonV (5:32:39 PM): oh, was it my turn?
Eonwe Valar (5:32:45 PM): No, Arien was challenged.
AriehnV (5:32:47 PM): nah mine i was challenged
ArPharazonV (5:32:55 PM): meh, then you won't get one from me, g'night
Menelvagor Valar (5:32:57 PM): twice :-)
Eonwe Valar (5:32:58 PM): By both me and Menel, hehe :}
ArPharazonV (5:33:20 PM): you know what, if it works, I'll throw an Elendil in the mix, but that's after the challenge
ArPharazonV (5:33:29 PM): and I'll see the results when the second part of the transcript goes online
Menelvagor Valar (5:33:32 PM): I know of a faint connection, but that is connected through another one.
Eonwe Valar (5:33:32 PM): OK Phar :}
ArPharazonV (5:33:36 PM): bye!
AriehnV (5:33:42 PM): Gladden fields was the place of Elendil's death ...
ArPharazonV (5:33:55 PM) has left the room.
Menelvagor Valar (5:34:01 PM): Isildur's death.
Menelvagor Valar (5:34:08 PM): Elendil died on Mount Doom.
Menelvagor Valar (5:34:23 PM): Ooooh... I just remembered the connection :-)
AriehnV (5:34:27 PM): merr ok got me there ^^ my fault so i surrender
Menelvagor Valar (5:34:29 PM): Hope Arien gets it though :-)
Eonwe Valar (5:34:58 PM): I assume she meant Isildur and slipped because Phar said Elendil, hehe.
Menelvagor Valar (5:35:23 PM): The shards of Narsil were born by someone (don't remember the name) in Isildur's party and parted way at the disaster of the Gladden Fields, right Eonwe?
AriehnV (5:35:25 PM): Isildur had the shards of Narsil in his bags and he gave it to Ohtar to bring them to Imladris
Menelvagor Valar (5:35:38 PM): Go arien :-)
Eonwe Valar (5:35:48 PM): Sounds right :}
AriehnV (5:36:06 PM): sort of some connection lol
Menelvagor Valar (5:36:08 PM): Arwen's turn :-)
Eonwe Valar (5:36:22 PM): Phar's was Elendil
arwenv1 (5:36:30 PM): um
arwenv1 (5:36:31 PM): Gondor
Eonwe Valar (5:36:54 PM): Hmm, an entire realm.
luthienathariel (5:36:59 PM): Númenor
Eonwe Valar (5:37:08 PM): Still my turn Luthien :}
Menelvagor Valar (5:37:10 PM): Sting.
Menelvagor Valar (5:37:14 PM): whoopsies :-)
luthienathariel (5:37:16 PM): oh
Eonwe Valar (5:37:26 PM): that wasn't my guess, just thinking aloud for a hard one to give you :}
AriehnV (5:37:28 PM): hehe i think our concentration is going to pots
Eonwe Valar (5:37:37 PM): Good thing this is the last round then :}
Menelvagor Valar (5:37:53 PM): I thought Sting was a pretty good one from Numenor though :-D
Eonwe Valar (5:37:58 PM): I'll go with the Wain riders.
Eonwe Valar (5:38:03 PM): And Sting wasn't from Numenor :}
Menelvagor Valar (5:38:21 PM): Oh bugger, it was the other knives :-D
Menelvagor Valar (5:38:36 PM): Sting was Elven-wrought :-D
AriehnV (5:38:51 PM): it came from Beleriand if i remeber right
luthienathariel (5:38:57 PM): what are Wain riders?
Eonwe Valar (5:38:58 PM): I wouldn't thought you'd remember Sting, Menel :} Seeing as it was from Gondolin :}
Menelvagor Valar (5:39:03 PM): I know a connection from the Wain Riders if I may?
AriehnV (5:39:11 PM): Gondolin even
Eonwe Valar (5:39:38 PM): The Wain riders were a federation of peoples from.. the East I believe,.. who attacked Gondor in about the mid Third Age.
Menelvagor Valar (5:39:50 PM): Eonwe, may I take this one and Luhien can take mine? :-)
Eonwe Valar (5:40:16 PM): If and only If it's ok with Luthien :}
luthienathariel (5:40:22 PM): sure
Eonwe Valar (5:40:25 PM): Luthien may have a connection of her own she wants to make :}
AriehnV (5:40:28 PM): the Wain riders were a human people under the thumb of the enemy aye, it was against them that the help of the Edain was needed ?
Eonwe Valar (5:40:28 PM): ok :}
Menelvagor Valar (5:40:37 PM): Eorl.
AriehnV (5:40:41 PM): aye
AriehnV (5:40:47 PM): :-D
Eonwe Valar (5:40:52 PM): Challenge :}
Menelvagor Valar (5:41:41 PM): If I remember correctly, in one of the appendices it is told that Eorl made the trek from his abode from the north of Mirkwood with the Rohirrim to aid the Gondorians against the attacks of the Wain Riders.
Menelvagor Valar (5:42:02 PM): Also, that was the beginning of the alliance and the vows made between Rohan and Gondor.
Eonwe Valar (5:42:41 PM): hmm
Menelvagor Valar (5:42:49 PM): I believe it was in the brown lands, (or whatever the region on the south of Mirkwood is called) where Eorl and the Rohirrim defeated the Wain Riders.
Menelvagor Valar (5:44:02 PM): But if you prefer a clearer connection: Sauron ^^
Eonwe Valar (5:44:04 PM): I believe the Wainriders attacked while there were still kings in Gondor, and Eorl came after the RUling Stewards..
Menelvagor Valar (5:44:42 PM): I think the Wain Riders attacked again later, while the Haradrim attacked from the South, bringing Gondor to near Ruin.
Menelvagor Valar (5:45:05 PM): ruin even, without the capital.
Menelvagor Valar (5:45:22 PM): Also the first time Gondor lost control of Ithilien I think.
Menelvagor Valar (5:45:36 PM): Gondor simply did not have the resources to repel both attacks.
Eonwe Valar (5:46:03 PM): I'm suspecting you're thinking of the Balchoth
Eonwe Valar (5:46:40 PM): (Was reading the appendices earlier this week for some reason or another)
Menelvagor Valar (5:47:19 PM): Well, they may also have been called the Easterlings already by then.
Eonwe Valar (5:48:32 PM): I'll allow it for now, and go digging for it in Aftermeeting, since we're almost done and I don't have a page readily available.
Eonwe Valar (5:48:47 PM): So Eorl counts.
Menelvagor Valar (5:49:22 PM): (be it noted that I mentioned plenty of connections to Eorl :-D)
Eonwe Valar (5:49:52 PM): Eorl connected through Sauron to the Wainriders? :}
Menelvagor Valar (5:49:52 PM): And I didn't mention a rather hazy one, but a good connection nonetheless :-D
Menelvagor Valar (5:50:35 PM): I meant connections to Eorl, not to the Wainriders, as that is currently still disputed :-)
Eonwe Valar (5:51:04 PM): Luthien gets the final association :}
luthienathariel (5:51:10 PM): the Battle of the Field of Celebrant
Menelvagor Valar (5:51:20 PM): And if we'd allow secondary and tertiary connections, we could connect everything to everything :-D
luthienathariel (5:51:25 PM): lol
Eonwe Valar (5:52:47 PM): Aye, Eorl and the Eothed fought the Balchoth there.
Eonwe Valar (5:53:04 PM): Ok, so our final association is...
Eonwe Valar (5:53:07 PM): Gloin > Gimli > Legolas > Mirkwood > Beorn (Challenged) > Radagast (Challenged) > White Council > Saruman > Isengard > Minas Tirith > Minas Ithil > Osgiliath > Faramir (Challenged) > Henneth Annun > Frodo > Gollum > Deagol > Gladden Fields > Narsil (Challenged) > Elendil > Gondor > Wain riders > Eorl (Challenged) > Battle of the Field of Celebrant
Eonwe Valar (5:53:21 PM): So by this logic Gloin > Battle of the Field of Celebrant, hehe :}
Eonwe Valar (5:53:37 PM): (I kid :})
AriehnV (5:53:38 PM): hehe :-) nice one *cheers *
Menelvagor Valar (5:54:03 PM): Oh, and the connection with Eorld should be found somewhere in Book 3, The Two Towers.
Menelvagor Valar (5:54:14 PM): http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/frames/encycfrms.htm
Eonwe Valar (5:54:39 PM): You'll have to right-click on the article and copy shortuct.
Eonwe Valar (5:54:53 PM): *shortcut
Menelvagor Valar (5:54:59 PM): actually, never mind that.
Menelvagor Valar (5:55:32 PM): the references of the text I am referring to are from UT, LotR and Tolkien Quiz Book.
Eonwe Valar (5:57:01 PM): Oh, to make it official..
Eonwe Valar (5:57:06 PM): *Bangs gavel*

Eonwe Valar (5:57:08 PM): Aftermeeting :}
Eonwe Valar (5:57:23 PM): If you have otehr tasks to attend to, feel free to do so :}
Eonwe Valar (5:57:28 PM): *other
Menelvagor Valar (5:57:59 PM): The Field of Celebrant was basicly known in Gondor as the place where Eorl had come to aid of Cirion in the Battle of Celebrant and the Easterlings had suffered a great defeat.
Menelvagor Valar (5:58:07 PM): from the Annals of Arda. [note: Elatan-(T) fka Amillo-(Valar)'s encyclopedia, cross-linked with the group-made Valar's]
Menelvagor Valar (5:58:15 PM): http://www.annalsofarda.dk/annals-of-arda/Places-index/Places.htm
Menelvagor Valar (5:58:29 PM): Does not mention the Wain Riders.
AriehnV (5:59:02 PM): wooops i searched for Eorl and got a file script
AriehnV (5:59:28 PM): anyone else?
Menelvagor Valar (5:59:36 PM): And yes, the Balchoth are mentioned.
Eonwe Valar (5:59:46 PM): "The third evil was the invasion of the Wainriders, which sapped the waning strength of Gondor in wars that lasted for almost a hundred years.
Menelvagor Valar (6:00:03 PM): http://www.annalsofarda.dk/annals-of-arda/Battles-index-tables/Battles/Battle-of-Celebrant.htm
Eonwe Valar (6:00:38 PM): The Wainriders were a people, or a confederacy of many peoples, that came from the East, but they were stronger and better armed than any that had appeared before. They journeyed in great wains, and their chieftains fought in chariots.
Eonwe Valar (6:01:13 PM): Stirred up, as was afterwards seen, by the emissaries of Sauron, they made a sudden assault upon Gondor, and King Narmacil II was slain in battle with them beyond Anduin in 1856..."
luthienathariel (6:01:34 PM): Novaer, mellyn in phain :)
luthienathariel (6:01:44 PM): lostathon!
luthienathariel (6:01:52 PM): bye
luthienathariel (6:01:56 PM) has left the room.
AriehnV (6:02:06 PM): Good night all :-)
Eonwe Valar (6:02:09 PM): Take care Luthien :}
Eonwe Valar (6:02:11 PM): And Arien :}
Menelvagor Valar (6:02:31 PM): Well then, although it be a secondary connection.... :P
AriehnV (6:02:34 PM) has left the room.
Menelvagor Valar (6:02:44 PM): Wain Riders > Easterlings > Eorl :-)
Eonwe Valar (6:02:47 PM): So the Wainriders were a bit early to be connected to Eorl. The men of Rhovanion, however, had already been joined with Gondor.
Menelvagor Valar (6:03:20 PM): Well, they were still Easterlings :P
Menelvagor Valar (6:03:48 PM): And as such, as hazy as it may be, I could even have said The Long Lake ^^
Menelvagor Valar (6:04:28 PM): Or rather, Esgaroth :-)
Eonwe Valar (6:04:38 PM): The Balchoth themselves seemed not to be Easterlings, if I'm reading this right, but were "strengthened by men from the East."
Menelvagor Valar (6:04:52 PM): dagnabbit :P
Menelvagor Valar (6:05:19 PM): oh well :-)
Menelvagor Valar (6:05:49 PM): One way or another I would have gotten to say Eorl anyways! *grin*
Menelvagor Valar (6:06:04 PM): depending on how long we would have taken :-D
Eonwe Valar (6:06:44 PM): "In the wide lands of Rhovanion, between Mirkwood and the River Running, a fierce people now dwelt, wholly under the shadow of Dol Guldor.... These Balchoth were constantly increased by others of like kind that came in from the east, whereas the people of Calenardhon had dwindled."
Eonwe Valar (6:07:02 PM): hehe
Menelvagor Valar (6:07:23 PM): hah :-)
Menelvagor Valar (6:07:34 PM): so the Balchoth were at worst half easterlings :-D
Eonwe Valar (6:08:06 PM): Perhaps.
Menelvagor Valar (6:08:46 PM): well, regardless, if I had said Anduin, Luthien could still have said the Battle of the Field of Celebrant :-)
Eonwe Valar (6:09:19 PM): Yeah.
Menelvagor Valar (6:10:37 PM): And I still like my Eorl connection, even if it was invalidated :-)
Eonwe Valar (6:10:54 PM): hehe
Menelvagor Valar (6:12:34 PM): Too bad you didn't pick anything that could be traced back to Gloin :-)
Eonwe Valar (6:12:48 PM): hehe
Menelvagor Valar (6:13:01 PM): Although...
Eonwe Valar (6:13:13 PM): Well, Gollum and Gloin were both under the Misty Mountains at some point.
Menelvagor Valar (6:13:21 PM): if I had said Anduin, Erebor would have been a viable connections :-)
Eonwe Valar (6:13:24 PM): Both had dealings with Goblins...
Menelvagor Valar (6:13:40 PM): true, true.
Menelvagor Valar (6:13:48 PM): but a bit vague in my opinion :-)
Eonwe Valar (6:14:14 PM): Both knew Bilbo :}
Menelvagor Valar (6:14:23 PM): point :-)
Menelvagor Valar (6:15:04 PM): Couldn't you just have said Elrond after Gondor though? :-)
Menelvagor Valar (6:15:19 PM): that would have been a nice challenge :-)
Menelvagor Valar (6:15:57 PM): and we should just have challenged the wain riders to get more information out of you for better ability to establish a new connection to them :-D
Eonwe Valar (6:16:15 PM): I kinda thought someone would :}
Menelvagor Valar (6:16:40 PM): Just that I was so convinced my memory would not fail me on the Eorl matter ^^
Eonwe Valar (6:16:52 PM): hehe
Menelvagor Valar (6:18:08 PM): oh well :-)
Menelvagor Valar (6:18:12 PM): it was fun :-)
Eonwe Valar (6:18:15 PM): Aye :}
Menelvagor Valar (6:18:43 PM): What do you think of a game to connect the final and first letters of a LotR name to each other?
Eonwe Valar (6:18:44 PM): And Arwen did well :}
Menelvagor Valar (6:18:50 PM): Aye :-)
Eonwe Valar (6:19:12 PM): Sounds like something we were doing on the Forum for a bit until we kept getting caught on the renaming people.
Menelvagor Valar (6:19:24 PM): Aye.
Menelvagor Valar (6:19:43 PM): But maybe something for the Valar Guild Birthday coming up?
Eonwe Valar (6:20:17 PM): On the forum or in the channel?
Menelvagor Valar (6:20:25 PM): channel perhaps?
Menelvagor Valar (6:20:33 PM): add a real time element to it :-)
Eonwe Valar (6:21:01 PM): probably need to set a time limit to keep the pace up, notthat we had to worry too much about it in this game.
Eonwe Valar (6:21:09 PM): Responses came pretty fast.
Menelvagor Valar (6:21:11 PM): btw, a fun fact I am sure you are aware of, but did you know / notice, that the forums most amount of users online simultaneously was 166? :-)
Menelvagor Valar (6:21:23 PM): Aye.
Eonwe Valar (6:21:30 PM): Aye, last year :}
Menelvagor Valar (6:21:56 PM): we could even set up a co-meeting within LotRO, with someone ferrying answers from there hither and to.
Eonwe Valar (6:22:18 PM): We'd need someone to do that.
Menelvagor Valar (6:22:26 PM): <-
Eonwe Valar (6:23:14 PM): That's right, you do have a LotRO account..
Menelvagor Valar (6:23:17 PM): I am always available for that, unless college classes prevent me from doing that, but I suppose I can take a day with little sleep no probs ^^
Menelvagor Valar (6:23:42 PM): thankfully it's a lifetime account, my WoW subscription ran into another payment problem today.
Menelvagor Valar (6:24:01 PM): But I'll look into that tomorrow.
Menelvagor Valar (6:24:12 PM): If I can't fix it though, I'll prolly just shut it down.
Menelvagor Valar (6:24:36 PM): Anyways, I am off to bed as well.
Menelvagor Valar (6:24:41 PM): Namarie!
Eonwe Valar (6:24:49 PM): Sleep well Menel :}
Eonwe Valar (6:24:53 PM): Have fun at college :}
Menelvagor Valar (6:24:59 PM): thanks.
Menelvagor Valar (6:25:13 PM): I have no clue about any classes though, and it should start tomorrow :P
Eonwe Valar (6:25:25 PM): :}
Menelvagor Valar (6:25:27 PM): faulty communications I blame.
Menelvagor Valar (6:25:38 PM): Anyways, sleep well.
Eonwe Valar (6:25:41 PM): You too :}
Menelvagor Valar (6:25:44 PM) has left the room.
fladrifv (6:39:44 PM): namarie all
fladrifv (6:40:06 PM) has left the room.
arwenv1 (7:43:57 PM) has left the room.
