metarus208: oh too bad ..... :-(
ArPharazonV: I'm a bit busy right now, so we'll start this in a

luthienathariel: same thing, in Sindarin
luthienathariel: "Greetings"
metarus208: oh
AriehnV

metarus208: aiya
ArPharazonV: yay Arien
AriehnV: Aiya there :-)
ArPharazonV: allright, we have an officer in the house
metarus208: an officer?
AriehnV: guess thats me lool
ArPharazonV: Varda and Eonwe sent emails earlier
AriehnV: I am a Maiar by rank, aye, ArienV
metarus208: oh
ArPharazonV: to each other, Menelvagor and myself
ArPharazonV: both are not likely to join for this meeting
ArPharazonV: so Arien gets to lead!
AriehnV: oh aye looks like i should chair then :-)
metarus208: your first chair I presume?
AriehnV: no not really
AriehnV: third i think

AriehnV: let me have a look at the
newspage , this comes as surprise
AriehnV: there is no
membership
news on news site , so may i ask if any of you fellows has any?
ArPharazonV: well, happy new
year, college's about to start again
metarus208: not me....
ArPharazonV: I'm not sure if I'm starting tomorrow or tuesday,
should really check...
metarus208: Oh yeah, I
forgot.... Happy New Year all! :-)
ArPharazonV: by the way, metarus
ArPharazonV: who are you? :-)
metarus208: Barahir-(V)
AriehnV: yes thats why i was a bit
puzzled
AriehnV: ah :-D
AriehnV: Barahir its been long time
i remember you
metarus208: i think we already met
before....
AriehnV: indeed
ArPharazonV: I'll add it as a note in my buddylist :-)
AriehnV: right
top
AriehnV: lets move on to
Web News
AriehnV: there is a new
art work in
Maedhros cave , a nice little cartoon
AriehnV:
http://www.valar.game-host.org/varda/gallery/MaedhrosGneech/caveMaedhrosGneech.htm
metarus208: nice...
AriehnV: Legolas does pest control
,neat work
AriehnV: has anyone of you any web
news?
AriehnV: tolkien related artwork or
an interesting article or such?
metarus208: not me
AriehnV: or just something you
would like to share
ArPharazonV: sorry
ArPharazonV: I got nothing ;-)
metarus208: pardon but no
AriehnV: thats all right :-)
top
AriehnV: so then
gaming news
metarus208: yay
AriehnV: has anyone played anything
besides WoW or LotrO?
ArPharazonV: I've played some
Rayman
ArPharazonV: but nothing much else :-)
ArPharazonV: Rayman 1, that is
metarus208: only
Rome:Total War here .... but offline
ArPharazonV: old platform game, Fladrif managed to get it running
on my pc via a program called Dosbox
AriehnV: computer game is computer game :-)
AriehnV: i heard much about Rome TW
, and tried it for a bit but its not my type of game i think
metarus208: I am kinda addicted to it
actually .... :-) ... I am histroy nut and it satisfies
my needs... so what can I say?
AriehnV: heehe a passion i can
fully understand :-D
AriehnV: since i find history
fascinating myself ,
metarus208: guess all Tolkien fans
find it fascinating .....
AriehnV: interesting thought we
will keep it in mind for tolkien moment or topic
metarus208: ok...
AriehnV: lets move on :-)
we dont need to drag for ages
AriehnV: so World of Warcraft
report
ArPharazonV: got any? :-)
AriehnV: I guess we can skip lotro since none of us played it this
week and those who did are absent hehe
metarus208: negative, commander
AriehnV: WoW Europe Argent Dawn
AriehnV: my druid Finduilaswen has
been active for a few hours yeah and woken up from the winter slumber
ArPharazonV: oh, Varda had some
lotro news tidbit
ArPharazonV: she said in her email "I hit the
cap, level 60, in
LotRO on Fainan."
ArPharazonV: so congratulations to Varda/Fainan :-)
ArPharazonV: sorry, go on ;-)
AriehnV: cool congratulations indeed :-)
metarus208: the cap level .... a
singular ahievement ... I never was able to reach Lvl 99 in Diablo
myself ....
AriehnV: i
still dream about level 80 on all my characters .. the closest being 73
on my paladin (Belf), but the levelling process needs stamina
ArPharazonV: oh, I'm 80 now, but the second-highest is my Death
Knight at 58..
ArPharazonV: I'm just too main-oriented to get my other characters
maxed out, really
AriehnV: my hunter is still 62 i think
metarus208: Level 64 on my Paladin
what's-his-name .... omg it's been two years since I played Diablo
AriehnV: thats no bad at all
AriehnV: i think i tried Diablo II
but never got very far
AriehnV: now i am too busy in
wow
AriehnV: anyway back to the report
AriehnV: In said waking period i
met our Friend Ar Pharazon in the Valar channel since we gloriously
miss each other always when online
AriehnV: anyway i plan on 72 this
week ;-)
AriehnV: i mean to reach level 72
AriehnV: any thing you want to add
, Phara?
ArPharazonV: well, I saw Menelvagor online a few times
ArPharazonV: on Anarore
ArPharazonV: but nothing much was said
ArPharazonV: oh, and I promoted your character in my guild ;-)
AriehnV: oh yes well noticed :-) very nice , i added
ten gold to Valar guild bank and played ten minutes on my valar priest
Ahrienn
AriehnV: which is where we caught
each other :-)
ArPharazonV: I myself have been mainly on Calaron, my druid
ArPharazonV: only logging other characters when I needed some
materials from them through the mail
ArPharazonV: notably my hunter, who carries all my
leatherworking-materials, which Calaron has been levelling
ArPharazonV: I've raided some on Calaron, and quested some, and am
now done with exploring the world, giving me the Northrend-exploring-
achievement
and the world-exploring-achievement
ArPharazonV: rewarded by respectively a tabard and a new title
AriehnV: congratulations :-D
ArPharazonV: so now I walk through life as Calaron the Explorer :-)
AriehnV: nice one :-)
AriehnV: i ve got no titles on the
druid , and on Justicia i ve got Jenkins :-) as on my lock
ArPharazonV: Justicia Jenkins? doesn't sound too bad
ArPharazonV: I've got about a dozen titles now
ArPharazonV: and in about 100 quests I'll have Loremaster too
AriehnV: cool
metarus208: a dozen titles.....
AriehnV: yeah a real achievement
hunter our Pharazon
ArPharazonV: well, I'm quite the achiever, indeed
ArPharazonV: currently at 356 achievements or so
ArPharazonV: and 3950 achievement points
AriehnV: i guess that concludes the gaming section we always can
come back to it in after meeting
ArPharazonV: sure
top
AriehnV: Tolkien
topic :-)
AriehnV: Now .. Barahir has
mentioned the fact that a lot if not all Tolkien fans are interested in
history
AriehnV: or if not interested than
fascinated by it
luthienathariel: I am
luthienathariel: but also by physics
metarus208: I am obessesd with anything that has anything to do with
Wars and Battles ,,,
AriehnV: meh what a combination ,
smirks
ArPharazonV:
while not as fascinated by modern history, I am interested in
mythology, as well as quite ancient Greek history... around Alexander
the Great, for example
metarus208: Hey me tooo .... I am a Quantum Physics nut also ...
luthienathariel: ah cool
AriehnV: (hates physics :P )
luthienathariel: what do you think of the Copenhagen interpretation?
ArPharazonV: my real fascination lies with the history of life,
though, over the past few billion years
ArPharazonV: I'm studying to become a biogeologist
luthienathariel: ow that's cool, too.
AriehnV: meh can u take that maybe in a private chat or side window
luthienathariel: why? It is interesting.
AriehnV: this belongs not into tolkien
luthienathariel: :D
luthienathariel: *sulk* allright
AriehnV: hehe keep it for aftermeeting :-)
ArPharazonV: as for human history, I'm interested in wars and
battles and the general history of territories and empires
metarus208: We hear and obey
luthienathariel: lol
AriehnV: ah come on :-) i try to keep the frame of
the meetings ;-)
ArPharazonV: and I guess that goes for Tolkien too
luthienathariel: yes, I am sorry. Just being a bit quirky.
AriehnV: so any idea why that interest in history sits in most
tolkien fans?
AriehnV: whats the connection?
ArPharazonV: because it's full of it, mostly
luthienathariel: sure
metarus208: Hey what about the Battles in Middle-earth ?
ArPharazonV: Lord of the Rings is placed in a setting with a lot
of history and makes a lot of history in itself
luthienathariel: what about them>
AriehnV: a lot of battles there then ok :-)
ArPharazonV: and the earlier books are even more full of history
luthienathariel: indeed.
AriehnV: lets settle on battles
AriehnV: its a bit more graspable
ArPharazonV: we have awakenings, migrations, alliances, battles,
wars, conquests....
ArPharazonV: a lot of war- and territorial history from the
Silmarillion to Lotr
ArPharazonV: sure, let's focus on the battles :-)
metarus208: I
think the first battle that involved the Children was the Battle of the
Quays wasn't it. Between the Noldor and the sea-going elves of Elwe?
AriehnV: The Teleri
AriehnV: aye the kinslaying at
Alqualonde
ArPharazonV: the first battle that involved them, sure, but the
war upon Morgoth made earlier was for their safety
metarus208: Ah yes, Aqualonde.... the names are beginning to fade
luthienathariel: yes, the Valar fought Melkor wayyy back
luthienathariel: twice, actually.
ArPharazonV: if I recall, there were 6 major battles in
Beleriand... there was a battle before the hosts arrived too
luthienathariel: the first time to "dry him off" b/c he was making a
mess of middle earth, and Tulkas had arrived especially for that
ArPharazonV: fought between Morgoth's forces on one hand and the
Sindar and Greenelves on the other hand
AriehnV: i think i vaguely remember they first went to Utumno ..
was that the first of Morgoths fortresses?
luthienathariel: and the second time was as a precaution because he
was doing bad things to the Eldar
ArPharazonV: yep
ArPharazonV: at that point they imprisoned him in Mandos for 7
ages of the world, I think
metarus208: the first battle of Beleriand was between Elu Thingol,
his allies and the first orc-hordes I believe?
luthienathariel: 3
ArPharazonV: 3 ages?
luthienathariel: yes
ArPharazonV:
and yes, that was the first battle... but the leader of his allies
(don't remember his name) fell in the battle, and many joined Thingol's
realm from thereon
metarus208: I think he fell near a famous hill or mountain
ArPharazonV: I believe those allies were the green-elves from
Ossiriand, and never after did they go to open war
ArPharazonV:
the first battle they fought again was against the Dwarves in the north
of their lands, where they were led by Beren, but that's another story
:-)
luthienathariel:
"There was Melkor doomed to abide for three ages long, before his cause
should be tried anew, or he should plead again for pardon. "
metarus208: The second was of course, the famous Battle Under the
Stars, where Feanor drove the hordes of Mordor bak up north ....
metarus208: thanks for the quote ....
ArPharazonV: thanks :-)
ArPharazonV: the 7 might have been from another version then
luthienathariel: true ...
AriehnV: meh i think we need a list wtith the battles somewhere ..
if that isnt already on the site
AriehnV: i sense a new project or
something
ArPharazonV: I'll take a look at the encyclopedia
metarus208: I am for it .... i'm the battle-nut
ArPharazonV: hey, we're all battle-nuts here!
luthienathariel: I'm not
ArPharazonV: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/b/Beleriand/BattlesofBeleriand.htm
metarus208: ok ... :-)
AriehnV: hehe i guess so else we
wouldnt play wow lol
ArPharazonV: it's already there
luthienathariel: ah that explains it then.
AriehnV: there we are
AriehnV: yeah i forgot about that
firstbattle .. good addition of Varda , the one that sparked the
setting up of the girdle of Melian
ArPharazonV: we did mention it earlier, though not that it was the
incentive for the girdle ;-)
AriehnV: the kinslaying is not mentioned though
luthienathariel: maybe bc they are "technically" not battles.
luthienathariel: there have been three kinslayings, though.
AriehnV: i think the battles listed here are just in Beleriand
ArPharazonV: the first one didn't even take place in Beleriand
ArPharazonV: the other 2, however...
metarus208: it wasn't in beleriand no? ... I valinor itseld
luthienathariel: two of the three kinslayings have been in ...'yes
ArPharazonV: I suppose they don't count as battles, indeed
ArPharazonV: the fall of Gondolin isn't mentioned either
metarus208: one in Menegroth and other one at Cirdan's port or
something... wherer Earendil set out from ...
ArPharazonV: I think that single assaults against cities/villages
were not taken into account, only open battle
metarus208: neither is the Battle of Tumhlad, the battle for
Nargothrond wherer Turnin led the elves to a glorious defeat ....
ArPharazonV:
the falls of neither Nargothrond or Gondolin aren't mentioned, the two
battles at Menegroth aren't mentioned, the battle between the
greenelves and the Dwarves isn't mentioned
ArPharazonV: and the battle at the Mouths of Sirion isn't mentioned
ArPharazonV: yes, I imagine it only includes large, multi-faction,
open-field warfare
ArPharazonV: though why then the second battle is counted I do not
know
AriehnV: hmm
it might be worth consulting Varda about that Barahir , maybe write her
an email and ask whether you might come up with a full list in the
whole of middleearth over all the books
metarus208: cuz its the first battle
involving the Noldor in Middle-earth?
metarus208: will do ....
ArPharazonV: I fail to see why Tumhalad was not mentioned and the
battle of lake Mithrim was :-)
metarus208: gotta take some time though ... my first Semester exams
are aprroaching ...
AriehnV: :-) ok right
lets have a run through what else we can remember .. i
ArPharazonV: there does not seem to be a significant difference
for inclusion
AriehnV: sure take ur time such a project is quite some research
and a lot of work
AriehnV: it was just a silly idea
from me me which i voiced u dont have to take it up
metarus208: maybe only alrge-scale
invasions out of Angband is considered?
ArPharazonV: perhaps, but then why was the fall of Gondolin not
mentioned? :-)
metarus208: it will be my pleasure to work on it.... my own "Battle
of the Corssings of the Erui' isn't going anywhere ......
metarus208: not large-scale .... it
was kinda single minded ....
ArPharazonV: does the same not go for the Battle under Stars? :-)
metarus208: gotta a point
metarus208: I think the second battle
is the rebel here ....
metarus208: ... but Tolkien himseld
included it and I think we have to leave it at that ....
ArPharazonV: you too have a point...
ArPharazonV: he must have had a reason, so a reason must exit
ArPharazonV: *exist
ArPharazonV: is that all the answer we need?
metarus208: yep ...
ArPharazonV: or do we wish to speculate more on that reason?
metarus208: I
think the force for Dagor-un- Giliath was the reinforcements for the
troops for the battle .... so they are kinda part of the same battle ...
metarus208: reinforcements for the
first battle ... sry
metarus208: oh ..... my head's
starting to loll....
AriehnV: hehe its getting late
whats the time for u Barahir?
metarus208: 0459 hrs ....
AriehnV: ouch
metarus208: wat about u? ... where are
u actully?
ArPharazonV: that is late
metarus208: actually its early ...
ArPharazonV: hehe
AriehnV: or early *dry*, its half past elven here
metarus208: my folks get up at
0445-0530 .... so go figure
ArPharazonV: well, I always judge very late and very early by one
question...
ArPharazonV: have you slept, or are you going to sleep still?
ArPharazonV: if you just got up, it's early :-)
metarus208: no got college .... gotta catch the bus by 0636 hrs ...
ArPharazonV: that's still one and a half hours away!
metarus208: yep .. that's why I am here .....but I admit I am geting
a bit groggy ...
ArPharazonV: how long's the busride?
AriehnV: ah
so its early , i d say lets call the meeting w while we enjoy it and we
have seen that Battles are indeed an thankful and interesting topic for
tolkien discussion :-)
AriehnV: /
AriehnV: Thanks for that Barahir :-)
ArPharazonV: Thank you for the topic indeed :-)
metarus208: depends ... while going 1hr to to 1:15 adn while coming
back 1:30
top
AriehnV: *bangs gavel* after meeting
ArPharazonV: makes me want to play Battle for Middle-earth again
ArPharazonV: ah
ArPharazonV: plenty of time to catch more sleep!
metarus208: makes crave for RTW
metarus208: it
takes one hour for preparation .... and I am a very reluctant riser
.... so If I fall asleep I may miss the bus ... So i'd rather be awake
and talk to u guys ....
metarus208: .... gals included
ArPharazonV: well, I meant
ArPharazonV: catching some sleep while in the bus :-)
ArPharazonV: or is it on the bus?
ArPharazonV: not sure about English grammar
AriehnV: on the bus i think
metarus208: I ahve a talent at
sleeping ... but of late even that is eluding me
metarus208: on the bus I believe ....
ArPharazonV: while bussing, in any case ;-)
metarus208: hehe ...
AriehnV: is it a publc bus or just
a special school bus that pciks u up?
metarus208: Private College bus...
metarus208: now can we talk about
Alexander of Macedon ?
AriehnV: aye about anything u like :-D
ArPharazonV: and Alexander wept, for there were no more lands to
conquer...
AriehnV: we are just trying to keep it formal for the so called
*business meeting* but before and after we are big familiy of freinds
metarus208: tell that to Chandragupta
Maurya
metarus208: *hugs family*
AriehnV: *hugs back*
AriehnV: ah well dear friends i
have to go now i have to work tomorrow at six and get up in four hours
and a bit
metarus208: wat time is for u again?
AriehnV: 20 to midnight now
metarus208: nasty ....
metarus208: 4 hrs ... Yikes
ArPharazonV: that's not a lot of time to sleep
metarus208: wat do u do to get up at 0400 hrs?
AriehnV: i usually get up 20
minutes past four
metarus208: and I thought my wake up
tme was nasty ...
AriehnV: or when i start at nine or
twelve at twenty past seven .. thats the best way to catch a bit gaming
time
ArPharazonV: same, and I get up at 6, the earliest
ArPharazonV: well
AriehnV: hehe u get used to it i ve lived four or five years like
that
ArPharazonV: what time do you usually go to bed then?
AriehnV: around midnight
metarus208: same here ...
ArPharazonV: you've gone for 4-5 years with usually nothing more
than 4 hours of sleep?
ArPharazonV: I admire your stamina
ArPharazonV: a lifestyle like that would shatter me, no doubt
AriehnV: *blushes and nods * , add the occasional hour more
metarus208: doesn't that lead to
depression or some such ?
AriehnV: but yes mstly like that
luthienathariel: oh I go on little sleep too
metarus208: I would breakdown within days of that lifestyle ...
AriehnV: nah i am all right Barahir
:-)
luthienathariel: I actually asked a doc, and he said that it is not so
that everyone ideally needs 8 hrs. Some can do with less.
ArPharazonV: imagine how much better you could be on 7-8 hours
instead ;-)
metarus208: 7 for us teens ...
metarus208: was about u luthien?
luthienathariel: ?
luthienathariel: what?
ArPharazonV: well, that's what vacations are for... I usually go
with 9-10 hours in weeks like these
metarus208: sleeping hours
luthienathariel: about 5, 6 max
ArPharazonV: go to bed at 2-3 am, wake up at noon or 1 am
ArPharazonV: *1 pm
luthienathariel: argh, that kills me. Too much sleep
AriehnV: aye Phara , thats when i catch up too or on days off
metarus208: wow .... wish I could do
that!
ArPharazonV: only during the holidays, Barahir
ArPharazonV: well, and weekends
metarus208: .... I catch up in class ... when I can get away with it
....
ArPharazonV: ...and days off
AriehnV: lol *pats Barahir*]#
ArPharazonV: I tend to catch up in the train these days
AriehnV: well now ur keeping me awake :-D
ArPharazonV: I haven't fallen asleep in class for years
metarus208: how can u sleep in a city train?
AriehnV: are u saving the scrpt ,
Phara and sending it to Varda?
ArPharazonV: and even then it was only occasionally or during
breaks
metarus208: not until I joined College for me ....
ArPharazonV: yah, I'm saving, though you're welcome to send your
own copy
metarus208: is it Phar or Phara?
AriehnV: oki do
ArPharazonV: I don't really care.. I've been known as Phar, Phara,
Arphy...
ArPharazonV: I like 'em all
metarus208: I remember Arphy ...
AriehnV: well its been a pleasure
being with you once again
AriehnV: Namarie for now :-)
ArPharazonV: namarie
metarus208: Namarie
AriehnV
has left the room.
metarus208: au revoir ....
arwenv1
has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: as for the train, it's usually open landscape, with
only a few stops in-between for a ride of 40 minutes
metarus208: so u get a seat?
ArPharazonV: oh yes, it's usually not very crowded
ArPharazonV: I often have a space of 4 seats for myself from time
to time :-)
metarus208: I my city ... u will be luck to get a seat in any
transport ....
metarus208: ... lots of typos
ArPharazonV:
only when I take the train back in the late afternoon, it's quite
crowded and I'm lucky to have a place to sit, let alone an actual seat
:-)
metarus208: that's the case here .....all the time
ArPharazonV: but the train empties gradually on the way home, so
halfway I'm usually able to sit down
ArPharazonV: people often use cars here, public transportation is
not that much used, though used often enough to make it profitable
metarus208: *ooh mosque prayer started*
metarus208: Chennai lives on Public
Transport .... if it weren't for it 80% of the workforce would have
been rendered immobile ...
ArPharazonV: see, that
ArPharazonV: is one of the things I don't like about organised
religion...
ArPharazonV: "scheduled" rituals and prayers etc
metarus208: ..... well its not my religion so u just talk ....
ArPharazonV:
if you are religious, you should be able to practice it in your own way
without necessarily conforming to strict human-made regulations
ArPharazonV: but let's not have the religion-conversation again :-)
ArPharazonV: whatever works for people, works
ArPharazonV: and I'm not one to try to convince you to change your
ways as long as you don't try it either :-)
metarus208: well
.... next time ... I am a bit grooggy and I had only thee hours of
sleep ... I usually sleep 7-8 hrs these days ... but I will pick it up
with u
ArPharazonV: sure, have fun at college :-)
metarus208: .... i am not religious and I am a Hindu besides ... not
Muslim or Christian or Jain
ArPharazonV: Hinduism is a religion, nonetheless
ArPharazonV:
one I don't know much about, granted... I have no idea what rituals you
have or what strict regulations you have (though I believe there was
something about the holy cow?)
metarus208: ... I am a non-practioner ... only go to the rituals when
they take me there by the scruff of the neck ....
ArPharazonV: hah
metarus208: ..... which is most of the time ...
ArPharazonV: well, if you're going to be religious, that's the
best way to be religious, I guess...
ArPharazonV: less limiting to your daily life in any case
metarus208: ....
we are very strict observers actually ... I am part of Orthodox family
... Orthoda enoguh to make you tear your hair out ...
ArPharazonV: ouch
metarus208: but I'll live ... that's all that matters ...
ArPharazonV: I guess that's true
metarus208: so ... what else ?
ArPharazonV: no idea
metarus208: well then its farewell time again ....
ArPharazonV: perhaps
ArPharazonV: did Alexander ever reach India? I forgot
luthienathariel: I think he got to Turkey
ArPharazonV: I know he got Persia, and stopped at the Himalayans
metarus208: he reached the Jehlum and crossed it to defeat Porus
ArPharazonV: but India, I don't know
metarus208: Jehlum is in India .... its part of Punjab
ArPharazonV: ah
ArPharazonV: so at least partially, then?
metarus208: but then again Pakistan was still part of India then ....
he visited Quetta and Multan ....
metarus208: Yes
.... when he wanted to conquer the plains his armies mutinied when they
leartnt that the Indian king was waiting for them across the Ganges

Eonwe Valar: Glad to hear we had someone to take care of the meeting.
ArPharazonV: hmhm
ArPharazonV: she handled it well
Eonwe Valar: Barahir say anything interesting?
Eonwe Valar: I'm guessing "very active"
= Tolkien chat?
ArPharazonV: yes, though gaming also
Eonwe Valar: Ah, ok
ArPharazonV: the topic was a correlation between liking history
and liking Tolkien/lotr
ArPharazonV: and we eventually focused on battles, and the 6
battles of Beleriand
Eonwe Valar: Cool.
Eonwe Valar: Would you mind including
me in the mailing when you send Varda a copy of the meeting?
