Saeros and Eltrom
Research Notes
The background of this story is found in Narn I Hîn Húrin:
Saeros, a Nandorin Elf of Doriath and the son of Ithilbor, has a grudge
against Túrin foster-son of King Thingol of Doriath; he mocked
the mortal youth and his ancestry and appearance, who responded at last
one night, during the absence of the king, by casting a heavy chalice
into the sneering face of the Elf and causing thus his face to be
broken. Then the inflamed young man drew his sword; indeed things would
have fared ill for the Elf, whose strength and hardiness were less, had
not Mablung the Hunter who sat near at hand restrained him.
My story has this background of the actions,
remarks, and feelings of Saeros, Túrin ‘Doldunn Dember’, and
Mablung. All quotes by this last are from the Narn. The structure of this scene is found in the Narn:
‘Túrin…set himself in that very place where Saeros was
accustomed to sit…Túrin was not rebuked by those that sat there,
but welcomed among them. (Which gives the image of Saeros’ friend
sympathizing with Túrin.)’ ‘Saeros…did not abate his wrath, and
through the night (after the feast) his malice grew, nursing his
injury.’ It was the day after the night of my tale that Saeros
attempted to kill Túrin.
The languages are a mixture of Ilkorin and its
branch Doriathrin, the languages spoken in Doriath during that time.
The names Doldunn, Eltrom, and Dember are my own inventions; they are Ilkorin-Doriathrin names.
