Good to see folks here. Are you all finding Discord convenient?
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:08 PM
Sure.
It's no AIM, but it works.
VardaToday at 4:08 PM
heh. Beats AIM just by existing, at least.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:08 PM
Sad but true
VardaToday at 4:09 PM
Leave messages between fights by typing, handy.
or when a buddy is offline.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:09 PM
Yes, the offline thing is handy.
ArienVToday at 4:09 PM
i quite like it that the various servers can have underchannels
and there can be various servers next to each other in a
convenient interface so you can switch from one to the other without
problem
VardaToday at 4:10 PM
Agreed, Arien.

Web:
Started back up on the Line of Kings, thanks to the new HTML editor.
So there's a small update for:
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/k/kings/kingsMan.htm
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/k/kings/KingsofArthedain.htm
Eonwe ValarToday at 4:13 PM
Heya all.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:14 PM
Aiya!
VardaToday at 4:14 PM
These are parts of the project for the Line of Kings.
Eonwe! Aiya!
Fantastic that you could make it. Congrats!
Eonwe ValarToday at 4:14 PM
Thanks. Glad to be here :}
VardaToday at 4:15 PM
As part of that continuing update , new small articles have been
added for the Line of Kings:
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/a/Amlaith.htm
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/b/BelegKing.htm
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/m/Mallor.htm
Then I ran out of time before the meeting. : )
Also, trying to start into improving the site by adding
diacriticals.
Being no computer genius, these are going in manually and takes a
while, but it's happening.
Trying to be sure to add them to anything new going in.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:16 PM
What is a diacritical?
VardaToday at 4:17 PM
Those little marks above and below letters that we don't use in
English, like the umlaut above the E in Eonwe.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:17 PM
Ah, those.
Eonwe ValarToday at 4:17 PM
ë
VardaToday at 4:17 PM
That, aye!
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:17 PM
I think we just call them accents.
VardaToday at 4:18 PM
An accent as I learned it is just a single slash going up, above a
letter. Not the same thing. But it might be a synonym that I'd
better learn, so thanks!
ArienVToday at 4:18 PM
Aiya Eonwe
VardaToday at 4:19 PM
Eonwe has the hang of typing those in, yay!
ArienVToday at 4:19 PM
how do you do that?
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:19 PM
I think we call most of them accents, like a slash forward, a slash
backward, that little hat thingy..
not sure if the umlaut is counted among them.
AnarionToday at 4:20 PM
Haha, definitely
ElrondToday at 4:20 PM
aiya
Eonwe ValarToday at 4:20 PM
Alt-137 for that, but in html code I would suggest using the HTML
special code to not break anything/ensure it shows.
VardaToday at 4:20 PM
Aiya Elrond : )
ArienVToday at 4:20 PM
aiya Elrond
VardaToday at 4:20 PM
According to the dictionary on accent: a distinct emphasis given to
a syllable or word in speech by stress or pitch.
Eonwe ValarToday at 4:20 PM
For fun: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diacritic
Diacritic
A diacritic – also diacritical mark, diacritical
point, diacritical sign, or an accent – is a glyph added to a
letter, or basic glyph. The term derives from the Ancient Greek
διακριτικός (diakritikós, "distinguishing"), from διακρίνω
(diakrī́nō, "to...
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:20 PM
Aiya Elrond!
VardaToday at 4:20 PM
Thanks
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:21 PM
first line of that article:
"A diacritic – also diacritical mark, diacritical
point, diacritical sign, or an accent –"
Accent works \o/
VardaToday at 4:21 PM
Eonwe, please let me know if I'm breaking the code. Just been copy
pasting mostly.
Long as we know what we're referring to. Diacritic, accent, okie
dokie.
ArienVToday at 4:22 PM
i cant do those ^^
VardaToday at 4:22 PM
Have to set up the keyboard for it, I think.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:23 PM
ç
eh, not really an accent
VardaToday at 4:23 PM
But it is a diacritical mark.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:23 PM
then it counts!
VardaToday at 4:23 PM
yay!
Anyway, it feels good to have article web news again. : )
On to
Gaming!
Eonwe is currently digging up a table for HTML diacritical marks,
because he is awesome.

the house. That says more about the others than about me.
Eonwe ValarToday at 4:53 PM

VardaToday at 5:00 PM
Any other stuff anyone would like to bring up, gaming or otherwise?
Suggestions for improvement, congrats, more gaming stuff? Arien
needs birch in LotRO.
Then onward to

Tolkien!
Anything such as links, topics, news you'd like to bring up for
Tolkien?
Elanor. What does that word bring up for you?
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:04 PM
A flower, to start with.
VardaToday at 5:04 PM
Sam was going to name his first child Frodo, but
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:04 PM
Also daughter of Sam.
VardaToday at 5:04 PM
Aye, Phar.
it was a girl, so he asked Frodo for a suggestion.
ArienVToday at 5:06 PM
the flower on cerin Amroth wasnt it?
VardaToday at 5:06 PM
Frodo suggested that half the girls in the Shire were named for
flowers. Sam was worried that most of the names they had heard
for flowers on their travels were too grand. He must have still been
trying to honor Frodo, with that thought.
"Frodo thought for a moment. 'Well, Sam, what
about elanor, the sun-star, you remember the little golden flower in
the grass of Lothlorien?'"
Right, Arien. : )
Haldir calls it the yellow elanor and says that it is a winter
flower, but Lothlorien lets it bloom all year.
What did Sam's daughter, Elanor, do that was important? This would
especially matter to JRRT.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:09 PM
Was she the one who collected the written work?
VardaToday at 5:10 PM
Right
She was the heir to the book started by Bilbo and continued by
Frodo.
AnarionToday at 5:12 PM
Oh wow, that is one I would've never guessed
VardaToday at 5:13 PM
Why did they call it the Red Book of Westmarch?
ArienVToday at 5:14 PM
The West march of the Northern Kingdom ? maybe another name of the
Shire?
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:14 PM
If I recall, Elanor and descendants ended up running the new
province of the Shire, Westmarch... married to the son of Pippin?
ArienVToday at 5:14 PM
And Red book because it contained important things?
VardaToday at 5:15 PM
Elanor married Fastred, who became a Warden of the Westmarch.
ArienVToday at 5:15 PM
and had a red binding mayube?
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:15 PM
And the Red Book was the collection of writings of Bilbo and Frodo
and the Elven stuff which they gathered together there, as the
source of Tolkien's works
AnarionToday at 5:17 PM
The book definitely had a red cover in the movies...(sorry).
VardaToday at 5:17 PM
Nothing to be sorry about. : )
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:17 PM
Thought it was more brown-ish. Guess they look alike
VardaToday at 5:17 PM
In RotK, Appendix B, near the end of the timeline,
1482 is where Sam gives the Red Book to Elanor, as he starts his
ride to the West.
He does this at the Tower Hills
So he does seem to have been on his way to the Grey Havens.
Anything else anyone wants to add? : )
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:20 PM
Well, according to legend, he did pass over to Valinor as the last
of the Ringbearers.
And as we know, if legend is not contradicted, it's always true
VardaToday at 5:20 PM
It does say The Red Book, so it may have been one book.
Possible that it could have been more than one volume in a red
holder, but I don't see any proof of such a thing.
All I find is that they seem to add pages to that one book.
AnarionToday at 5:22 PM
Hrm, that must have been a truly massive tome. Wikipedia says
concerning the red book of the westmarch
:
Bilbo had translated material from Elvish lore
from the Elder Days. This work, Translations from the Elvish, by
B.B., comprised three volumes, also bound in red leather. After the
defeat of Sauron (the Lord of the Rings) Bilbo gives these volumes
to Frodo. These four volumes were "probably" (according to Tolkien)
kept in a single red case.[3][5]
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:22 PM
Ah, a single red case.
There's your red holder.
AnarionToday at 5:22 PM
But just cites RotK
VardaToday at 5:23 PM
So maybe more digging is needed.
ArienVToday at 5:23 PM
interesting wee trivia about pages and the red book which just
sprang randomly to mind
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:23 PM
I'll go grab my rotk.
VardaToday at 5:24 PM
Interesting. Looking at Wikipedia, it mentions:
Tolkien's inspiration[8][9] for this repository
of lore was the real Red Book of Hergest, the early 15th century
compilation of Welsh history and poetry that contains the manuscript
of the Mabinogion. Bound (and rebound) in red leather, in the
Bodleian Library, Oxford, the manuscript was well known to Tolkien.
ArienVToday at 5:24 PM
J. r. R. designed *original pages of the red book * to be
included in the published version of Lord of the Rings to make them
more attractive to the audience . but he was too late finishing them
and Unwin and Allan werent quite happy with them
AnarionToday at 5:24 PM
Oh, Wikipedia actually cites specifically the Prologue, "Note on the
Shire Records" and "Many Partings" in RotK
ArienVToday at 5:24 PM
i have seen them though at the exhibition and they look great
facsimile they called it facsimile pages
VardaToday at 5:26 PM
Many Partings includes this:
Then he (Bilbo) gave Frodo his mithril-coat and
Sting, forgetting that he had already done so; and he gave him also
three books of lore that he had made at various times, written in
his spidery hand, and labeled on their red backs:
Translations from the Elvish, by B.B."
Later in the chapter it says:
"Collect all my notes and papers, and my diary
too, and take them with you, if you will."
ahhh here!
The Grey Havens chapter:
"In the next day or two Frodo went through his
papers and his writings with Sam, and he handed over his keys.
"There was a big book with plain red leather
covers; its tall pages were now almost filled.
"At the beginning there were many leaves covered
with Bilbo's thin wandering hand;
"but most of it was written in Frodo's firm
flowing script.
"It was divided into chapters but Chapter 80 was
unfinished,
"and after that were some blank leaves.
"The title page had many titles on it, crossed
out one after another, so..."
And below, Frodo tells Sam the last pages are for Sam.
Sounds as if it is one book.
Bilbo seems fond of red bindings. : )
AnarionToday at 5:35 PM
So there were 3 books of lore written by Bilbo, but the actual red
book to which we refer was just one huge volume, not with a
rediculous number of pages, but with very large pages.
VardaToday at 5:36 PM
The three books referred to earlier were books of lore, translations
from the Elvish, apparently not his own writing.
Aye, "tall pages"
Now we need to find that Note on the Shire Records.
ArienVToday at 5:37 PM
tall as in hobbit - tall which according to Pippin and Merry was 3
foot six or 3 foot seven :)?
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:37 PM
tall writing.. isn't that a saying?
AnarionToday at 5:38 PM
Hopefully not that tall. It could also be a turn of phrase I
suppose, but not one that is used today.
VardaToday at 5:40 PM
Tall story. : )
Still looking for the Notes on the Shire Records
ArienVToday at 5:41 PM
i think so ah  tall story which the publishing company
thought which wouldnt sell very well
ha .. little did they know
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:41 PM
Right, that's it.
VardaToday at 5:42 PM
in the Prologue, well in
AnarionToday at 5:42 PM
Could definitely be a turn of phrase, see https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tall
definition 3a.
Definition of TALL
high in stature; of a specified height; of
considerable height… See the full definition
VardaToday at 5:42 PM
Next to last page of the prolog
ahhhh, here we go.
A bit long to copy it all here.
The origin was Bilbo's private little diary which he took with him
to Rivendell.
Frodo brought it back to the Shire along with loose notes , and
added to it himself. Along with it:
"But annexed to it and preserved with it,
probably in a single red case, were the three large volumes, bound
in red leather, that Bilbo gave him as a parting gift. To these four
volumes there was added in Westmarch a fifth containing
commentaries, genealogies, and various other matter concerning the
hobbit members of the Felllowship."
Eonwe ValarToday at 5:48 PM
Ladies and gentlemen, I must be off for the evening. I was good to
see you all.
*It was good to see you all.
VardaToday at 5:48 PM
"The original Red Book has not been preserved,
but many copies were made, especially of the first volume..."
Eonwe ValarToday at 5:48 PM
Take care, good night, sleep well, and have fun.
VardaToday at 5:48 PM
Namarie Eonwe!
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:49 PM
Namarie!
There we go. Multiple volumes in a red case.
VardaToday at 5:49 PM
Aye.
When it became the Red Book of the Westmarch.
I recommend reading that section in the Prologue, too much to type
here, but intriguing.
Including the mention of Barahir, grandson of Steward Faramir. : )
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:51 PM
I'm sure Barahir would've liked a hobbit named after him.
VardaToday at 5:51 PM
Might have had one, but this Barahir is Eowyn's grandson.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:52 PM
Oh, right.
Different faramir.
VardaToday at 5:52 PM
I wouldn't put it past them since they did use Faramir's name.
Trivia item: Faramir and Sam shared a birthday.
A red-bound hammer marches to the hammerpad

Yesterday i had a rare saturday off in Inverness to attend something
very special
That was the march for independence there attended by many many
groups and a sea of banners and songs and people :)#
ArienVToday at 6:00 PM
Disregarding the political occasion it was an awesome and
unforgettable experience if you ever been at something l ike tha
AnarionToday at 6:02 PM
Nice. I admit I had to google Inverness because I didn't know
whether that's in Catalonia, Ireland, Scotland, or Quebec.(edited)
ArienVToday at 6:03 PM
Scotland .. although i am sure there is one in Australia and maybe
one in Nova Scotia or else Canada
probably even in the States
AnarionToday at 6:04 PM
There is indeed an Iverness in both Australia and Nova Scotia (well
done!), but they wouldn't be very natural sites for an independence
demonstration(edited)
I've never been at something like that, and I hope I'm never in a
position to be, but I understand how that would be awesome

Personal gaming report!
Got 3 small-ish flashgames for you
today. Well, how small kinda depends on how fast you go through
them; one of them took me quite a while, yet I've seen 3-minute
speedruns on youtube
http://www.freewebarcade.com/game/temple-of-the-golden-watermelon/
is the first one! 3d platformer where you play a watermelon slice,
making your way across a watermelon land, using pieces of watermelon
to cross obstacles. Really weird, but fun  Last jump is the
hardest though!
I couldn't get the game to play on Firefox because of some web
assembly thing missing, but it did work on Chrome, so keep that in
mind if you're having trouble.
http://www.freewebarcade.com/game/get-out-of-this-dungeon/
is the second game! Platformer, retro style. Make your way across
the rooms, picking up different types of armor to get a few new
abilities you'll need, and collect the gems to open the door.
It's the one that took me quite a while, but there's unlimited lives
(and some well-placed checkpoints) so just keep going.
ArienVToday at 6:26 PM
Well i have to call it friends ;0
VardaToday at 6:26 PM

https://www.kongregate.com/games/Lu_Muja/dead-detective-vs-nine-deaths-cat
is the third game! Part of a point and click series where you solve
crimes in a zombie society, by gathering and combining clues into
conclusions (though it is possible to get the wrong conclusions). In
this case, it's about finding an infamous burglar and preventing the

Blizzard gaming!
Hearthstone:
Fire Festival is over now, made good use of the double rewards. Even
got a new legendary, the hunter minion Emeriss.
Brawl was not against other player this week, but against 2
elemental lords (Ragnaros and Ahune) tag-teaming. One with a hero
power to do 3 damage to a random enemy, and one with a hero power to
do one damage, and if a minion dies from it, summon a minion.
I got through it with a jade druid deck, ramping up multiple minions
for Ragnaros while making sure they were at higher health for Ahune.
Once it got rolling, the multiple enemy heroes with a lot of health
didn't really matter anymore because I could just keep on pushing
out jade minions until they went nearly 20/20 in stats. I was aware
of possibilities of jade druid before, but it was fun to really push
it into the higher levels
Druid's also the first hero to reach level 55, unlocking my first
golden River Crocolisk. A really useful minion in basic decks, I'd
been using the river crocolisk in several, and have now upgraded one
to golden  Fun to see gold take over a bit more in my decks.
Heroes of the Storm:
Level 291 now. The one level was my 15th Artanis level, getting him
to gold. When they're at 15/gold I usually switch to a different
hero for that franchise/type, which in this case will be Dehaka. I'm
pretty clueless about Dehaka but I'm sure that the next time I get
something for Starcraft or Warrior I'll try to figure out a build
for him. It looks fun, though!
Brawl was the garden arena, use random heroes to collect 100 seeds
before your enemy does to break their core.
I actually found myself in 2 brawl rounds with all 10 players
forcedly playing Gul'dan, which is a rather low chance. Was fun
though, since it is a hero I'm familiar with.
WoW:
Nothing new from the old raids, though we did establish that pets
too can be traded freely between partymembers when they drop in the
legacy loot system, which is good, because I'm the only one who
needs the snobold. I won't need to solo it
We had one alt-raid (though I used my main) in normal Antorus, where
I actually picked up quite a few missing appearances. We really
didn't do much normal before switching to heroic, it seems, so a lot
were missing, though every bit helps
The alt-raid for tonight was cancelled though, with only 2 people
interested/available. Which does not seems promising for the future.
And by future I mean the next 2 weeks or so because after that
everyone will be busy in Battle for Azeroth anyway.
Which I'll be missing a few days of at the start, since we've
decided on a date for my brother and I to visit my parents on
vacation, which will be 16 to 19 of august. But that's fine; it'll
allow me to do some allied races and undercity stuff in the first
few days, and then skip the actual main story in Kul Tiras etc until
I get back, after the larger player crowds have passed through and
things have calmed down a bit
Weekly quest was mythic dungeons, which I had been dreading a bit
because of the loss of artifact traits, and my daily heroic karazhan
being more of a pain; but I actually completed the quest pretty fast
with a group doing Maw of Souls 3 times in a row. Could only get
loot once, but they did count for the quest, and it was quite short
Finished the Gilneas starting zone for my worgen! He's level 15 now,
and resting in Darkshore after completing the evacuation to
Teldrassil, and purchasing the worgen-only raven pet from Lor'danel.
He can rest there for a while, and will probably join my other low
level alts in Ironforge at some point for stuff like Winter Veil
gifts. I hope to level him further one day, but that goes for all my
alts
War of the Thorns, leading up to the battle for Teldrassil, has
arrived! First questline, ending up with unlocking the Darkshore
world quests, 4 a day, giving random pieces of a set which is
different for each class. The appearances are the same as from
boosts or the garrison salvage yard, though, so there's always other
ways to get them. That said, I did complete the entire set except
one weapon through the world quests, and have completed 11 out of 12
(I think?) possible WQs, though that is not related to the missing
weapon, because the rewards are random.
And just in time I think I managed to shake off the habit of
checking all the WQs on the broken isles, merely checking the pvp
quests for marks of honor, and elite quests on Argus for possible
Army of the Light rep. It may not save much time, but makes
the whole thing a lot less frustrating, especially with BfA coming
up.
I also finally got the paragon toy for the wardens, the warden
disguise cloak. So now all that's left is a mount and toy from Army
of the Light, and the Highmountain mount. One less emissary I have
to bother with
And I'll end my report with saying I went back to transmog hunting
in old instances/raids, for the first time in a long while, going
back to the BC raids I was already going through. Picked up a few
new items, which is always nice. I'll only do this until BfA comes
out, though, at which point leveling and questing through the new
expansion will be a higher priority. But I aim to get back at it
when things slow down again
And that's my report for the week!
Oh, no, wait, small Starcraft II mission: Played one training game
to get the new portrait  Haven't missed an anniversary
portrait yet!
*mention, not mission
And that's my report, I think!
