Before-meeting

ArPharazonV: Aiya all, let the record show it's meeting time :-)
ArPharazonV: Since I'll probably toss the whole day in the transcript.
VardaValar1: Thank you.
VardaValar1: I can't invite Iryenth/Gilraen because it says a session already exists with her, which it doesn't
AriehnV: odd
LizMarr has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Maybe because the computer has been on for days, heh
VardaValar1: Aiya!
LizMarr: Aiya, I remembered finally
VardaValar1: Huzzah!
AriehnV: aiya there :-)
VardaValar1: Glad you could make it, Ioreth :-)
VardaValar1: If anyone is in-game, feel free to mention the meeting is starting. They don't have to come, but it's nice to mention.
LizMarr: Lol Varda - "Online: 7d 1h 30m"
VardaValar1: Neat. Where do you see that?
VardaValar1: Reason they call it a marathon
VardaValar1: ah there it is
ArPharazonV: I just left the game ;-)
VardaValar1: Nobody for you to call in there, I don't think, anyway.
Iryenth has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: Oh yeah, I can see it too, if you mouseover the name in your buddylist.
VardaValar1: yay, Gilraen made it. :-)
VardaValar1: If anyone sees someone I missed inviting, the name may not be on my list. Feel free to invite.
ArPharazonV: Indis?
VardaValar1: No group chat. She may be at the hospital
ArPharazonV: Ah.
VardaValar1: I said hi, at least.
VardaValar1: Hi to Gwaihir from us, Gilraen. :-)
top

VardaValar1: Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!
VardaValar1: Membership:
VardaValar1: Congratulations to you all for helping out with our annual chat marathon!
VardaValar1: You are very much appreciated, by me at least. : )
VardaValar1: Takes a special effort, and some of you have been on a lot!
VardaValar1: This is the last day of the marathon, so you may all take a breath after the meeting.
VardaValar1: Indis has been undergoing chemotherapy, so please think good wishes, or prayers, or whatever your system may be, for it to work out well for her.
VardaValar1: We trust Bruce is showing signs of mending, Arien?

VardaValar1: Web:
VardaValar1: Eonwe has been working on the Games Site, clearing off all old information and putting up what has been emailed to him.
VardaValar1: Please check to make sure your info is correct. Here's the url:
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/gaming

VardaValar1: He compiled the State of Valar Gaming, showing our stats from the Games Site, the best he can with what was sent.
VardaValar1: Since I just now opened the email with that report, it's not online yet. *cough* [Note: State of Valar Gaming 2013 link]
ArPharazonV: I'll ehrm.. notify him of my playing WoW too.
VardaValar1: But I can (a) copy paste it here for you now, or (b) let you read it later when I put it up, probably tomorrow. Please vote for (a) or (b) now.
VardaValar1: That is, type the letter.
ArPharazonV: When you put up the stats, add 1 for WoW ;-)
VardaValar1: I can't do that on my own. He puts it on the program, then mails the program to me to upload.
VardaValar1: If I mess with it, then it throws off the synchronization.
ArPharazonV: Ah.
ArPharazonV: I'll make a quick late email then.
VardaValar1: Any votes a or be?
VardaValar1: Thanks, that would be great. :-)
ArPharazonV: (b) works for me
VardaValar1: If you're the only one casting a vote, you get your wish. : )
VardaValar1: The rest may be afk.
VardaValar1: Gaming or away.
ArPharazonV: Less reason to put it here :-)

VardaValar1: New Hobbit trailer out:
VardaValar1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbOEknbi4gQ
VardaValar1: for the upcoming Hobbit movie number two. *pitches tent in front of the theater*

VardaValar1: For the anniversary, we have two forum threads and an Anniversary page where all anniversary stuff may be found together.
LizMarr: aw legolis
ArPharazonV: Email sent.
VardaValar1: Aye, he's ba-ack. :-)
ArPharazonV: He's back, with a love interest. It still feels out of place.
VardaValar1: Here is the forum thread to wish the whole gang happy anniversary from you:
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=mggeneral&action=displ ay&thread=1332&page=1#1380895466
VardaValar1: He does not actually have a romance, we've been told. She's more of someone he grew up with.
VardaValar1: Kili seems to have a thing for
VardaValar1: Tauriel maybe. : )
VardaValar1: But as the actor said, she's 20 feet tall to his 2 feet tall. Slight exaggeration.

LizMarr: how do I turn off the message sound on this thing? [Note: settings on AIM]

VardaValar1: Here's the other forum thread where we're telling about how Tolkien used light and darkness in his books, referring to *any* of his books.

ArPharazonV: So the trailer is misleading? It's not actually about Legolas?
VardaValar1: heh
LizMarr: dunno, perhaps abotu that red-haired elf
VardaValar1: They try to emphasize different races in different trailers so they don't all look the same.
VardaValar1: There are red-haired elves in canon.
VardaValar1: Nerdanel for one.
VardaValar1: They tried to show us at least one silvan elf character, as we meet so few in the book but they're all over the place, and are hard to miss in a visual medium.
VardaValar1: From the pictures, I'd guess silvans have slightly longer ears. They really should be a tad shorter than Sindar, and definitely shorter than Noldor.
ArPharazonV: It just seems rather odd that they appear to emphasize a certain romantic shipping in the trailer and then have it actually be about someone else in the actual movie.
ArPharazonV: I bet they were laughing when they thought that one up.
VardaValar1: It's not that big a part of the trailer, really. And it says in the trailer: Thranduil tells Tauriel not to give Legolas hope where there is none.
ArPharazonV: So it *is* about Legolas.
LizMarr: hard to believe it isn't their hair
VardaValar1: In LotR, they used hair from Russian ladies after finding out how badly they needed the money. Real hair.
ArPharazonV: Wigs of real human hair does seem to be popular.
LizMarr: the best is usually real
ArPharazonV: *do
VardaValar1: It helps to use real hair in movies because of the extreme resolution, and using giant Imax theaters that see every pore.
ArPharazonV: Really.... but they tend to edit tattoos etc, no?
ArPharazonV: If I recall, Legolas now has a tattoo remembering the Lotr movies :-)
VardaValar1: They cover tatoos with make-up, generally.
VardaValar1: Aye, apparently it went in the area of the vambrace.
ArPharazonV: *blinks*
ArPharazonV: *looks up vambrace*
VardaValar1: All of the Fellowship members got the tatoo, in different places. I believe it was the elvish number nine.
ArPharazonV: Ah, bracers.
LizMarr: for real?
VardaValar1: Vambrace is over the wrist, protection from the bowstring.
VardaValar1: For real, yes.
VardaValar1: In most pictures of the actor, he has something wrapped around one wrist, possibly hiding the secret tattoo
VardaValar1: It was intended to be between them, but it's hard to keep anything like that secret from us nosey fans.

VardaValar1: In other Web news, we have an Anniversary page up, which will continue to be updated all through October as new screenies and Tolkien Site contributions, etc come in.
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/NewsArchives/extras/2013/anniv16th/anniv16th.htm

LizMarr: the writst itself doesn't have much tatoo'able territory because of the structure. I would think more lower forearm inside or back.
ArPharazonV: Brb a few minutes, so don't end gaming without me.
VardaValar1: Aye, trying to find a fast way to say it, sorry.
LizMarr: hard to tatoo over bones, and if you are being historical, those early methods were not pleasant
VardaValar1: Yes, on the forearm on the meat area. Not on the bone or hand.
VardaValar1: It's not big, either.
VardaValar1: Not on the thin skin side.
LizMarr: the string would go agains the left arm, even left handed folks learned to shoot right handed so that they could pick up any bow to use (believe it or not, many good crafted bows have a slight curve for the arrow path or so I have read)

VardaValar1: We have one new item for the Tolkien Site for the anniversary, a poem:
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/poetry/LightandDark.htm

VardaValar1: I wear a simple leather vambrace when doing archery. It goes over the thin skin side, with straps over the meatier top.
ArPharazonV: back :-)
VardaValar1: Aiyata :-)
VardaValar1: I hope you enjoy the poem. I thought it up while about to fall asleep and wrote it this morning.

LizMarr: I haven't sorted through those fireworks screenies I got, so I just now litterally threw them onto my photo gallery: http://webpaws.net/gallery3/index.php/LOTRO-Screenshots
VardaValar1: New screenies have come in for the LotRO group's firework runs at the capitols for both the noon and 8pm Eastern runs. Some are up, and quite a few others should be up tomorrow or late tonight.
VardaValar1: Thank you for doing that. : )
VardaValar1: Wow, lots of nice photos, and not just anniversary. You don't mind us seeing the others?
VardaValar1: Will those screenies remain there? I can link to that as well as pick some just for the page?
LizMarr: really? I though I grabbed the ones with Friday date. I guess I can chuck my whole folder on there.
LizMarr: And yes. I host my own web sites, there is no reason to take them down in any hurry
VardaValar1: Now I'm just seeing the LotR screenies. Earlier saw someone on a real horse.
LizMarr: ah, hum, you sure it wasn't a high res LOTRO?
LizMarr: there are other folders with horses and such - racing and cattle round up
VardaValar1: I may have hit one of those - was going fast.
VardaValar1: Butterfly looks great, straight on shot of a German Shepherd. :-)
LizMarr: I didn't even notice the NPC speaking
VardaValar1: ok, I'll stop looking
LizMarr: That should be a Belgian Tervuren
VardaValar1: ok
LizMarr: or perhaps a Belgian Malinois
VardaValar1: A...dog. :-)
LizMarr: Belgin Malinois are big with the military, police, and border patrol. You probably see any of those upon occaision. The military dog training is at Hood I believe
VardaValar1: Fort Hood? : )
LizMarr: I think that is the one, so many around San Antonio.
VardaValar1: I was born on an army base at San Antonio, but... back to business...
top

VardaValar1: Gaming:
VardaValar1: What non-WoW, non-LotRO games did folks play this last week? Phar, you had something?
ArPharazonV: Yup.
ArPharazonV: Well, I did my usual flashgames, usually the daily badges for Kongregate etc, but this week some people in WoW showed me another browsergame, which can be quite addictive if you like this sort of thing.
VardaValar1: Lots of your transcript readers do. : )
ArPharazonV: It's an idle game, which means you can leave it running as you do other things, but also click stuff to upgrade and buy and occasionally help things along, with a rather interesting theme...
ArPharazonV: Cookies.
ArPharazonV: http://orteil.dashnet.org/cookieclicker/ a simple webpage, where the goal is to get all the upgrades and achievements and to get your cookie production as high as you want or need for that :-) It's also under constant development, with new features added regularly.
ArPharazonV: I believe a "dungeon" feature will be added soon, adding what seems to be a whole new mechanic.
ArPharazonV: So have fun with it!
VardaValar1: Good to hear they keep adding new goodies to it. Makes it even more interesting.

VardaValar1: Forgive me, but backing up to Membership,
VardaValar1: We got a letter from the original Founder of the Valar Guild, Eru-(Valar).
VardaValar1: It's on the Anniversary page. :-)
VardaValar1: It's not long. Here it is as a direct link:
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/NewsArchives/extras/2013/anniv16th/anniv16th.htm#Eru

VardaValar1: Ok, back to Gaming
VardaValar1: Other non-WoW, non-LotRO gaming?
VardaValar1: StarCraft/BroodWar with Fangorn and me.

ArPharazonV: Good to know Eru's still thinking of us :-) Is he still officially a member?
VardaValar1: Yes.
VardaValar1: He responds to the membership letters.
ArPharazonV: Ah, great.
VardaValar1: :-)
ArPharazonV: Leaving the governing of the guild to his Valar, eh? ;-)
VardaValar1: Aye. Kind of like the real Eru.

ArPharazonV: I've been preparing for a dabble in a browser mmo based on Game of Thrones, but I figured I should catch up on the tv show before I try that. Just to know the story a bit. So that's part of what I've been doing this week. Maybe not strictly gaming, but pre-gaming activity ;-)

VardaValar1: Star Wars The Old Republic, a few of us have been playing there. Bilbo plays a lot. [Note: Gimli-(V) joined our guild branches on The Ebon Hawk after the meeting.]

VardaValar1: Maybe read the books? That should take a long chunk of time!
ArPharazonV: Hah, I thought about it. But I've been reading a lot of wiki stuff on it already, and I believe the mmo is based on the tv show. So it should be fine.

VardaValar1: I play some, mostly with Bilbo. Sauron, Menelvagor, Arien come on some.

VardaValar1: Diablo 3 still has folks gaming. Thingol lives there, Bilbo plays. I've been on a little bit.
VardaValar1: Eowyn plays it too.
ArPharazonV: All planning on getting the expansion?
VardaValar1: Considering it.
LizMarr: when I can afford it.
AriehnV: maybe yes .. there seems also be an expansion for DragonAge on the way which sounds promising
VardaValar1: Aye, may be later. The LotRO expansions are expensive and I'd get that first.
VardaValar1: I hate to mention that I'm running out of time.
ArPharazonV: True. MMO expansions do feel more.. urgent, that way.
ArPharazonV: Ah.

VardaValar1: WoW news:
VardaValar1: The WoW group did their anniversary run on October 2 instead of 4th so that Eonwe could be there.
LizMarr: I missed it
VardaValar1: We had Eowyn, Eonwe, Elwing, Bofur, and Varda.
VardaValar1: We have a few shots on the Anniversary page, but the main ones from Eonwe will be coming in later.
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/NewsArchives/extras/2013/anniv16th/anniv16th.htm#WoW_firework_screenies
VardaValar1: We also tried to get light effect shots from various games. WoW and LotRO are the only ones currently showiing, but feel free to show some from other games that you enjoy.

VardaValar1: LotRO had two times for the capitol runs with fireworks on October 4th, some screenies are up for that.
VardaValar1: Many more incoming. :-)
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/NewsArchives/extras/2013/anniv16th/anniv16th.htm#LotRO_fireworks

VardaValar1: Thank you all for helping us have a wonderful anniversary. :-)
LizMarr: I've never been in a kin before that had anniversaries
VardaValar1: We will continue all through October taking more items for the Anniversary page. These are also put in the main site wherever they fit.
VardaValar1: We're more than a single game or several games. We're also a Tolkien fan club.
VardaValar1: We're a Tolkien fan club and gamers' group. We're a guild because we actually make things for the international community of Tolkien fans to enjoy.
VardaValar1: We were one of the resources for the LotR movies.
VardaValar1: But we couldn't get guild interest to help much for the Hobbit movies, so we were not one for that.
VardaValar1: That's the breaks. : )
LizMarr: I missed that, but I'm a bit of a novie anyway
VardaValar1: Anyone can dig out the books and start looking up information from original resources, put it together. We're all literate and can make a decent article. Plus, I help out with presentation where needed.
VardaValar1: Our main focus used to be articles.
VardaValar1: Somehow it shifted to stories, mostly, and we haven't really moved back to our roots again very well. And then the stories fell off. But the new movies may help wake us up again. :-)
VardaValar1: Mostly we've always been a book fan club. The movies almost felt like a distraction.

AriehnV: those pics do look awesome
VardaValar1: Sorry, Arien, which pics?
AriehnV: the anniversary ones
AriehnV: from the fireworks
VardaValar1: Screenies? Cool. :-)
LizMarr: I haven't see the first Hobbit, I figure I'll just wait until they are all out. I'm not much one for going places
karakedi25 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: I'm going to have to leave
karakedi25: aiya
VardaValar1: But first, aiya Indis!
top

VardaValar1: After-meeting.
ArPharazonV: Haven't seen the first Hobbit either, thought I'd wait for the extended edition dvd.
ArPharazonV: Won't be long now.
VardaValar1: Please feel free to chat as much as you like anyway. : )
VardaValar1: I went to the first Hobbit movie as fast as I could get a ticket. :-)
karakedi25: sorry about being so late. My warden reached 75, so I was fussing with new weapons etc
VardaValar1: Beautiful images.
LizMarr: lol
ArPharazonV: As for articles and stories, I'm not much of a writer. Not as I used to be when I was rather younger :-) As for reading? Not as much as I'd like. Can't seem to be able to stare more than a few minutes at a book before feeling tired. It's rather depressing sometimes.
VardaValar1: Happy end of the chat marathon and welcome to After-meeting for those that wish to stay on.
LizMarr: I can fuss for hours with OLD weapons
VardaValar1: Maybe you need to check into glasses.
karakedi25: oh darn, I missed the chat marathon :-(
VardaValar1: It was a week long, but we can do after-chat-marathon-chat. : )
ArPharazonV: No, it's not that. I can see them fine. But I find the stories hard to get into my head, to grasp the details. To translate the words into images in my mind.
LizMarr: I use those grocery store ones. I really can't see to read any more. I have a large-text copy of my book that I am using to proof and revise with
ArPharazonV: Don't know what it is. Maybe I just have more on my mind.
LizMarr: 1) Not enough sleep, 2) Too much gaming, 3) Bad diet, 4) Worrying... etc etc
VardaValar1: That's strange. I see movies in my head when reading nearly anything, even soup can labels. (Chemistry minor)
VardaValar1: What she said.
LizMarr: Or for me, All of the above
LizMarr: I forgot old age...
ArPharazonV: Heh. Possibly. But I'm not sure what of that changed in the past few years :-)
LizMarr: Old age...
ArPharazonV: Old age? I'm 28.
LizMarr: ok younger old age
karakedi25: *smiles at all you kids*
VardaValar1: Where's Melkor when we need him? : )
VardaValar1: He usually does the smile at us little 59 year olds. :-)
karakedi25: he/'
karakedi25: he's the only one who beats me
ArPharazonV: Possibly I just have more trouble imagining things than I used to.
LizMarr: not often gamers are older than me, especially gals
ArPharazonV: But I still try, and that's tiring :-)
LizMarr: write a book. I loved developing my book and putting things together for my next ones
VardaValar1: Ok, I really have to go, but will come back and scroll to see what was said, and toss in comments. :-)
AriehnV: ripe old age of 43 .. nofd ..
karakedi25: see you later, Varda
AriehnV: nods even
VardaValar1: Sounds good!
ArPharazonV: Have fun, Varda!
VardaValar1: Thanks!
ArPharazonV: Anyway, the point I was making was that I haven't read up on Tolkien in some time.
ArPharazonV: My bookmark for the Lotr reread is still somewhere in the barrow-downs.
ArPharazonV: Lost in a tomb perhaps?
ArPharazonV: So not really up for making any articles.
LizMarr: I use my iPod and download the book, this I dial up the text size. It is so much easier. I would love to have a kindle
ArPharazonV: I knew someone with an e-reader of sorts. But a bit too bright for me. I can handle chatrooms like this, but an actual book?
LizMarr: Kindle can have tan background, that is what I use
LizMarr: Like old parchment
ArPharazonV: That's not bad. But it's not lighted?
LizMarr has left the room.
LizMarr has entered the room.
LizMarr: That was pretty good, I went nearly the whole time without pushing ESC
ArPharazonV: You didn't miss anything.
LizMarr: Anyway, yes, it is lite BUT you control that
LizMarr: *lit
LizMarr: you can download a PC version of Kindle reader from Amazon (free) and then if you look around you can find one of the Tolkien books for free, I can't remember if it is LOTR or Hobbit
karakedi25: I think I found a free Silmarillion somewhere--maybe Amazon?
LizMarr: could be, but with all of those Tolkien sites out there, you can find a lot of neat things
ArPharazonV: Text size doesn't help though, just makes me sit further away.
ArPharazonV: It's not in my eyes :-)
LizMarr: as for Amazon, you can do a search for free books and there is a bunch.
LizMarr: with me I couldn't read text without my glaces and my eyes were so happy with the kindle, I couldn't believe it
LizMarr: I just wissed through Hobbit
LizMarr: Of course those cognacs before bedtime reading can make people sleepy
ArPharazonV: Glad it works for some :-)
ArPharazonV: And I don't drink.
LizMarr: nor I, rarely. I to like tasting the local wine but I never finish the glass
LizMarr: OK, I'm going to take a nap before I go shooting tonight. I hope I have better luck with the sunset then I did last night when my camera misbehaved
ArPharazonV: Ah, that kind of shooting.
ArPharazonV: Have fun :-)
AriehnV: ok quick restart of the computer
LizMarr: Ammo is too expensive for the other. I think I have about 20 rounds for my pistol
AriehnV: and yes have fun Liz but .. dont fall off a cliff while taking picture ;-)
LizMarr has left the room.
AriehnV has left the room.
nerdanel47 has entered the room.
nerdanel47: aiya
ArPharazonV: Aiya
nerdanel47: so... turns out a loremaster can solo those big Nemesis level spiders in the Limlight Gorge...
nerdanel47: how has your day been Phar?
ArPharazonV: Oh, sorry, was busy in WoW. Pretty good, though a bit behind on my browsing ;-) will catch up during the week
nerdanel47: well that's fun
ArPharazonV: And your day?
nerdanel47: um... let me think
nerdanel47: been busy in LoTRO
nerdanel47: i got a war-steed for my main last night, finally
ArPharazonV: oh, grats!
ArPharazonV: That unlocks rather more stuff, right?
nerdanel47: and then i did some quests, and one thing leads to another...
ArPharazonV: Next thing you know it's morning?
nerdanel47: yeah, that about sums it up
nerdanel47: tomorrow, i'm going to be spending all day drawing, but today is questing
ArPharazonV: Heh.
ArPharazonV: Doing the.. what was it... cups next?
nerdanel47: yes. cups and then swords
nerdanel47: i'm going to try to finish the scratchwork for both in the next two days
ArPharazonV: Not an artist myself, so not sure what that means :-)
nerdanel47: the sketches
ArPharazonV: Ah, makes sense.
ArPharazonV: Do you have a design of the backside yet?
ArPharazonV: If they're actual cards.
nerdanel47: yes, i made that design first
Iryenth has left the room.
nerdanel47: and before you ask, it's never been uploaded onto the internet
ArPharazonV: Was gonna say it makes sense, if you've already displayed them at cons and the like.
nerdanel47: except for that one picture of the deck spread on the table
ArPharazonV: Right. I'll go check that out :-)
nerdanel47: not really displayed them, but i take them with me
ArPharazonV: Ah, clouds and stars, from what I can tell.
nerdanel47: yes. sorta
nerdanel47: i basically borrowed the rooftop of Canterlot castle
ArPharazonV: Ah.
nerdanel47: sorry, that's misleading.
nerdanel47: i looked at Canterlot castle. took the good bits and rearranged everything.
nerdanel47: like a... architectural casserole
nerdanel47 has left the room.
ArPharazonV: saving and sending transcript
ArPharazon-V (8:30:18 PM):    saved
ArPharazon-V (8:35:27 PM):    and sent
ArPharazon-V (8:35:28 PM):    Namarie
VardaValar1 (9:28:42 PM):    hehe - architectural casserole. Great!
VardaValar1 (11:39:33 PM):    Gimli finally got set up with AIM, tad late for the marathon, and joined the guild's Empire and Republic branches in SWTOR
VardaValar1 (11:44:38 PM):    Bilbo and Gimli are still playing SWTOR. I'm going to turn off my computer for the first time this week. Hear it go *whew*!
