I took my friend Susan to Golden, Colorado earlier today...the
weather was beautiful, so we walked up Clear Creek a ways from
Golden, to watch the inner tubers on Clear Creek. I even soaked my
feet in the waters that make Coors Beer! Delightful. Now we are in
the midst of a late afternoon thunderstorm!

Last, but not least...
[4:27 PM]
It's September, which means it's time for the GSMU.
If all goes as I expect it to, the email will go out this week. Once
that's sent, responses can start coming in. This is your pre-email
reminder the deadline to respond is September 30th.
[4:28 PM]
That's it from me.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
Thank you, Eonwe. That is a lot of work!
[4:28 PM]
If any of you gamers don't get his letter, feel free to email him
anyway, maybe use Discord.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:29 PM
And make sure your e-mail is up-to-date with Varda.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:32 PM
Let me know if it is your outer face email or confidential. Is it
postable to the Membership page.
[4:32 PM]
Also, should we simply drop emails from the Membership page?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:33 PM
I think it could be useful in contacting people for stuff, whether
it's gaming or Tolkien knowledge or an art question...
[4:33 PM]
But if people don't want to have it displayed that's up to them.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
Very few have said it's confidential. People often make a special
one just for gaming stuff like this, not their work or even maybe
family email.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:36 PM
We don't send out a whole lot of e-mails to the whole membership.
The GSMU is about it, and when Varda conducts a sweep of inactive
members you might get one so we can figure out if you're still
around. If we don't have an e-mail, you don't show up in games,
don't post to the forum, and don't respond on whatever messaging app
we are using at the time (we've gone through three in 25 years, and
that always causes some people problems along the way) then we
really have no way to reach you.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:37 PM
The inactive member sweep pretty well stopped, because it was so
difficult to reach folks in all the scattered games.
[4:37 PM]
If someone says they want out, that's when they are swept now.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:37 PM
Just out of curiousity, how many members does the Guild have?
Varda — Yesterday at 4:37 PM
See Membership page. : )
[4:38 PM]
https://valarguild.org/community/members.htm
We used to operate at about 100.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:38 PM
Ah. Will do. I do know that my friends are VERY impressed when I
tell them that the Valar Guild has members all over the world...sort
of.
@Varda
If someone says they want out, that's when they are swept
now.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:39 PM
Or if someone wants in and a person with the name they want has been
inactive for a long period of time.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
The older member may receive a mail then, asking if they want to
continue. Otherwise the name goes to the new person, and the old one
can choose another if he/she returns.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
I guess that means we have a maximum membership amount
Varda — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
We no longer have a max or minimum, as long as there are one or two
of us. : )
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
Only so many names!
Varda — Yesterday at 4:41 PM
Some names are very popular. Others, not so much.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:41 PM
The official count of Full Members sits at 162 per last year's GSMU.
That does not mean they are all active.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:41 PM
Also, Maiar and Valar names are only after being Full Members and
earning them.
Thank you, Eonwe. : )
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
Active typically sits between 1/5 and 1/3 of that. Responding to the
GSMU counts as activity. So really, we make it as easy as possible
to let us know you're still around.
[4:44 PM]
We can't quite yet read minds, so we have to rely on you letting us
know through other means, heh.

All characters had a stat squish, and other changes in stats, so
characters need to look back over traits and LI builds to see if
they are as desired.

addressed in the next week's tweak update.

Does Auros ever sleep? : )
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:00 PM

RP?
Reading Public?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:00 PM
Ah yes, one of those "next episode" questions that gets answered in
the first 3 seconds of the episode.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:00 PM
Short for Role-Play, our group story on the Forum.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:01 PM
Ah.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:01 PM
Yikes! That is a scary one. Houseless, I wonder?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:01 PM
Banshee, obviously.
[5:01 PM]
;)
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:01 PM
Both very good answers.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:02 PM
Ok, trying not to talk about it too much. Spoilers?
Interested to see how that is going to fit into our tale.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Maybe we can stuff it in the ring and let both spirits keep each
other occupied.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
We started the RP role-play story, while waiting for Middle-earth
Online to come online. It took years and then came out as Lord of
the Rings Online. But we never stopped the story that was our take
on Middle-earth Online.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Maybe promises were made.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:04 PM
And the promise may need kept in some fashion?
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:04 PM
But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and
miles to go before I sleep.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:04 PM
Hard to believe it precedes my WoW versions of my characters.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:04 PM
Aye, Phar. It does. : )
We also played WoW while waiting for MeO. Took too long.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:05 PM
I'm actually going to be heading out shortly as well. I have to run
an errand to a place that closes in not too long, so I can only stay
to chat a few more minutes.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:05 PM
Sandalf, that could indeed be interpreted in a ghostly fashion, that
poem. : )
A quick chat topic then.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:05 PM
It was sort of ghostly....Robert Frost was meditating on his own
future as he stopped by the woods on a snowy evening...read it the
first time in 5th Grade. He was a great poet.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:05 PM
What kept those of Valinor, especially the Valar, from coming to
stop evil in Middle-earth. What were they waiting for?
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:06 PM
In a word: humility?
Picard to admit he needed Q to save him from the Borg?
Varda — Yesterday at 5:06 PM
They had to stop Morgoth, but were waiting for something.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:06 PM
They feared, rightfully, that their coming and the subsequent war
would do great damage to Middle-Earth. Which is why they didn't like
to go in before the Awakening, at least.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:07 PM
I was not clear which evil, pardon. Morgoth.
[5:07 PM]
True, Phar. Yet they did come again.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:07 PM
I think that you are on it, Eonwe. I think that after so many
botched opportunities and events, the Valar finally realized that
even the smallest acdtions have consequences unforeseen at the their
initiation. They could only do so much, with messing more stuff up.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:07 PM
yep, and most of the land sank for it
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
Aha, we're not just talking about the Noldor vs Morgoth then.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
This question refers to an actual happening that the Valar were
waiting for, before they took Morgoth out of Arda.
[5:08 PM]
Once it happened, they came in their War of Wrath.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:09 PM
Tney had to find an emissary who spoke on behalf of both Elves AND
Men at the same time...but what about the Dwarves?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:10 PM
A unification of the many houses of elves and men, at strife with
each other for much of the first War. Culminating in a half-elf
couple. Someone able to represent all of them, find their way
through all odds and ask for help directly.

Eärendil was the perfect messenger...and he showed up with
ELwing...another perfect messenger.

They only needed Elves and Men. Dwarves were... adopted. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:19 PM
Gotta say, was a bit worried about reaching level 51 in Diablo 4,
since most mobs on tier 2 difficulty don't scale higher than 50
(which means I don't get better gear), but strongholds are always 3
levels higher, and they're showing as 53 on the map now. But just
found out that the actual mobs don't scale above 52, no doubt
because of the difficulty tier. So leveling actually gives a slight
advantage
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:52 PM
Eep, nevermind. Some are 53. Good thing I don't have many
strongholds remaining.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:04 PM
Aiya!
Eeeeep!
[8:05 PM]
So how does it feel to be an uncle-in-waiting?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:05 PM
Bit odd. Happy for my brother, of course. I wonder how I'll get
along with the sprout.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:06 PM
Little humans are so much fun. It is just interesting to sit back
and watch them. You will no doubt have ample opportunity to hold the
little one on your lap...and you will be amazed how quickly you will
bond with the child. Children are evolutionarily designed to be
pleasing to adult humans....the ugly ones didn't survive!
[8:07 PM]
I speak as a father annd a grandfather!
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:08 PM
Maybe. But I'm just not a kid person. When other people like to see
baby pictures or watch toddlers or something, I just... don't care.
I'm sure it'll be different with a relative, but I won't get my
hopes up too much.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:09 PM
That will change, I think...the real thing is different from a baby
picture. They wriggle, they stare at you, they make noises and
gurgles, and, of course, they poop.
And they smile at you, too,,,,and that makes it ALL worthwhile!
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:10 PM
Hmm... see, all of the above... it just doesn't do much for me. I've
visited friends with babies before.
Just makes me uncomfortable.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:10 PM
OK. Give it time.
[8:12 PM]
I am sorry. Mayhap that will change. I get teary-eyed remembering my
first days as a young father. My children really did grow on me, in
so many ways.
[8:14 PM]
Did you watch a movie over the "break?"
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:19 PM
No, been playing Diablo 4, conquering strongholds. In fact,
my delay in answering that was because I was fighting possibly the
toughest Stronghold boss of the night
Lot of movement, lot of monsters adding, lot of health on the boss.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:20 PM
Did you survive?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:20 PM
Yes, thankfully! I did not want to start that all over again
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:20 PM
Good!
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:21 PM
That was my fourth stronghold of the night, now have 14 out of 15
completed. They take a while, but almost done
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:22 PM
My old friend Susan Laws is visiting from Lincoln. About 25 years
ago, she was a student in one of my geology classes, and we began a
friendship (only) at that point. We have stayed in contact over the
years, and she is still a member of the Saturday night dining group
that I put together about 7 years ago, and I think that I have
mentioned to you before.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:22 PM
Indeed you have
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:22 PM
Sorry! I do not want to distract you from your Stronghold. Keep up
the good work!
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:23 PM
Nah, it's fine, the fighting is over
[8:24 PM]
Each stronghold is a large-ish base/camp/fortress with many enemies
and a story to go through, as you investigate the place. Some things
to set right, some ghosts to help out, a boss to defeat... and
ultimately claim the stronghold for points and, in some cases, a new
friendly camp.
They all have their own themes as well, and this one's possibly the
most unique, surrounding a lighthouse all the way on the most
northern shore of the continent. Just gotta light it up and we're
done
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:25 PM
Good luck. Once you have accomplished your task, what then?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:25 PM
Beautiful view, too.
[8:26 PM]
Well, strongholds are a type of bonus objectives for each of the 5
regions in the game. There's also areas and dungeons to explore and
quests to complete. With enough points from the bonus objectives in
each region, you get a permanent bonus for all characters on your
account. That's what I'm working on
After the strongholds are done I think I'll start focusing on
optional quests.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:26 PM
Wnich game is this?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:27 PM
But there's about 30 in each region so that'll take a while
Diablo 4.
About 40, even.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:27 PM
Are all the games that Eonwe mentions, or you or Varda describe,
Tolkien-related?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:28 PM
Hmm, some, kinda. World of Warcraft, the entire Warcraft franchise
in general, takes heavy inspiration from Tolkien, with elves,
dwarves, orcs etc.
But the Diablo series - though made by the same company - is more
about heaven vs hell, angels and demons invading the world.
[8:29 PM]
It's also rather darker and more bloody in nature.
[8:31 PM]
But it's all medieval fantasy, in the end.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:31 PM
Ah. BTW, my local library offers a service called "Hoopla," where
you can download movies (for three days) and books or comics for 21
days. You can view//read them on your laptop or phone. I just
watched an excellent movie entitled "The Story of J.R.R.
Tolkien - Master of the Rings." They interview all sorts of various
and sundry people, and include lots of rarely seen pictures of
Tolkien, etc. It was well worth warching. Have you seen it?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:32 PM
I have not. But it might be worth looking into. It'd have to be on
the desktop computer though
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:32 PM
That would work. I will look into the movie a little bit online, and
send you some additional information. How is your job search going?

The one review said that the movie did not present too much info
that Tolkien fans would not already know, but it is still worth a
look. I agree with that assessment. Some of the images from WWI are
really neat.
Or as neat as one can get, dealing with life and death in the
trenches.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:37 PM
Are you familiar with the three great WWI poems that my Mother read
to me as a child? She was an English teacher, of course.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:38 PM
I don't think so.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:40 PM
"I have a rendevous with Death, When SPring comes back with rustling
shade, and I to my pledged word am true, I shall not fail that
rendevous." From the poem by the young American Alan Seeger
(actually related to the folk singer Pete Seeger) who did, in fact,
die only several weeks after writing that poem. The line above
always stirs my emotions in lots of ways. I hope that I keep my
rendevous with equal equanimity.
One of the other poems is "In Flanders Fields."
[8:41 PM]
The third poem is "The Solider," by Rupert Brooke. He too died in
the war after writing his poem.

Diablo 4:
Lots of working on Renown, mainly through Strongholds Got
Hawezar to renown level 2, unlocking my final health potion slot, so
now I can carry a maximum of 9 potions. Definitely helps
[8:54 PM]
Instead of working on getting each region to 3, though, I decided to
focus on each type of objective instead, starting with the
Strongholds, since I'd quite like to get them done before moving to
difficulty tier 3. So after completing the strongholds in Hawezar, I
also finished the ones in Fractured Peaks and Scosglen. Just one to
go in the Dry Steppes, and all 15 will be done!
[8:56 PM]
After that I'll grab the last few remaining waypoints, and then try
out the "Capstone dungeon" which will allow me to move up the
difficulty. While I'm not thrilled about extra difficulty, you do
require tier 3 to get monsters - and thus, levels - over 50 up to
100, and you can loot some more powerful types of gear. So I hope
it'll be worth it But most importantly, you need to unlock
tier 3 to access the last 2 levels of renown in each region, for
more permanent bonuses!
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:57 PM
Wow! I played "Boo..." The music is great, i can play the piece on
my piano...Danse Macabre, by Camille Saint-Saens.
He even throws in the Dies Irae!
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:57 PM
I have been getting some experience, though, as it's not heavily
slowed down yet. Got to level 51.25, getting a few more paragon
points, which I can use for paragon bonuses, such as more stats.
Hah, I should've known you'd recognize the music
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:58 PM
He he.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:59 PM
Oh, and I got the Barreling title prefix from getting a stronghold
in each region, so now my title for the druid is Barreling Bear. I
love it Beware the barreling bear, he'll barrel right through
you!
[9:02 PM]
Hearthstone:
Level 57 on the reward track. It's slowing down a bit again.
New quest event coming in 2 days, the Battle of Ahn'Qiraj, related
to the new Caverns of Time wild set.
[9:04 PM]
I have opened a bunch more packs, down to 230 remaining.. and got 2
new legendaries, Cannonmaster Smythe, and the warlock Titan,
Sargeras himself! He looks to be quite a powerful card, but at 9
mana cost, it'll be a while before you can get him played
[9:06 PM]
Tavern brawl is The Void Singularity: At the end of each turn, all
your minions become crushed into the form of one void entity, with
all attack and health stats added up. I did quite well with a
deathrattle deck, since the minions die when that happens, and you
get the effects for free, including some powerful summons, which
themselves will then join the singularity at the end of next turn.
Can become powerful quite fast!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:07 PM
As expected, raiding's slowing down, though people being on vacation
or doing other summery stuff doesn't help But that's ok, we
can really do just fine with 1 night a week right now.
[9:09 PM]
I did get all my raidgear maxed out using aspects' crests from the
megadungeon, so now all my guardian and feral gear is at 441. And if
you have an item of a type maxed out, subsequent ones of that type
no longer require crests. So when I got a better guardian ring from
the vault this week, it was quickly maxed out as well. In fact, I
don't think I'll be needing any aspects' crests going forward!

Weekly quest is mythic dungeons, which goes pretty well at this
gearlevel. I'm keeping my fourth one for tuesday in case people
still want the megadungeon then, but I'll be okay with just going to
Uldaman instead.
[9:12 PM]
Got a few transmog items too! Finished up the draenic seed gathering
in the garrison, getting my last garden tool transmog, the Garden
Hoe. So no need to collect more seeds from here on
And I bought the corsage pack from the store, applying the wrist
corsages to an alt or 2. Though my main goal there was the 200
trading post tender which should come in handy in september,
according to my calculations.
