Pilgrim's Bounty going in WoW. Good time to get your cooking
levelled up easily. Also a chance for people who chose Night Fae in
Shadowlands to turn into a spirit turkey.

Does Haggis and Black Peppercorn count as a weird flavour then too
:D?
Eonwë Valar — 11/21/2023 3:01 PM
I would tend to say haggis is a weird flavor with or without the
black peppercorn :}

Wow, not very big discount for LotRO Gundabad expansion this year.
Sandalf13 — 11/22/2023 8:54 PM
Aiya!
Eonwë Valar — 11/22/2023 9:23 PM
Heya.
November 23, 2023
Eonwë Valar — 11/23/2023 5:13 PM
Happy Thanksgiving to those of us in the USA.
November 24, 2023
Eonwë Valar — 11/24/2023 7:34 PM
There, now my druid is lvl 70.
[7:39 PM]
Hmm, interesting. Looks like the content patch for WoW, when it
updated the gear rewards you get, also updated the gear my Druid had
already obtained bt couldn't wear yet.
The Suffusion Camp gear anyway.
Sandalf13 — 11/24/2023 7:41 PM
Right back at you. Did you have a good dinner yesterday? I am
cooking up some soup with LOTS of turkey in it...have to use up the
leftovers! Cold outside, around 13 Grad F, so it is a good night for
soup and my laptop!
Eonwë Valar — 11/24/2023 7:41 PM
Well, some of it. Other pieces don't seem to have been updated.
It was good enough. Good idea for that turkey. Hope you saved some
to make a turkey sandwich to go with that turkey soup though, heh.
Sandalf13 — 11/24/2023 7:43 PM
I have plenty of turkey for the next few days, so yes, I will be
making a turkey sandwich somewhere along the way...I
am also enjoying my loaf of cranberry-walnut-whole gerain
bread that I bought at Costco on Wednesday. As I sit here, I can see
the snowplows going up and down Quebec Street...a good night to stay
in, I think.
Eonwë Valar — 11/24/2023 8:01 PM
Unless you're having a snowball fight, aye, heh.
Sandalf13 — 11/24/2023 10:12 PM
Very true...but I will wait a couple of days for a snowball fight!
Namarie!
November 26, 2023
Varda — Yesterday at 3:52 PM
Has it been a couple of days yet? looks around for snowball
material
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 3:53 PM
...Snowball material.
So... snow?
[Note: Varda is in an area currently loaded with
flowers and butterflies and honeybees. Snowball material may be mud,
mashed potatoes, styrofoam, or other.]
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 3:59 PM
Yup...we still have about 5 inches of powdery white stuff on the
ground....very cold (for November)...but the Sun is out and shining
brightly...so the snow is melting off the walkways and
streets...about 34 Grad F. BTW -0 AIYA!!!
The storm made it all the way across the Great Plains and
beyond...Lincoln got some snow about a day after we did.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:00 PM
Aiya!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:23 PM
The Eternal Optimism of J.R.R. Tolkien as Revealed by his Concept of
Estel
There you go...
[4:24 PM]
In these dark and troubled times, what could be better than a dose
of Optimism?
Varda — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
So, Hope as the theme? Or optimism?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
makes a completely black picture with a single white dot
Varda — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
There you go. : )
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
There, the view of Sam and Frodo as they see the star in Mordor.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
Both...I see them as flip sides of the same coin!
Varda — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
hmm
[4:25 PM]
Ok, we have a suggestion to toss in the hat. Yay!
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:25 PM
I don't know if Hope and optimism would be on opposite sides of the
same coin. If you have hope you have to have at least a small hint
of optimism.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:25 PM
And vice versa, true?
Varda — Yesterday at 4:26 PM
Maybe simplest would be to call it Estel
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:27 PM
I suppose so, so they'd seem to be on the same side of the coin to
me, then.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
It would be a tricky theme to show in-game, but might be do-able.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:29 PM
I guess that depends on how you interpret the expression....I always
thought it could mean two ideas that spring from the same
source...but with different names. I suppose one could also
interpret it as two things that are opposites. Is that how you view
it, Eonwe?
Just like the word "sanction!"
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:31 PM
Opposite sides of the same coin are usually opposite aspects of the
same thing, I think?
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:31 PM
I'm with you, Ar...
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:32 PM
Well, the dictionary definition is (after a quick google):
"different ways of looking at or dealing with the same situation."
And what Phar said is also a way to understand the expression. Hope
and optimism don't seem to fit either understanding to me.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:32 PM
Maybe we can resolve this semantic dispute by saying "hope and
optimism are cut from the same cloth." How does that sound?
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 4:33 PM
i think it s a bit like treasure and gold
[4:34 PM]
i mean in relationship
Varda — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
Hope can spring when there is no apparent reason for expecting it.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
Like a light from the shadows? cough
Varda — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
This is not a dispute. Just clarifying what theme you are
requesting.
[4:35 PM]
Estel seems to cover it.
and lets us do Aragorn stories. ; )
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
But pardon for the tangent.
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
gold is treasure and a bit like vice versa because gold is part of a
treasure or understood to be . do u understand what i mean?
Varda — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
Gold is a subset of the set of Treasure.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
All squares are rectangle but not all rectangles are square.
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 4:36 PM
I see what you mean
okay maybe not then
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:38 PM
Hope and Optimism though, if you have one it would seem you have the
other. Then again Gandalf said "There was no hope really, only a
fool's hope," and yet he still went forward with the hope that
somehow they would manage to succeed.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:38 PM
I am more than OK with that...
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:38 PM
Optimism is like.. more of a state of mind. You can be optimistic
even if there's nothing to have hope in. Then again, having hope can
make you optimistic.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:39 PM
Amdir versus Estel....see my footnote
#7 in my Chapter
Six.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:40 PM

Tolkien:

Varda — Yesterday at 4:41 PM

Did you have more on this topic as it relates to Tolkien?
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:42 PM
If there are any other suggestions for Themes feel free to
e-mail/whisper them anytime in the next month for consideration.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:42 PM
No...I was just suggesting a theme....
Varda — Yesterday at 4:42 PM
okie dokie. And thanks : )
We are taking a list and that is definitely to be on it. We vote in
December.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
Are we checking it twice?
Varda — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
Yes : )
All of you are good, so no worries!
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
I dragged us on a bit of a tangent so I apologize, but do send in
ideas so we can set a theme early.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:44 PM
Your tangents are always exciting and stimulating! Sometimes going
off on a tangent is the best way to discover new things...get out of
the rut, so to speak.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:44 PM
Aye
Any Tolkien subjects you folks had in mind for today? : )
[4:45 PM]
Fangorn mentioned something for us.
[4:45 PM]
Why did Gandalf show up in the Shire at all? (not just for Bilbo)
and
How did Gandalf know Bilbo and choose him for an "adventure" to
handle the Smaug problem?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
Well, he knew Bilbo came from an adventurous family
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
Hobbits are fun to be around.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
Phar, how did he know?
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
To answer the first question.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
He was familiar with his family at least, not sure if he'd already
met Bilbo himself.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
Second question: he knew Bilbo's mom apparently, and seemed to know
the Old Took.
Treebeard — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
Hello
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
Heya Fangorn.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
Aiya Fangorn : )
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
Aiya Fangorn!
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
Aiya Fangorn!
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
Aiya Fangorn?
[4:48 PM]
I mean without question mark
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
As for why he was in the Shire, it seemed to be a known trade road
for dwarves to travel between the Blue and Misty Mountains. Can't
blame em, nice and peaceful. Was a good place to form a company of
dwarves.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Vacation spot? : )
Place to pick up pipeweed and pipes?
Treebeard — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
Gandalf's fireworks were already legendary weren't they?... when
Bilbo was a youngster, I mean.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:51 PM
I think so, yes.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:51 PM
"To think that I should have lived to be good-morninged by Belladonna Took's
son, as if I was selling buttons at the door!"
Treebeard — Yesterday at 4:51 PM
Ha ha
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:51 PM
Guess we know they had buttons!
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:52 PM
The Shire was renowned for its crop of pipeweed....something the
Dwarves, Istari (at least some of them), and some Men seemed to
enjoy, in addition to the Hobbits. THere is no mention that I know
of of any other places in Middle-earth that suppored pipeweek
cultivation.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:52 PM
The buttons on Bilbo's waistcoat get a mention, and are even in our
LotRO game.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:53 PM
I better include that in my Chapter Four...the geopolitics of
Middle-earth. One can never overestimate the importance of
pipeweed! He he.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:53 PM
Somehow when I think of someone selling buttons at the door, I
picture the kind you pin on your sweater for charity or something.
Not the more functional kind.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:53 PM
Even found in Saruman's Orthanc. : )
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:53 PM
Have to close a shirt/coat somehow, and I don't think they had
zippers just yet, heh.

Treebeard — Yesterday at 4:55 PM
Gandalf evaluated Bilbo, tolerance being questioned, intellect, and
as to being a burglar...aren't all hobbits good at sneaking?
[4:56 PM]
The Fuller Brush man was invited into homes as the provider of high
quality merchandise not available in the day.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:57 PM
There might have been other options... but I suppose he figured
Bilbo was an honest one and he might be able to bring out the
adventurous Took side.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:57 PM
In the more benign context of the word, perhaps Fangorn. They were
able to move quietly at need, or at least quieter than most of those
lumbering Big Folk.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:58 PM
Ever since WoW, I prefer the word "stealthy".
Treebeard — Yesterday at 4:58 PM
Big Folk as in Dwarves.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:58 PM
Big Folk = Man.
Treebeard — Yesterday at 4:58 PM
Definitely good genes, those Tooks.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:58 PM
They were a mite bit bigger than the Hobbits...and probably somewhat
stockier.
Dwarves, that is.
Treebeard — Yesterday at 4:59 PM
A head taller, I think.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:00 PM
And a lot wider. : )
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:00 PM
For bonus points I'll throw this quote out there: "Not that Belladonna Took ever had any adventures
after she became Mrs. Bungo Baggins." Implication: she had
adventures before. Makes one wonder what zany hijinx Gandalf had her
get up to in her youth, heh.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:00 PM
hehe
Varda — Yesterday at 5:00 PM
Aye to that!
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:01 PM
Maybe more than stealing mushrooms, heh?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:01 PM
Belladonna prequel.
Someone make it happen.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:01 PM

Why would they name a girl hobbit after deadly nightshade? Maybe
that affected her?
[5:04 PM]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atropa_belladonna
Atropa belladonna
Atropa belladonna, commonly known as belladonna
or deadly nightshade, is a toxic perennial herbaceous plant in the
nightshade family Solanaceae, which also includes tomatoes, potatoes
and eggplant (aubergine). It is native to Europe and Western Asia,
including Turkey. Its distribution extends from Ireland in the west
to western Ukraine and the I...
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:04 PM
Another Tolkien pun on words....Belladonna is a poisonous member of
the Nightshade family, that includes tomatoes...not good stuff. BTW,
nightshade is "nichtscada" in German, I believe, attesting to its
presence from ery Old English.
You beat me to the punch Varda! I wish I could type faster!

schaduw = shade, schade = damage... considering it's deadly, no
surprising it's called nachtschade here
Varda — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
Linnaeus chose the species name belladonna ("beautiful woman" in
Italian) in reference to the cosmetic use of the plant during the
Renaissance
[5:08 PM]
Funny, Eonwe : )
I wonder what happened to the sisters?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:12 PM
Hmm, no doubt related, same in Dutch.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
Quick check of the family tree shows 11 siblings for Belladonna,
Donnamira and MIrabella being the two sisters born right after her.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
Were they Italian, somehow?

Personal gaming report
[9:22 PM]
For (non)flashgaming, I give you
https://www.kongregate.com/games/JuicyBeast/burrito-bison-launcha-libre
Kongregate
Burrito Bison: Launcha Libre
Burrito Bison is back! And now he brings friends
with him to prevent the gummy nation from taking over the world!
[9:22 PM]
A launch/upgrade game, part of a series wherein you play a mexican
wrestler-type character called Burrito Bison, fighting against an
army of gummy bears.
[9:23 PM]
In this installment, they've stolen your recipe book, and you need
to break through several walls to get it back!
[9:24 PM]
But the story continues after that, with rifts and timetravel and
recipe pieces to collect. Just keep buying upgrades with gold you
collect on your runs, and you'll get there in time
[9:26 PM]
Oh, the idea is that you launch yourself from a wrestling ring,
picking up speed through various special gummies/occurrences, and
basically get as far as possible while picking up gold and
completing random quests.
[9:27 PM]
So if you have the patience for that, enjoy!
Blizzard gaming:
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:29 PM
Diablo 4:
Went back to my main character for a bit, the druid, whose job it is
to get renown objectives. He's up to level 54.75 now, getting
another paragon point, and unlocking a new paragon board. Being a
bear spec, I've decided to get the paragon board that focuses on
bear, to get some special bonuses.
Currently working on side quests in Scosglen, so will be doing a few
more of those
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:31 PM
In addition to evertyhing else, no doubt.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:31 PM
Well, yes, of course But these is my current "progress"-focus.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:31 PM
Not a problem!
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:32 PM
Hearthstone:
Currently level 41 on the new reward track, with a few new card
rewards.
Also got enough gold to buy a new class skin which appears to be
randomly available from the shop; this time I got the hunter skin
Flamewalker Rexxar.
[9:33 PM]
I know it's all cosmetic, but it's nice to have that to spend gold
on
[9:34 PM]
Working on the new event quest, focused on the new expansion, with a
Wanted theme, playing various new legendaries or similar minion
types to each legendary.
Now halfway, so getting there!
[9:36 PM]
Tavern brawl is Cloneball: You get a deck of random legendaries,
each cloned 4 times. Very random indeed, as some are rather
situational, but with a bit of luck you'll get there. At one point I
got a shaman deck with multiple totem-buffing legendaries, so you
can get fun gimmicky decks that way
[9:37 PM]
Warcraft Rumble: level 19 overall now. With the mini collection
complete, I've been working on collecting leaders from the grid and
upgrading some to uncommon as well.
[9:39 PM]
The new leaders I got are pretty good: Drakkisath, the other
Blackrock leader; more versatile than the other one, since he's
focused on elemental damage, and there's a lot more variation in
elemental-using minis than there is in flying minis for the other
one.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:39 PM
And I got the last 2 beast leaders, Hogger the gnoll and Murk-eye
the murloc. Hogger's the beast leader I wanted the most, and I'm
having fun leveling him and the beast cards I use with him
[9:40 PM]
I also got Baron Rivendare upgraded to Uncommon, giving him access
to a single talent of my choosing, and while it took a while to show
up on the grid, I did manage to buy the best talent for him, Chill
of the Grave, to summon skeletal mages passively.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:41 PM
I llve the names applied to these creatures, or whatever they
are....
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:41 PM
With both Hogger and Rivendare I've had some success in the dungeon
as well, getting 3 army upgrade levels for each. Getting
there!
hehe
[9:42 PM]
gnolls are dog-like humanoids, and murlocs are fish-people
Both are classic Warcraft creature types!
[9:43 PM]
Got a few more fights done in the sigil campaign, in
Lordaeron/Tirisfal Glades. One fight left there, but I'll still
level my minis a bit before tackling it
But since I've started picking up leaders from the grid, I'm not too
fussed about unlocking leaders through the campaign, they'll be
duplicates before long. In fact, I'm only missing 4 more: 2 alliance
and 2 horde, but the ones I have for those are pretty good already
anyway.
[9:44 PM]
WoW:
We cleared the new raid on normal, and making progress on heroic
too, getting the first 2 bosses down.
[9:45 PM]
Along the way I've gotten several new pieces of loot, including my
2-piece setbonus. I've had to switch my feral spec talents to make
use of it though; the bonus buffs Feral Frenzy, which I didn't
have But I talented out of a few minor aoe talents to get
there, so it's fine.
[9:46 PM]
Weekly quest is arena skirmishes, and been doing okay on that. Got
to honor level 119 along the way. Should have enough conquest
currency to buy the second pvp trinket for this season by the end of
the week, as well.
[9:48 PM]
Anniversary world bosses still here, and got a few new
appearances With my mage I got 2 new items from the green
dragons Emeriss and Ysondre, so only 2 of the green dragons need her
to come out to fight anymore.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:48 PM
And my evoker's mail gathering is also going well, as he's gotten
the last mail pieces from Azuregos and Kazzak, which means that for
him also just the green dragons remain, as well as Doomwalker. But
two more out of the way bosses are done for him now, so that's nice
[9:49 PM]
Oh, and the mage got to level 63 along the way, so yay!
[9:50 PM]
Finally, logged the goblin warrior for a bit! She's gotten to level
8 now, and finally finished all the quests on the exploding home
island of Kezan.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:50 PM
Good for you! Or the Mage!
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:51 PM
Last I left her she was shipwrecked after evacuating on the trade
prince's ship, and this new island will continue her story, as we
meet up with the Horde faction.
And that's my report for the week
[9:53 PM]
Namarie!

Varda — Today at 1:09 PM
Here's another potential theme for next anniversary (since we need
more than one to have any kind of voting choice):
[1:09 PM]
Olvar (plants). As seen in Tolkien and in-game weird plants
(including WoW's mushroom forest, as a place in which Hobbits could
rejoice). Perhaps it could include plant references, such as an
essay on Belladonna Took's name, for instance.
