Interesting. We may have some kind of aid in that trinket. I
wonder if it reacts to the hidden doohickey that we don't know you
have.

Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:07 PM
From my recent trip east...a view of the famous Delaware Water
Gap, where the Delaware River cuts through the Blue Mountain.
Pretty exciting to drive through it. The rocks are dipping upwards
towards the viewer...they next come to the earth somewhere in
northwest Morocco.

Heya all.

Arien Valar Yesterday at 4:07 PM
Interesting little bit there Eonwe .. very much reminds me of the
blue area in which Asterion is trapped in Bashal Aran [Note:
referring to the forum story we are doing together.]
@Ar-Pharazon-V
I had trouble enough just trying to visualize that trinket,
geometrically its description was similar to a ring
Eonw๋ Valar Yesterday at 4:08 PM
I guess I should've given a description of something more like a
small metal box with an open end, hehe. That might've at least
given a better visual idea. (edited)
Arien Valar Yesterday at 4:09 PM
the blue aura is avoided by the demons for some reason hehe
Eonw๋ Valar Yesterday at 4:09 PM
hehe.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 4:09 PM
What exactly is going up in that picture, Sandalf?
[4:09 PM]
It looks like a road, but launches into the sky.
Varda Yesterday at 4:10 PM
Tube maybe, Eonwe?
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:11 PM
If you look at the top of the mountain, especially the one to the
east of the Water Gap (on the right) you can see outcrops of
Tuscarora Formation. You are looking at a side view of them. The
rocks are dipping down into the mountains, and have been cut away
by erosion of the mountain range. This very rock corresponds to a
similar formation in northwest Morocco, that was once connected
across a huge mountain range - the ancestral Appalachian
(Hercynian) Mountains.
[4:12 PM]
It is an old picture.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 4:12 PM
Ah, it's a fold in the picture
[4:13 PM]
And yes, it must be quite old, then, if it preceded the opening of
Pangaea :)
[4:13 PM]
The mountainrange, that is, not the picture.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:16 PM
Yes. The Appalachians and the Hercynian Mtns in Europe are the
worn down remnants of a range that was once as tall as the
Himalayas are today.
Arien Valar Yesterday at 4:16 PM
wow
[4:17 PM]
fascinating
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:17 PM
This is a view from the north looking south through the gap.
The other picture was looking north from 15 miles south of the
gap. One can clearly see the Tuscarora Sandstone dipping upwards
here.

Varda Yesterday at 4:18 PM
Dipping upwards. Nifty description.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 4:19 PM
I always like how if you get close to such things, all you see is
the green But from far away, the folds are clearly visible
through it.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:19 PM
Sort of like the Lorelei on the Rhine in Germany.
Arien Valar Yesterday at 4:22 PM
it does indeed look like there
[4:22 PM]
i ve been up there for a concert once a long long time ago
@Varda
Tube maybe, Eonwe?
Eonw๋ Valar Yesterday at 4:24 PM
Basically supposed to be something small enough to fit in a pocket
(and thus possible to lose), probably not much bigger than a ring
(heh), intricate, with the right angles on the inside to direct
light through the sapphire and cast a giant blue eagle on the
wall, hehe.
Varda Yesterday at 4:25 PM
I assumed something like a tube shape, easy to hold and let light
through to make a colored light picture.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 4:25 PM
Right, so it's not like sapphire attached to ring with hole cut
alongside it, but cut from the other end towards the sapphire.
[4:25 PM]
Now I get it
Varda Yesterday at 4:26 PM
Kind of the idea of a kaleidoscope without the turning. Or
shadowbox.
[4:26 PM]
Not those, but in the category maybe.
Eonw๋ Valar Yesterday at 4:26 PM
I guess so. I can't think of the right analogue for it, but I
suppose that's close.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 4:27 PM
I'm thinking like a slide/projector
Varda Yesterday at 4:27 PM
using ambient light
[4:28 PM]
It's a new thing. Nifty.
Eonw๋ Valar Yesterday at 4:29 PM
Kind of like having a colored lens with a fancy shape on a
flashlight, minus the flashlight, heh.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 4:30 PM
that also works!

Web:
I seem somehow to have skipped over the
Web News on a day when we have some. : )
[4:37 PM]
The forum post is web news, and we're ready for new posts.
[4:37 PM]
Also, in Web News:
[4:37 PM]
We have new stories by Eonwe-(Valar)
[4:38 PM]
This is in his series about Auros:
[4:38 PM]
"Horseplay". "Introduces Auros and his cousin Farothel to
their soon-to-be friend Aldaw๋ and his sister Dinmir."
[4:38 PM]
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/fiction/authors/Eonwe/stories/Horseplay.htm
[4:38 PM]
"Apple a Day". Three years after "Horseplay". Written in
the 100-word challenge form called a Drabble.
[4:38 PM]

[4:39 PM]
They're fairly short, so you may be giving Eonwe comments before
the end of the meeting. : )

Varda Yesterday at 4:43 PM
Any gaming or other news you'd like to pass along, Elrond? And hi
to Celebrian. : )
Elrond Yesterday at 4:44 PM
We've just been engrossed in FFXIV in
the nightlife/club scene there. Having a blast with the social
aspect of that game.
[4:44 PM]
That's about it
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 4:44 PM
Nice to have a club scene without chance of covid, eh?
Elrond Yesterday at 4:45 PM
Yeah, or for us old farts our back going out
Varda Yesterday at 4:45 PM
Sounds fun, Elrond. : )
[4:46 PM]
Fladrif introduced me to Second Life a while back, lot of social
and building aspects there. What is the nightlife like in Final
Fantasy?
Elrond Yesterday at 4:48 PM
Mostly there are private houses turned into Nightclubs, and they
have live DJ's on twitch, so you come there, dance, meet people,
make friends. Sometimes there are theme nights, pool/beach
parties, etc. Celebrian and I actually work as dancers at one of
the clubs now..
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Yes, that could be tricky if your back's going out.

Tolkien!
[4:51 PM]
We have a topic tonight from Sandalf:
[4:51 PM]
Which character in the LoTR
develops/grows/matures(?) the most through the course of the
story? (This is one of the subjects of a chapter of mine,
and I am curious to see what others think as well)
[4:52 PM]
I (Varda again) had an immediate choice with a second, but want to
hear yours first.
[4:52 PM]
Toss some names out there!
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 4:52 PM
Some of the hobbits come to mind!
[4:52 PM]
Pippin probably went the most distance.
[4:53 PM]
Since he had furthest to go
[4:53 PM]
Merry came up alongside him though!
[4:53 PM]
Even when apart.
[4:53 PM]
(or especially?)
[4:54 PM]
Sam... more seems like it was inside him all the time, but he
never had the opportunity. Not sure if he really changed, or just
showed more of himself.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:54 PM
I tend to think of Merry/Pippin as a couplet...and yes, they
certainly did grow a lot in the book, I believe. I will throw
anotgher possiblity out as a hook...what about Boromir? He went
from a slightly arrogant, warrior-type son of a traditionalist
Steward who had some firm ideas about leadership in Gondor...to,
facing death, a realization that Aragorn was indeed the King.
Varda Yesterday at 4:55 PM
I agree that Boromir grew a great deal!
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 4:56 PM
Very true. It seemed to happen in a short time, but he grew a lot
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:56 PM
And then there is Gimli...
Varda Yesterday at 4:57 PM
Gimli and Legolas both, for the change in attitude that caused war
and distrust between their peoples.
[4:58 PM]
Frodo is my top choice. Even Saruman recognized the change.
[4:58 PM]
Any other comments, even if not your top choice?
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 4:59 PM
Not a fun way to have to grow, though, what he went through.,.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:59 PM
What about Aragorn himself?
[4:59 PM]
Or did he "have it in him" from the beginning?
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:00 PM
Heh, I certainly made that a thing, didn't I?
Varda Yesterday at 5:00 PM
Aragorn mostly had it in him, but he grew too.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:01 PM
Gandalf grew, becoming more serious and more powerful after his
comeback, or at least, outwardly.
Eonw๋ Valar Yesterday at 5:01 PM
Aragorn had a life's worth of trials before he even got to the War
of the Ring.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:01 PM
More like more of his potential was unlocked, perhaps
Varda Yesterday at 5:01 PM
That would be more accurate, Phar, seems like.
[5:02 PM]
It would be easy to see it as Aragorn's story, but it's really
not.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:03 PM
It was neither all of his story, nor was it all his
story.
Varda Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Maybe the hobbits helped Aragorn with upping his patience ability.
: )
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Which is nice about Tolkien's work. Storylines intertwining, with
extra information given around
Varda Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Aye
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Hah, perhaps, so did Boromir, Varda
[5:04 PM]
Lobelia grew, as a result of people being kind and appreciative.
[5:04 PM]
Guess she missed out on a long time of not knowing she preferred
to be like.
[5:04 PM]
*liked
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:05 PM
Never gave that one much thought...but you are right!
Arien Valar Yesterday at 5:05 PM
probably Boromir was no easy going type with strangers , at least
i got that impression
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:05 PM
Especially those backward non-Gondorians.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:06 PM
I think that an overlooked joy in the LoTR is the raft of
characters that Tolkien gives the reader, and then allowing the
reader to see how each one grows and develops throughout the
work...some certainly "grow" more than others...
Varda Yesterday at 5:06 PM
Lobelia's bravery was recognized, something that had not had a
real chance to shine out before.
[5:06 PM]
It gave her a breakthrough.
[5:06 PM]
Aye, Sandalf.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:07 PM
Even some of the "minor" characters show great development in the
work...e.g., Bergil, or his father, Beregond...
Varda Yesterday at 5:07 PM
Sorry, but I need to move this to After-meeting. Please feel free
to continue with the topic as free chat!

Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:09 PM
Really something to go from a common member of the Palace Guard to
become the Captain of the White Company...
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:09 PM
Happy "near enough to father"'s day to Bilbo, raising Frodo as his
son
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:09 PM
What about Elrond raising his own twins, Arwen, PLUS little Estel?
Arien Valar Yesterday at 5:09 PM
:)
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:11 PM
At least the other 3 were about 3000 years old already when he got
to take care of Esel.
[5:11 PM]
Estel.
[5:11 PM]
At that age they can hopefully take care of themselves.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:11 PM
I guess he had some experience, then...
Arien Valar Yesterday at 5:12 PM
getting back into it after a long time i d think was not that easy
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:12 PM
He must have had, because he did a bang-up job raising Estel,
especially given the relatively few years he had to raise him!
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:13 PM
20 years? Who can properly raise anyone in 20 years? It needs at
least 50!
[5:14 PM]
That explains why so many of us adults are still children
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Especially true because the average human male does not mature
braibn-wise until their mid-20s....women, of course, are more
advanced evolutionarily speaking, and mature faster...
Eonw๋ Valar Yesterday at 5:16 PM
And yet, for some strange reason, Men are still here, almost like
we serve some purpose.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:17 PM
Opening jars of pickles.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:17 PM
two of the better ones of Elrond as a father to Estel/
[Note: Discord images only, without a way to give proper credit to
the originators here.]
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:18 PM
That top one is so based on Hugo.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:19 PM
Maybe too much so? But that is the problem with movies...once we
let a director define what our favorite characters look like, that
image often stays with us...
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:20 PM
People like visual when it comes to media, both in the observing
and the expressing. If an appearance becomes somewhat common, it
might motivate more people to make art of it.
[5:20 PM]
So maybe the result is worth it
[5:21 PM]
There is something to be said for being allowed your own
headcanon, of course.
[5:22 PM]
I remember imagining when I first read LotR that Hobbits were
greenskinned creatures like Warcraft 2 goblins
Arien Valar Yesterday at 5:23 PM
i wonder why
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:23 PM
Then there is Tolkien's mention of Sam's BROWN hand...
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:23 PM
I was about 14 years old, such detail didn't stick with me
Eonw๋ Valar Yesterday at 5:24 PM
Because Sam works in the sun? He's a gardener.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:24 PM
If they've got hairy feet, might have hairy hands as well, that
might be the brown!
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:24 PM
Perhaps Tolkien was trying to shake up our preconceptions?
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:25 PM
Looks like I was 16 when the Fellowship movie came out, guess that
imagine of green hobbits didn't survive long.
[5:25 PM]
*image
Eonw๋ Valar Yesterday at 5:26 PM
I think he was trying to make a point about it, he'd have
mentioned it in an interview somewhere, or in one of his notes.
Arien Valar Yesterday at 5:30 PM
welll unfortunately it is bed time for me .. and Sam was a
wonderful father to his children , thats for sure
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:30 PM

Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:33 PM
record players?
Eonw๋ Valar Yesterday at 5:33 PM
Them too.
[5:34 PM]
I can't believe those still exist.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:34 PM
Happy Fathers day to all of you, too!
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:35 PM
And to you
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:35 PM

Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:38 PM
If Starcraft has anything to say about it, record players will be
around for centuries more.
[5:38 PM]
Or our dear admiral just had an appreciation for the classics.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:38 PM
I still have my "record players" in my storage locker...with lots
and lots of classic 33 rpm vinyls..
[5:38 PM]
Even some old 78s!
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:43 PM
Plenty of vinyls around here belonging to my parents, I'm pretty
sure there's a player around here too.
[5:43 PM]
I think they'll keep coming back for the experience and nostalgia
of using them
[5:44 PM]
Actually, I had some of those as well as a kid.

Also got enough gold to buy the Sunken City miniset! Not sure what
to do with the gold I'm getting now. There does seem to be a
battlegrounds bartender skin in the shop for gold, when I hit 1500
gold I'll see if it's still up. Looks like this occasional gold
offer is a recurring thing for different features, so might as
well spend some cash there, or save for the inevitable next
miniset in a future expansion.
[6:26 PM]
Or packs, but... strangely enough I care less and less about
actually buying cards in this ccg
[6:27 PM]
Heck, got 156 unopened right now... should work on those.
[6:29 PM]
Brawl is Half & Half, where each player makes a deck of 15
cards, and they are added together for both players in the match.
[6:30 PM]
Like last time it was up, I made a rogue deck with nothing but
weaponbuffs but no weapons (since rogue class ability is a weapon
of his own), which means half the deck is practically useless to
the opponent in most matchups, while you are free to use both
halves Especially fun to see the opponent's hand fill up
with cards he can't use as you try to balance the board up until
that inevitable breaking point
[6:32 PM]
For mercenaries, a bunch of levels gotten all over the place,
mostly going to 2 of the 4 Celestials: Yu'lon and Niuzao, as they
had quests to get to level 15.
[6:33 PM]
Also completed a nr 16 task for a merc, giving me a free pack,
which gave me one of the new mercenaries, Patches the Pirate.
[6:33 PM]
Also got enough coins for Edwin VanCleef, leader of the Defias
Brotherhood!
[6:34 PM]
So yay, more pirates
[6:35 PM]
WoW:
[6:36 PM]
Raiding continuing, as we keep pushing on Lords of Dread, which is
actually pretty tough. Closest we've gotten so far is about 20%,
but getting things under control!
[6:37 PM]
After this reset we'll be taking a holiday break for a few weeks
though, so no raiding. Guess that means more alt-time!
[6:38 PM]
Weekly is timewalks, which went rather fast since I got End Time a
couple of times, which counts for 2 for the weekly quest for some
reason.
[6:41 PM]
Other than that.. mostly just alting. Between 3 alts, their
covenant campaigns and Korthia, I've calculated I need a daunting
total of 174 story chapters before I'm heading into Zereth Mortis,
which is rather more than I expected, but we're pushing on.
[6:42 PM]
Paladin's been cruising through Bastion some more, enjoying
Ascended lore, fighting Forsworn, discovering more about them, and
fighting her way to the Maldraxxi invasion at the end of the
zone's storyline.
[6:43 PM]
Along the way she's also gotten her Steward, and since she will be
going for this covenant, said Steward will be a recurring
appearance
[6:45 PM]
Many stewards to choose from, but I chose Farra! A golden armored
female (fitting with my paladin) with Tara Strong/Twilight
Sparkle's voice, and... well... Farra's pretty close to
Phara(zon), so it fit
[6:45 PM]
Perfect match, possibly!
[6:48 PM]
Alcaria's gone from level 52 to 54 along the way, and is about
ready to finish up Bastion and head to Maldraxxus. I was worried
about her gear/stats, but apparently in your fifties heirlooms
still scale up nicely, and remaining slots have been seeing good
quest rewards. So she should be good to go in her continuing
Shadowlands adventures
[6:50 PM]
And that's my report for the week!

I'll have to turn my attention elsewhere soon, but I want to make
sure I also say Happy Father's Day to the men out there who are
fathers.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 8:27 PM
namarie!
Varda Yesterday at 11:22 PM
Takes a real man to be a father, agreed. : )
