Web:
In the art site, we have screenshots from Arien of some places in Middle-earth from Lord of the Rings Online. The idea is to find shots we can use in the Encyclopedia, a tricky thing to do sometimes.
Here's the direct link:
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/art/gallery/Arien/LotRO.htm
    Middle-earth scenes in LotRO
    screenshots
The name of Arien's hobbit is Crelambert,
and the other is Anarduil.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:18 PM
Hah! Reminds me of the hobbit/halfling Lambert in a webcomic...
VardaLast Sunday at 4:18 PM
I intend to make that correction. Writing it here helps make  sure it happens. : )
Me too. ; )

A reminder to help with the Timeline by Anarion that we added to, as it makes a great jump-off point for articles:
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/events/timeline/Complete_Chronology_of_First_Age.htm
It is a very good way to keep one's mind straight on when and where events occurred, and link to the characters living then.
Thank you again, to Anarion. : )
Feel free to mention if you have any Tolkien or Middle-earth related news.

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:22 PM
Well, a small question came to mind that is member/tolkien-related...
VardaLast Sunday at 4:22 PM
Also on our website, Eonwe has been keeping us updated on Gaming. Feel free to send him reports as reporters, and feel free to cc me for the General News if you like.

Phar, go ahead.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:23 PM
I opened Book of Lost Tales on a whim last night, and read through the cottage of lost play.
VardaLast Sunday at 4:23 PM
Love people's light reading around here. : )
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:23 PM
And started wondering if there were members of the Valarguild who had taken their names from the Lost Tales instead
VardaLast Sunday at 4:24 PM
We do that from all the books in gaming, as alternate names, sometimes mishmashed to be ok in that gaming world.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:24 PM
But not as primary member names?
VardaLast Sunday at 4:24 PM
Most can be "translated" to the primary name.
Fionwe is known by us as Eonwe, for instance.
The other names are considered alternate names for the same member.
I originally wanted to use Elbereth, but it's much easier to type Varda. ; )
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:26 PM
Yes, but there are some unique to the Tales, like Eriol, Meril, Littleheart, and others.
I was just curious
VardaLast Sunday at 4:26 PM
Where the name is unique, that is fine, yes.
We had a member named Chrysophylax for a while.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:27 PM
Ah yes, that works too
VardaLast Sunday at 4:27 PM
It is ok to do, aye.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:27 PM
Just a small wondering, that's all. Opens up the list of possible member names a bit.
Proceed
VardaLast Sunday at 4:28 PM
That's correct and has been true all along. Trick is to find someone who wants to use one or is aware of them early on.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:28 PM
Hmhm. They're not common knowledge.
VardaLast Sunday at 4:28 PM
It can be tricky to have a "relationship" with other members from a character who was never around them, but we handle that all the time anyway.
Right. Most of our members learn those books after joining, but we have a number of scholars who already knew them.
They have to want to be known by that name, too.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:29 PM
Hah, yes.
VardaLast Sunday at 4:30 PM
You took your name to redeem it from one who besmirched it, and did a great job of it!
We have many reasons for picking our names.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:30 PM
Hah, I'd forgotten about the previous one.
VardaLast Sunday at 4:30 PM
(I liked being a warcry.)
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:30 PM
hehe
VardaLast Sunday at 4:30 PM
I have a strangely long memory. : )
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:31 PM
I have a strangely short one. Just this afternoon I happened to be pondering how I found the guild in the first place.
Probably something Warcraftrelated
VardaLast Sunday at 4:31 PM
One reason to say your "few words" when joining. You can look back at the transcript to read it.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:32 PM
Could work!
VardaLast Sunday at 4:32 PM
I mean, when people do that. It can't happen when they don't come to meetings where we can introduce them.
I joined from Diablo 1 when Eru saw my Tolkien name and talked to me about it.
and I brought friends.
Anyone else like to share their story?
AnarionLast Sunday at 4:34 PM
I remember having to do some wiki-ing for my name
VardaLast Sunday at 4:34 PM
You and many others. : )
I try to make our site available to make it easier to find a name.
They can search under the race as a subject and see if any appeal.
It's easiest if they have a preferred race!
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:35 PM
"
Ar-Pharazon said his few words of introduction. He's from the Netherlands and hopes to clear the bad taste from the guild name he took, as a challenge. He is very well-read in Tolkien and plays many games."
VardaLast Sunday at 4:35 PM
There you go!
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:35 PM
Hmm. My well-read-ness is slacking (though apparently restored a bit last night!) and my "many games" has been reduced to WoW and a few blizzard and browser games.
Still!
VardaLast Sunday at 4:36 PM
Time passes. : )
What year does that show?
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:36 PM
2003. I knew it was around that time :stuck_out_tongue:
VardaLast Sunday at 4:36 PM
Very good! Dates are a weakness for me.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:38 PM
Yeah, I was probably looking for Tolkien-maps in Warcraft 3 or something and must've stumbled on the guild. I know I started a test, then finished it a week later on the anniversary
And here I am!
VardaLast Sunday at 4:38 PM
Yay!

World of WarCraft:

The Thousand Boat Bash begins the 6th and ran through Saturday, June 8th.
A new preview is out. The title says it all: Many New Treasures Await in Rise of Azshara.

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:40 PM
That was a long list to read through, let alone collect...
VardaLast Sunday at 4:40 PM
Check out this week's hotfixes.
: )

We used to have a lot of Tolkien world maps before the estate asked people to take most of them down. They needed to publish their own map book without a lot of free competition.
Eonwe ValarLast Sunday at 4:41 PM
Heya all.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:41 PM
Aiya!
VardaLast Sunday at 4:42 PM
We support the Tolkien family any way we can, so the non-competers were the only ones remaining.
Aiya Eonwe! Just talking about your Games Site entries. Thanks!
Eonwe ValarLast Sunday at 4:42 PM
(Caught up on previous chat. Note to Phar: We did have the Vala Makar for a while, probably before your time though.)
VardaLast Sunday at 4:43 PM
Aye, we did. His brother still holds the streaming for us, Scatha.
Last I heard.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:43 PM
Hmm, it does sound familiar. If I hadn't met him, he was probably mentioned after I joined.
Eonwe ValarLast Sunday at 4:43 PM
Streaming? I think you mean the Steam community?
VardaLast Sunday at 4:43 PM
Yes, thanks.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:43 PM

VardaLast Sunday at 4:44 PM
heh. Good thing we have a lot of heads here to help remember.

Eonwe ValarLast Sunday at 4:46 PM
Oh, and the current Maiar Alatar and Pallando, but that I think is more UT than BoLT. I'd count it as "names in use from outside LotR/Hobbit/Sil" though :}
VardaLast Sunday at 4:46 PM
Aye. Outside the main three.
You all know Pallando of Eve Online.
Alatar provides the lion's share of our web space, on his own dime. Thank you!

Lord of the Rings Online:
Update 24: Vales of Andiun is available. Some big changes are included, like a 64-bit client and an overhaul of the Virtue system, so check it out.

AnarionLast Sunday at 4:48 PM
Another virtue overhaul, haha.
ArienValarLast Sunday at 4:48 PM
Vales of Anduin are nice and green
VardaLast Sunday at 4:49 PM
This is a system overhaul on the virtues. You can shove all the points you earn into one you want to push, even if it's from what used to be other deeds.
ArienValarLast Sunday at 4:49 PM
And nice story lines .. just to water your mouths
Eonwe ValarLast Sunday at 4:49 PM
Typo noted and corrected, oh Kindler of Lights :}
VardaLast Sunday at 4:49 PM
New Vales of Anduin area. Two new book chapters for the Black Book of Mordor.(edited)
Speedy, there, oh Vala and Herald of us all.
That typo of mine was too egregious to understand. Edited aread to area.
The really big change all across LotRO is being able to use 64-bit instead of 32-bit if you choose.
Some are still having trouble with it, but most are thrilled with the improvement.
Anyway, have fun with it!
Eonwe ValarLast Sunday at 4:53 PM
So far for me seems to load faster.
VardaLast Sunday at 4:53 PM
It does for me too, and looks better.
Smoother, not having crash problems. For my system at least.

Eonwe ValarLast Sunday at 4:57 PM

VardaLast Sunday at 4:57 PM
Where is it?
AnarionLast Sunday at 4:57 PM
It's the largest confrence in gaming

Yeah.
If you're a console gamer, that's probably where you'll hear big news about your console of choice.
Microsoft had a press conference today. Haven't looked over it.
VardaLast Sunday at 5:02 PM

Tolkien!
If you have something you'd like to bring up, please do. Don't feel like you're breaking in too much because it's typiing.
Earlier we were talking about names we only hear outside H/LotR/Sil
One reason is that they come from notes outside the main published stories. Some may have only existed on the back of envelopes.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 5:10 PM
Many treasures on the back of examination papers
VardaLast Sunday at 5:10 PM
In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit. (The most famous one!)
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 5:10 PM
Indeed!
VardaLast Sunday at 5:11 PM
JRRT was a writer of long stories living during a paper shortage. He used a regular typewriter and said he could not afford the services of the ten-finger typists.
And yet. Look how much he produced!
And the quality.
And he kept it mostly secret, as fiction writing, especially fantasy, was not what a professor was supposed to do.
It gave him a way to explain the languages he invented, of which there were many.
Not all made it into the books!
He wrote outside working hours on his own time. We know he often wrote after bedtime because it was quiet.
ArienValarLast Sunday at 5:14 PM
. hahaha thats why he wrote his stories first on the sides of his books and exercise books
then he picked his ideas and notes out of that and used the known technique with first pencil then pen , then corrections red and last not least all over it the black finished end product
VardaLast Sunday at 5:16 PM
Even now, quite a few writers like to write by hand before typing into a computer.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 5:17 PM
Hmm, it has its charm... but I like being able to edit more easily on a computer.
ArienValarLast Sunday at 5:17 PM
makes sense if you are writing a reasonable hand  . if you have one like me you just use the computer straight away unless it is something spontaneous
VardaLast Sunday at 5:17 PM
As we become used to computers, it's easier now to type spontaneously on them, rather than just retyping it in for revisions.

ElrondLast Sunday at 5:18 PM
Aiya! on a side note with the E3 news, if you see the carpet there on the show, I did the layout for that.  That's the industry I'm in is tradeshows.
VardaLast Sunday at 5:18 PM
Imagine if JRRT had a computer? Would he be gaming or writing?
Fantastic, Elrond! Thanks for letting us know!
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 5:19 PM
Elrond's work is famous

ElrondLast Sunday at 5:20 PM
Hehe. I think he would have enjoyed the old muds, where much of the playing is left to the imagination, rather than the on-rails style we have now.
VardaLast Sunday at 5:21 PM
Very likely!
We have reached and smashed past the hour.
Thank you all for coming and being so interesting!
Feel free to chat and game together during After-meeting.
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 5:24 PM
I guess Tolkien might've enjoyed some D&D if it existed back then
He'd make an excellent dungeon master.
VardaLast Sunday at 5:24 PM
He would indeed.

Personal gaming report!

Starting with the flashgaming.
http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/drive_with_caution is the first one, a timed platformer where you have to drag handles to move bridges and obstacles and get your car to the flag. Timing gets really tough
    Drive with Caution - OneMoreLevel.com

http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/red_ball_5 is another platformer, move the red ball around the level, avoid enemies and spikes, pick up coins, get to the exit; if you get all coins, avoid getting hurt and get to the exit on time, you get 3 stars!
    Red Ball 5 - OneMoreLevel.com

http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/carrot_cave is the third game, yet another platformer! Hop and bounce around, grab carrots, avoid lava, and get to the exit before the timer runs out as can be seen at the top, and moves at various speeds.
    Carrot Cave - OneMoreLevel.com
I'm not sure about the exact mechanics, but the speed seems to vary and if you fail a level you can get an alternative level to complete in the meantime.
It's a bit weird.
reads up on game oh, apparently the timer is a turtle, and you can slow him down by grabbing carrots.
top

Heroes of the Storm:
no new levels, still 345; but there was a new mount for gold up on the featured mount list, the Happy Birthday Billie goat. So I got that one!
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 8:07 PM
Hearthstone:
All classes to 58 now! Last few golden basics are now visible, and 2 more levels to go, so end is really in sight
Got all 5 Dalaran Heist wings bought now, so I can start spending gold and opening packs. Will start that tomorrow I think
Brawl's fun, team up between Anduin (priest) and Morgl (shaman) against a Nefarian boss. Phase switches got kinda tough, but we got it done. Lots of cards that are beneficial to your teammate. Key seemed to be a few cards that rapidly increase in stats whenever either player plays a card. Very useful.
Also a few neutral legendary cards got as rewards for the events, with rather niche uses, but might be nice.
WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 8:44 PM
Jaina downed once again, so that should be the last of the achievements required. I didn't raid much this week myself, but next week we should be heading into the Crucible again, maybe complete that on heroic as well before patch its.
*hits.
Weekly this week is arena skirmishes, which I pushed through on friday and saturday, seems to be going more smoothly every time it comes up
Other than that, not much to tell, as I wasn't there for most of the week. Still doing world quests, but not much gained, certainly no new toys or anything.
And I was thinking I might get enough expedition dubloons for the mount, but still a few short!
Oh, and I bought the 25th anniversary figurines. So yay!
And that's my report for the week!
Or well, pre-ordered them. They should get here in October
namarie!
