Tolkien!
Which dragons in Tolkien's Legendarium can we think of and what part
did they play in the storyline?
AnarionYesterday at 4:31 PM
Smaug, obviously
Oh, and hi folks
VardaYesterday at 4:31 PM
Aye!
Aiya Anarion : )
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:31 PM
Aiya!
Yup, Smaug is a good one.
Antagonist of The Hobbit.
ArienValarYesterday at 4:33 PM
he captured Mount Erebor and the treasure within which
probably was gotten from the dragon before , since it worked its
evil on Thrain and Thorin
aiya Anarion
AnarionYesterday at 4:33 PM
;)
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:33 PM
Messed things up good in the northeast, culminating in a large
battle wherein the free folk almost went to war against each other
until the goblins showed up.
AnarionYesterday at 4:34 PM
Yeah, dragons and their greed was potentially a powerful weapon
Sauron could have taken advantage of
VardaYesterday at 4:34 PM
Right. Gandalf was concerned about that in Smaug's case especially.
ArienValarYesterday at 4:35 PM
Gandalf unied them last minute and the Eagles joined, as well as
Beorn .. although he definitely did NOT turn up as paratrooper
AnarionYesterday at 4:35 PM
I don't remember offhand any dragon names except Smaug. Wasn't there
a dragon that took one of the dwarven rings? Oh, right, dragons
could destroy rings, theoretically, which was sort of a minor point
at the council of Elrond
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:35 PM
Can we be sure about that?
More dragons were mentioned in the Silmarillion.
ArienValarYesterday at 4:35 PM
there was Ancalagon the black
VardaYesterday at 4:36 PM
Yes, dragonfire could destroy rings, not the One Ring though.
ArienValarYesterday at 4:36 PM
he had a run in with Gondolin wasn it?
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:36 PM
Ancalagon was the largest of dragons, unleashed during the War of
Wrath, so after the fall of Gondolin.
VardaYesterday at 4:36 PM
Even in falling, Ancalagon was so huge that his body was
destructive.
AnarionYesterday at 4:36 PM
He is likely the second most famous dragon in Tolkien's work
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:36 PM
He didn't have much success though, facing against eagles and some
guy in a flying boat.
And crashing on his master's home.
AnarionYesterday at 4:37 PM
@Varda I don't think they were certain that it couldn't destroy the
one ring
Gandalf considered it dubious
VardaYesterday at 4:37 PM
Gandalf seemed to think it unlikely.
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:38 PM
Regardless, the dragon in question was already dead, so they'd never
know for sure
AnarionYesterday at 4:38 PM
haha
VardaYesterday at 4:38 PM
Makes it tough to check.
Also, different dragons had different strengths of fire, apparently.
And they didn't all use fire.
AnarionYesterday at 4:39 PM
Wait, what? Some of the dragons weren't fire dragons?
VardaYesterday at 4:39 PM
Cold drakes
If we can include drakes.
AnarionYesterday at 4:39 PM
Interesting!
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:39 PM
Frostwyrms!
ArienValarYesterday at 4:40 PM
i think i remember Tolkien mentioning them and we definitlely got to
deal with them in game
VardaYesterday at 4:40 PM
Glaurung was a major storyline dragon.
ArienValarYesterday at 4:40 PM
but i cannot drag up where exactly and where they resided? i
guess around the Helcaraxe maybe?
VardaYesterday at 4:40 PM
in the Silmarillion
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:40 PM
Not a flying one though.
VardaYesterday at 4:41 PM
True. Not all dragons could fly.
ArienValarYesterday at 4:41 PM
oh yes , he took over Nargothrond or do i mix that up agaoi
again?
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:41 PM
He did.
ArienValarYesterday at 4:41 PM
he also teased and cursde turin?
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:41 PM
Yep.
ArienValarYesterday at 4:41 PM
revealed Nianors identity
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:41 PM
And before all that he came out in a major battle on Morgoth's
behalf.
VardaYesterday at 4:41 PM
Nienor, aye, in the worst possible time
ArienValarYesterday at 4:42 PM
yeah ..well .. i dont do names .. quite .. cough
VardaYesterday at 4:42 PM
That's why we have several of us around. Together we can come up
with the whole thing. : )
AnarionYesterday at 4:42 PM
So all three dragons we have here took the side of evil, but Gandalf
at the council of Elrond seemed to think that a dragon would be
willing to help fight evil given sufficient inducement
VardaYesterday at 4:43 PM
? I don't remember that.
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:43 PM
Don't remember it either, but I can see it happening... they were
mostly independent types, not eager to serve a dark lord (though
they did), preferring their own kingdoms.
Might be an enemy of my enemy thing.
I can't imagine they felt much loyalty towards Sauron, though
probably saw him as a useful ally.
AnarionYesterday at 4:44 PM
IIRC they were briefly discussing the possibility of using a dragon
to destroy the ring, and they were discussing the feasibility of
getting the dragon to do the deed. A sort of "even if we found a
candidate, how would we make it work?"
VardaYesterday at 4:44 PM
Well, they might trick one into it.
They are known to have destroyed other rings. I wonder why they did
it before?
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:45 PM
"Look, mister dragon, a tasty goat!" hides ring in fur
VardaYesterday at 4:45 PM
There you go!
AnarionYesterday at 4:46 PM
Yeah, I imagine that wouldn't be super difficult, even in-combat.
But I thought I remembered it discussed
as kinda a throwaway sentence
VardaYesterday at 4:46 PM
Aye, I agree they mentioned it, but not so much as the dragon doing
it out of goodness, heh.
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:47 PM
Tricking a dragon into melting a ring and getting him to actually
fight evil with you are two very different things
VardaYesterday at 4:47 PM
Just have to be smart! Right.
AnarionYesterday at 4:47 PM
haha, fair enough. If there were sufficient riches in all of middle
earth, do you think they could've convinced Smaug to help out?
at say, Pelenor fields?
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:48 PM
Possibly, though I don't think they would've been able to keep him
from feasting on Rohan's cavalry after the battle.
VardaYesterday at 4:48 PM
Interesting thought
Even Sauron didn't really try to control some beings, such as Smaug
and Shelob, but set them up with encouragement where they were great
hindrances to the Free Peoples.
Smaug would have been a disaster if he had remained where he was.
Gandalf had to have Smaug removed.
AnarionYesterday at 4:50 PM
How so? Mirkwood was pretty removed from most of the action
VardaYesterday at 4:50 PM
It was in a pass area, not as far over as Mirkwood.
AnarionYesterday at 4:51 PM
Wait, wasn't it beyond mirkwood?
east of rivendell?
now I have to look at a map
VardaYesterday at 4:51 PM
It was beyond Mirkwood, aye. Thranduil had to travel to reach it.
Another dragon was Scatha.
ArienValarYesterday at 4:52 PM
uhm phari .. that sounds familiar
getting a dragon to melt something ;P)
Scatha was mentioned once i think or twice?
AnarionYesterday at 4:54 PM
According to the wiki the conceit with Scatha was that dwarves and
elves men fought over his hoard. An elf man claimed it by right of
beating Scatha for it, the dwarves by right of being the original
owners
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:54 PM
I'm familiar with the concept, but I'm not sure what you're
referring to specifically, Arien
AnarionYesterday at 4:55 PM
Definitely another greed-themed event
VardaYesterday at 4:55 PM
You mean the Rohirrim?
back before they settled in Rohan though.
Eowyn gave Merry the Horn of the Mark from Scatha's hoard.
AnarionYesterday at 4:56 PM
Oh, yes, I mean men and dwarves, not elves and dwarves
VardaYesterday at 4:57 PM
Eotheod starts with an E too. ; )
Some of you might also remember Chrysophylax?
AnarionYesterday at 4:58 PM
Another theme for dragons, looking at the wiki for guidance, is
simply dwarves. The Great Cold Drake killed Dain I
VardaYesterday at 4:59 PM
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/d/Dain_I_A.htm
Dain I
Article on the Dwarf, Dain I.
Aye
So there's a known cold drake right there.
AnarionYesterday at 5:01 PM
Looks like no one remembers Chrysophylax. Looking at the wiki, is
Chrysophylax a LOTR thing?
VardaYesterday at 5:01 PM
Not in the LotR or Sil
He was a major character in Tolkien's "Farmer Giles of Ham"
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:01 PM
Ah yes, I remember that one  Silly story.
VardaYesterday at 5:02 PM
JRRT didn't always stick to being frightfully serious. : )
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:02 PM
That was, strangely, a dragon that did keep his word, though, I
think, in the end?
ArienValarYesterday at 5:03 PM
I loved that story  i got the book in my collecrton
together with another one
VardaYesterday at 5:03 PM
He did work with the farmer, partly due to a misunderstanding.
It's in The Tolkien Reader.
ArienValarYesterday at 5:03 PM
there are two stories that go together there
Smith of Cotton Major ? i think so
VardaYesterday at 5:04 PM
Ah right. It's also in a pair in another book with what you said.
Two places! : )
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:05 PM
I've got it paired with the Adventures of Tom Bombadil, I think.
VardaYesterday at 5:05 PM
The Tolkien Reader also includes Tom Bombadil. Maybe you're thinking
of that one?
In the Book of Lost Tales, the early concept of dragons was linked
to industry, as they were mechanical.
They carried orcs inside with balrogs riding outside.
They stacked themselves to make a way over the wall.
of Gondolin
In later stories, they were organic, bred up by Morgoth and Sauron.
I think Sauron did the work and Morgoth just told him to , but
that's speculation.
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:07 PM
No, I'm pretty sure the book I have contains both Tom Bombadil and
Farmer Giles of Ham.
VardaYesterday at 5:08 PM
Cool. So we have another title to look for.
Then there were dragons we know lived in the mountains up north of
Mirkwood, the ones that Smaug left behind.
So we had quite a few dragons.
We have reached the hour (slightly past). Did anyone have any
closing thoughts or other Tolkien-related comments or links right
quick?
the hammer bounces out striking sparks, trying to look fearsome

the hammerpad giggles because it tickled

After-meeting!
Free chat. It can even be about dragons. : )
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:12 PM
I've considered dragon-finding as a third arc for our RP, to get rid
of that ring we're up against
VardaYesterday at 5:13 PM
hah
That could be lethal to our little party.
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:13 PM
Well, there's the goat bait option!
VardaYesterday at 5:13 PM
True! Hey, it kind of worked in Jurassic Park.
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:13 PM
hehe
Hiding small round objects inside food tends to work on cats as
well.
VardaYesterday at 5:14 PM
Aye
AnarionYesterday at 5:14 PM
Dragons do tend to be depicted as giant cats in fiction at large
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:15 PM
As did Sauron, once
But I've never caught our cat sleeping on a pile of gold.
VardaYesterday at 5:15 PM
At one time in the writing, Glaurung was going to be a form of
Sauron, but it was canned pretty quickly.
First, you need a pile of gold
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:16 PM
Well, he's supposed to gather that himself.
He's not that big, should be doable.
VardaYesterday at 5:16 PM
A cat? They have humans to handle such chores.
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:18 PM
Cats don't need as large a bed as a dragon.
ArienValarYesterday at 5:18 PM
i just looked up which edition i have of Farmer giles of Ham and the
one i have is actually a very nicely Illustrated Harper/
Collins edition from 2000 .. it has the officially published version
of the story in it and the manuscript version ^
VardaYesterday at 5:20 PM
I have a grundgy 1966 paperback Tolkien Reader. : )
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:20 PM
I got my copy a few years ago from a WoW friend who found it in a
bookstore where she worked
Brought it with her from England.
VardaYesterday at 5:21 PM
The pair is in a 1967 paperback, only a little less grungy
Nice, it was well-traveled.
ArienValarYesterday at 5:22 PM
And The Adventures of Tom Bombadul (with other exerpts
from the Red B ook) is from 1975 by the looks of it and has also
illustrations in it from a Miss Pauline Bayes from George Allen
& Unwin LTD
Pauline Baynes .. sorry forgot the n there
Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:24 PM
Mine is indeed a grubby little paperback from a second-hand
bookstore, 1979 print from what I can tell, and indeed has both
Giles and Tom
VardaYesterday at 5:25 PM
Main thing is that we can read them! Yay! Having a nice copy,
though, can make the reading even more pleasant.
Print still is more comfortable for the eyes than a monitor, and
better before trying to sleep, even grubby. : )

Flashgaming:
This week on Kongregate was musically themed, with two of the three
games I've chosen being musical in nature. I'm pretty sure I've

obstacles and adding more birds to your flock. Unlock achievements
and get upgrades to make it easier, though some of them still take a
bit of luck and effort

One second
I'd like to extend congratulations to Nar
for being the rapier unit commander at the Pennsic War. : )
That was it. : )
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsic_War
Pennsic War
The Pennsic War is an annual American medieval
camping event held by the Society for Creative Anachronism—a "war"
between two large regional SCA groups: the Kingdom of the East and
the Middle Kingdom.
It is the single largest annual SCA event, with
more than 10,000 people a...

Heroes of the Storm:
4 levels gained, up to 361. D.Va to 7, and Sylvanas, Kharazim and
Li-Ming all to 14. Since I level my active heroes to 15 at which
point I put in a new one of the same role, I might have a lot of
replacing to do soon
Had my first match (brawl) with Orphea, a new-ish hero. Interesting
hero, lot of damage, but all on some delay, which makes it rather
difficult to actually hit things with it.

Oh, and also for Storm, a new rotation in mounts for gold... ended
up spending 30000 gold in one go on 3 sawblade mounts, looking
pretty nice
Hearthstone:
More catch-up on the classes that were still near halfway, now
they're all a third or less away from next level. Looking pretty
even again, onward to the next step.
Brawl's another advanced arena, so I did not bother with that. I
did, however, get an event quest done for the new expansion launch,
with some new packs as well as a legendary quest for shaman.

Raiding: Completed Eternal Palace on normal! Azshara downed for the
first time. Also for the second time - we cleared the entire normal
raid in one evening today. Safe to say that with our constantly
increasing gear and essences, we've really got normal under control.

Heroic difficulty still a bit harsh though, but we're making
progress on Ashvane
Oh, ehr, from raiding onwards, that's WoW
Weekly this week is timewalking, going quite well, essences really
making a difference. Mythic keystone also going well, with the
healing rank 2 essence from there. From here on keystone level
doesn't really matter, as long as I keep getting items from the
weekly chest for the rank 3 essences. Higher is still better for
that, but it feels a bit less strict.
Other than that, I've done a lot of stuff I had on my to-do list,
but mostly smaller stuff
I finished getting those elite dinosaurs for the achievement, after
checking daily for a few days until one was up, which I could then
kill to spawn the others.
I went truffle hunting in Stormsong Valley, after getting a pig nose
from a treasure chest, which allowed me to buy more pig noses for
the more than 200 quillboar quills I'd gathered up doing normal
questing there. Using said pig nose, you can find truffles of
various kinds among the trees of the zone.
In doing so, I got both relevant achievements: The one for having
all 4 truffle buffs up at once, and the one for finding a sporonite
bomb among the truffles and using it on the Lichen King rare mob.
You need to be careful for that, making sure to enter the cave and
engage the mob before you use it.
You really don't want to mess that up and have to find another bomb,
because they're really rare
And another achievement in Stormsong gotten: finding a Luncheon item
in a house in Brennadam and opening it at a special picnic place on
top of a peak elsewhere in the valley.
Also requires a few conditions like making sure you're standing and
not mounted, but like the sporonite one, I got it in one try.
And an achievement in Vol'dun too, getting all the rare mobs. I got
them all through world quests, which is a bit odd, since in the Kul
Tiras zones there are some rares in each zones which come without
world quests, but apparently that's not the case in at least one
Zandalar zone. We'll see what happens to the other two as well!
Another thing I got among the smaller goals was a new pet! Francois
the chicken, which you can only get if you have over 1 million gold
in your bags. You don't need to spend it, but you do need to have
it, because the little posh chicken only likes rich people
But after showing him my money, he gave me a golden egg which
hatched another Francois. Not sure how that works!
And finally, I got my leatherworking up to 150, while also unlocking
all the patch 8.0 patterns I hadn't yet discovered. Patch 8.2 came
with a bunch of new patterns and a skill increase to 175, but I'm
not going for that quite yet!
So yes, making good progress, and a whole bunch of other small
things to do in the next few weeks. Including some new pets, a toy,
and maybe even a cosmetic secret belt, but we'll see how far we get!

And that's my report for the week!
