Topic:
Paths of the Dead, that we were just seeing pictures of, was treated
differently in the movies than the books. Can you think of any
differences? I'm trying to think why they even made a number of the
changes, can see why for a few.
After-meeting:
Ar-Pharazon: gaming news including flashgaming reviews.

Before-meeting
You have just entered room "valarguildmeetingplace."
perseid28 has entered the room.
AriehnV has entered the room.
VardaValar1 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Arien, Phar, and Lenwe :-)
ArPharazonV: Aiya Lenwe, Arien and Varda!
VardaValar1: Trying to put up some neat stuff for you to enjoy. Almost got it up!
ArPharazonV: Yay!
perseid28: Aiya, all!
VardaValar1: Hey, it worked. :-)
VardaValar1: Aiya Lenwe :-)
VardaValar1: *puff puff*
VardaValar1: Inviiting now. Er, did Arien already start?
AriehnV: Aiya Varda :-)
AriehnV: no , not yet
PallandoValar has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Alrighty :-)
VardaValar1: Aiya Pallando!
AriehnV: but i was contemplating it not knowing whether you 'd turn up or not
AriehnV: aiya Pallando :-)
VardaValar1: Sorry, almost came in crazy early but wound up a bit late. :-(
VardaValar1: That's everyone I see in AIM.
VardaValar1: Is anyone in a game where they can tell others it's that time of day? :-)
VardaValar1: Guess I'd better fire up LotRO and see if it overloads the computer, hah.
perseid28: I can log in quick
VardaValar1: Going in now
VardaValar1: Should be ok
ArPharazonV: Only one I can tell is Arien, and she's already here!
VardaValar1: You're just really fast. ^^
ArPharazonV: And apparently I just missed Fladrif logging out...
VardaValar1: awwww
VardaValar1: Hi to Fladrif :-)
VardaValar1: Any chance of Helm or Aragorn being on this late?
VardaValar1: *tum te tum* loading screen
VardaValar1: Sauron just came in and said Hi!
ArPharazonV: Aiya Sauron!
VardaValar1: If I crash, be patient. Ton of stuff up.
AriehnV: Aiya Sauron =-O
AriehnV: nah Helm wont be on this late and he has had some health trouble with his asthma
VardaValar1: Ugh. Good luck to him.
VardaValar1: Cirdan is on, not able to reply as he's fighting for his life in the Ettenmoors at the moment.
VardaValar1: Just missed Gorlim, Falco, and Dis
VardaValar1: Nar two hours ago
ArPharazonV: Good luck to Cirdan!
ArPharazonV: Should've stuck to the Havens perhaps.
VardaValar1: Has to keep the Havens safe.
VardaValar1: I wonder how often they had to fend off attacks? That's an
area we don't hear much about during the War of the Ring, just after.
VardaValar1: Sil had some stuff about the place, but just barely.
ArPharazonV: The area to the east was mostly safe. Rangers took care of
most of that. If something came from Angmar they would've had to go
really northwards.
ArPharazonV: South, wildmen from Saruman, etc, might be more difficult.
VardaValar1: Interesting that Legolas and Gimli used their own boat
instead of going overland. Bet Gimli wasn't happy with either horse or
boat.
VardaValar1: True, until the Rangers left.
AriehnV: he kind of got used to riding though wasnt it?
AriehnV: had to , i guess ^^
ArPharazonV: Maybe a smaller horse for him.
VardaValar1: Usually with someone. Legolas or Eomer.
ArPharazonV: Smaller boat? Somehow that doesn't seem more comforting.
VardaValar1: Aye, a sturdy mountain pony.
VardaValar1: Just had a request for LotRO steed pages, might as well give them here for everyone:
VardaValar1: And if you know another, feel free to link.
VardaValar1: http://lotrosteeds.com/index.html
VardaValar1: http://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Mounts
ArPharazonV: *hums the My Little Pony song while looking at horses*
VardaValar1: http://www.danania.net/
VardaValar1: hehe
VardaValar1: Smaller characters get the pony version of the steeds, so that fits.
VardaValar1: https://cosmeticlotro.wordpress.com/category/mounts/
VardaValar1: Enjoy :-)

VardaValar1: Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!
VardaValar1: Membership:
VardaValar1: Lots of happy holiday stuff in real life and in all our games. :-)
VardaValar1: Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and generally Happy Holidays to everyone! Be happy!
VardaValar1: Then we'll talk about something like the Paths of the Dead. ;-)
VardaValar1: Been turning off world chats in games to avoid Star Wars
spoilers, but heard it's quite good and we should all go see it first
chance.
VardaValar1: Anyone have membership news?
ArPharazonV: Merry Christmas!
ArPharazonV: Or, let's be a bit more general...
ArPharazonV: Happy Plethora of Winter Solstice Celebrations!
VardaValar1: The very model of generalness. :-)
VardaValar1: So many, aye. :-)
VardaValar1: Looks as if Fangorn and Merry may get off for Christmas and be here at my house. :-) Very happy.
ArPharazonV: Always fun.
VardaValar1: Web:
VardaValar1: Just barely up for your enjoyment, some new pics from the Bohemian Weasel, and a re-working of a page, possibly not finished reworking but pretty close.
VardaValar1: You get to hear it here first!
VardaValar1: "Paths" Éomer - ‘The horses grow nervous in the shadow of the mountain. 'None who venture there ever return.'
VardaValar1: "The way is shut." Legolas - The way is shut. It was made by those who were dead, and the dead keep it
VardaValar1: Looking at those, it seemed like a good idea to revamp the
art page for Paths of the Dead to collect all those in one spot. Be
nice to attach for an Events link for the Encyclopedia
VardaValar1: So here's why I was late (apologize again)
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/art/gallery/BohemianWeasel/places/PathsoftheDead/PathsoftheDead.htm
VardaValar1: Total revamp, may not be quite done, but very close.
ArPharazonV: Hmm, looks good. Undead always tend to be rather inspiring, eh?
VardaValar1: Most are click to enlarge types of images.
ArPharazonV: Skulls everywhere and all that stuff.
VardaValar1: These were done over quite a period of time. And yes. :-)
VardaValar1: Since she uses movie shots for most of her inspiration, it
was a bit tricky for both her and me to keep this page reasonably canon.
scott92027 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: When it goes completely nuts, it will be marked as a movie image.
VardaValar1: Elladan! Aiya!
scott92027: Aiya :-)
scott92027: using Pidgin messenger. Seems to allow group invites for AOL
ArPharazonV: Aiya!
VardaValar1: Pidgin is a good one, safer than using AIM directly they say.
VardaValar1: We were just looking at the latest batch of pictures, both on a revamped page. Here's the link:
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/art/gallery/BohemianWeasel/places/PathsoftheDead/PathsoftheDead.htm
VardaValar1: We were also looking at LotRO horses but you're already familiar with them.
VardaValar1: But that's not all...
scott92027: I just reinstalled last night
VardaValar1: Marigold-V has her pics up too, which you may have seen if you check out the News.
VardaValar1: Hope it gave you a clean install and you can game with us again!
VardaValar1: Here's the new page for Marigold's art: The second pic is a sneak preview of a work in progress:
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/art/gallery/Marigold/caveMarigold.htm
VardaValar1: Some of you may remember Amillo-(Valar), now Elatan-(T).
VardaValar1: He still keeps contact with us, but was required by his
European server kinship to leave any other kins. So he's a Tolkien-only
member now.
VardaValar1: He put up a farewell to Snowbourn server movie that he made himself.
VardaValar1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XO_Q5hfAbwM&feature=youtu.be
VardaValar1: He used to do a lot for us. Did we already have this discussion last meeting?
ArPharazonV: Not sure. I know it's on the forum.
VardaValar1: Anyway, he posted the video on the forum, and we have a link on the News.
VardaValar1: Aye, thanks.
VardaValar1: He was a full Vala Honor on the Council, did a Membership
page for a while, did our first Art page and contributed a lot of art
(you can still see it), and
AriehnV: Aiya Eladan :-)
VardaValar1: still keeps up the Annals of Arda that mixes back and forth with our Tolkien Encyclopedia.
scott92027: Aiya
scott92027: :-)
scott92027: working on dinner and checking here
VardaValar1: Cool :-)
VardaValar1: He also did our Dark Age of Camelot page, as helped start
and keep up our branch there, before the group moved to Guild Wars 2
and LotRO.
VardaValar1: *that group
VardaValar1: He's always been a great help in problem-solving as we got to be an older group, spread out, and really large.
VardaValar1: We're not as large now, but we can fix that. ;-)
AriehnV: well I am getting "older" too *blushes*#
VardaValar1: There, shut down a ton of pages, less chance of crashing.
VardaValar1: Birthday? :-)
VardaValar1: One hopes so, as the guild started in 1997 in this incarnation. :-)
VardaValar1: We had a looser version before that, reformed into what we are now.
VardaValar1: On to
top
VardaValar1: Gaming News!
VardaValar1: LotRO:
VardaValar1: We've had a number of patches this week, but they don't take too long to load, fortunately.
VardaValar1: and the Yule Festival is on.
VardaValar1: http://www.lotro.com/en/yulefestival
VardaValar1: Since we were talking about steeds earlier, there's the new Yule horse. :-)
VardaValar1: WoW:
VardaValar1: If PvP is your thing, there's a
preview
up of what's planned for Legion.
VardaValar1: Speaking of Legion, the alpha is going to be coming down
on December 21st for the holidays and will be coming back in the new
year. Here's
the announcement.
VardaValar1: Winterveil is here, and with it everyone's favorite Smokywood Pastures brings us a Winterveil Carol. Read
Part 1
and
Part 2.
VardaValar1: See this week's
hotfixes.
VardaValar1: Diablo 3:
VardaValar1: (Bilbo and I were gaming there together just yesterday!)
VardaValar1: Season 4 is ending soon. If you have anything left undone, now is the time to wrap it up. See
the announcement
to know how long you have and when to expect Season 5.
VardaValar1: Check the updates to the patch 2.4
PTR patch notes. [Note: PTR means Public Test Server]
VardaValar1: Also, check out the preview blog on
Items and Sets
in Patch 2.4.
VardaValar1: StarCraft 2:
VardaValar1: Patch 3.1.0
is out, and with it comes a new commander for Co-Op missions:
Karax.
VardaValar1: Hearthstone:
VardaValar1: Coming December 16th:
Gift Exchange Tavern Brawl.
VardaValar1: Heroes of the Storm:
VardaValar1: There's a new patch out this week. See

VardaValar1: There's also two new blogs. One is on
matchmaking improvements
and the other on
updates to the replay and observer UI.
VardaValar1: EVE Online:
VardaValar1: Sauron's been playing there, that I know of. Presumably our afk Pallando. Maybe Arien?
VardaValar1: SWToR:
VardaValar1: Sauron's also been playing there. :-)
VardaValar1: Any other general gaming news left out?
AriehnV: I havent seen him for a while
VardaValar1: Who?
AriehnV: i ve been on and off SwoTR both on Dark and Light ^
AriehnV: Sauron and not seen him in Eve either
VardaValar1: He's on the Republic side right now. :-)
ArPharazonV: Well, I'll just add a few things
VardaValar1: and I've seen him playing EVE. :-)
VardaValar1: Fire away
ArPharazonV: Heroes of the Storm has another hero out, Lunara the druid.
ArPharazonV: And the game Cookie Clicker
which I mentioned some time ago, finally has the new update coming
after over a year, revamping and expanding it by quite a bit. Went into
beta today, should go live a few days later.
ArPharazonV: And that's the general gaming news from me.
VardaValar1: Just right for Christmas. :-)
VardaValar1: Thanks, Phar.
VardaValar1: Anyone else have any general additions? Sounds as if it's been tough to spot each other on EVE and SWTOR.
VardaValar1: Sauron says he's usually at work during the evening when
you come on. Maybe catch him on Monday, Wednesday, and weekends.
***
Varda Valar: Pardon, brb
Varda Valar: back
Varda Valar: Any
other business, additions, suggestions?
Varda Valar: Jokes? :-)
Varda
Valar: Feel free to offer your suggestions in a side window for the
Tolkien chat.
Arien V: uhm just for aftermeeting ^^^
scott92027: I just logged
out of SWTOR
Varda Valar: okie dokie
Varda Valar: Egad! Ebon Hawke?
scott92027: eh?
Varda Valar: That's our server,
Elladan.
ArPharazon-V (ArPharazonV) has left the room.
Varda Valar: for Valar
scott92027: No I'm on the PVP
one and I believe shadowlands
Varda Valar: uh oh. Phar seems to have
crashed. Rough on the transcript.
scott92027: haven't played in
years
Varda Valar: You mentioned having just logged off of SWTOR?
scott92027: yes
scott92027: first time I logged in years
VardaValar1:
ArPharazon-V (ArPharazonV) has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Maybe you can put a character in Ebon Hawke too? Say hi to the gang?
scott92027: sure could :-)
***
VardaValar1: Orome and his bunch moved to SWTOR pvp, not sure which server.
ArPharazonV: Hmm. I must have disconnected somehow.
AriehnV: I am guild master now as it seems

ArPharazonV: I'm guessing I missed a whoooole lot of speech.
VardaValar1: Celebrian and Elrond are on Jedi Covenant
VardaValar1: Tried to copy and give it to you
VardaValar1: failed send
ArPharazonV: Try it in smaller portions.
ArPharazonV: I meant in the room for the transcript >.>
ArPharazonV: Want *me* to copy it over?

ArPharazon-V (ArPharazonV) has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: There, now at least it's in the transcript.
VardaValar1: Messy, heh. Maybe I can clean it up during coding.
VardaValar1: Thanks. It puts a ton of spaces in it from tables when I try to copy it.
ArPharazonV: Hmm, I noticed.
ArPharazonV: And when I copy it from you, it goes like this :-)
VardaValar1: Each person's speech has it's own table.
VardaValar1: That one is easier to fix, but might leave it that way to let readers see what you're talking about. :-)
ArPharazonV: You could add a note.
VardaValar1: ok.
VardaValar1: On to
top
VardaValar1: Tolkien!
VardaValar1: Paths of the Dead, that we were just seeing pictures of.
VardaValar1: It was treated differently in the movies than the books.
VardaValar1: Can you think of any differences?
VardaValar1: I'm trying to think why they even made a number of the changes, can see why for a few.
ArPharazonV: It just wouldn't have been very visually appealing. In the
books it was all about a shadowy, almost invisible presence felt by
those going through, with the dead following them.
ArPharazonV: So in the movies they made things a bit more visually direct.
VardaValar1: The movie did manage to give them an indistinct, ghostly look, That seemed to translate ok.
VardaValar1: Unless they had direct interaction.
VardaValar1: We should be able to list a lot of differences. :-)
ArPharazonV: There's also that little thing about having a sizeable
company going through with Aragorn in the books, while in the movie
he's just got the elf and the dwarf.
VardaValar1: Six people in the room. Anyone active, please type Gandalf.
VardaValar1: Gandalf
ArPharazonV: Gandalf
VardaValar1: True
ArPharazonV: Gotta cut down the amount of named, distinct characters after all.
scott92027: Gandalf
scott92027: cooking
VardaValar1: Aragorn had the whole Grey Company and horses, as well as Legolas and Gimli.
VardaValar1: They had earlier dropped most of the mention of his being
the leader of the Northern Rangers. Not sure it can even be guessed
from the movies.
VardaValar1: At least they showed Faramir as leading the Southern Rangers.
scott92027: did those 2 burgs leave the kinship, Varda?
scott92027: can't remember their names
scott92027: both female.
ArPharazonV: Can't imagine going into the movie-version with horses.
scott92027: oops sorry to interrupt
VardaValar1: Belathriel fka Findis-(V) left the kin.
VardaValar1: Indis-V died.
scott92027: No Kande
scott92027: Kandeburg and forgot the other
VardaValar1: Embarrasing, but I don't remember the Kandeburg name.
VardaValar1: Does it come up on a friend list?
scott92027: haha I just logged out
scott92027: checking on dinner
VardaValar1: Ioreth moved some of her characters out to join music kins, but didn't quit.
AriehnV: Gandalf
VardaValar1: Topic: differences in the Paths of the Dead between the
movie and book versions, and speculation on why the differences.
VardaValar1: Cutting the number of characters they have to show,
especially ones not continuiing through the whole show such as the
Northern Ranges.
VardaValar1: Making the Oathbreakers more visually noticeable for a visual medium.
VardaValar1: Can't think of an excuse for the skull landslide.
VardaValar1: In the books, the Oathbreakers follow Aragorn out of the mountain and go to the Stone of Erech.
ArPharazonV: Because there has to be a dangerous situation?
VardaValar1: In LotRO, you can also go to the Stone of Erech (side note).
scott92027: Got my answer. She's on friends but not kin list
ArPharazonV: Any ghosts lingering?
VardaValar1: And they didn't show the high speed run to stop the
Corsairs, that terrified the locals and got Aragorn called the King of
the Dead, did they?
scott92027: Dinner's ready. Namarie, everyone! Good to see you all again (and sorry for the interruptions)
VardaValar1: Namarie! And I wanted to know, thanks
scott92027: :-)
scott92027 has left the room.
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
VardaValar1: In the books, the Corsair story is told about more, although not in linear order.
VardaValar1: Legolas believed that Galadriel sent him a foreseeing of his death there, but he went anyway.
VardaValar1: The ghosts terrified the Corsairs off of their ships, the locals took over the ships and helped crew them.
ArPharazonV: Makes a bit more sense than real boats being crewed by ghosts.
VardaValar1: and Aragorn, glad to have the Corsair menace ended and to have the ships, released the Oathbreakers.
VardaValar1: The locals that helped were sailors, made sense.
VardaValar1: The ghosts didn't have the ability to do physical damage in the books. They worked by fear.
VardaValar1: In the movie, they seem to have ridden the boats to Minas Tirith and caused great physical damage.
VardaValar1: Made one wonder why the Rohirrim should be in the story.
VardaValar1: Who needs them? :-)
VardaValar1: Backup plan, maybe.
ArPharazonV: Well, they were kinda late :-)
VardaValar1: And if they were going to do that, why not take them to the Black Gate?
VardaValar1: True.
ArPharazonV: Even the undead weren't suicidal enough to go to the black gate.
VardaValar1: They had once worshipped Sauron. It was pushing their
loyalty to go to Minas Tirith where they went directly against his
forces instead of just the Corsairs.
VardaValar1: They might have gone wholly over to Sauron at the Black Gate.
VardaValar1: Aragorn was being careful, possibly, by dropping them after the Corsairs.
VardaValar1: The book does not say, except that they had done all he most needed of them.
VardaValar1: Any further comment?
VardaValar1: Any further business, etc/
VardaValar1: ?
VardaValar1: *raises the newest hammer*
ArPharazonV: Sorry, kinda busy. Turns out my WoW account expired just now...
ArPharazonV: Anyway
VardaValar1: oops
ArPharazonV: I'd say Aragorn might've thought that the local Gondorians would not like being stuck on ships with ghosts :-)
VardaValar1: The fear might drive off the Gondorians as well as the Corsairs? Makes sense.
VardaValar1: They were certainly afraid of the ghosts on their ride.
ArPharazonV: I'm still here, right? You never used the hammer ;-)
VardaValar1: *the hammer disintegrates into sparkles of silver dust, landing with a sound of bells*
ArPharazonV: Right.
top
VardaValar1: After-meeting:
ArPharazonV: So Christmassy!
VardaValar1: :-)
ArPharazonV: There, I'm back in WoW.. I'm trying to build boats at 2 hour intervals, so it helps if I can get in ;-)
VardaValar1: For sure :-)
VardaValar1: Grats for making it back in
ArPharazonV: thanks
AriehnV has left the room.
AriehnV has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: Okay, personal gaming news!
ArPharazonV: It's been rather slow in the flashgames,
this past week. I've only got one new game to link, which is a
christmas platformer where you have a certain time limit to get through
as many levels as you can. Pretty short, though you can spend a lot of
time learning shortcuts etc.
ArPharazonV: http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/santa_run_3 is the one
VardaValar1: Thanks
ArPharazonV: But I will repeat that Cookie Clicker (also a flashgame as
far as I know) is getting an update, so I'll link it here at http://orteil.dashnet.org/cookieclicker/
ArPharazonV: For blizzard games...
ArPharazonV: I haven't done any D3 or SCII. Been making plans for a few attempts at co-op with someone in WoW, but haven't been able to make much time for it.
ArPharazonV: I don't have anything left that I want to do in D3
season, but I have been making plans for season 5, and we'll see if I
go further than chapter 4 in that one. Depends on the rewards.
ArPharazonV: Hearthstone: Just
getting some xp around. Managed the new brawl for winter veil, which is
quite difficult and random, but after I won a match I can now use the
new card back :-)
ArPharazonV: Heroes of the Storm: Got 2 heroes this week!
ArPharazonV: Needed a Starcraft Support hero, so I bought myself a
Tassadar. That was right after last week's meeting, I believe.
ArPharazonV: Seems quite fun, especially if you spec him for a bit more damage :-)
ArPharazonV: And I also got the newest hero added, Lunara. Quite
fragile and difficult to play, relies on poking stuff, poisoning stuff
and then running away before someone else can fight back. Can be fun if
you're experienced enough.
ArPharazonV: I'm sure I'll get there.
ArPharazonV: She moves by bouncing though, so some people have already
reported motion-sickness. So good luck with that if you give it a try.
ArPharazonV: WoW!
ArPharazonV: Still not having much luck with killing heroic Archimonde
for the second time. Starting to think the first time was just a fluke
;-)
ArPharazonV: Been having fun with the new winter veil dailies, and decorating the garrison with stuff from the vendor.
ArPharazonV: Lots and lots of christmas trees everywhere.
ArPharazonV: I also got a murloc submarine in addition to last week's
murloc destroyer, and am currently trying to construct a human-crewed
carrier, which should help with the rare naval mission currently
available to me.
ArPharazonV: I have 2 factions in Tanaan at exalted now, which means I
can skip most of the daily quests. Only saberstalkers is left, but
getting exalted with that can wait. At least it's a weekly guaranteed
4000 if you do the weekly quest.
ArPharazonV: Also gave the Tanaan legendary pets a try, but I needed to
level a few more pets of my own for that, notably Chrominius. Got him
at level 25 now, so I'll try them again tomorrow.
ArPharazonV: And yeah, I think that's it for this week! Next week, I might have a bunch of new pets to report :-)
VardaValar1: Fun :-)
ArPharazonV: Oh, one more thing, I've also contacted a group to boost
me through Challenge Modes: Gold. It can be very difficult to find a
group that's up for it, and after months of tries we only got silver in
the Pandaria expansion. And since I have the gold to pay for it, I
think it's better this way.
