Before-meeting:
You have just entered room "valarguildmeetingplace."
VardaValar1 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya. Still nearly half an hour, feel free to continue with killage or whatever. : )
ArPharazonV: Cooking, actually. Working on the Ways!
ArPharazonV: But I need 65 carrots now, so probably gonna end planting my farm full of em and then logging.
ArPharazonV: *end up
VardaValar1: mmmm carrots
ArPharazonV: Aww, total count gets me 61.
ArPharazonV: Gotta wait a day for 4 carrots.
VardaValar1: ouch, so close
ArPharazonV: Aaand one of them's bursting, which means I can harvest immediately. Now that's lucky.
VardaValar1: yay!
ArPharazonV: Allright, I'm out of WoW.
VardaValar1: I just left LotRO.
VardaValar1: Found a fun YouTube of the Cat and the Moon, but it runs past where it should have cut off:
VardaValar1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=RX--cEl3BWw
VardaValar1: Makes a good party. : )
ArPharazonV: :-)
Eonwe Valar has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: Heya.
ArPharazonV: Aiya!
VardaValar1: Eonwe! Good to see your computer let you in. :-)
VardaValar1: This isn't a repaired/new version by any chance?
Eonwe Valar: Nope, still borrowing.
VardaValar1: Glad you could!
VardaValar1: Let's just let the others catch up after they show up. : )

VardaValar1: Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!
VardaValar1: Membership:
VardaValar1: Does anyone have any membership news?
ArPharazonV: I've got a new dvd drive!
ArPharazonV: Now I can use dvds and cdroms again, and reinstall stuff.
ArPharazonV: Nothing special otherwise.
VardaValar1: Wonderful, Phar :-)

VardaValar1: Web:
VardaValar1: DeepGroover-(T) sent in two models for us: a werewolf and a vampire:
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/art/gallery/DeepGroover/TeenageWerewolf/TeenageWerewolf.htm
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/art/gallery/DeepGroover/Vampire/Vampire.htm
VardaValar1: Looks as if we have a batch of poetry heading our way. We'll see, but it looks promising.
Iryenth has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Gilraen : )
VardaValar1: Any other web news?
top
VardaValar1: Gaming:
VardaValar1: Miscellaneous gaming might be a way to refer to anything other than WoW and LotRO? : )
VardaValar1: So has anyone tried anything outside our two main MMORPG's this past week?
ArPharazonV: Played a few more flashgames, played a bit of the Touhou series which I'd copied back to the main partition I use for gaming...
ArPharazonV: and have now reinstalled Starcraft II and Rayman: Origins, both of which I tested for a few minutes to see if they worked and the quality of play and graphics.
ArPharazonV: And I can now happily say that I can for the first time,
play Rayman: Origins without invisible platforms and the like ;-)
VardaValar1: Look good on the new dvd player?
VardaValar1: o good!
ArPharazonV: Yah, but the main upgrade was of course the graphics card,
but I couldn't test it until I'd reinstalled with a new dvd player.
VardaValar1: Computer/DVD player. ;-)
ArPharazonV: Of course I've not played it for so long that I'm totally
out of it and probably will have to start all over again anyway.
VardaValar1: O the horror. As if you had a new game!
VardaValar1: kind of.
ArPharazonV: Anyway, that's it for me! I'll probably be reinstalling and testing more games over the next few weeks.
ArPharazonV: hehe.
VardaValar1: Sounds like a fun few weeks coming up. : )
VardaValar1: WoW:
VardaValar1: Any WoW news from the WoW folks?
ArPharazonV: Or a very frustrating one to get everything working ;-)
VardaValar1: That too.
Eonwe Valar: Nothing from me on WoW.
VardaValar1: I need to drop by the Horde side before Gilbrennil loses her job. : )
ArPharazonV: Doing well in WoW now myself, started cooking the Ways,
have nearly everything in Pandaria up to exalted, and even started pet
battling. I'm almost caught up with everything before 5.1... and not a
moment too soon, since 5.2 will come in a few weeks, or so we think.
ArPharazonV: So I'm still behind on stuff, but maybe catching up.
VardaValar1: Nice
VardaValar1: I started the pet battles a while back. Adds something new all over the landscape.
VardaValar1: But wasn't good enough to run the battles in the new Pandaria area.
ArPharazonV: Oh, I'm also still in the lower level areas. But I've been
focusing on getting rare quality pets, so I'm happy even if they are
low level.
ArPharazonV: Got 10 of em last night.
VardaValar1: Cool : )
VardaValar1: That's a lot!
VardaValar1: Do we know an upper limit on the pet number?
ArPharazonV: Wowhead zonemaps and spawnlocations on the side, gotta tackle these things systematically :-)
VardaValar1: Good idea.
ArPharazonV: You can get 650 pets total, I think. And we did some math
on the total different pets around and came to something around... 500,
so you have room for duplicates.
VardaValar1: Should we bug you for an url for the transcript? They can Google it of course.
VardaValar1: wow - must have a lot of server space.
ArPharazonV: Oh, I use different pages for every pet.
VardaValar1: 500 per person and there's an awful lot of people.
VardaValar1: On to
VardaValar1: LotRO:
ArPharazonV: Look up the names of the pets on www.wowhead.com and you'll get a map of their appearances as well as comments usually relating to strategies for finding or grinding them.
ArPharazonV: not just a matter of patrolling over all the spawnspots,
some of them require you to kill other things to get a better spawnrate.
ArPharazonV: Allright, go ahead :-)
VardaValar1: We've been heavily into doing Barad Guldur runs and starting into the new three mans. Symbols, crystals, and gold items along with marks and seals as the goal.
VardaValar1: Thanks, Phar. Good info.
VardaValar1: We have contacts with several channels that have different
groups of kins, giving us a way to game in large groups nearly all the
time if we can stand it.
VardaValar1: It also is helping us make contact with more folks, always a plus.
AriehnV has entered the room.
AriehnV: aiya folks
ArPharazonV: Aiya Arien!
VardaValar1: Aiya Arien : )
VardaValar1: We're in gaming news, if you have anything you'd like to mention?
AriehnV: am I missing something :-)?
fladrifv has entered the room.
fladrifv: Aiya
ArPharazonV: Aiya!
VardaValar1: Nearly 30 minutes into the meeting, so... maybe. : )
VardaValar1: Aiya Fladrif!
AriehnV: no nothing really apart from the fact that i am a wee bit bored with wow ^^
VardaValar1: Come come to LotRO...
VardaValar1: /duck
ArPharazonV: We had just been talking about the fun of battle pet capturing, so maybe that's something to do if you're bored :-)
VardaValar1: Reminds me. Irmo and Miriel are back in LotRO some. : )
AriehnV: nice :-)
AriehnV: i ve been missing both
VardaValar1: Same.
VardaValar1: We seem to have an early morning crew, coming in before work during coffee, too.
AriehnV: yip , i am both .. capturing pets and playing LotrO ;-)
VardaValar1: Fladrif, any news on the Chess front or Phar's computer or other?
fladrifv: Im just back fro msweden
VardaValar1: Welcome home!
fladrifv: by car so im a bit entish this meeting was a 15h drive
VardaValar1: Wow. Amazing you even turned on your computer.
AriehnV: indeed
VardaValar1: We'd better pour him some water and Miracle Gro.
AriehnV: *sends the ent some energizing sunwarmth*
top
VardaValar1: Tolkien:
VardaValar1: Wargs have been on my mind since the movie, and due to much killage of them recently in LotRO.
VardaValar1: The part in the movie where the dwarves are treed is from
the Hobbit book, chapter 6, "Out of the Frying Pan into the Fire"
VardaValar1: There's actually a heroic rescue by Dori of Bilbo that the movie left out.
VardaValar1: Bilbo couldn't climb the trees because he was too short to
reach the bottom branches, or even a hand extended from one.
VardaValar1: The wargs were coming, yet Dori climbed down out of the
tree and let Bilbo climb up on his back to reach the branch.
VardaValar1: Hundreds of warg eyes were on them, and Dori barely made it into the tree himself.
VardaValar1: Could have been a worthy movie moment?
ArPharazonV: I would've expected to see that in the movie, sure. It's
one of those exciting near-death moments that'd fit nicely on the big
screen.
VardaValar1: Just after that part (if you have your book handy), a
great wolf talks in their language to the other wargs (evil wolves).
VardaValar1: Aye : )
VardaValar1: Gandalf understands the language.
VardaValar1: These aren't ordinary wolves, but a group of non-humanoid intelligences.
VardaValar1: Sauron probably had a hand in their making, as he did in so many evil creatures.
ArPharazonV: Is there consistency with the wargs in the LotR movie? Do they look the same?
VardaValar1: Somehow they gained this extra intelligence, and were big enough to be ridden fast over long distances.
VardaValar1: They seem to have done better with the Hobbit wargs. Anyone else have an opinion on the comparison?
ArPharazonV: Not seen The Hobbit (yet) so I've no idea what they look like, just curious :-)
ArPharazonV: I do remember their appearance in LotR though.
VardaValar1: Might look at this url with the sound off, since there's an intrusive ad on the top, but nice pics:
VardaValar1: http://geektyrant.com/news/2012/11/9/new-pics-from-the-hobbit-featuring-wargs.html
AriehnV: that scene was very excitting in the movie and more thrilling
than in the book with trees falling across a cliff edge and so on ...
it was not very booklike at all
ArPharazonV: Yeah, those look a lot more wolf-like than Saruman's wargs. I guess he bred them a bit further.
VardaValar1: This one doesn't hit over the head with ads:
AriehnV: very good stunts and action there really , but not book close ;-)
VardaValar1: http://themovieblog.com/2012/check-out-the-wargs-from-the-hobbit/
VardaValar1: Maybe they were made to look more like wolves since this is before the LotR, aye.
VardaValar1: In the book, it's chapter 6 "Out of the Frying Pan into the Fire".
VardaValar1: If you have a book handy, we can see what that actually says.
VardaValar1: We have the daring rescue of Bilbo by Dori.
ArPharazonV: Looking at wargs on google images, lotr wargs seem to have
bigger, rounder heads and are maybe shaped more like.. hyenas?
VardaValar1: Then the great wolf has a conference with the other
wolves. Gandalf understands the language, but Bilbo only understands
the unpleasant emotions behind it.
VardaValar1: Heh, seems like a hyena shape would be harder to saddle. Upgrades aren't always better. ^^
VardaValar1: Goblins preferred not to leave their mountains unless driven out or marching to war.
VardaValar1: Sometimes they went on raids for food and slaves.
VardaValar1: When they did, they got the Wargs (capitalized) to help them and sometimes rode them.
VardaValar1: They shared plunder.
VardaValar1: The Wargs that treed the dwarves had been coming to meet the goblins for one such raid, but the goblins were late.
VardaValar1: Probably due to the death of the Great Goblin.
VardaValar1: The raid planned for that day was to attack humans who had
banded together into a strong group the Wargs couldn't handle, at least
by day.
VardaValar1: They were going to hit villages near the mountains and it would have been bad.
VardaValar1: So our heroes unintentionally save a lot of villagers that night. : )
fladrifv: *note from the soil underneath the roots to the groupe* I fear the friendlz rooted ent above me has fallen asleep
VardaValar1: The dwarves were right at the meeting place!
fladrifv: y=z
VardaValar1: Fladrif, please feel free to rest. That was a really long drive!
ArPharazonV: Got the wrong keyboard, eh?
VardaValar1: The transcript will be handy. : )
ArPharazonV: I think there's keyboards that have y and z switched.
Eonwe Valar: f(x) = ay^2 +by + c ? :}
fladrifv: germans do
AriehnV: aye the us keyboard has that switched round and the german .. i forgot that ^^
fladrifv: been for a week on a swedish one hence the errors
fladrifv: sneaks out of the meeting heading for a rest Namarie :-)
VardaValar1: The Wargs thought the dwarves were spies from the humans
and would take word back to the villages, wrecking the easy raid
planned.
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
VardaValar1: Namarie!
AriehnV: sleep well Enti :-)
Eonwe Valar: Sleep well Fladrif :}
ArPharazonV: So do Ents sleep standing up?
VardaValar1: Aye. : )
AriehnV: where do you like to stand Flad?
ArPharazonV: Could be troublesome for Flad.
VardaValar1: But seems like they also had beds, at least didn't Fangorn have one?
VardaValar1: Feel free to look that up. : )
VardaValar1: Maybe he can lean against a grove.
ArPharazonV: Well, Ents aren't exactly rooted into the ground, so theoretically they can just lie down.
ArPharazonV: Might be harder to stand up again.
VardaValar1: Maybe if the bed is high enough, the ent can roll off it to a standing position?
ArPharazonV: That could work.
VardaValar1: Anyway, Gandalf realized from what the Wargs were saying
that they were in real trouble, couldn't just wait out the Wargs.
VardaValar1: So he took pinecones and lit them on fire.
fladrifv has left the room.
VardaValar1: He threw them at the Wargs.
VardaValar1: The fire was not normal. Hey, it's Gandalf!
ArPharazonV: First ancestors of the molotov cocktail.
VardaValar1: hehe
VardaValar1: The fire would stick to the coat.
VardaValar1: When the Warg rolled to put it out (smart), the fire would get all over them.
VardaValar1: So most had to rush away to try to douse it in a body of water.
VardaValar1: The fire had colors, sparks, and generally was wild-looking stuff.
ArPharazonV: Gandalf's signature? :-)
VardaValar1: All the excitement caught the attention of the Lord of the Eagles.
VardaValar1: He took two of his guards and went to investigate.
VardaValar1: Seeing what was happening, he called many more eagles.
VardaValar1: The Lord of the Eagles had been on the lookout for goblin
mischief, ready to attack, so this was right up his alley.
VardaValar1: The night's raid might not have gone as smoothly as the Wargs had hoped, since we know this.
VardaValar1: Not all the Wargs had left the trees.
VardaValar1: Some were guards that stayed and were furious, hurting from the burning.
VardaValar1: Goblins also heard the excitement and thought the woodmen were attacking, so they came ready to fight.
VardaValar1: Gobilins weren't afraid of fire and laughed at the Wargs' predicament.
ArPharazonV: Well that wasn't very nice.
VardaValar1: They're...goblins. :-)
ArPharazonV: Yeah, but their own allies!
VardaValar1: Then the goblins collected the Wargs together in a pack.
VardaValar1: Others beat and stamped out the fire except by the dwarves' trees, where they piled dead brush.
VardaValar1: Flames, heat, and smoke were a terrible combination.
VardaValar1: The goblins danced and sang around them as if at a big bonfire party.
VardaValar1: Gandalf was not like Gandalf the White, not as powerful. But he wasn't going out without fighting.
VardaValar1: He went to the top of his tree, and "sudden splendor flashed from his wand like lightning"
VardaValar1: He was about to jump down into the goblins and their spears.
VardaValar1: He would have killed many, maybe enough for the dwarves to escape, but would have died too (been disembodied).
VardaValar1: The Lord of the Eagles swept in, grabbed him, and flew off with him.
VardaValar1: The eagles and goblins fought, rather one-sided.
VardaValar1: The goblins tried to throw their spears at the eagles, the eagles came at them with talons.
VardaValar1: That kept the goblins back while other eagles collected the dwarves and Bilbo.
VardaValar1: They would have missed Bilbo, but
VardaValar1: Bilbo grabbed our old friend Dori's legs as an eagle hauled him off.
ArPharazonV: True burglar, always going unnoticed.
VardaValar1: hehe
ArPharazonV: I wonder what would've happened if they'd missed him, back
at the eyrie. "You missed him? How could you not have seen him? He was
almost as tall as the dwarves!"
VardaValar1: They went a long way and both Bilbo and Dori were pretty miserable, before being taken to an eagle's eyrie.
VardaValar1: Gandalf might have had roast chicken?
ArPharazonV: Possibly!
VardaValar1: Dori and Bilbo only got a short rest, then an eagle
messenger said for the other eagles to bring their prisoners to the
Great Shelf to the Lord of the Eagles.
VardaValar1: The Lord of the Eagles and Gandalf knew each other and were talking when Bilbo arrived on the Great Shelf.
VardaValar1: Gandalf had previously healed the Lord of the Eagles from
an arrow wound. "Prisoners" meant the prisoners of the goblins and
Wargs.
VardaValar1: The eagles would not carry them to a village of men
because the men would shoot at them, thinking they were after their
sheep.
VardaValar1: He said at other times they might be right.
AriehnV: in the movie the goblins came along mixed into the fight and
Thorin got almost killed .. Gandalf called him back with his power as
Maia if i remember right and Thorin seemed to be rather put out of his
wits ^^, but it is also the reason why Thorin accepted Bilbo finally as
full member into his company .. ooops spoiler [Note: not actually the way the movie went, not really a spoiler.]
AriehnV: thats by the way as far as the film goes Pharzi
AriehnV: the first part
VardaValar1: The eagles brought them hares and small sheep to cook and eat.
ArPharazonV: Spoilers don't bother me, but they might others :-)
VardaValar1: Gandalf had to help make the fire because Oin and Gloin had lost their tinder-boxes.
ArPharazonV: Ah, more blue-green fire?
VardaValar1: We can see why the film stops here, because it [the book] says "So ended the adventures of the Misty Mountains."
VardaValar1: Propane? : )
VardaValar1: So there's the refresher on the way the book went.
ArPharazonV: Guess the next part will introduce Beorn soon :-)
VardaValar1: The movie has to keep a certain continuity between scenes and has a time constraint.
VardaValar1: Aye, if the movie follows the books then Beorn shoud be the next encounter.
Eonwe Valar: Yeah, if they made the movie too long, they might have to
do something crazy like divide it into 3 movies or something.... :}
VardaValar1: I can edit out the spoiler for the transcript.
VardaValar1: Right Eonwe! O wait...
VardaValar1: Nope, just three.
VardaValar1: But the extended version should be a whopper.
VardaValar1: That's all I was going to bring up.
VardaValar1: One wonders how we would have tackled the scene if we had to make it into a movie.
VardaValar1: The dwarves really don't get to do much, except Dori in
one small bit. Gandalf has the big hero sacrifce moment, and the eagles
handle the problem.
ArPharazonV: We'd include Dori's daring rescue, surely.
VardaValar1: We would!
ArPharazonV: With the wargs entering the clearing and snapping at him just as he managed to climb up, no doubt!
VardaValar1: Must make the audience chew their nails, right.
VardaValar1: And that would be canon too.
ArPharazonV: For truly comedic effect, maybe it'd take a bite out of his trousers?
VardaValar1: Poor Dori at the hands of Ar-Pharazon.
ArPharazonV: Just wondering how cliche we could possibly make it.
ArPharazonV: Of course, in further comedic faction, the trousers would be repaired miraculously in the next shot.
ArPharazonV: *fashion
VardaValar1: It says one snapped at his cloak and nearly got him. Doesn't say if it ripped the cloak.
ArPharazonV: Snapped at doesn't imply so, I'd say.
VardaValar1: Agreed. At least our hero dwarf gets to keep his useful cloak.
VardaValar1: Any other suggestions for how to do this scene for our version of the movie?
ArPharazonV: Well obviously I've not seen the scene in the actual
movie. I'm not sure how I'd portray the warg conversation. Gandalf's
"point of view" or Bilbo's?
ArPharazonV: And what would Bilbo's point of view (or hearing) be? Just a bunch of growling?
VardaValar1: Bilbo doesn't understand the words, but the meaning is clear enough.
VardaValar1: He wouldn't understand the part about the villagers.
VardaValar1: He would see they were planning something awful and it was against them.
VardaValar1: Thanks for playing, Ar-Pharazon. :-)
VardaValar1: Shall we call it a wrap?
AriehnV: hmm might as well ..:-) not wanting to spoil it for you tho
VardaValar1: ^^
top
VardaValar1: After-meeting!
VardaValar1: Tons of YouTube videos you can enjoy after you see the movie. : )
ArPharazonV: Heh, I'm sure.
ArPharazonV: I could probably watch the whole thing somewhere on youtube if I wanted to.
AriehnV: indeed .. there is a nice cut of both film songs .. the tribute one and Thorin's version it
AriehnV: shows some of the best scenes in that
ArPharazonV: In multiple parts, surely, but still.
VardaValar1: Eventually, you might be able to link enough videos together for a movie, aye. : )
VardaValar1: Wow. One place where they filmed the very next day was flooded. Water rose 20 or 30 feet.
ArPharazonV: I remember that from one of the production videos.
VardaValar1: Aye, that's what this was.
ArPharazonV: ah :-)
AriehnV: aye i remember that yup . Varda and I am watching one of the blogs :-)
VardaValar1: We've been swapping urls. ^^
VardaValar1: 13 minute TV special
VardaValar1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pisaxtEARAE
VardaValar1: That TV special is possibly a bit of a spoiler.
ArPharazonV: Looks good though. Too bad PJ stated there won't be a third experience, I guess we won't get a Silmarillion :-)
VardaValar1: He says that now... ;-)
ArPharazonV: Heheh.
VardaValar1: Maybe the license will come loose later.
VardaValar1: Going to have to dig into the Appendices again. : )
ArPharazonV: Heh.
ArPharazonV: So 3 of the actors playing dwarves, also play the trolls.
VardaValar1: I should mention the stone giants are in the book. I"m glad the movie brings them out .
VardaValar1: Aye!
ArPharazonV: Knowing this, could you identify which ones? ;-)
ArPharazonV: Just watching the movie, I mean.
VardaValar1: They showed who so it's cheating. But no, not from the movie.
AriehnV: oh those stone giants were just amazing .. i wonder how much technique went into that ..
VardaValar1: Tons and tons. : )
AriehnV: the stunts again there just .. wow
AriehnV: visual effect is great
VardaValar1: The one way I haven't seen it yet is without 3D. An excuse to go back the fourth time!
VardaValar1: Namarie for now, good friends. :-)
ArPharazonV: Namarie! And thanks for the links.
VardaValar1: My pleasure
VardaValar1 has left the room.
AriehnV: Namarie you two :-) NN
ArPharazonV: namarie!
AriehnV: Adelandeyo :-)
AriehnV has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: I'm off for the night. Take care, good night, sleep well, and have fun :}
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
Eonwe Valar has left the room.
Iryenth has left the room.
ArPharazonV: Last in the room, saving and sending.
