AragornValar1: but I still study, and play a few dota games a week, as it says under "membership" section ;
VardaValar1: We have the forum and meetings too. And you can add to the Tolkien Site now and again.
AragornValar1: Actually I have been re-reading alot Tolkien lately, started on "The children of Húrin" today.
VardaValar1: We have Europeans in our WoW Lothar and LotRO Landroval games too. Free to play helps.
VardaValar1: O marvelous. : )
AragornValar1: oh nice, but I promised myself to not play a mmorg again.. time consuming!
AragornValar1: I think I will wait for Diablo III..
AragornValar1: : )
VardaValar1: We have members in the D3 Beta who really like it.
ArPharazonV: Hmm. Diablo III. I heard there was something leaked about a secret pony level?
VardaValar1: Don't forget to make the friend channel! Great way to find each other.
VardaValar1: No NDA on D3 is what I heard.
ArPharazonV: well, not leaked from beta, but from.. data or something
AragornValar1: Nice
VardaValar1: The beta is going lickety-split. : )
ArPharazonV: That had better be a pun ;-)
VardaValar1: Pun? Would we pun? Why yes we would.
AriehnV has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: but it's based on the new series, from what I could see
VardaValar1: Aiya Arien :-)
AriehnV: aiya there \:-)
ArPharazonV: and being a bit of a new brony myself, it's almost reason enough for me to get that game ;-)
galdorandwe: Aiya
VardaValar1: Looky who's here. : )
ArPharazonV: Aiya Arien!
AragornValar1: Aiya
VardaValar1: Forgive me, guess I'd better just turn off the stove. Eonwe's stuck with something going on in rl.
AriehnV: aiya Aragorn :-)
AriehnV: sure

AriehnV: great to see you back :-D
AragornValar1: thanks!
VardaValar1: Monday was Melkor's birthday, 6th was Lothiriel's, Ulmo says his is soon, but I don't see it on the calendar in the forum. Blind maybe.
VardaValar1: If you use http://valarguild.org you can find anything we have.

VardaValar1: Web:
VardaValar1: The Tolkien Site has a collection of new goodies.
VardaValar1: We have a new Tolkien-only member, a poet, sister of another (Firiel-T), named Naomi-(T), who sent us:
VardaValar1: "Tar-Miriel"
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/poetry/TarMiriel.htm
VardaValar1: in one of Phar's pet subjects, dealing with Numenor's sinking.
ArPharazonV: Trying to make me feel guilty. It's not going to work!
VardaValar1: hehehe
VardaValar1: We shall bury you, np.
ArPharazonV: I did what I thought was right for my people at the time1
VardaValar1: Firiel-(T) sent a batch of poetry in too. : )
ArPharazonV: Making mistakes is only human.
VardaValar1: and for you, hah! Steal being deathless, somehow. But we know it's listening to your prisoner, Sauron, that really messed up your thinking.
VardaValar1: He has a way with words.
ArPharazonV: So he does.
VardaValar1: Firiel sent in a poem about some Varda person making stars: The Stars of Ilmen
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/poetry/TheStarsofIlmen.htm
VardaValar1: and one about the Noldor who really wanted to leave Valinor for Middle-earth: As For Me!
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/poetry/AsForMe.htm
VardaValar1: and one about Beren's explaining to Luthien that she can't follow him to the place Men go to die, since she's an elf. This is at his first death: Tindomeral
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/poetry/Tindomerel.htm
VardaValar1: The next one is based on a short comment in HoMe about Hurin and his wife Morwen meeting after death in the woods, fairly often, seen by people like a ghost story: At Twilight's Fall
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/poetry/AtTwilightsFall.htm
VardaValar1: and of course Maeglin doesn't think people should pick on him so hard after death about being a traitor: Maeglin's Cry
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/poetry/MaeglinsCry.htm
VardaValar1: In articles, I didn't quite complete the webwork for this, but you can still enjoy what Irmo-(Valar) wrote. It's a wonderful biography of Galadriel, a very tough subject to research, and an amazing job:
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/g/Galadriel/GaladrielI/Galadriel1.htm
VardaValar1: For those of you who wonder where I've been, I've been doing this webwork, hehe. You are not forgotten!
ArPharazonV: Does it incorporate the different versions found in UT?
ArPharazonV: Or has he chosen one?
VardaValar1: He uses UT, aye
VardaValar1: and HoMe, and of course, the LotR and Sil.
ArPharazonV: Aye.
VardaValar1: It's quite a read.

VardaValar1: As Aragorn knows, Eonwe's been doing the huge work of the Games Site Mass Update.
VardaValar1: Eonwe, can you tell us a little about how it's going?
Eonwe Valar: Aye.
Eonwe Valar: I've been trying to put up replies as I get them, and a few are still coming in.
Eonwe Valar: Remember to get your responses in by September 30th.
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/gaming
VardaValar1: to check on your info.
VardaValar1: Also, he takes game reviews. :-)
Eonwe Valar: Aye, if you know you sent me your info, and you don't see it up there, ask me what's going on, hehe.
VardaValar1: Hey, is there no review by us for LotRO?
VardaValar1: or WoW?
Eonwe Valar: No, believe it or not.
VardaValar1: Are we really such slackers? Egad.
Eonwe Valar: Not for the originals, not for any of the expansions.
VardaValar1: Ok, we need everyone to send in some sort of review for our two main games! It's time to swamp Eonwe!
Eonwe Valar: At this point trying to review the original games would be pointless, but the current state of the games is not a lost cause.
VardaValar1: and any game you're fond of. : )
VardaValar1: The free to play systems could get reviews.
VardaValar1: Thanks, Eonwe. That's a ton of work.
VardaValar1: Just trying to collect the emails is quite a thing to do.

VardaValar1: Gaming:
VardaValar1: Any non-WoW, non-LotRO gaming anyone would like to mention doing this past week?
VardaValar1: BroodWar by Fangorn and me together.
ArPharazonV: Few flashgames, including something called Epos, an RPG thing that's a bit remindful of the Final Fantasy games' combat style, but with talents instead of equipment.
VardaValar1: Neat twist.
ArPharazonV: Also been playing some SCII last week (and weeks before sometimes), and have actually managed to reach the top place in the 4v4 Bronze League. We have quite an interesting team, and though I am the worst of the lot, I'm starting to improve :-)
ArPharazonV: http://onemorelevel.com/game/epos
VardaValar1: :-)
VardaValar1: Forgive me, Eonwe, but I need to turn the gavel over to you. Gaming is your main subject anyway. : )
VardaValar1: and Tolkien. and.. heh.
ArPharazonV: that's all for me
AragornValar1: Nothing to report here, just a few dota games here and there (:
VardaValar1: Sorry, what's a dota game?
AragornValar1: Its a custom map for Warcraft III
ArPharazonV: Defense of the Ancients.
VardaValar1: Thanks : )
AragornValar1: excactly!
ArPharazonV: A map that has gained arguably more popularity than the game itself, and has spawned some independent games with the same premise. There's a neat SCII version as well.
AragornValar1: And they are make a game of it now, www.dota2.com
AragornValar1: with valve
ArPharazonV: There was another famous game that was based on it, but not actually related to it.. something with E, I forget.
AragornValar1: A nice game to play if you only have an hour or 2 a day.
AragornValar1: League of legends? Heroes of Newerth?
ArPharazonV: Oh, League of Legends. No E, my bad.
Eonwe Valar: Noted. I'll take the gavel from here :}
ArPharazonV: Plenty of e's in there though.
AragornValar1: y : )
VardaValar1: eeeee!
Eonwe Valar: Sounds like the non-WoW, non-LotRO games are done, so on to WoW :}
AriehnV: i played League of Legends for a while but i am not fast enoughfor that type of game ;-)
Eonwe Valar: One or two potentially intresting reads during the week. One sec while I grab a link.
AriehnV: but was quite fun nontheless
Eonwe Valar: OK, here we go:
AriehnV: i watched the Dota II trailer looks fun, weird creatures though :-)

Eonwe Valar: Lothar:
Eonwe Valar: Sunday Run:
Eonwe Valar: Attending: Eonwe, Varda, Fangorn, Elwing, BofurWe got into Vault of Archavon as we hoped, and got through Archavon. Bofur joined us for Koralon and Emalon. We almost got Toravon down, just barely missing it (1%!) and then the Wintergrasp queue stopped us from going again. Instead, we ran Halls of Origination and picked up a couple of upgrades for Fangorn and Varda. Eonwe Valar: Friday Run:
Eonwe Valar: Attending: Eonwë, Elwing, Varda, Fangorn, Sauron
Eonwe Valar: Bilbo graciously bowed out so those who needed upgrades could try for them.
Eonwe Valar: We queued up for a Heroic and ended up in the Lost City of the Tol'vir. Unfortunately we got stuck on a boss and weren't able to get past him before we needed to start calling it a night.
Eonwe Valar: In other news, Thursday night, we picked up Guild level 13.
VardaValar1: Huzzah!
VardaValar1: And we're already close to 14. : )
Eonwe Valar: I don't think we're that close yet :}
Eonwe Valar: Unless we had some major activity yesterday :}
VardaValar1: oops, I'll recheck the bar next time I'm on.
VardaValar1: Well, people were on yesterday. : )

Eonwe Valar: LotRO:
Eonwe Valar: Monday Run: [note: Wednesday run that was marked as Monday, confusingly]
Eonwe Valar: Monday: Helegrod mark raid run. Heroes: Galdor (61 captain Dolenatan), Indis (captain Mirminuial), Maedhros (58 rune-keeper Lachwen), Nimrodel (59 warden Anthemis), Ulmo (58 hunter Winge), and Varda (minstrel Tinwetari). Grand Stairs quest mode run. Same except that Indis switched to Isaniel (minstrel) and Varda's minstrel dropped to allow it to be a 6-man fellowship. Tomb of Elendil run will be done another day as we ran into a time crunch. Some of the characters needing it are Maehdros' Lachwen, Nerdanel's Ereghel, Pippin's Faerus, and Varda's Tinwetari and Timbridhil.
VardaValar1: Just about a full group there. : )
Eonwe Valar: I don't see a Wednesday report up, so I'll pass the floor to Varda for that :}
VardaValar1: oops
VardaValar1: Now I'm on the spot.
VardaValar1: I managed to remember what we ate for breakfast...
ArPharazonV: ...What did you eat for breakfast, then?
VardaValar1: got it somewhere in this paper clutter... *rummage rummage*
AriehnV: (small addition to friday) [note: WoW Lothar server]
Eonwe Valar: :}
VardaValar1: Scrambled eggs. : )
ArPharazonV: Ah.
Eonwe Valar: While Varda digs for the Wednesday's report, go ahead Arien.
AriehnV: ok
VardaValar1: Hah!
AriehnV: Right i picked up Sauron and Elwing for a normal run
VardaValar1: I did put it up, mislabeled Monday. Fire away, Sunshine. :-)
AriehnV: unfortunately we were a bit short timed and Elwing had to run for a dinner after first boss in Halls of Origination
AriehnV: but sauron stuck to it through to the eend and delayed a delicious meal by Varda :-)
AriehnV: but unfortunately we didnt get guild credit for it but never mind :-) it was fun and thanks again
Eonwe Valar: Glad to hear you got to run together :}
AriehnV: thats me:-) och aye .. wee druid got a respectable 83 now ^^
Eonwe Valar: :}
AragornValar1: Is 85 the cap?
AriehnV: yup
VardaValar1: Right
AragornValar1: Alright, stopped when 80 was the cap I think
AriehnV: a lot changed since :-)
VardaValar1: phone, pardon
ArPharazonV: Not even been a year since the cap was 80 ;-)
Eonwe Valar: OK, back to LotRO to finish up the reports :}
AriehnV: hehe ok
AragornValar1: heh

Eonwe Valar: As far as the LotRO reports go, take the first one I posted as the Wednesday run. I didn't bother looking for the days, only the "Mon" and "Wed" label.
Eonwe Valar: Monday Run:
Eonwe Valar: Monday 8pm EDT instance runs, much fun had. Helegrod marks runs (with a few twists to the usual runs): Heroes: Galdor (61 captain Dolenatan), Hurin (rune-keeper Hiuro who should've been asleep but ran with us anyway), Gildor (guardian Marrella), Nerdanel (lore-master Lothelena), Nimrodel (warden Anthemis), and Varda (Tinwetari). Fil Gashan, 5-manning it and completing the captain's class quest. (Would you like that pan-seared?) Heroes: Galdor (61 captain Dolenatan), Gildor (guardian Marrella), Nerdanel (lore-master Lothelena), Nimrodel (champion Cynthiajane), and Varda (Tinwetari). Grand Stairs, 6-manning it, completing through the boss, Igash. Heroes: Galdor (61 captain Dolenatan), Gildor (guardian Marrella), Indis (lore-master Mereniel), Nerdanel (lore-master Lothelena), Nimrodel (warden Anthemis), and Varda (Tinwetari).
VardaValar1: You'd think I'd learn what day it was. : )
Eonwe Valar: Before we move to Tolkien, is there any other business?
VardaValar1: Correction made on the News.
top

Eonwe Valar: Tolkien:
VardaValar1: sorry phone
VardaValar1: Eowyn on the phone!
Eonwe Valar: Heya to Eowyn :}
Eonwe Valar: Varda had a topic for tonight aside from the chapter walk we were doing.
Eonwe Valar: I'm not sure how she wanted to introduce it, but...
AragornValar1: The chapter walk? Care to explain a bit : )
ArPharazonV: If we have no other topics, we pick chapters from LotR. In order. Did chapter 4 last week.
Eonwe Valar: We were going chapter by chapter through Lord of the Rings, discussing it.
AragornValar1: ok
AragornValar1: good idea, but can u go through 1 chapter in 1 meeting? ;-)
Eonwe Valar: We usually do :}
VardaValar1: Check out the transcripts of the meetings. We are happy to show off.
AragornValar1: I will!
Eonwe Valar: Anyway, the discussion for tonight is disasters in LotR. What, when, why, etc. We can try to arrange them in chronological order.
ArPharazonV: I'd say Gandalf plunging into the abyss after the Balrog, but that's a bit late in the story.
ArPharazonV: Frodo getting stabbed in the shoulder by a Ringwraith.
VardaValar1: The Balrog thought it was bad too. He'd have been fine if Gandalf hadn't come on down.
ArPharazonV: hehe
AragornValar1: haha
ArPharazonV: His own fault, then!
galdorandwe: Fell Winter, Long Winter...the plague. do those count as disasters?
VardaValar1: Yes :-)
Eonwe Valar: I think the idea was more along the lines of the Plague that swept through the Western lands, causing heavy depopulation in Arnor, and some in GOndor, though not as bad.
ArPharazonV: Not exactly the scope of LotR though, didn't think we were talking about the appendices.
VardaValar1: We're all over, not just LotR.
ArPharazonV: Yeah, but Eonwe said LotR in the topic.
Eonwe Valar: OK, my mistake for saying LotR.
ArPharazonV: If we're really going back, we come across the death of the Two Trees, for example.
galdorandwe: The "disaster at the Gladden Fields" is a chapter name, is it not? Would that count as well?
AriehnV: Isildur losing the ring?
AriehnV: aye pretty disastrous i think
AriehnV: especially for him
AriehnV: it reavealed his presence to the orcs at the bank and got shot
ArPharazonV: Disastrous for Deagol too :-)
AriehnV: aye ^^
AriehnV: the sinking Numenor .. pretty desastrous .. and the sundering of Middlearth with the alteration of the lands
ArPharazonV: Aye.
ArPharazonV: A few thousand years before that, the War of Wrath was pretty disastrous for Beleriand.
Eonwe Valar: Melkor even coming into Ea was pretty disastrous.
AragornValar1: If we are to arrange them in chronological order we might aswell start with the creation of the world, or the few times that it was reshaped :-)
AragornValar1: as Eonwe mentioned above ;-)
Eonwe Valar: And let's not forget the discord he caused during the Ainulindallë...
Eonwe Valar: Causing other Ainur to stop singing altogether.
ArPharazonV: It proved pretty disastrous when he went out into the void to look for the Flame, and got his darker thoughts.
VardaValar1: That had a huge effect on Arda's history, all the discords like that.
AragornValar1: Ah yes, creating disharmony.
ArPharazonV: Melkor's creation might have been the first disaster, in a way.
Eonwe Valar: No, Melkor's abuse of his Free Will, on the other hand...
AriehnV: aye .. "" i can give you the wings but you have to learn to fly yourself" sort of :-)
Eonwe Valar: Nothing is evil in its beginning. Even Melkor/Sauron/Saruman was not so :}\
Eonwe Valar: Here's a fun thought along these lines:
Eonwe Valar: Eru allowed all the Ainur to contribute to the song. Melkor did exactly that. Eru didn't step in himself (Third Theme) until the other Ainur stopped singing.
AragornValar1: I'm sorry but I really have to go to bed now, actually had a few Tolkien-questions of my own that I will save for the next meeting I will attend (not to far away I hope).
Eonwe Valar: So when the Valar stopped protecting their own rights (their contribution to the Music) Eru stepped in not only to protect it, but to protect those of his Children.
Eonwe Valar: Sleep well Aragorn :}
AragornValar1: Namarie
VardaValar1: That would be great, Aragorn. :-)
VardaValar1: Namarie for now!
ArPharazonV: namarie!
AragornValar1 has left the room.
AriehnV: Namarie Aragorn .. bah
AriehnV: too late
galdorandwe: night
Eonwe Valar: Happens to me alot too, particularly on WoW :}
AriehnV: hehe
AriehnV: so is he actually in Europe?
ArPharazonV: That's a bit remindful of the sinking of Numenor, actually. When Melkor's evil started to bear fruit, and it almost came to great destruction to the lands of the Valar, it was Eru who changed things in their stead, when they relinquished their rule.
ArPharazonV: Yeah, Sweden.
Eonwe Valar: Aye. For whatever reason, the Valar could not bring themselves to bring such sweeping judgement upon Eru's Children.
VardaValar1: They said why. They too were Eru's children and these were their siblings under Eru with them.
VardaValar1: Just like being the older brother.
Eonwe Valar: Aye, but they had the authority, just not the desire to exercise it.
VardaValar1: They had the authority, aye, but it looked as if they would have to commit fratricide.
VardaValar1: That might not sit so well with Dad.
ArPharazonV: Likely the same as in the Music, yes. They had the right to sing in the song beside him, compete with him and his discord, and chose instead to step aside and let Eru deal with it.
Eonwe Valar: Which is either good or ill, depending on how you look at it, after all, all evil needs to succeed is for good men to do nothing.
VardaValar1: Aye
VardaValar1: Manwe was the one leading the song against Melkor's discord.
VardaValar1: That continued in Arda.
Eonwe Valar: The Valar set a ban, broken by Pharazon and his fleet. Judgement could've been passed on those who set foot in Aman, and the Valar could've made Aman impossible to reached except by special fate, as happened with the Noldor.
VardaValar1: Noldor had long lifespans.
Eonwe Valar: Aye, and Mankind was banned from Aman, no matter their age.
VardaValar1: It would actually have shortened human or any "mortal"'s lifespan. Reverse of what Ar-Pharazon and crew wanted.
Eonwe Valar: Aye, which they tried to explain to the Numenoreans, who didn't listen.
ArPharazonV: Well that's what they *would* say, isn't it? ;-)
galdorandwe: Didn't the NUmenorian kings actually go to Valinor for some ceremony when they took office?
Eonwe Valar: Hehe, Phar.
VardaValar1: No, they could not go to Valinor.
ArPharazonV: I'm pretty sure all ceremonies of such nature took place on Meneltarma. While your idea does ring a bell... it might be from an earlier version.
Eonwe Valar: If there's anything like that, it was in an older tale. It rings a small bell though, and I would wager it was Eressea rather than Valinor.
ArPharazonV: Yes, that's likely.
Eonwe Valar: In response to shorter life in Aman: "Shortened" in that the body would've aged at the rate of Aman's time, but the mind at the rate of normal human life.
ArPharazonV: Does that mean that time seems to slow down? As observed from the physical?
Eonwe Valar: So a 50-year-old in a 5-year-old's body, for example. Wouldn't have been pretty.
VardaValar1: I had the understanding that the body aged faster.
Eonwe Valar: I remember reading something similar to how I explained it.
Eonwe Valar: Basically either the body would cling to the spirit or the spirit to the body, and neither would be that happy.
VardaValar1: We've just about come to the end of our meeting time. If someone still has a comment, please don't be shy!
Eonwe Valar: I'm betting it's either in Peoples of Middle-Earth or in Morgoth's Ring.
VardaValar1: Disasters in Middle-earth seemed to happen a lot, but we are looking at a giant span of time.
Eonwe Valar: I've already written the large general articles for Elves and Dwarves. Someone else can do the research for Men :}
VardaValar1: hehe
Eonwe Valar: Many of the disasters that afflicted the Free Peoples in the Third Age can find their source in Sauron.
VardaValar1: He carried on in Melkor's footsteps, but at least wasn't nihilistic about it. Just loved power.
VardaValar1: First disaster might've been Melkor's making Arda a place so unpleasant that the other Valar felt great concern for the fate of the Elves that would have to live there.
Eonwe Valar: He loved order too, and saw Melkor as a guy who could get things done :}
Eonwe Valar: OK, let's bang the gavel here.
Eonwe Valar: *bangs gavel*
VardaValar1: *backs up*
top

Eonwe Valar: Aftermeeting.
VardaValar1: *huge whoosh of dust*
Eonwe Valar: Feel free to go about your business.
Eonwe Valar: Those heading to Lothar for the Sunday run should begin to make their way there soon.
VardaValar1: Why do I hear Obi-wan's voice?
VardaValar1: okie dokie. Sauron is not home by the way.
