You have just entered room "valarguildmeetingplace."
VardaValar1 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Suilad :-)
ArPharazonV: Aiya
ArPharazonV: how's the power?
VardaValar1: Holding steady!
fladrifv has entered the room.
fladrifv: Aiya
VardaValar1: Hey there, ent :-)
VardaValar1: Invitations completed
VardaValar1: Are you guys in the middle of a game? : )
ArPharazonV: on the one hand I'm in WoW, just finished a wsg
ArPharazonV: on the other hand I'm busy on my study's website for some classes I need to register :-)
VardaValar1: Maybe we should make this fairly fast.
VardaValar1: Should be easy with just us, the best of course. top
VardaValar1: Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!
VardaValar1: Membership:
ArPharazonV: oh, by the way
VardaValar1: Eonwe emailed his reports for WoW, said it looks as if he'll probably miss.
ArPharazonV: Pallando askedme today:
VardaValar1: Go ahead
ArPharazonV: oessala: Hey, at the meeting today can you ask Eonwe to send me an email back if he got the email I sent him?
ArPharazonV: so whether Eonwe's here or not
VardaValar1: And there he is :-)
ArPharazonV: and, lo, he just got online...
Eonwe Valar has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: Heya
ArPharazonV: repeating for Eonwe!
ArPharazonV: oessala: Hey, at the meeting today can you ask Eonwe to send me an email back if he got the email I sent him?
VardaValar1: Hello there : )
VardaValar1: (We're in Membership already)
Eonwe Valar: THanks.
Eonwe Valar: I made it to the meeting, but I have to go at 4:30.
VardaValar1: No worries
Eonwe Valar: Wow, my time must be behind or we started early.
VardaValar1: Phar is trying to get homework too
VardaValar1: Started early. Didn't expect anyone else.
Eonwe Valar: Fair enough.
VardaValar1: Got your report. Thanks for sending. And it looks so nice and neat!
VardaValar1: This week we have a new Tolkien-only member, Luthien-(TV).
VardaValar1: She's from the Netherlands.
VardaValar1: That area is giving Texas a run for its money to see who has the most Valar members. : )
ArPharazonV: :-)
ArPharazonV: we already have 2 representatives here!
VardaValar1: She speaks Dutch and has excellent English. VardaValar1: She translated English Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star into Sindarin for the daughter of some friends. : )
VardaValar1: Then she added how to pronounce it!
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/lang/tranS/translationS/TwinkleTrans.htm
VardaValar1: She also has art that needs put on the site.
VardaValar1: One of them is up on YouTube.
VardaValar1: Plus she showed me how to embed the YouTube she made of Beren and Luthien.
VardaValar1: You're really going to love that one.
VardaValar1: She's also doing her own artwork on Blender and has been sharing her progress.
VardaValar1: It's a view of Taniquetil from the Two Trees.
Eonwe Valar: Sounds cool.
VardaValar1: We're very lucky to have her. : )
VardaValar1: We have another lady, Icekit, who would like to join but
is in the process of moving, so we should be hearing from her later.
VardaValar1: Luthien just came online, 1 sec
Eonwe Valar: Note to Pallando: as far as I can tell, I got no e-mail from him.
VardaValar1: There we go. Took a sec to figure out the new program and bring her in. :-)
VardaValar1: ouch
Eonwe Valar: Hmm, scratch that...
Eonwe Valar: Somehow it slipped under the radar.
luthien@vfemail.net has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Hail Luthien-(TV)!
Eonwe Valar: Assuming he's referring to a GPMU reply mail, he's one of
only a couple that haven't received a reply back from me yet.
luthien@vfemail.net: suilad all ...
Eonwe Valar: Hail and welcome Luthien-(TV) :}
VardaValar1: Mae govannen. : )
luthien@vfemail.net: thank you *bows*
VardaValar1: We have several who need to leave shortly, so we'll try to move along. : )
VardaValar1: Luthien, we just mentioned your poem that is now online and that you have art.
luthien@vfemail.net: oh yes
VardaValar1: I was about to try to find the YouTube work you did and give the url.
luthien@vfemail.net: oh I can find it pretty quick ..
ArPharazonV: Aiya Luthien, sorry for late response :-) luthien@vfemail.net: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwgqOSnQNMA
VardaValar1: Thanks. Bookmark is in my other browser.
VardaValar1: When you folks get a few minutes, you have to watch this. Very good!
VardaValar1: That was sweet of you to do the translation of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and then share it with us too. Much appreciated.
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/lang/tranS/translationS/TwinkleTrans.htm
VardaValar1: I hope the online setup is as you would have it.
fladrifv: welcome Luthien
luthien@vfemail.net: thank you
VardaValar1: If you need changes, just let me know.
luthien@vfemail.net: no I like it ... it looks great
VardaValar1: Would you like to say your "few words" of introduction, like your country, how you found us?
luthien@vfemail.net: sure
luthien@vfemail.net: I just came back to the Netherlands after a couple of years in BC, Canada
luthien@vfemail.net: so I am still sort of settling in
luthien@vfemail.net: and well ... eh ..how I found you *thinking*
luthien@vfemail.net: oh yes
luthien@vfemail.net: I was googling for Mandos, I think
VardaValar1: Nice guy
luthien@vfemail.net: and you have this page about him
luthien@vfemail.net: with also a whole lot about Míriel / Fíriel (mother of Fëanor)
luthien@vfemail.net: and then I got curious, and looked at the rest of the website
VardaValar1: (couple of search engines on the site too)
luthien@vfemail.net: most of these sites are half abandoned or not updated anymore, but this one looked alive enough
luthien@vfemail.net: yes
VardaValar1: Eonwe made the program for the articles. : )
luthien@vfemail.net: well, and then I sent a mail to ask about membership ...
luthien@vfemail.net: if you want to know anything else ... I am happy to tell you, but would not know where to start ...
luthien@vfemail.net: what do you mean .. "program for the articles" ?
VardaValar1: That's great. Just a way of getting to know you.
luthien@vfemail.net: ok :-)
VardaValar1: http://www.valarguild.org/VGEncycSearch.php
ArPharazonV: the software to organize the whole thing and search through it :-) [Note: Does not organize our site, but searches it and categorizes results.]
luthien@vfemail.net: ah cool ..
ArPharazonV: well, the programming
luthien@vfemail.net: I see
luthien@vfemail.net: yes
VardaValar1: When you go to Articles by Subject, it says Search.
luthien@vfemail.net: yes. interesting .. I also do computer programming for a job ...
VardaValar1: We have one under Fun, says Search Anything on the site,
that was set up but not programmed from scratch, by Arveleg-(V).
luthien@vfemail.net: ah
VardaValar1: Eonwe, you have someone to talk to. : )
luthien@vfemail.net: lol
VardaValar1: Eonwe just graduated as a programmer.
luthien@vfemail.net: oh
VardaValar1: He's been programming for us.
VardaValar1: He did the Games Site.
VardaValar1: and is currently redoing it.
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/gaming
fladrifv: What kind of programming if I may ask Luthien?
luthien@vfemail.net: I started out with oracle stuff like
designer/developer etc, then took Java with that, and some other things
like, well .. php / perl / C / flex / ...
VardaValar1: She has her own site too:
fladrifv: could be quite handy for the guild
VardaValar1: http://luthien.awardspace.co.uk/
luthien@vfemail.net: ohh that one ..
luthien@vfemail.net: well, it is not official
luthien@vfemail.net: it was more like dedicated to Tinúviel ..
VardaValar1: It's just the kind of thing we enjoy.
luthien@vfemail.net: but I use it more or less to put some other things that I like on as well
VardaValar1: Should I put it under the Luthien section?
fladrifv: Saw there aswell some blender renders, do you make more art work with blender?
VardaValar1: as in the Tolkien character?
luthien@vfemail.net: I just started that about 2 months ago
luthien@vfemail.net: ehh
luthien@vfemail.net: I may want to think about that ...
luthien@vfemail.net: (re question about website)
VardaValar1: I'll let it be then and just put it as one of your personal pages. : )
luthien@vfemail.net: I am not sure what I want with it, maybe yes, just make it a personal thing
luthien@vfemail.net: I wanted to make a more visual impression of
Laurelin and Telperion, and from there the whole idea sort of expanded
quite a lot, bc I needed a background
VardaValar1: Before Eonwe has to go, I need to bring up an order of business. : )
VardaValar1: Oct 4 will be our 11th anniversary as the Valar Guild. :-)
luthien@vfemail.net: wow, that is quite a feat on the internet ...
ArPharazonV: hmm, that's saturday isn't it?
Eonwe Valar: Aye, enxt Saturday.
Eonwe Valar: next even, bah.
VardaValar1: We are today starting the attempt to keep this chat room up until the next Sunday meeting. : )
VardaValar1: We have been doing this since Orodreth-(V) got the idea. He's now Pallando-(Valar).
VardaValar1: We are accepting anything folks want to try for this event.
VardaValar1: We usually send in stories, art, poetry, humor, etc for the Tolkien Site with a comment that it's for whichever anniversary.
VardaValar1: We also tend to do things in the games: events, fireworks, whatever we come up with. : )
fladrifv: will the fireworks be up again on the main page aswell varda?
VardaValar1: The ideas people have are generally quite original and amazing.
VardaValar1: Good idea!
VardaValar1: I should try to put up different artwork daily on the main page.
VardaValar1: Did you notice Elatan's shield is up now? : )
fladrifv: or every refresh differently :-) [Note: this is the suggestion we used, having the image refresh differerently.]
VardaValar1: Quite a media mix.
VardaValar1: Aye. Was considering that too.
VardaValar1: I may need help from some of you programmers, but will give it a shot on a rotator.
ArPharazonV: hmm... might want to try to get into contact with Arien and Menel, see if we can get something going on WoW Europe
VardaValar1: Good idea.
ArPharazonV: even if we don't all have characters on the server we decide, we might make new ones
VardaValar1: Valandil
ArPharazonV: yep, and Helm
VardaValar1: Drag them all in.
VardaValar1: Galadriel is still alive and kicking, give him an emailed time. : )
Eonwe Valar: Try one of our Diablo TOurneys in WoW, hehe.
ArPharazonV: I'll sail up to them all with my mighty fleet and bring em home, just like I did with Sauron *nod*
fladrifv: maybe we can get a starcraft event up
VardaValar1: Good thought
ArPharazonV: oh, and we might want to do something with Warcraft 3 or Starcraft, aye
VardaValar1: Let me know special event times so I can post it to the News.
VardaValar1: Eonwe can post to Games.
Eonwe Valar: Both of those can be run without a disc now if you have the most recent update.
VardaValar1: and I will have our Anniversary Events page mention it and participants. : )
VardaValar1: Neat!
ArPharazonV: the variability of Warcraft 3's games might make for a
more appropriate celebratory (sp?) organization, but I think Fladrif
has trouble getting War3 :-)
ArPharazonV: I've always found Starcraft a bit boring in that respect, all games follow the same principle
VardaValar1: Just give me the time and place and event.
ArPharazonV: we'll see :-)
VardaValar1: Email it to me for a blurb on the News. : )
Eonwe Valar: My apologies, but it's time for me to go. I can't leave my
computer on while I'm gone, but I'll come back in when I get back.
VardaValar1: Namarie!
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
VardaValar1: I have your report, np
Eonwe Valar: Take care all, have fun, Happy Early Anniversary :}
luthien@vfemail.net: Namaer!
Eonwe Valar has left the room.
VardaValar1: If you have any story, poem, art etc be sure to let me know to credit it for the Anniversary if it is intended.
VardaValar1: It can be anything, just keep up the quality as always. : )
ArPharazonV: I'll try to keep the room up during the day for most of
the week, but that'll be practically impossible tomorrow and the day
after
VardaValar1: If it's a month late, you can still mark it for the Anniversary as belated.
ArPharazonV: and I always close down at nights, but with people in different timezones I'm sure someone can catch up
VardaValar1: Right. That's our plan, Phar. : )
fladrifv: Ill be a backup for arphar
VardaValar1: Nice!
VardaValar1: I'll try to keep it up also.
VardaValar1: We are going to miss Pallando a lot on this!
ArPharazonV: and, yay, I'm registered for 2 more courses in the next
period of study... was a bit messy with courses having different names
than previously known, but I got em in the end
fladrifv: maybe I can host a little machine to join the channel
ArPharazonV: heh
VardaValar1: Congrats, Pharazon!
ArPharazonV: didn't we used to have that sort of thing in Warcraft 3?
ArPharazonV: Huan's bot?
VardaValar1: Aye
luthien@vfemail.net: :-)
VardaValar1: Farmer Maggot might be able to help out too, if we can get his attention.
ArPharazonV: which is even funnier in Dutch, because "bot" means "bone" :-)
VardaValar1: But it's nice if we can have real people
VardaValar1: hehe
luthien@vfemail.net: hahaha
VardaValar1: No telling what crazy things we are saying then. : )
VardaValar1: I did learn hihi is the same as haha or hehe and really like it. : )
ArPharazonV: ho ho ho?
fladrifv: always fun to read the bot logs afterwards :-)
VardaValar1: Aye. : )
VardaValar1: If you folks catch anyone else online, remind them of the
anniversary chat room marathon. We need all the help we can get!
fladrifv: hihi is more for the shorter folks
VardaValar1: shorter?
ArPharazonV: I guess our "hihi" is equivalent to English "heehee" but with shorter sounding vowel-sounds?
fladrifv: nothing for ents
ArPharazonV: and yes, it's often associated with high voices and
shorter characters, like the laughs female gnomes have in wow ;-)
VardaValar1: Poor Flad. Come up with your own laugh. : )
ArPharazonV: that's a true "hihi"
VardaValar1: Reminds me, Eowyn says hihi. Plays a lot of gnomes in WoW. : )
fladrifv: ents laugh so slowely you would hardly notice the difference between breathing and laughing
VardaValar1: hehehe
ArPharazonV: *imagines ents laughing* hurr....hurr....hurr... top
VardaValar1: We seem to have covered Web while we were on Membership. : )
VardaValar1: o my. lol top
VardaValar1: On to Gaming for some short reports.
[Other games. WoW: Europe, Lothar, Uldaman. LotRO: Moria, Landroval.]
VardaValar1: (Didn't resist. Bad me.) VardaValar1: Any games played that weren't WoW or LotRO? : )
ArPharazonV: yep
ArPharazonV: I played a fun little fps-style Lotr game
ArPharazonV: called Fellowship of the Ring
ArPharazonV: created by Surreal/Black Label
ArPharazonV: I had the game for quite a few years, and already played it in the past, it's quite old
ArPharazonV: but I really liked the combat style and tried for it again
ArPharazonV: you may remember me mentioning this game before in a
meeting, but without the ability to play it: the game would always show
a blank screen when starting up
ArPharazonV: but this week I finally found the answer to that on a few
internetforums, a "3d analyze" piece of software which fixes some
specific problems with specific games concerning videocards, and one of
the specific things it did
ArPharazonV: was fix that Lotr game :-)
AriehnV has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: so I was quite happy!
VardaValar1: Aiya Arien!
ArPharazonV: it's not a long game, and it's not too hard, and I
finished it in 3 days... but the playstyle continues to be one of the
funnest I've seen in an fps
VardaValar1: Meet our new Tolkien-only, Luthien. : )
VardaValar1: Sounds like one we should try, Phar. : )
ArPharazonV: and I had a good time playing :-)
VardaValar1: That's the main thing.
AriehnV: aiya all :-) sorry for the late entrance , i was abducted to
sfk on my lock just as i was to log out of the game to come here ;-)
AriehnV: and aiya Luthien
ArPharazonV: the creators got started on a sequel "Treason of Isengard" but it was cancelled before completion, which is always a sad thing
VardaValar1: We played Dungeons & Dragons tabletop at my house. Sauron DM'd, Gimli and I were included in the gamers.
VardaValar1: awww Phar
ArPharazonV: because the fotr one continues to be one of my favorite games
VardaValar1: Glad you escaped, Arien. : )
ArPharazonV: I also played a few other games sporadically but nothing of note
ArPharazonV: and hi, Arien :-)
ArPharazonV: or: Aiya ;-)
VardaValar1: Fladrif, you gamed, surely?
fladrifv: May I step on stage for just a short while?
VardaValar1: It will creak, but feel free.
fladrifv: I will be carefull with the stage
ArPharazonV: don't take root on it :-)
ArPharazonV: might be hard to get off of it then!
fladrifv: This week quite a few chess battles has gone on, if any want to join these please feel free to contact me
VardaValar1: We'll just step on his branches for the next parts so he doesn't have to move off.
VardaValar1: By AIM?
fladrifv: Aim or email
fladrifv: all will work fine
VardaValar1: Could be something to do while keeping the chat room open for the 11th Anniversary. : )
fladrifv: or shout my name out loud, but change of succes is reduced by the last method
fladrifv: chance?
VardaValar1: Chances are rather low on this side of the water, aye.
fladrifv: next to chess it was spore week, of which soon hopefully a review will popup on the review page
fladrifv: it only has to pass quality and language checks
VardaValar1: Oh, I want to try that Spore character generator! Yay for having power and internet back!
ArPharazonV: hehe
VardaValar1: Definitely plan to read your review.
ArPharazonV: Fladrif, you managed to build ents yet? :-)
VardaValar1: Let me know when you put up a review so I can put it on the general News. : )
fladrifv: it was green and long
fladrifv: but was too much tempted to put on 24 eyes
AriehnV: .i heard so much about that Spore thing it seems to be fun to
be able to play on planets and creatures based on other peoples fantasy
fladrifv: so it was rather an eye tree
VardaValar1: Legolas said he saw eyes in the forest. Now we understand.
ArPharazonV: oh, here's a nice one for inspiration
fladrifv: you never know whats deep inside the forrest
ArPharazonV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkagQj07Z8E
VardaValar1: lol Flad. That is quite an ent
VardaValar1: Thanks for sharing that. :-)
fladrifv: *walks off stage* Sorry for wrecking it
VardaValar1: Aule! We have a job for you!
VardaValar1: No problem It will be repaired shortly.
VardaValar1: (short, o my)
VardaValar1: World of WarCraft Online:
AriehnV has left the room.
VardaValar1: Arien crashed I think. She was trying to type.
AriehnV has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Welcome back, Sunshine. : )
VardaValar1: What were you trying to type?
AriehnV: just a silly comment lol*i woder what s *short* for an ent
VardaValar1: That would be...most of us.
ArPharazonV: sorry for half afk-ness for a bit, making food
VardaValar1: So, what's for dinner?
VardaValar1: We had fried pork chops and rice here.
ArPharazonV: small meatball-thingies in a sauce, I'm making now as a late-night snack
AriehnV: fish and chips :-)
ArPharazonV: I suppose the proper name is "snackballs"
VardaValar1: Sounds fun, Phar. Yum, Arien. : )
VardaValar1: lol
VardaValar1: Back to WoW
VardaValar1: Phar, seen any of the other Valarites on Argent Dawn server?
ArPharazonV: Menelvagor for a bit, though not much, and I think I saw Valandil pass by for a few sec
ArPharazonV: if we want to do anything this week for the anniversary it might be best to meet up in messengers instead
VardaValar1: Thanks, remind them of the anniversary and the chat if you see them.
ArPharazonV: yep
VardaValar1: We agree. : )
AriehnV: iwhen is the anniversary ?
ArPharazonV: saturday, but we'll try keeping up the chatroom and other activities from today until next sunday
ArPharazonV: hmm, 11 years, right?
windofhyperia has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: then it's also... my personal fifth anniversary in the Valarguild!
ArPharazonV: 5, good number
ArPharazonV: a "lustrum"
AriehnV: nice :-) a long time
VardaValar1: Aiya : )
VardaValar1: Welcome to the start of the weeklong anniversary chat!
VardaValar1: Eowyn says hi : )
AriehnV: hi hi:-)
fladrifv: 5 years...is it already that long?
VardaValar1: Congrats, Phar. : )
VardaValar1: About 11 for me. Sure has been that long. Mind-boggling. : )
ArPharazonV: yep, pretty much... I still remember joining on the anniversary day, felt so special :-)
fladrifv: then it should also be 5 years for me :-)
windofhyperia: =)
VardaValar1: And you're still special. : )
ArPharazonV: hmm, brb, gonna eat that snack now and it's a bit messy to eat near the pc
ArPharazonV: continue with your gaming reports, I'll be back as soon as I can :-)
VardaValar1: *brushes meatballs off the screen*
VardaValar1: Ok, Arien. Your turn to tell about WoW in Europe, and by the way, Luthien is from the Netherlands. : )
AriehnV: ah right :-) yo .. i ve been massively questing on Auchindoun
server and my alt crew grows steadily ... from planned 3 characters at
most that has become 8 by now
VardaValar1: o oh.
AriehnV: all in their late teens or early twendies apart from the
hunter and the lock , the lock is 31 and the hunter 37 and enoying her
Kodo and Felsteed respectively
VardaValar1: My Tauren wants a kodo...
AriehnV: i ve been trying to log into Argent Dawn for a few times but i easily get bored when i am the only one online
AriehnV: Kodos are NICE :-)
ArPharazonV: I've been online a bunch of times!
VardaValar1: Well, big anyway.
AriehnV: indeed well suited for a tauren
ArPharazonV: and lost the brewfest kodo today by a roll ><
AriehnV: meh i need to get the hunter into your fields lol , so we can quest together
VardaValar1: Still wish we could go back to using all 4 hooves for fast
run. I got around it by being a shaman using ghost wolf form. ;-)
VardaValar1: One roll! ow
ArPharazonV: hehe... plains running
AriehnV: ah well managed to get the chain until overlord done so thats on the schedule
AriehnV: back to Auchindoun: Helm is running ahead with his lock .. 39 within a bit more than two weeks
AriehnV: enjoys it immensely and has started ganking in Redridge ;-)
AriehnV: thats my report done :O)
VardaValar1: Thank you, Arien. : )
VardaValar1: Eonwe could not stay, so he emailed his report.
VardaValar1: It looks so nice with bullets and such, but won't translate as well into AIM, so bear with me.
VardaValar1: This is in the Americas, on Lothar server:
VardaValar1: Eonwe's words:
VardaValar1: 1.) While Kalasul, my alchemist, was turning primal earth
into primal water this week, he had an epiphany on how to turn primal
mana into primal fire (read: he got a "discovery" alchemy recipe)
VardaValar1: 2.)We now have a new bank tab. Tabs are now organized as the following:
ArPharazonV: mana into fire? not bad, mana's one of the easiest to get
VardaValar1: O oh. It says the message has banned data.
VardaValar1: Did you see a list of tabs on the bank on your screen?
ArPharazonV: nope
VardaValar1: oy
AriehnV: nope
VardaValar1: alas. I'll try something
VardaValar1: We now have a new bank tab. Tabs are now organized as the following:
VardaValar1: Crafting Recipes
VardaValar1: Crafting Materials
VardaValar1: Usable or Consumable items
VardaValar1: ah hah! It did not like the slash mark between usable and consumable!
VardaValar1: Armor and weapons
VardaValar1: Use tab 4 for weapons and armor (rings and necklaces too) you hope to be used.
VardaValar1: If you don't care what happens to it (namely if it gets
disenchanted and the product used/thrown back in the bank) you can
throw it in the Crafting Mats tab.
VardaValar1: Done with the copy and paste. : )
VardaValar1: This is useful info especially for those of us who play on Lothar and will be reading the transcript later.
VardaValar1: The rest of you can wake up now. *poke*
VardaValar1: Lord of the Rings Online'
VardaValar1: The Mines of Moria expansion beta test is underway, some Valar are in it and not allowed to make comments other than the repeated "awesome".
VardaValar1: Today on the regular Landroval server,
VardaValar1: Melkor, his two sons Orome and Angrod (both adults), Ulmo, Ancalagon and I ran a batch of quests in Angmar.
VardaValar1: A great time was had by all. : )
VardaValar1: except for the wights and other baddies in the area.
VardaValar1: Ancalagon is making progress towards buying his notebook computer
VardaValar1: so he will be back in AIM with us again. :-)
VardaValar1: He says hi to everyone here.
AriehnV: say hi to the Black One back :-)
VardaValar1: The Fall Festival is underway on LotRO. New for this time are the nutty masks we can win by riddling quests.
VardaValar1: The Black Dragon would say hi back. :-)

VardaValar1: Thank you!
luthien@vfemail.net: I have a piece of something that really impressed me ... AriehnV: i find it hard to decide
but certainly one of my favorites in LotR has to be in Return of the
King when Sam helps Frodo on the *last leg* to the Fiery Mountain
luthien@vfemail.net: from the Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth
luthien@vfemail.net: oh yes
luthien@vfemail.net: that is really impressive
AriehnV: oops go ahead Luthien
luthien@vfemail.net: no, I can wait ...
luthien@vfemail.net: I have it here in a text thing ..
AriehnV: i was thinking about a specific moment
ArPharazonV: by the way, I need to be going to bed
ArPharazonV: I'll save and send
AriehnV: you know when Sam and Frodo take a short break somewhere . and discuss heroes and villains
VardaValar1: Thank you, Phar
VardaValar1: Can you type your quote?
AriehnV: searching#
VardaValar1: I will try to keep AIM up, at least until I have to go on the Urugarth instance tonight. Too much lag.
VardaValar1: Then return.
luthien@vfemail.net: er, what does that mean?
VardaValar1: I will remain in this chat room until a few hours from now, leave, and return.
luthien@vfemail.net: what is an "Urugarth instance?"
luthien@vfemail.net: Sounds like a SF novel ...
VardaValar1: It's a place in Angmar.
luthien@vfemail.net: New! The Urugarth Instance! Sensational sense of Wonder!
luthien@vfemail.net: lol
VardaValar1: hehe
[Note: Times below are in CDT. Please add one hour for EDT.]
VardaValar1 (5:53:11 PM): An instance is an area of the game world that
you and your group have to yourself, no one else can get in.
ArPharazonV (5:53:12 PM): saved
VardaValar1 (5:53:18 PM): Thank you, Phar!
luthien@vfemail.net (5:53:26 PM): ah, Angmar ..
luthien@vfemail.net (5:53:28 PM): ok

AriehnV (5:54:02 PM): ah got it
VardaValar1 (5:54:09 PM): Go ahead, Arien. : )
AriehnV (5:54:09 PM): found the passage
AriehnV (5:54:39 PM): its in *The stairs of Cirith Ungol* , and not about heroes and villains but about stories :-)
VardaValar1 (5:54:58 PM): o cool : ) AriehnV (5:57:54 PM): Sam sais " The
brave things in the old tales and song, Mr, Frodo: adventures as i used
to call them. I used to think that they were things the wonderful folk
of the stories went out and looked for
AriehnV (5:57:58 PM): , because they wanted them, because they were wexcinting and life was a bit dull, a kind of a soirt m as you might say....
AriehnV (5:59:11 PM): But thats not the way it is with the tales that really mattered, or the ones that stay in mind.
ArPharazonV (5:59:25 PM): sent!
luthien@vfemail.net (6:00:06 PM): :) yes, that passage made a particular impression on me as well ...
AriehnV (6:01:12 PM): aye .. it goes on a bit this and frodo answeres * and thats the way of real tales *
AriehnV (6:01:18 PM): i like it :-)
ArPharazonV (6:01:37 PM): I'm not sure if I even have a favorite
particular moment... there's just so many good ones, and no single one
stands out over the rest
VardaValar1 (6:01:39 PM): Excellent! Thanks for sharing that!
ArPharazonV (6:01:42 PM): but... goodnight
ArPharazonV (6:01:43 PM): Namarie!

luthien@vfemail.net (6:02:43 PM): well, at least. I find it interesting ..
VardaValar1 (6:02:47 PM): Aye, and why so much of it. His moral sense, loyalty, courage.
AriehnV (6:02:49 PM): i ve got to follow the Golden one i fear
fladrifv (6:03:09 PM): Namarie Ariehn

biortheythling (6:06:15 PM) has been invited.
liberalhound (6:06:15 PM) has been invited.
fladrifv (6:09:30 PM): some side chat I had just a thought fladrifv (6:09:41 PM): was wondering how the ents have learnt the thoungue of the normal mortal men
luthien@vfemail.net (6:10:52 PM): you mean, they did not really interact with them?
fladrifv (6:11:15 PM): they could obviously speak it but as far as I know they only interacted with the elves
luthien@vfemail.net (6:12:23 PM): but it is not so strange to think that they did interact with men
luthien@vfemail.net (6:12:30 PM): they had ample time to ..
VardaValar1 (6:13:06 PM): Elves were the missing link there. They were
friends with both the Ents and the Dunedain, and taught Elvish to both.
VardaValar1 (6:14:31 PM): Bombur-(V) says hi, using an alternative client and I'm having trouble inviting him in.
VardaValar1 (6:14:44 PM): MrMonkey2002Blah

MrMonkey2002Blah (6:15:51 PM): Hail :D
VardaValar1 (6:16:27 PM): Bombur, meet Luthien-(TV). Luthien, meet Bombur-(V). :-)
luthien@vfemail.net (6:16:50 PM): Suilad :)
MrMonkey2002Blah (6:16:55 PM): For what does the T stand?
VardaValar1 (6:17:09 PM): Tolkien-only Valar
VardaValar1 (6:17:53 PM): No gaming, straight Tolkien Site helper. : )
luthien@vfemail.net (6:17:58 PM): (just as a sidenote, I think the abbreviation is a bit awkward :p )
VardaValar1 (6:18:01 PM): So, very valuable.
MrMonkey2002Blah (6:18:16 PM): Not chronologically?
MrMonkey2002Blah (6:18:18 PM): :)
VardaValar1 (6:18:29 PM): Pardon, Luthien-(Tolkien-only Valar Member) ;-)
VardaValar1 (6:18:58 PM): Seemed shorter with TV
luthien@vfemail.net (6:19:00 PM): chronologically?
luthien@vfemail.net (6:19:10 PM): yes, but it makes me think of televisions
fladrifv (6:19:25 PM): ToVm, could that work?
VardaValar1 (6:19:29 PM): Ok, so a slight bit of tongue in cheek. We could say VT
VardaValar1 (6:19:37 PM): or ToV?
VardaValar1 (6:20:00 PM): You're the one who made the YouTube video, fits you better than most!
luthien@vfemail.net (6:20:09 PM): lol
VardaValar1 (6:20:20 PM): It's great. You guys have to see it.
MrMonkey2002Blah (6:21:14 PM): Have a link?
VardaValar1 (6:21:41 PM): aye, digging
VardaValar1 (6:22:21 PM): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwgqOSnQNMA
MrMonkey2002Blah (6:25:02 PM): Interesting. The vocal style almost reminds me of some christian hymns.
luthien@vfemail.net (6:25:17 PM): oh, it reminds me of Schubert ...
VardaValar1 (6:25:44 PM): I like it. : )
windofhyperia (6:27:56 PM) has left the room.
fladrifv (6:28:22 PM): reminds me more of the niblung ringen of wagner
VardaValar1 (6:30:11 PM): Thank you for making that, Luthien. :-)
luthien@vfemail.net (6:30:19 PM): yw
VardaValar1 (6:34:00 PM): Ulmo just entered Lord of the Rings Online : )
VardaValar1 (6:34:22 PM): Ancalagon will try to keep the chat room open while he's at work.
luthien@vfemail.net (6:34:34 PM): ?
fladrifv (6:34:41 PM): good and we take over after that
VardaValar1 (6:35:06 PM): Very good
VardaValar1 (6:36:15 PM): Anc has a laptop there that he can use to bring up AIM.
fladrifv (6:38:08 PM): keep the sun and moon up while Im asleep, namarie all
VardaValar1 (6:38:22 PM): and the stars. As you say! top
VardaValar1 (6:40:52 PM): I would have to call this After-meeting. *bangs gavel*
VardaValar1 (6:40:59 PM): Now, Luthien, did you have a Tolkien quote?
VardaValar1 (6:41:11 PM): I have one or two also, got distracted.
VardaValar1 (6:41:18 PM): The official marathon begins!
fladrifv (6:41:21 PM): meeting notes saved
VardaValar1 (6:41:52 PM): Thank you, Fladrif!
fladrifv (6:44:46 PM) has left the room. VardaValar1 (6:58:24 PM): Silmarillion, "Of Beren and Luthien":
VardaValar1 (6:58:55 PM): "But when the wolf came for Beren, Felagund put forth all his power, and burst his bonds; and
VardaValar1 (6:59:18 PM): he wrestled with the werewolf, and slew it with his hands and teeth;
VardaValar1 (6:59:27 PM): yet he himself was wounded to the death.
VardaValar1 (7:00:05 PM): Then he spoke to Beren, saying, "I go now to my long rest in the timeless halls beyond the seas and the Mountains of Aman.
VardaValar1 (7:00:24 PM): It will be long ere I am seen among the Noldor again; and it may be
VardaValar1 (7:00:56 PM): that we shall not meet a second time in death or life, for the fate of our kindreds are apart. Farewell!"
VardaValar1 (7:01:19 PM): He died then in the dark, in Tol-in-Gaurhoth, whose great tower he himself had built.
VardaValar1 (7:01:49 PM): Thus King Felagund, fairest and most beloved of the house of Finwe, redeemed his oath
VardaValar1 (7:02:08 PM): ; but Beren mourned beside him in despair.
VardaValar1 (7:02:46 PM): In that hour Luthien came, and standing
upon the bridge that led to Sauron's isle she sang a song that no walls
of stone could hinder.
VardaValar1 (7:03:25 PM): Beren heard, and he thought that he dreamed; for the stars shone above him, and the trees nightingales were singing.
VardaValar1 (7:04:19 PM): And in answer he sang a song of challenge
that he had made in praise of the Seven Stars the Sickle of the
Valar that Varda hung above the North
VardaValar1 (7:04:31 PM): as a sign for the fall of Morgoth.
VardaValar1 (7:04:54 PM): Then all strength left him and he fell down into darkness.
VardaValar1 (7:05:09 PM): But Luthien heard his answering voice, and she sang a song of greater power.
VardaValar1 (7:05:22 PM): The wolves howled and the isle trembled.
VardaValar1 (7:05:34 PM): End quote.
VardaValar1 (7:05:40 PM): She rescues Beren. : )
MrMonkey2002Blah (7:17:21 PM) has left the room. luthien@vfemail.net (7:38:14 PM): this is my quote, from the Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth. It is in HoME
volume 10. It is a conversation between Finrod Felagund of the Eldar
(elves), and Andreth, a wise woman of the Edain (men), about the nature
of the two kindreds.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:38:28 PM): 'Now we Eldar are your kinsmen,
and your friends also (if you will believe it), and we have observed
you already through three lives of Men with love and concern and much
thought.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:38:44 PM): Of this then we are certain without debate, or else all our wisdom is vain: the fear of Men, though close akin indeed to the fear of the Quendi, are yet not the same.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:38:50 PM): For strange as we deem it, we see clearly that the fear of Men are not, as are ours, confined to Arda, nor is Arda their home.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:39:05 PM): 'Can you deny it? Now we Eldar do
not deny that ye love Arda and all that is therein (in so far as ye are
free from the Shadow) maybe even as greatly as do we.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:39:15 PM): Yet otherwise. Each of our kindreds perceives Arda differently, and appraises its beauties in different mode and degree.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:39:26 PM): How shall I say it? To me the
difference seems like that between one who visits a strange country,
and abides there a while (but need not), and one who has lived in that
land always (and must).
luthien@vfemail.net (7:39:33 PM): To the former all things that he
sees are new and strange, and in that degree lovable. To the other all
things are familiar, the only things that are, his own, and in that
degree precious.'
luthien@vfemail.net (7:39:41 PM): 'If you mean that Men are the guests,' said Andreth.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:39:49 PM): 'You have said the word,' said Finrod: 'that name we have given to you.'
luthien@vfemail.net (7:39:56 PM): 'Lordly as ever,' said Andreth.
'But even if we be but guests in a land where all is your own, my
lords, as you say, tell me what other land or things do we know?'
luthien@vfemail.net (7:40:09 PM): 'Nay, tell me!' said Finrod. 'For
if you do not know, how can we? But do you know that the Eldar say of
Men that they look at no thing for itself;
luthien@vfemail.net (7:40:17 PM): that if they study it, it is to
discover something else; that if they love it, it is only (so it seems)
because it reminds them of some other dearer thing? Yet with what is
this comparison? Where are these other things?
luthien@vfemail.net (7:40:24 PM): 'We are both, Elves and Men, in
Arda and of Arda; and such knowledge as Men have is derived from Arda
(or so it would appear). Whence then comes this memory that ye have
with you, even before ye begin to learn?
luthien@vfemail.net (7:40:40 PM): 'It is not of other regions in Arda from which ye have journeyed. We also have journeyed from afar.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:40:54 PM): But were you and I to go together to your ancient homes east away I should recognize the things there as part of my home,
luthien@vfemail.net (7:41:00 PM): but I should see in your eyes the same wonder and comparison as I see in the eyes of Men in Beleriand who were born here.'
luthien@vfemail.net (7:41:11 PM): 'You speak strange words, Finrod,' said Andreth, 'which I have not heard before.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:41:18 PM): Yet my heart is stirred as if by some truth that it recognizes even if it does not understand it.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:41:26 PM): But fleeting is that memory, and goes ere it can be grasped; and then we grow blind.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:41:34 PM): And those among us who have known
the Eldar, and maybe have loved them, say on our side: "There is no
weariness in the eyes of the Elves".
luthien@vfemail.net (7:41:41 PM): And we find that they do not understand the saying that goes among Men: too often seen is seen no longer.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:41:53 PM): And they wonder much that in the tongues of Men the same word may mean both "long-known" and "stale".
luthien@vfemail.net (7:42:02 PM): 'We have thought that this was so
only because the Elves have lasting life and undiminished vigour.
"Grown-up children" we, the guests, sometimes call you, my lord.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:42:09 PM): And yet - and yet, if nothing in Arda for us holds its savour long, and all fair things grow dim, what then?
luthien@vfemail.net (7:42:14 PM): Does it not come from [the] Shadow
upon our hearts? Or do you say that it is not so, but this was ever our
nature, even before the wound?'
luthien@vfemail.net (7:42:21 PM): 'I say so, indeed,' answered
Finrod. 'The Shadow may have darkened your unrest, bringing swifter
weariness and soon turning it to disdain, but the unrest was ever
there, I believe.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:42:31 PM): <<< end of quote >>>
VardaValar1 (7:42:41 PM): *applauds*
VardaValar1 (7:42:59 PM): The nature of Man!
luthien@vfemail.net (7:43:15 PM): says a lot, doesn't it?
VardaValar1 (7:43:17 PM): He comes from outside and returns in time to Eru.
VardaValar1 (7:43:19 PM): Aye!
VardaValar1 (7:43:36 PM): Also the nature of Elves. They are of Arda.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:43:54 PM): I thought of this analogy some time ago ..
luthien@vfemail.net (7:44:08 PM): like the threads in a loom .. horizontal and vertical
VardaValar1 (7:44:25 PM): nice!
VardaValar1 (7:45:01 PM): Man would be vertical.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:45:50 PM): I think that both kindreds have their
complementary qualities. There are many differences that I am aware of
and possibly many more, ..
luthien@vfemail.net (7:45:58 PM): I feel like it is like the (not sure
how you say that in English) the vertical and horizontal threads in
weaving. Men feel "vertical" to me in this analogy..
luthien@vfemail.net (7:46:08 PM): many parallel, shooting up, providing height, escaping .. and Elves "horizontal":
luthien@vfemail.net (7:46:15 PM): stretched out wide, 'in all places and times at once', providing depth and a foundation.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:46:32 PM): (had to look that up)
VardaValar1 (7:46:48 PM): Well done
VardaValar1 (7:49:28 PM): Good analogy
VardaValar1 (7:49:43 PM): The human foundation is elsewhere.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:49:52 PM): yes
luthien@vfemail.net (7:50:36 PM): I find this part:
luthien@vfemail.net (7:50:43 PM): "that if they study it, it is to
discover something else; that if they love it, it is only (so it seems)
because it reminds them of some other dearer thing? Yet with what is
this comparison? Where are these other things?"
luthien@vfemail.net (7:50:52 PM): particularly interesting ...
VardaValar1 (7:50:59 PM): Where indeed? : )
luthien@vfemail.net (7:51:26 PM): I really can't tell you ...
VardaValar1 (7:51:41 PM): The elves can't know, not really.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:51:48 PM): no
VardaValar1 (7:51:58 PM): It would be outside Arda
luthien@vfemail.net (7:52:02 PM): yes
VardaValar1 (7:52:22 PM): Humans stop in at the Halls of Mandos, reflect on their lives, then go on where elves cannot follow.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:52:26 PM): the odd thing is, that I read this maybe two months ago ...
luthien@vfemail.net (7:52:27 PM): yes
VardaValar1 (7:52:36 PM): Thus was Finrod sad that he might not see Beren again.
VardaValar1 (7:52:51 PM): and Legolas waited until Aragorn's death to leave Middle-earth.
luthien@vfemail.net (7:57:14 PM): and it describes what I have felt as
a key characteristic / difference for a long time very well ..
luthien@vfemail.net (7:58:15 PM): but yes, I should go get some sleep.
VardaValar1 (7:58:44 PM): ok, just hoping you might tell what gave you that feeling, what incidents. Maybe another time. :-)
luthien@vfemail.net (7:58:55 PM): oh
luthien@vfemail.net (8:48:44 PM) has left the room. top
