AriehnV: Happy birthday both :-)
ArPharazonV: Other than briefly entertaining the idea of making a Silmarillion stick-figure comic...not really
AriehnV: just one week to go to holidays :-D
ArPharazonV: Had a short vacation for a day or two, birthday-related, if that counts?
VardaValar1: We'd get a kick out of seeing it, Phar

VardaValar1: Web:
VardaValar1: Currently trying to put up an art page from DeepGroover-(T) with a long and illustrated how-to.
VardaValar1: Not quite completed, but you can get an idea of it now while I'm working on it if you like? :-)
Eonwe Valar: I can wait until it's ready :}
VardaValar1: ok :-)
Eonwe Valar: Unless you're eager to show it off :}
VardaValar1: Nope, just wanted to let you know there's stuff on our site to look at that's new. : )
Eonwe Valar: :}
VardaValar1: Any other web news?
Eonwe Valar: None from me, but always something in the works, hehe.

VardaValar1: Gaming:
VardaValar1: Any non-WoW, non-LotRO gaming?

Eonwe Valar: Starcraft 2 patch 1.5 came out.
Eonwe Valar: For patch notes: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/6830760/Patch_150_Now_Live-7_31_2012
ArPharazonV: Hmm, not much. Few flashgames, few I could name, but probably shouldn't because they aren't that remarkable. Didn't do any MLP Online this week, though they are working on Windows XP fixes so I hope that'll change.
fladrifv has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya :-)
AriehnV: Aiya Ent :-)

AriehnV: quite a bit trekking this last week :-) getting used to it and more lol
fladrifv: Aiya
VardaValar1: As in walking or Star Trek Online? : )
AriehnV: hehe aye
AriehnV: trying out severlal officer careers - tactical, science, engineering
AriehnV: But like Engineer best so far
AriehnV: thats like classes
Glorfindel VG has left the room.
VardaValar1: ouch, Glor crashed offline
AriehnV: :-\
VardaValar1: Good thing we have transcripts. : )

VardaValar1: We have a number of members playing Diablo 3 including Thingol and Eowyn
VardaValar1: A little BroodWar
VardaValar1: Can't think of the game name that Bilbo and Sauron play so much, going to run downstairs and ask. : )
ArPharazonV: Now I'm curious.
VardaValar1: The two have been playing a batch of free mmo's, just because they're free. The current one is Atlantica Online. Kind of like Phar and his flashgames. :-)
VardaValar1: Fladrif, you were coming down to the wire on that chess tournament. How are you doing now?
fladrifv: looks up at the sword of damocles
VardaValar1: o oh
fladrifv: there are just a few games running
VardaValar1: Anything like an nda? :-)
fladrifv: but as its holiday seasons atm
fladrifv: most games are on hold
fladrifv: starts whispering
VardaValar1: Give you time to dig up new strategies. :-)
fladrifv: lets hope google doesnt find my log
fladrifv: so hopefully next week more news from that front
VardaValar1: *Fladrif takes a breath this week*

VardaValar1: Eonwe, anything going on with WoW?
Eonwe Valar: Darkmoon Faire started today.
Eonwe Valar: Pets, mounts, transmog items, and..
fladrifv: *ents dont breathe often but slightly more then once a week :-)*
ArPharazonV: Ahright, should do some profession quests for gold at the Faire.
ArPharazonV: and... what, Eonwe?
Eonwe Valar: fishing in the debris pools around Darkmoon Island is a good way to get quick materials and potions.
ArPharazonV: Ah, yes.
VardaValar1: Good idea, for sure.
Eonwe Valar: Last Sunday, Eonwë, Varda, and guild-friend Kaz 3-manned Trial of the Crusader 10-man. Loads of fun :}
VardaValar1: Aye, that was a hoot. :-)
Eonwe Valar: That's it from me.
AriehnV: sounds cool :-) - grats on that
Eonwe Valar: Thanks :}
VardaValar1: Thank you, Eonwe. Bunch of us can use that news. : )
Eonwe Valar: Oh, it also went on the Lothar Events page, since it was the guild's first trip into and victory over ToC :}
VardaValar1: Aye, and we have a picture of the Trial of the Crusader on the News. : )
VardaValar1: You were putting up a pic for the Games Site too, right? Easier to find there after a bit of time goes by especially.
Eonwe Valar: Already up there.
Eonwe Valar: On the Lothar Events page.
VardaValar1: Cool :-)

VardaValar1: LotRO:
VardaValar1: We kicked off August with a top raid run (which I missed by loading the minstrel too slowly): the Shadow wing of the Tower of Orthanc.
VardaValar1: Fortunately other Valarites made it in: Indis, Pippin, and Tulkas. : )
VardaValar1: So the minstrel promptly got into a Draigoch raid (kill the dragon!) and got an upgrade, no sad face for her. ;-)
VardaValar1: argh, said it wrong
VardaValar1: Shadow wing was Inds and Varda, even bigger run was Saruman himself, the one that Pippin, Indis, and Tulkas went to.
VardaValar1: The Tower of Saruman is the current top raid in the game. : )
VardaValar1: The three wings lead up to it. So that was very cool.
VardaValar1: Lots of other gaming going on all the time, new characters being made, crafting, chatting. : )
VardaValar1: Any further news, business, comments, before Tolkien?
top

VardaValar1: Tolkien:
VardaValar1: Hobbit movie news : )
ArPharazonV: Oh yes. Looking forward to see how that plays out.
VardaValar1: Peter Jackson officially stated that since they have the budget and all they need, they are going to go ahead and try to tell a more complete tale.
VardaValar1: So they are making a third movie as well.
VardaValar1: The first is done with principle shooting and in post-production. Shooting started on the second, and that's when they realized they could make a third.
VardaValar1: MTV article for those who can't see PJ's Facebook page:
VardaValar1: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1690766/hobbit-trilogy-announced.jhtml
VardaValar1: and here's PJ's:
VardaValar1: https://www.facebook.com/notes/peter-jackson/an-unexpected-journey/10151114596546558
ArPharazonV: I wonder if they'll simply be cutting their second movie in half and adding the details, or if the third will focus on something that wasn't supposed to be represented that greatly in the first two, something more in the background.
VardaValar1: They want to add more material, not cut in half.
VardaValar1: They didn't have to cut out a ton the way they feared, as they have the backing, a real luxury.
VardaValar1: Also this way they don't have to make new sets in the future. : )
VardaValar1: Re-use what they have and cut costs
ArPharazonV: Yes, well, what I meant is cutting in half the story of what htey had planned for the second movie, putting each half in a movie of its own and adding more detail around the board to get it to full length.
ArPharazonV: Sorry if that wasn't clear :-)
VardaValar1: These articles pretty much tell everything I know, haven't been keeping up with it after the initial dance around the floor. ^^
ArPharazonV: Well it was more speculation than asking you. I read the facebook post as well.
VardaValar1: okies
VardaValar1: Any further Tolkien thoughts?
Eonwe Valar: Frodod lives? :}
Eonwe Valar: Frodo even? :}
Eonwe Valar: Or too soon for that, since we're still dealing with Bilbo? :}
ArPharazonV: More Bilbo, yay!
VardaValar1: Bilbo lives!
Eonwe Valar: :}
Glorfindel VG has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: So was this the topic, or..?
VardaValar1: Welcome back Glorfindel :-)
Glorfindel VG: Thanks

VardaValar1: Topic: what werewolves did we see in Tolkien's work?
ArPharazonV: Mainly Sauron and his wolves at his tower in the Silmarillion.
VardaValar1: What vampires did we see in Tolkien's work? :-)
ArPharazonV: Thuringwethil?
ArPharazonV: Seeing a pattern here. Both related to Sauron, both hides used as disguises by Beren and Luthien.
VardaValar1: ^^
VardaValar1: Sauron took on a number of guises. Early on he was Tevildo, Prince of Cats.
ArPharazonV: Not in the same canon, mind you.
VardaValar1: For a time, he was Glaurung, but that changed later too.
ArPharazonV: Was he?
VardaValar1: The werewolf form remained to the Silmarillion time. : )
VardaValar1: And Thuringwethil remained.
VardaValar1: Tolkien covered some of the famous horror monsters in his work, as well as other fantasy types such as elves.
ArPharazonV: I do remember a sorcerer cursing Nienor with it being removed on Glaurung's death, but I'm not sure the sorcerer was ever correlated with Sauron or any of his forms, and I certainly don't remember him "being" Glaurung.
AriehnV: wasnt that Glaurung himself?
ArPharazonV: Eventually, yes. But an early version had a sorcerer instead.
AriehnV: i remember him saying something like "but you feel your worst deed inside you"
VardaValar1: Maybe the vampires and werewolves could be classified under ancient evils. : )
VardaValar1: We had the good shape-changing Beorn, bear-form.
AriehnV: or "inside your own sister " or to that resort
VardaValar1: Eonwe is looking up something cool. : )
VardaValar1: of course looking up anything in HoMe tends to take a while, heh.
ArPharazonV: Heh, especially if you're in doubt between which of the 12 installments it's in.
AriehnV: ah found the quote "But the worst of his deeds you shall feel in yourself"
VardaValar1: Phar, reminds me, Sil and Children of Hurin aren't in agreement, but we've been calling Sil canon.
VardaValar1: Pregnancy, wasn't it?
AriehnV: aye - she was pregant by Hurin
AriehnV: err Turin
ArPharazonV: I've not actually read Children of Hurin yet. It's still sitting on my shelf while I try to catch up on my Discworld. I'm afraid my reading's slowed down in books I haven't read before, due to some growing paranoia about "missing details", it's wreaking havoc with my reading time.
VardaValar1: A baby by unintentional incest, big problem for them.
VardaValar1: hehehe Phar
VardaValar1: My sympathy. Just caught up on the Dresden Files last night.
AriehnV: I ' ve got the Narn :-) NiceEdition with Illustrations from Alan Lee
ArPharazonV: I'm still hoping to read it one day soon!;-)
ArPharazonV: Preferably before PJ makes a movie out of it *grin*
AriehnV: *giggles*
AriehnV: He would do that wouldnt he?
VardaValar1: I rather expect someone will, Arien. :-)
ArPharazonV: I don't see why not. People have been joking about Silmarillion movies but I can see him taking at least some chapters out of it to blow up into a full-length movie.
AriehnV: I shall be lookinfg forward to it
ArPharazonV: Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien, the fall of Gondolin... all good options.
VardaValar1: I agree that the various stories in the Sil could all be made into movies.
VardaValar1: Making the Children of Hurin definitely helps aim that way.
ArPharazonV: Aye.
VardaValar1: I wonder if any more of them are being made into books.
VardaValar1: (trivia: Glaurung is also called Glomund in Lost Road & Other Writings)
VardaValar1: Quick comment whilst perusing index to Letters: "no mortal with the Ring could have withstood Sauron".
Eonwe Valar: OK, here's what I've got...
VardaValar1: fire away : )
Eonwe Valar: War of the Jewels (HoME 11) a version of Fëanor's landing in Endor had him attacked by both orcs *and* werewolves.
VardaValar1: Rough landing.
Eonwe Valar: I am very certain I've seen vampires named in a list of creatures bred/serving Morgoth, and initially thought it was in a mention of the "Uvanimor." Unfortunately, on quick sifting all I see at the most specific is Uvanimor = "monsters, giants, ogres" and at its least specific "creatures bred by Morgoth."
VardaValar1: That's as bad as "ancient evils". Lots of play room.
Eonwe Valar: Grey Annals for the Werewolves thing.
Eonwe Valar: Page 17 in my Houghton Mifflin hardback.
ArPharazonV: Grey Annals? That's more recent.
Eonwe Valar: That's all I have, btw :}
Eonwe Valar: In case the silence didn't make it self-evident :}
VardaValar1: Pardon, think we have a lot of books cracked open. : )
VardaValar1: *raises gavel*
VardaValar1: *poink*
top

VardaValar1: After-meeting
VardaValar1: *ponders the rubber item the gavel rebounded from*
VardaValar1: We're having power outages, the quick ones. *blesses battery back-up*
Eonwe Valar: :}
ArPharazonV: Storms?
VardaValar1: Aye. Lots of rumbling thunder since the start of the meeting and rain.
AriehnV: hmm its weird we are having the best weather in the Uk this summer hehe
VardaValar1: Grats :-)
VardaValar1: We needed the rain; it's not bad weather unless we're out in it. :-)
ArPharazonV: Bit of variation here. Sun, rain, sun, rain, all in the same day.
VardaValar1: We do that for sure! If you don't like the weather, wait a minute. : )
VardaValar1: Pleasant, partly cloudy before the meeting. Then thunder-boomer.
Eonwe Valar: Digging through Letters of Tolkien, I always like the third paragraph of Letter 246.
AriehnV: its really a bit messed up .. there was torrential rain and flood in some parts of southern Scotland and Wales and In England round Bristol
AriehnV: up here was fairly pleasant a bit cloudy , rain in the nigfht, mainly dry and nice during the day
AriehnV: The Western Isles - not known for long sunny spells have had problems with drought and had to have water delivered and there were big problems with wildfires
AriehnV: Part of the Lews Castle Estate has had some and some forested area was destroyed

VardaValar1: The new art page is up. I'll be linking it to the rest of the site next, but you see it here first!
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/art/gallery/DeepGroover/Wolfman/Wolfman.htm
VardaValar1: Scroll down for the whole thing, click any picture to enlarge it.
ArPharazonV: Ah, so this is where you got the idea for the werewolf topic.
VardaValar1: Right :-)
VardaValar1: Now linked to the Art News and general News. Artist has been emailed that it's online now. :-) And I plan to visit him sometime and see that monster!
ArPharazonV: Hm, all read... it's very impressive.
VardaValar1: Impressive that you read it all. :-)
VardaValar1: Aye, it'll win a batch of prizes for sure if he takes it out to the shows.
VardaValar1: He has so many prizes already he doesn't have room for more. : )
ArPharazonV: hehe
VardaValar1: His starting page has a shot of his trophy collection from a few years back. He's won a bunch more since then.
VardaValar1: Cool, Beleg just showed up in LotRO. : )
ArPharazonV: The.. Valarguild member?
ArPharazonV: Or the character?
fladrifv has left the room.
VardaValar1: Pardon, guild member
ArPharazonV: That makes more sense, yes.
VardaValar1: We do have session play where we get to see things that happened in the past,so it was a good question. : )
ArPharazonV: Ah, like the Caverns of Time?
VardaValar1: Kind of, aye
VardaValar1: Someone tells you a story about the past and you start living it, for instance.
ArPharazonV: Nice.
ArPharazonV: That's one way of incorporating 7000 years of history before the time of LotRO, I guess :-)
VardaValar1: The old tales : )
VardaValar1: Other ways too, but that's one.
VardaValar1: *sneaks off to raid the refrigerator*
AriehnV: Namarie all :-)
AriehnV has left the room.
ArPharazonV: saving and sending transcript
VardaValar1: Thank you, Phar :-)
VardaValar1: Get some sleep, good buddy. :-)
ArPharazonV: Will do :-)
VardaValar1: ^^
