LotRO - report from the test server
JRRT said that he was makng a mythology for England as it didn't really
have one of its own. He hoped that people would add to the mythos
with paint, stories, and more. : In what ways have you seen that happen?
You have just entered room "valarguildmeetingplace."
Eonwe Valar: Heya.
ArPharazonV: Aiya, sorry, last try on Atramedes just now ;-)
Eonwe Valar: NP.
Eonwe Valar: We'll begin shortly unless Varda beats me to it :}
VardaValar1 has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: Heya Varda :}
VardaValar1: Aiya :-)
ArPharazonV: Speak of the dev.. I mean the Valie
VardaValar1: Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!
VardaValar1: We have three new members this week.
VardaValar1: All are friends of Irmo's and Miriel's and Hurin's that
they've been gaming with in Dark Age of Camelot, and all of them are
online in LotRO right now working up their characters together.
VardaValar1: They are Annael, Celeborn, and Eol.
VardaValar1: That's a nice jump for us in one week. Irmo also tested them, which made it easy on me. :-)
VardaValar1: In other membership news, Maedhros' father passed away early Friday morning.
Eonwe Valar: My condolences to Maedhros and his family.
VardaValar1: He seems to be holding up well and has been on LotRO in
the evenings after taking care of the day's business. The family knew
it was coming and had time to come t be with him in the end. He passed
in his sleep at the hospital.
VardaValar1: Thank you, Eonwe.
VardaValar1: Does anyone else have membership news?
VardaValar1: Guess not. : )
VardaValar1: We have the three new mosaics by Elatan-(T) fka Amillo-(Valar) in the art site now:
VardaValar1: The first one on the page was already there; the new ones are just below.
VardaValar1: If you've ever tried to work with tile at all, his work is on the mind-boggling side.
VardaValar1: We also have a new story up, "Dereliction of Duty" by Jay of Lasgalen, two chapters.
VardaValar1: Eonwe, did you want to mention anything about webwork?
Eonwe Valar: Not at the moment, no.
VardaValar1: Ok, on to Gaming!:
VardaValar1: I suspect most of you are already in gaming, and I admit to having LotRO up at the moment.
VardaValar1: In non WoW, non-LotRO news, Scatha is holding open a Valar Guild branch for us on Steam so no one else can get it and would love to see other Valarites.
VardaValar1: As Eonwe mentioned in a side window, Scathas' been doing this for us for quite some time.
VardaValar1: Search in Steam for Valar Guild or for STEvil of the Big Game Hunters
VardaValar1: Any other non-WoW or non-LotRO? Maybe Fladrif has something from Second Life?
ArPharazonV: found another flashgame website I've been playing some small games on
ArPharazonV: called gamesiren.com
ArPharazonV: might want to check it out if you're bored ;-)
VardaValar1: Thanks! Other people may check into it now that you've shown it to us.
karakedi25 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Indis
VardaValar1: We're in Gaming.
VardaValar1: Indis, did you try any games outside LotRO this past week? : )
karakedi25: lotro keeps me busy enough!
karakedi25: however...when lotro time comes, I have something to report
VardaValar1: Thanks! I'll call on you!
VardaValar1: Bofur and Nob brought their mains back to Valar, very nice for us.
VardaValar1: We have plans to run some low-end heroic dungeons after
the meeting to add to the guild achievements, if we have enough people.
VardaValar1: Any other WoW news?
Eonwe Valar: Other than I hope to be exalted with the guild branch next week, no.
VardaValar1: Go Eonwe!
ArPharazonV: Sure, I've got news.
VardaValar1: Fire away, Phar.
ArPharazonV: Personal development, but still!
ArPharazonV: I've finally made it past the "initial" phase of
Cataclysm, as I see it, doing all quests and instances once, finishing
with Twilight Highlands and Grim Batol a few days ago :-)
ArPharazonV: Now the grind begins! Dailies, reputation, points of this,
points of that, and all the various profession achievements
ArPharazonV: so for me, Cata is now really getting started :-)
VardaValar1: New fun stuff for you at last! : )
ArPharazonV: ...well, it wasn't big news, but I just wanted to say it!
ArPharazonV: currently working on making 30 different cataclysm cooking products :-)
VardaValar1: That should keep you out of trouble for a while.
VardaValar1: Indis, would you like to tell your news now?
karakedi25: I have something to report...
karakedi25: (alternating with game, so may be staccato)
karakedi25: I had the chance to group up for one of the new raids
karakedi25: Ost Dunhoth in Enedwaith (on Bullroarer)
VardaValar1: That's the test server. :-)
karakedi25: fighting now...wait
AriehnV has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Arien : )
AriehnV: aiya all :-)
AriehnV: is today a chinese whisper session?
karakedi25: quick lull...
karakedi25: it's tough, and very different in a lot of ways from anything up to now
VardaValar1: Indis is trying to fight and give a report at the same time.
AriehnV: i see lol dont get yourself killed indis :-)
karakedi25: trying not to
karakedi25: got killed but not because of this
karakedi25: anyway, no radiance but a lot of new types of mechanics
karakedi25: kind of lacks coherence from a story point of vew, but it
was fun, though we couldn't beat the last but one boss (last boss isn't
VardaValar1: That would be a problem. : )
karakedi25: from a gaming point of view, there were some interesting
new challenges, especially at the end fight that we were able to reach
VardaValar1: New mechanics?
karakedi25: yes, a bit complicated to explain while fighting though
VardaValar1: ok, maybe this should wait for another time, Indis.
VardaValar1: Let us do some of the other LotRO reports.
karakedi25: having to do with platforms on which only 2 people could stand, otherwise they sink into acid water
karakedi25: to make things worse, the boss throws rocks that act like another person
karakedi25: and so on....
ArPharazonV: WoW needs a fight like that...
VardaValar1: Sounds interesting. :-)
VardaValar1: Phar, come to the LotROside....
karakedi25: lots of interesting stuff. Good use for a LM--wounds, diseases, etc.
ArPharazonV: They've got the technology, there's a quest where you have
to jump from rocks that fall... but nothing as advanced as this
VardaValar1: In our regular LotRO Monday run, we actually did two runs.
VardaValar1: I was late, but Maedhros picked up the slack and organized an epic book run
karakedi25: that was the last boss we reached, and there was other stuff before it
karakedi25: oh yes, the main boss messes with our minds and has us dream a fight with the Balrog, which we can win
VardaValar1: The run was 2.8.6 and here's a picture from Maedhros' blog:
karakedi25: (all done with the fight, which we lost, in Dark Delvings)
VardaValar1: After that book run, we did a low level book run to help
Sigurd and enjoy seeing a place we hadn't seen for a while: Skorgrim's
VardaValar1: For our Wednesday run we ran Skumfil left side taking out the spider Brumbereth,
VardaValar1: then moved to hard mode the end boss in the pit, Hwandrin. We had the victory. : )
karakedi25: That was truly impressive (I was there)
VardaValar1: We had an unscheduled Thursday run 2.4.7 The Drowned Treasury.
VardaValar1: End of my report. Go ahead, Indis.
karakedi25: We were very strategic with the Skumfil boss fight and
learned a lot while there about how to manage it. It's usually very
karakedi25: So I think the group did a great job working together in a tough instance.
VardaValar1: A warning to LotRO folks: hang onto any LI's with over 3
legacies. They won't be around anymore. Top will be three from what
karakedi25: that's true
VardaValar1: Also, we've heard we can't reclaim relics by reforging, and will have to build up another set for each weapon.
karakedi25: they're going to be very pricey on the AH, too
VardaValar1: We give that up for more ability to work with what comes up on the legendary weapon.
karakedi25: you can reclaim if you buy a scroll in the store
karakedi25: so if you want to keep them, be prepared to spend tp
karakedi25: or start saving them up and not putting them into LIs now
VardaValar1: Aye, we're saving up, and scrolls can be gotten in the regular game.
karakedi25: these are special scrolls for extracting setting from LIs before deconstructing them
VardaValar1: I trust we can pick them up in-game, not just the LotRO store.
karakedi25: not that I know of, but I could be wrong
VardaValar1: If not, they're breaking a promise, so I expect them to be in-game barter as other scrolls are.
karakedi25: which promise is that?
VardaValar1: Comment from Bilbo about WoW: he's having to go through a lot of patch notes.
VardaValar1: Indis, the LotRO store is not supposed to take the place of gaming.
VardaValar1: just supplement.
karakedi25: no, they said it would be convenience not necessity
karakedi25: but anything that replaces grinding is probably considered
convenience (grinding for relics, scrolls of empowerment etc.)
karakedi25: there's tons more coming, but probably of interest only to lotro people
VardaValar1: Is there any other news or business before we change over?
VardaValar1: JRRT said that he was makng a mythology for England as it didn't really have one of its own.
VardaValar1: He hoped that people would add to the mythos with paint, stories, and more.
VardaValar1: In what ways have you seen that happen?
Eonwe Valar: Well, there's this one group I know of,...
Eonwe Valar: Sorry, I couldn't resist.
ArPharazonV: Aye, the Valarguild's stories and art is the first thing that comes to mind.
ArPharazonV: But then again, I might be biased ;-)
VardaValar1: Good :-)
VardaValar1: I was expecting the LotRO movie to be the first thought. :-)
Eonwe Valar: They made a movie of it? :}
Eonwe Valar: (I'm ignoring the "O" up there, and so should you to understand my joke :})
ArPharazonV: I was thinking of mentioning the movie, but that didn't
really seem to add anything to it, more than it was a different way of
expressing it... but I guess that goes for the art as well.
ArPharazonV: And I suppose putting it in a different medium counts under addition as well :-)
VardaValar1: er, LotR movie, heh. : )
VardaValar1: Aye, as in putting the paint brush to it.
VardaValar1: A huge body of fan fiction is online, and some even adds to the mythos. :-)
VardaValar1: Also a lot of artwork out there.
VardaValar1: The movie artists didn't just draw for the movie.
VardaValar1: Christopher Tolkien is in my mind the greatest one to add
to the mythos with his giant effort of making the notes available in
VardaValar1: Irmo saysThe Tolkien Society, our wensite, 100 more websites:-)
VardaValar1: I am adding that it also started up music and study of languages.
VardaValar1: Kinship] Mahariel: we are speaking in chat via a product of his ideas
VardaValar1: (That's Miriel-(V))
VardaValar1: [Kinship] Mahariel: and we do if from different parts of the worl even
VardaValar1: They are heading to sleep.
Eonwe Valar: Sleep well.
ArPharazonV: Namarie to those going to sleep :-)
VardaValar1: Lots of games and especially LotRO were built on Middle-earth so we could live in it. : )
VardaValar1: Most fantasy authors owe a lot to JRRT, for making the
field popular and serious and for many of the stock things now used.
VardaValar1: Bringing back high elves, introducing orcs for two obvious ones we see everywhere.
AriehnV: I had a minor giggle about this earlier on in WoW with a guild
member on auchindoun , he pretended not to know who JRR was ;-)
AriehnV: which nearly threw me off m socks
ArPharazonV: "I thought Blizzard invented Orcs?"
Eonwe Valar: Which form of adding to Tolkien's world do you think adds
more, and which way do you personally prefer to contribute?
AriehnV: in which way do you mean?
Eonwe Valar: Art, poetry, stories, etc.
AriehnV: which creatures we would like to add to Middlearth from other games?
AriehnV: or other fantasy worlds?
Eonwe Valar: Going off of Varda's "VardaValar1 (5:03:19 PM): He hoped
that people would add to the mythos with paint, stories, and more."
VardaValar1: Then there are the works of people's hands that they love
and like to put Tolkien's language to for naming, like Ulmo's rebuilt
ship, the Hirilonde.
AriehnV: hmm , fan art and fan stories
AriehnV: i have obviously written stories within tolkien's world and
took a wee bit freedom in adding small bits and pieces which obviously
fit in , like the story of woodman which was caught by the Numenorians
in Lond Daer :-)
VardaValar1: and the fan art comes in so many forms! Drawings, paintings, sculpture, game models, mosaics
AriehnV: or the story of Isildurs sword bearer
AriehnV: who brought Narsil to Imladris
VardaValar1: Aye you did, and that's part of working with the mythos.
VardaValar1: It's really tricky trying to keep the lore just right and work in it. A fine intellectual exercise and fun reading.
AriehnV: Not to mention a certain dwarf we all know by now who went of
treasure hunting to Moria or wanted to and got rescued by gimli and
Halbarad and a small band of other dwarves :-)
VardaValar1: and some group story that most here have added to. :-)
AriehnV: aye its fun doing that , i love it once it gets going and i
love to look at art and find it impressive if folks have real life
creations or houses named after Tolkiens work
AriehnV: Music was composed as well
VardaValar1: Howard Shore for one
ArPharazonV: There's also the supplementary books, like the Atlas, not part of Tolkien's writing, but a very good addition.
VardaValar1: Aye, a whole mass of scholars doing books and papers on Tolkien's works too.
karakedi25: so it was more than a mythology for England alone--it is a
mythology for the entire English-speaking world and beyond
AriehnV: and Marco Lo Musico , a pianist who played at the Festivel in the Shire
AriehnV: yes and psychological (some of questionable validity and
background ;-) ) as well but i think they have a right to be mentioned
VardaValar1: England did influence a lot of territory. Us "colonists" for instance. :-)
karakedi25: as I said, the english-speaking world :-P
VardaValar1: And then there's all the non-English speakers who saw the
roots of his work coming form their culture that jumped in. :-)
karakedi25: indeed--so it's far more than a mythology for England, despite its deep English roots
ArPharazonV: despite the original plan for it :-)
VardaValar1: Greek mythology got a lot of translations too. :-)
AriehnV: yo my thats something else , Tolkien had so many influences in his works himself
AriehnV: including Greek isnt it? but i think mainly Germanic , Celtic inspired or Nordic even
VardaValar1: He had a ton of Nordic influence.
VardaValar1: He wasn't that fond of Celtic
AriehnV: ok more Nordic and anglo saxon then
AriehnV: i think he packed as many clultural aspects into his works as he had influences
AriehnV: i get the impression anyway
VardaValar1: He was working on the language types that fascinated him,
making stories to explain them, then that surely jumped more into the
AriehnV: phew .. stories to explain the languages thats makes sense aye :-)
AriehnV: a language needs a world to live in
karakedi25: actually he was very fond of Welsh, which is Celtic
VardaValar1: And he had a lot of them
AriehnV: languages need people who speak it ... and the other way round .. language defines a lot of a people 's identity
karakedi25: Welsh influenced Sindarin heavily
VardaValar1: He wasn't too fond of Celtic mythology.
AriehnV: Welsh .. for the elven languages .. well semitic languages for the dwarves
AriehnV: the languages of the Rohirrim would have been old Norse or old English?
karakedi25: Old English, as the stand-in for the real language
karakedi25: just as English is the stand-in for Westron
Menelvagor Valar has entered the room.
Menelvagor Valar: Aiya!
Eonwe Valar: Heya Menel.
AriehnV: aiya Menel :-)
AriehnV: we are phase discussing the influences of Tolikien on his readers and the influences he used in his stories
Menelvagor Valar: fiancée says good night :3
AriehnV: good night , lassie :-)
Menelvagor Valar: while menel's doing other things
AriehnV: whats her name anyway?
Menelvagor Valar: My name's Hannah :3
AriehnV: nice name :-)
Menelvagor Valar: yosh ^^
Menelvagor Valar: Officially it's Hannahfleur :-)
Eonwe Valar: Good night to the near-mrs.
Menelvagor Valar: She be reading it :-)
VardaValar1: I hope she enjoys it!
VardaValar1: Good night to her. :-)
ArPharazonV: Will she join us in the Guild one day, or not the gaming type? :-)
Menelvagor Valar: Oh, she's the gaming type.
ArPharazonV: and the Tolkien type?
Menelvagor Valar: just not much into LotR unfortunately.
VardaValar1: We also take writing and drawing and musical types. :-)
Menelvagor Valar: She's the drawing type :-)
Menelvagor Valar: She likes goblins most of all :-D
VardaValar1: We could use drawings of goblins.
Menelvagor Valar: I'll ask her ^^
Menelvagor Valar: Oh yes, for those whose timezones has already passed
the mark, for those who it is almost passing the mark, and to those
whose hasn't quite yet, but a bit in advance:
Menelvagor Valar: Happy Valentine's Day!
ArPharazonV: Heh, happy valentine's day to all the happy couples, and
happy monday for all those to whom valentine's day has no meaning :-)
VardaValar1: Gang, I'm going to shift it to After-meeting
VardaValar1: so the folks who need sleep can feel free to do it.
VardaValar1: *bangs gavel*
AriehnV: Habby valentines day indeed :-))
Menelvagor Valar: happy greetings from my fiancée as she is drifting towards sleep :-)
VardaValar1: Nighty night!
karakedi25: goodnight all
karakedi25 has left the room.
VardaValar1: Namarie Indis
VardaValar1: I'll be heading out as well. :-)
ArPharazonV: namarie :-)
Eonwe Valar: I'm off to WoW :}
VardaValar1: Namarie to those here, and I'll see you shortly in WoW, Eonwe. :-)
Eonwe Valar: Take care and have fun all :}
Menelvagor Valar: Hmmm... excellent idea actually :-)
Menelvagor Valar: You have any plans in WoW Eonwe?
Eonwe Valar: Guild runs if we have enough.
Menelvagor Valar: I'll come :-)
Menelvagor Valar: oh wait... I don't have a US version of Cata.
ArPharazonV: The problems of overseas gaming ;-)
VardaValar1: Go get it. ;-)
Eonwe Valar: The plan was getting some Glory of the Hero achievements
done. Still missing a few, and I'm two mounts away from 100, hehe.
Menelvagor Valar: hehe :-)
VardaValar1: Aye, Bilbo's ready, I'm headed in.
VardaValar1 has left the room.
Menelvagor Valar: Well, I suppose I could help with that... I do think
I should have enough WotLK healer gear to keep y'all healed :-)
Menelvagor Valar: oooh... might need to download a lot of patches though.
Menelvagor Valar: I'll tell you in a bit how much :-)
Menelvagor Valar: and whether I will be able to come. [Note: He made it!]
ArPharazonV: saving and sending transcript
