Silmarillion Appendix under edhel
Plural edhil.
Adanedhel, Aredhel, Gloredhel; Ost-in-Edhil, Peredhil "half elven"

Sil Appendix under el, elen for ancient words for "star".
Ele was the word the elves first used seeing the stars, meaning "behold", most primitive word, not Sindarin.
Elves are "of the stars". Elda is Quenya "of the stars", Sindarin is Edhel, pl Edhil, but strictly corresponding form is Eledh as in Eledhwen.
Under Eldar, it says Orome gave the name Eldar "People of the Stars" at first to all Elves; later referred only to those who tried to reach Valinor whether or not successful. Elves who had at any time dwelt in Aman were called High Elves Quenya Tareldar and Elves of the Light Quenya Calaquendi.
