This famous blade was made in Gondolin for use in the Goblin-Wars. Orcrist means Goblin-cleaver in the ancient tongue of Gondolin, Sindarin. The blade was again found by Thorin and Company in the stash of the trolls in (which were turned to stone by Gandalf stalling them until dawn [chapter 2, "Roast Mutton"]) and then identified by Elrond (chapter 3, "A Short Rest"). Thorin then perished in the Battle of Five Armies (chapter 17, "The Clouds Burst"). The Elvenking placed the Orcrist upon Thorin's tomb where it reached it's final resting place (chapter 18, "The Return Journey").
