Writing Challenges

Stories

Email challenge entries to Varda. (Erase the words NOSPAM.)
Please state in your email that your story is intended to answer which Challenge, or even several Challenges in the same story.
The stories are to be posted to the Valar Guild Story page, and pass the editor(s) just as must any other story.
Drabbles are always a challenge and will be added retroactively. Other stories should be written with the challenge in mind.
No deadline, as new writers are always being added to our numbers, and it's fun to mix and match challenges. If the group wishes to put in deadlines, we will.
A challenge is a shared plot-idea ("plot-bunny"), not a contest.

Drabble challenges:

Drabble: write exactly 100 words of story with a Tolkien-inspired theme. Anything else (except 200 words) is short fiction. Mentions for within 5 and within 10.
Double Drabble: write exactly 200 words of story with a Tolkien-inspired theme. Anything else (except 100 words) is short fiction. Mentions for within 5 and within 10.

Two Tolkien character challenges: (any length)

Two Characters from The Hobbit: write a story set in the times of The Hobbit, using only two of Tolkien's characters, with no outside characters. Animals and plants do not count as characters.
Two Characters from the War of the Ring: write a story set in the time of the War of the Ring, using only two of Tolkien's characters, with no outside characters. This is the One Ring in The Lord of the Rings. It begins the minute Gandalf learns from study that Frodo's ring is almost surely the One Ring, and ends when the One Ring is completely destroyed.
Two Valar: two Valar must be included as main characters in the story.

Include the line or phrase:
caught the hem of his cloak
    almost missed
in a hole in the ground
    the storm hit
