April 28, 2020. Stories of Arda.
Author's Notes:
"This story tells the origin of Ungoliant.
While many believe her to have originated as one of the Úmaiar, I
like to think that she was an Ainu corrupted by Melkor during the
Ainulindalë itself. Under this scenario therefore, she would
never have been a Maia, her fall having preceded the establishment
of the Valar and their people on Arda. I also imagine her to
be greater then the Maiar and on the same level of power as other
great Ainur. Furthermore, her initial appearance must have
been one of great beauty, as all Ainur would have been
originally. Lastly, I use her and Melkor's Quenya names since
their Valarin names are unknown and their more sinister Sindarin
versions would not yet have been applicable. Her original name
may be found in the Book of Lost Tales, part I (History of
Middle-earth series)."

Author's Notes:
"The idea for this story came when re-reading the
Silmarillion and wondering what the Úmaiar might be up to
during the ages of the Chaining of Melkor. The White Council
of the Third Age inspired the name the Black Council. Of
course, Sauron and Gothmog are the only definitive and canonical
Úmaiar, so I had to take some liberties. Fankil, Ulbandi,
Langon, and Lungorthin, I repurposed from their origins as abandoned
ideas (revealed in the Books of Lost Tales), as just other
Úmaiar- since there were more but we just don't know their
names. I decided to use Fankil as the name of the mysterious
"dark hunter" in the Silmarillion who may have been
responsible for capturing the first elves to be transformed into
orcs. Ulbandi is no longer an ogress, but under her Master,
becomes responsible for them. And Langon, I think, is
perfectly suited as Melkor's herald, as he was once the messenger
sent to parlay with the Valar. Finally, Lungorthin I envisage
as Gothmog's second-in-command (and, therefore, his successor after
the fall of Gondolin) to explain how he can be a Lord of Balrogs.
Thuringwethil and, to a much lesser extent,
Draugluin are thought by some to have been Úmaiar so I stuck with
that. As to Thuringwethil, I like to think that she was one of
the more powerful Úmaiar and I am writing more stories concerning
her.
"Lastly, I decided to use the Quenya names of
Sauron and Gothmog when they address each other since their Valarin
names- which they would have used- are unknown to us and that's the
closest I could get. I doubt they'd use Sindarin, which might
not even have been known to them yet. However, I used the
Sindarin versions of names for the rest of the text because we don't
know everyone's names in Quenya and I think it contrasts nicely to
the personal discussion between the two deputies."
Editor's note:
Fankil is an early character
of Tolkien's in the Book of Lost Tales I, son of Melkor.
Earlier names for him were Fangli and Fúkil.
Ulbandi is an early character
of Tolkien's in the Book of Lost Tales I and II, consort of
Melkor, ogress of Utumno. Gothmog, then known as Kosomot (also as
Kosmoko, Kosomok(o), was her and Melkor's son. Another name for her
was Fluithuin (bk 2).

Author's Notes:
"While many feel that Thuringwethil was a Maia,
many also believe her to have been slain - most likely by Huan or
possibly in the destruction of Tol-in-Guaroth. After all, how
else could Huan come into possession of her skin?
"However, it seems to me that
if she were Maia, then she most definitely could have
survived. The way by which she could was provided by Tolkien
himself when writing about the battle between Huan and
Wolf-Sauron. I applied the same principle here.
"For enjoyment, I used the Valarin name for
Máhanaxar, the hall of the Valar, since we know the name (found in
the Book of Lost Tales series). The way I see it, the
Valar and Maiar would use Valarin when communicating with each other
or in self-reflection just as any native speaker would use his or
her native tongue. Unfortunately, only a few Valarin names
were ever developed."
