Valar Guild's Guild-Wide Story
Setting: Places
Story > How-To > Setting: Places
Places in the story:
Eastern forests - where our elf heroes live, east of Palisor where Nuin sent them. The Noldor's return was far north and west of this area.
Palisor - region of the Great Lands where the elves awoke. (see BoLT)
Great Lake - in the west of Palisor.
Hisilome - the humans hail the elves, calling them Hisildi in Part 2. Hisilome
is a Quenya word, Hithlum is the Sindarin name, both meaning "mist-shadow".
It was called the Land of Mist because of the mists sent there by Morgoth
from Thangorodrim after the Noldor first came.
Places mentioned:
Cuivienen - where the first elves awakened after being placed on Arda
by Eru. Cuivienan was a mere, either a lake or a bay on the eastern shore
of the inland sea of Helcar at the foot of the Orocarni (Mountains of the
East) near the Wild Wood. Helcar was created when the mountain of Illuin
was overthrown by Melkor, and many waters flowed into the deep place, so
that the first of the sounds the elves heard were of water falling over stone.
Cuivienen was destroyed in the Change of the World when Eru made Arda round.
Valinor - home of the Valar and those elves who answered their call, sailed West, or died. Also called the West.
Aman - Originally the continent where Valinor lay in central Aman
west of the Pelori Mountains. The pass through the Pelori was the Calacirya.
Eldamar was a narrow coastal strip east of the Pelori, near the Calacirya.
Aman and the island, Tol Eressea, were separated from the rest of Middle-earth
when Eru made Arda round and destroyed revolting Numenor in the process.
The Isle of Balar was a piece of Tol Eressea that broke off while being used
as a ship, and remained in Middle-earth.
