Background:

This tale is set in the East of Middle-Earth during the First Age.  Anar (the Sun) is still young, as well as the race of Men.  Melkor has come among them at times, seeking to turn them to his service.  The Dark Elves, the Avari, have also encountered the Atani and have sought to teach them in their fashion.  Far East of Cuivienen, the Waters of Awakening, have Meneltir’s people traveled.  His people are those few of Finwë’s people (who were to become the Noldor) who did not choose to go to Aman.  Orcs are no surprise to them, as they have dealt with them for some time since the departure of the Eldar.  Other foul beasts have they seen as well, but they were driven back north and out of their forests before Melkor’s return to Middle-Earth.  Since then, it had been quiet for the most part.
The coming of Isil (the Moon), and Anar afterwards were indeed great signs to them, and a great peace where no evil creatures were found continued for several years after the latter.  It was during this peace that they met the Secondborn.  It was not long after that rumors came from men travelling South that another had come among Men, and that he would come that way soon.  Before he came, the fell beasts and Orcs returned to the forests, and little doubt could be left to Meneltir’s people of who this other teacher was.  Thus we find the situation as we enter our tale.
