The various names of Túrin are possibly a
representation of Túrin’s battle to escape his “doom” so that
when Gwindor revealed his true name to Finduilas he said to Gwindor: “‘In
love I hold for rescue and safe-keeping. But now you have done ill to
me, friend, to betray my right name, and call down my doom upon me,
from which I would lie hid.’ But Gwindor answered: ‘The doom lies in
yourself, not in your name.”
Adanedhel was the title given to Túrin while he lived in Nargothrond. It means “Elf-man” in Sindarin Elvish.
Agarwaen was the name taken by Túrin when he came to Nargothrond. It means “Bloodstained” in Sindarin.
Gorthol was the name taken by Túrin in the land of Dor Cúarthol. It means “Dread Helm.”
Mormegil was the title given to
Túrin while he lived in Nargothrond. It means “Black Sword” in
Sindarin. This would become the common name for Túrin among the
common folk.
Neithan was the name Túrin gave to himself when he dwelled among the outlaws. It means “The Wronged” in Sindarin.
Thurin was the name given to
Túrin by Finduilas because of the cloud of secrecy that seemed
to rest upon him, especially in his name which in fact means “The
Secret.”
Turambar was the name taken by Túrin when he dwelled in Brethil and kept the rest of his days. It means “Master of Doom.”
Túrin Turambar Dagnir Glaurunga
was the epithet written on the great grey stone on his burial mound and
the name after which Túrin was known.
Wildman of the Woods was the name taken by Túrin when he first introduced himself to the men of Brethil.
