The mushrooms he grew were a great temptation to other hobbits, including Frodo in his boyhood..
He was another hobbit with an interest in adventure, a friend of Tom Bombadil's who nick-named him "Muddy Feet".

Farmer Maggot was a hobbit, who lived in Bamfurlong with his wife, three  daughters, and more than two sons, just west of the Brandywine. Young Frodo Baggins used to steal mushrooms from Maggot's farm, and retained a  lingering fear of his dogs into  adulthood.

Farmer  Maggot assisted Frodo's journey with the Ring by providing dinner to  him and his companions, and driving them by cart from Bamfurlong to the  Ferry as a protection against Dark Riders. He was an acquaintance of Tom  Bombadil, who respected the Farmer's wisdom and knowledge.
