Lobelia is a rather odd but interesting character.
While one can’t really like
her for being a greedy harridan, she also became a reformed character
later on.
She was born a Bracegirdle of Hardbottle, but became a
Sackvillle-Baggins when she married Otho. She was also the mother of
Lotho
Lobelia was infamous for her shrewish and greedy
temperament, and was always plotting to take Bag End from Bilbo and
Frodo. Her wish was fulfilled when Frodo sold Bag End to her when he
left the Shire.
When Saruman took control of the Shire, she was one
of the few hobbits who defied the Chief’s Men. As a consequence, she
was arrested and placed in the Lockhole. After her release, many of the
hobbits cheered for her, respecting her courage. It was the first time
she had ever been popular among the hobbits of the Shire.
However, she was devastated to know of her son’s death, so she returned
possession of Bag End to Frodo, intending to live out her last days
with her family. She also left her money to him when she died, wishing
for the money to be used in helping homeless Hobbits from Lotho and
Saruman’s control of the Shire.
