[4:10 PM]Eönwë Valar: Yes you did, Sandalf.
[4:10 PM]Varda: Yes, take a look at the top of the Anniversary page and check for your photos. : )
[4:11 PM]Eönwë Valar: Once that timer is up, no more new submissions.
[4:12 PM]Eönwë Valar: I may ask for reshoots if I have trouble isolating the character, but no new characters.
[4:13 PM]Eönwë Valar: Earendil's pic is in and will be processed tonight.
[4:13 PM]Varda: Yay!
[4:13 PM]Earendil: Seriously the original file even vanished. Had to retake.

[4:30 PM]Varda: And on to...
[4:30 PM]Varda: Tolkien!
[4:31 PM]Varda: What is the difference between addiction and obsession? Are there examples of addiction and obsession in Tolkien's works?
[4:32 PM]Varda: Addiction is probably the most obvious, with that One Ring.
[4:33 PM]Léod: Thorin was obsessed with the Arkenstone, at least in the movies.
[4:33 PM]Sandalf13: wait for it...wait for it....
[4:34 PM]Sandalf13: The Hobbits are obsessed with pipeweed.
[4:34 PM]Earendil: A certain tomato eating steward of a certain city was obsessed with power and his family line wasnt he?
[4:34 PM]Sandalf13: And eating.
[4:34 PM]Léod: Multiple people seemed obsessed with the Simarils.
[4:34 PM]Varda: Just because we caught him stuck with a plate of tomatoes, he has this awful rep. : )
[4:34 PM]Earendil: (the tomato reference was a movie joke...Denethor made that tomato THREATENING...)
[4:34 PM]Léod: They might even be addicted Sandalf!
[4:35 PM]Varda: Like the blood of the young soldiers, aye
[4:35 PM]Varda: True about the Silmarils too!
[4:35 PM]Sandalf13: You are right Leod!!
[4:35 PM]Sandalf13: 🙂
[4:35 PM]Léod: And icky.
[4:35 PM]Earendil: nothing wrong with a dozen meals a day or so, it's how Hugh Jackman works out for wolverine...
[4:35 PM]Varda: The oath made it bad, for the Silmarils.
[4:36 PM]Varda: True, Earendil. All the muscle builders need a lot of food to make those.
[4:36 PM]Sandalf13: is it possible to say that Sauron was obsessed with finding the last heir of Isildur, if any sudfvived, and extirpating the entire line?
[4:36 PM]Earendil: The Silmarils are craved by so many it's easy to forget that the name of that craving is obsession.
[4:37 PM]Léod: Almost everyone who viewed the Simarils seemed to become obsessed with them.
[4:37 PM]Earendil: Because they want what the silmarils represent, the light inside of them and some piece of whence it came right?
[4:37 PM]Varda: They held the light of the Two Trees. They might have been able to save them.
[4:38 PM]Earendil: I think that counts, even if it was validly in self defense.
[4:38 PM]Léod: Pippen seemed obsessed with the palantir once he saw it. Both Merry and Pippin seemed addicted to pipeweed.
[4:39 PM]Varda: That Palantir thing was strange, aye. Too much for most to handle safely. Gandalf tried to get it away from the young Hobbit, but just that one time was too much.
[4:39 PM]Léod: I wonder if Gandalf was?
[4:39 PM]Sandalf13: As I reflect on it further, I think that Sauron had a lot of obssesions...he was one pretty messed ip dude.
[4:39 PM]Varda: Gandalf could handle it fine.
[4:40 PM]Earendil: Power, prestige, control, jewlery...he was indeed obsessed sir. That tracks.
[4:40 PM]Varda: Obsession with power to control everything: Melkor, Sauron. It is not satiable.
[4:40 PM]Léod: I meant the pipe-weed for Gandalf, not the palantir.
[4:40 PM]Varda: Addiction to the One Ring; partly caused by the One Ring itself to force the wearer to protect it while helping it, often unconsciously, to return it to Sauron and be unfulfilled without it. This is a satiable desire.
[4:40 PM]Varda: Ahh, pardon, Leod. And it did seem so.
[4:40 PM]Arien Valar: i d say the palantir tried to obsess every one that was not strong enough to control it .. i.e. not Gandalf , not Aragorn
[@Leod "I meant the pipeweed for Gandalf, not the palantir."
[4:41 PM]Earendil: Let's not give anything old Sharky accused Mithrandir of any weight, but I see where you're coming from.
[4:41 PM]Sandalf13: darth vader attends anger management
[4:41 PM]Sandalf13: Sort of like Sauron, maybe.
[4:41 PM]Varda: Gandalf went to the Shire as a kind of vacation. Being around peaceful folk. If nothing else, the pipeweed could be taken elsewhere and be a pleasant reminder.
[4:42 PM]Arien Valar: or rather Sauron used the palantir to obsess Denethor by the means of fear and doom gloom
[4:42 PM]Léod: LOL Earendil.
[4:42 PM]Arien Valar: maybe he read my holiday ad ;0?
[4:43 PM]Arien Valar: 🙂
[4:43 PM]Léod: I think Denethor was addicted on purpose by Sauron. He could not live without looking once he started.
[@Varda: "Gandalf went to the Shire as a kind of vacation. Being around peaceful folk. If nothing else, the pipeweed could be taken elsewhere..."
[4:43 PM]Earendil: Yes, I think that it was simply that Gandalf loved things that made him feel a part of the world around him as well though. He just seems so more grounded that his fellow Wizards.
[4:43 PM]Léod: It also made him think he was wiser and smarter than anyone else, and thus appealed to his pride and vanity.
[4:44 PM]Léod: Absolutely.
[4:44 PM]Léod: That was for Earendil. I'll try to use the reply function.
[4:44 PM]Earendil: (nah, I got it though)
[4:44 PM]Léod: 😄
[4:44 PM]Earendil: 😬
[4:45 PM]Léod: What do you think constituted addiction, Varda?
[4:45 PM]Léod: Any examples?
[4:45 PM]Varda: Addiction to the One Ring; partly caused by the One Ring itself to force the wearer to protect it while helping it, often unconsciously, to return it to Sauron and be unfulfilled without it. This is a satiable desire.
[4:46 PM]Varda: Obsession with power to control everything: Melkor, Sauron. It is not satiable.
[4:46 PM]Léod: Even though he resisted it's corruption better than anyone, Bilbo was almost instantly addicted (shown by him lying about it, which was out of character for him).
[4:47 PM]Earendil: I think Tolkien presents us with two different kinds of addiction:
[4:47 PM]Varda: To be slightly fair, Sauron was calling all evil to him at that time, and especially his Ring. That's why it slipped away from Gollum, probably hoping for an Orc. oopsie.
[4:48 PM]Varda: There is addiction, and there is obsession.
[4:48 PM]Earendil: 1.)that born from personal obsessions improperly tended through honest self refletion, and
[4:49 PM]Earendil: 2.)those addictions born due to powers some couldnt control like Bilbo (affected but strong to resist) and Gollum (gone moment one).
[4:49 PM]Sandalf13: There is a subtle difference between and obsession and an addiction. Addiction implies a physical component as well, so it may potentially be harder to break an addiction because of the body's dependency on that which it is addicted to. Obsessions may be slightly easier to break free of, because they may not include a physical component.
[4:50 PM]Léod: Was Ungoliant obsessed or addicted to the consumption of light and life? Or maybe was that just her nature?
[4:51 PM]Earendil: Is it interesting then that those examples represent the addiction as the effect of the ring?(leod: I think she was a creature that willfully resisted no hunger, so maybe I'm missing a third catagorey)
[4:51 PM]Earendil: What examples of dark power trapping the users existence can anyone think of?
[@Sandalf: "There is a subtle difference between obsession and an addiction. Addiction implies a physical component as well, so it ma..."
[4:52 PM]Léod: I agree that addiction implies a physical component, but it doesn't have to have one. Psychological addictions are real and I've seen them play out. Gambling for instance.
[4:53 PM]Earendil: Maybe we're all making the same point. Being the mestro, what if the mystical trap in the wringwraith's powers, the one ring or morgoth's influence (as others experienced it) are all dark magic for addiction swaps?
[4:53 PM]Earendil: As far as story devices go that is.
[@Earendil: "What examples of dark power trapping the user's existence can anyone think of?"
[4:55 PM]Léod: Maybe Saruman became addicted to power when Sauron used his own pride to make him into a tool. Also Saruman was obsessed with the very idea of the ring.
[4:55 PM]Varda: Ungoliant made un-light, apparently needed light to make it.
[@Varda: "Ungoliant made un-light, apparently needed light to make it."
[4:55 PM]Léod: So it was a part of her nature then.
[4:55 PM]Varda: Obsession involves persistent thoughts focusing on specific ideas or tasks. It involves a way to be relieved of fear, and is generally known to the person who tries to handle it with ritual behaviors, must do things a certain way. Insatiable compulsion. Fear is the root.
[@Varda: "Ungoliant made un-light, apparently needed light to make it."
[4:55 PM]Earendil: That's there's Ungoliant again, and in her unique place in the story. Man was she interesting!
[4:56 PM]Varda: Addiction involves physical or psychological dependence on substances or behaviors. It involves seeking a particular pleasurable sensation. Satiation is possible, at least for a time. The person generally hides or denies the problem. Desire is the root.
[@Earendil: "Maybe we're all making the same point. Being the mestro, what if the mystical trap in the wringwraith's powers, the one ring or..."
[4:56 PM]Léod: Interesting thought.
[@Varda: "Addiction involves physical or psychological dependence on substances or behaviors. It involves seeking a particular pleasurable s..."
[4:56 PM]Earendil: great topic today...😁
[4:56 PM]Léod: I agree, great topic, better than the one I had!
[4:57 PM]Varda: Ringbearers must deal with an addiction to the One Ring
[4:57 PM]Varda: Sauron needs his One Ring back to be whole. Being whole allows him to pursue his obsession of power, control, to be like what he might see as an improved version of Morgoth who is gone, and to feel safe for a time against the Valar.
[4:57 PM]Sandalf13: To go a bit further on my earlier comment and Varda's comments above, obsession is often cultivated within a person: since it does not necessarily satisfy a physical craving, it is repetitive thought processes that make obsessions so powerful. Addicts, on the other hand, may at times be aware that their behavior is self-destructive, but they CANNOT stop the craving, or the need, or the addiction.
[4:58 PM]Varda: They can, but it is very hard.
[4:58 PM]Sandalf13: True. Very hard.
[5:00 PM]Varda: Examples of refusing to give in to addiction or obsession; or even using the addiction/obsession against itself:
[5:01 PM]Varda: Frodo returning the One Ring to Mt. Doom, right by Sauron, thus using the Ring's programming to take it to the source of its destruction; he was supposed to have a group along with him to help with the actual destruction but only the Ringbearers got there and could not do the destruction consciously.
[5:01 PM]Léod: Galadriel refusing the ring. Gandalf refusing it also.
[5:01 PM]Léod: Sam, giving the ring back to Frodo.
[5:02 PM]Léod: Alas, Boromir failed his Will save.
[5:03 PM]Sandalf13: Aragorn also forswore taking the Ring in the Inn at Bree..."If I was after the Ring, I could have it...now!" But he did not desire the Ring, so it was easy for him to pass it up, maybe.'
[5:03 PM]Treebeard: That is why Hobbits general behavior model was picked by Gandalf. The things Hobbits loved were a good meal, a good garden, and good friends. A ring would be less likely to take them over fully.
[5:04 PM]Earendil: Awesome, and as it implies to the various ringbearers from the story there's an additional warning present I think. As has been said, obsession is a personal attitude and addiction is a condition, but perhaps we lose that both are centered around a person right? A person has to be obsessed and a person has to be addicted. I think of the drugs we use to make surgery possible, as so very many of them are opiods. Functionaly no different to your metabolism than heroine. MOST people in america will encouter them once or more in a lifetime, during dentistry or other medicine, and yet those people arent nurturing an obsession or possesed of a (forgive the pun) MAGICAL vulnerability to addiction to surgery or medicine. I think Tolkien percieved rightly that when our selves are given over to power of some kind we become slaves to it if we arent careful but we must not confuse vulnerability to something with a grievous sin.
[5:05 PM]Sandalf13: Excellent point.
[5:05 PM]Earendil: After all, if we blame the vulnerable...we have to blame Sean Bean's character and he dies way to much in films for me to hate him...
[5:05 PM]Varda: Being aware can help a person reject those conditions when they first hit.
[5:06 PM]Varda: Boromir realized what had happened after the temptation moved away from him. He tried to make amends.
[5:06 PM]Treebeard: Nice to see the lot of you again. I am headed out. Happy gaming. Namarie 🙂
[5:06 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie, Treebeard!!! Enjoy!
[5:06 PM]Varda: It is the hour (plus 6 minites!)
[5:06 PM]Arien Valar: Namarie Fangorn 🙂
[5:06 PM]Earendil: Namarie Treebeard!
[5:07 PM]Varda: the hammerpad makes a thump noise, and the gavel rushes over to make another thump noise as a cover-up
[5:07 PM]Varda: thump thump
5:07 PM]Varda: After-meeting!
[5:07 PM]Léod: Thank you all. Great ideas and discussion!
[5:07 PM]Varda: Free chat, even continued chat. : )
[5:07 PM]Léod: I need to lie down now. Namarie!
[5:07 PM]Varda: Take it easy, Leod!
[5:07 PM]Sandalf13: Great contributions, Leod!
[5:08 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie!
[5:08 PM]Earendil: Namarie Leod, get good rest! key to health.
[5:08 PM]Arien Valar: Namarie you lovely lot .. i don t know whether its addiction but i guess it is because sleep is a desire that can be satiated but it is also a basic need of the body so i don t know which 🙂
[5:09 PM]Sandalf13: I think most of us are indeed addicted to sleep!!! heh heh
[5:09 PM]Earendil: Only the cool ones...
[5:09 PM]Sandalf13: NAmarie, Arien!!! Sei gesund!!
[5:09 PM]Varda: Basic need, aye. : )
[5:09 PM]Varda: Lot of cool folks here then!
[5:09 PM]Earendil: Namarie Arien!
[5:10 PM]Varda: I need to run tend to some cooking. : ) Almost all ready.
[5:10 PM]Sandalf13: Enjoy dinner! I too must away, need to return home and get ready for the week. Will check in later!! Namarie!!!
[5:10 PM]Sandalf13: 🙂
[5:11 PM]Earendil: Namarie Sandalf, and that's me! I must away you guys, have fun!
[5:13 PM]Varda: Quick mention (ran back to the comp), Eonwe's work problems will probably hit in November. My error.
[5:13 PM]Varda: back to cooking
[October 19, 2026]
[2:26 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya, reading up.
[2:32 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, Hallow's End starting tomorrow? I'll need to check about new stuff!
[2:37 AM]Eönwë Valar: They reduced the prices of the housing decor, fortunately.
[2:37 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Good, though I did have enough to get one of each for Brewfest in the end 🙂
[2:38 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hmm, am I obsessed with WoW or addicted...?
[2:38 AM]Eönwë Valar: hehe
[2:58 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Let's say I'm addicted to the gameplay itself, but obsessed with my plans for it? 🙂
[3:09 AM]Eönwë Valar: hehe
[8:18 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Personal gaming report:
[8:19 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For (non)flashgaming, for kongregate badges of the week it's been a bit of an anniversary week, with the badges being large idlers, management games, and freemium games, which I'd normally not link.
[8:20 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: But one of them I've been playing multiple times a day for years now, to the point that it's even in my gaming list, so I'll give it a plug again 🙂
[8:23 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Spellstone is, basically, a card collection, management, strategy game. You collect cards through campaign maps, buying with gold, weekly events, 3-day challenges, etc., and then battle with other players, or more accurately, decks they have set up. Actual live PvP is possible in the arena, which gives some good rewards, but can be frustrating since the player count at lower ranks is rather small.
[8:24 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Level cards, fuse cards, collect and level up champions through flasks with stones, and you can spend money to get premium cards but you also get free shards every month to buy stuff like that in limited amounts.
[8:25 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There's a bit of a pay-to-win gap, but it's a lot smaller than it used to be, and the current (volunteer) team has been very good in making it more accessible to new players and free players in the past few years.
[8:25 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So if you like, give it a try!
[8:26 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: They also have their own dedicated discord in the kongregate server, but if you have questions you can also just ask me here 🙂
[8:26 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard gaming:
[8:29 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone:
[Level 141 on the reward track now. With new track coming in a day or so, that's going to be where it ends, maybe one or two levels more. Seems about on par with previous seasons after all.
[8:31 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The UI has been rather revamped, with a journal added with the new journey feature. Hmm, related words? 🙂 Probably both have something to do with the French jour for day!
[8:34 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The journey is so far on chapter 1 part 1, with 7 quests which I've been doing one a day of. These come on top of the event quests and daily/weekly quests, with the reward probably being somewhere at the end of the journey. Or the chapter. Kinda mandatory at this point I suppose if you want more of the story, though they don't go away until the next expansion, so you can take your time. That said, I have no idea how long it's going to be, so I'll probably try to complete a part a week just to be safe.
[8:34 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The quests are usually things that happen normally over your gameplay, but you can make decks or have playstyles that focus on them.
[8:35 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The quest event is also still going. I still need a couple of matches in the next day or so to complete it, since they are big quests.
[8:36 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Brawl this week is the Brawliseum, annoyingly enough, so I also had to spend a lot of time in battlegrounds instead. But while the first day took me 5 or 6 attempts to get in the top 4 to count as a win, the rest of the week has gone smoothly enough.
[8:37 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Warcraft Rumble:
[No new collection level yet, though I did get another leader to legendary quality! And it's my most recent one 😄
[8:38 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Ragnaros made it to 25 stars, and is now legendary, with 81 minis left to promote.
[8:38 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I also got a legendary core through being able to exchange free rare and epic cores, and only need 55 more!
[8:39 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: (Oh, forgot to mention, in Hearthstone, got my first class to 500 wins, the druid! Golden hero ability and animated standard druid skin for me, as well as some golden legendary druid cards!)
[8:41 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Anyway, in Rumble, login rewards are getting to the good stuff for the month. But the biggest thing is the Hallow's End event, with returning Darkshire missions, quests to play the Headless Horsemen and/or Batlings, in a variety of modes, and lots of rewards to get on the track, including gold, stars, and if completed, a new tower customization!
[8:43 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: To complete it you basically need to complete every challenge that gives tickets, though if you don't want to pay real money for the Blessing, or some other challenges are out of your range, spending gold on daily offers gives extra tickets. So I'll be spending some of my saved up gold trying to get that done. Cores can wait, but tower cosmetic is on a timer 🙂
[8:44 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, I actually also got a legendary core through said daily offers, so that leaves 54!
[8:45 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So between Hearthstone and Rumble stuff alone, I've been quite busy and tired this week. But I've already gotten most of the challenges done so it'll be fine.
[8:45 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:
[8:46 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Raiding continues! We've made a night out of attempting the new boss, Kithix, on heroic. It's rather difficult, more so than the Sporefall one was. But we're making progress, and in the meantime a new boss has been slain in the heroic Abyss raid as well.
[8:47 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Weekly quest is battlegrounds, with got me to honor level 151, and enough conquest currency to buy my second pvp trinket for this season. Should help a bit for future pvp weeklies this season, which are never too numerous anyway.
[8:48 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: As well as pet battles, which actually went rather smooth, as it was easy to get 5 wins.
[8:50 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Also, completed trading post for October! Got a free attire as reward, bought 2 new pets: Archmage's Familiar and Watcher of the Huntress, bought the Grovetender's masks from the playwright sets because, well, druid me, and got some of the Plum desert mog pieces because they might come in handy for a Wrath remix alt I have planned.
[8:50 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Set my currency back a bit, but hey, it's what it's there for.
[8:51 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And finally, my physical CE for WoW: Forever arrived! Complete with statue of our old friend the dwarven hunter and his bear, from the WoW and WoW: Forever intro cinematics.
[8:51 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Also some new pins including a fun compass one you can twirl around, some art pieces, and a rather large mousepad!
[8:52 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's my report for the week 🙂
[8:52 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
[8:54 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And apparently my new mouse is making life easier even for copying over my own transcript for the meeting 😄
[4:26 PM]Varda: Yay Phar 🙂
[5:33 PM]Sandalf13: A good mouse is always better than a squeaking mouse, nicht wahr?
[8:51 PM]Eönwë Valar: Final guild pic in the screenshots channel for anyone who hasn't seen it.
[9:11 PM]Varda: Thank you, Eonwe!
[9:50 PM]Eönwë Valar: MP. Thank you to all those willing to give it a go.
