[4:19 PM]Arien Valar: hi Xavier back 🙂

[4:20 PM]Varda: Thanks : )

[4:20 PM]Varda: On to

Tolkien Discussion:

[4:20 PM]Varda: Tolkien:

[4:21 PM]Varda: This one may be quick. : )

[4:21 PM]Varda: Some online chatters claimed that the LotR is not really fantasy due to a lack of magic.

[4:21 PM]Varda: I would submit that if there is any magic in it then it has magic and is a "fantasy".

[4:22 PM]Varda: Perhaps the question might really be what we consider magic.

[4:22 PM]Varda: Can we mention any act in LotR that might be considered magical?

[4:22 PM]Léod [44th], : Creation of magical tools and weapons.

[4:23 PM]Arien Valar: The definition of magic is the alteration of nature by supernatural means *nod

[4:24 PM]Eönwë Valar: I don't have it in front of me right now, but Tolkien gives us a definition for "magic" that works well enough, and essentially it's a shortcut between the visualization and the realization of something. It cuts out or reduces the work.

[4:24 PM]Léod [44th], : The raising up of wights by the use of evil spirits.

[4:24 PM]Treebeard: The view of horses among the spray from the flood that washed away the nine, wards, Gandalf... lots of magic/powers that seem magical... Bah to them.

[4:25 PM]Arien Valar: The moving of trees and changing of paths in a forest

[4:26 PM]Léod [44th], : The twisting and corruption of living forms from one into another.

[4:26 PM]Arien Valar: not to mention that trees can attack a high hedge ..

[4:27 PM]Varda: Making of the world by song.

[4:27 PM]Arien Valar: Galadriels Mirror

[4:27 PM]Varda: oops sorry, that's not LotR. /headsmack

[4:27 PM]Léod [44th], : Foresight

[4:28 PM]Varda: You guys are absolutely creaming those chatters. : )

[4:28 PM]Léod [44th], : What do you mean?

[4:28 PM]Léod [44th], : I see now

[4:28 PM]Varda: Your proof is overwhelming. Excellent job! (original question)

[4:28 PM]Léod [44th], : I had to go back and read I'm a little sleepy.

[4:29 PM]Varda: passes coffee and tea around

[4:29 PM]Léod [44th], : You even have one enchantment going against another enchantment with the breaking of the door or front gate of the White City.

[4:29 PM]Arien Valar: yeah its a bit past my usual bedtime hehe , so i absolutely feel for you Leod 😄

[4:30 PM]Léod [44th], : Thanks I've just been sick though it's not my bedtime.

[4:30 PM]Léod [44th], : I've been tired for days LOL

[4:30 PM]Arien Valar: ah hope you feel better soon

[4:30 PM]Léod [44th], : Thank you!

[4:30 PM]Varda: Thanks for coming even while you are tired, folks! And certainly doing other things as well.

[4:31 PM]Léod [44th], : I'm sure you could break magic down into divine, essential, and common or hedge magic. Not to mention as I said before the creation of items. But I'm not sure you want to go that far into the weeds.

[4:32 PM]Varda: Why not? hehe we have half an hour left.

[4:32 PM]Varda: But we do need to keep it to what Tolkien calls it, which holds the chat down from a week or two. : )

[4:32 PM]Varda: Galadriel was upset that her abilities were called magic (even though we would consider them so). Why?

[4:33 PM]Léod [44th], : I think it has to do more with nomenclature than anything else. If you are only looking at the results then it would be magic to people who didn't have access to that kind of thing. But I think Galadriel saw all of her abilities as being a part of herself.

[4:34 PM]Varda: She also didn't like the comparison of what she did to what Sauron was doing, calling both "magic".

[4:34 PM]Léod [44th], : Once again I am reminded that I should read the books again.

[4:34 PM]Varda: Hey, I need to too!

[4:35 PM]Varda: Gandalf's magic style and ability changed between his status of Grey and then White? Why?

[4:38 PM]Treebeard: Gandalf the Grey was not given the full knowledge as compared to Gandalf the White

[4:39 PM]Varda: That seems to likely be true. He did seem more knowledgable.

[4:39 PM]Varda: Still showing in an old body.

[4:40 PM]Léod [44th], : He was also working against Sauron more openly.

[4:40 PM]Varda: True

[4:40 PM]Varda: More directly

[4:40 PM]Eönwë Valar: More overt displays of power.

[4:40 PM]Varda: Why did he need an "upgrade"?

[4:40 PM]Varda: Good point.

[4:41 PM]Arien Valar: He was the leader of the fight against sauron , it was his final task and Sauron the ultimate "end boss(*#

[4:42 PM]Léod [44th], : The leader of his Order had fallen and he was the new one

[4:44 PM]Treebeard: I believed that all of the types that were more than human, orc, elf, etc "sprung up" looking exactly as they always would at the age that they first appeared - not "growing up" necessary from child size to adult size.

[4:46 PM]Varda: At the first appearance on Arda? That answers the chicken and egg question. They'd need to be able to care for themselves at the beginning.

[4:47 PM]Treebeard: Hobbits and Humans had children, but I'm not sure of mention of the others, nope not mentioned

[4:47 PM]Eönwë Valar: Elves and Dwarves are mentioned as having children too, of course.

[4:47 PM]Eönwë Valar: And Ents.

[4:48 PM]Arien Valar: i just imagine that the growing up of Elf Children goes a bit similar to dragons in wow , forgive the comparison. But we have seen Wrathion grow from a whelp to an almost full grown dragon within what ... six yeas , and his human form grew quite considerably more mature each time we met him

[4:48 PM]Varda: After the elves and orcs had appeared, they went on to having children.

[4:49 PM]Léod [44th], : But there have not been any entings in a terrible Long count of years.

[4:49 PM]Varda: There is comment on the way elves grew mentally faster than physically in the early years, but not mentioned in LotR that I know of. HoME I believe

[4:49 PM]Varda: Aye. No ent-wives, no new entlings.

[4:49 PM]Eönwë Valar: Laws and Customs among the Eldar certainly.

[4:50 PM]Treebeard: Aragorn was a child once. Not mentioning other children in a very long adventure tales seems to be unnecessarily lengthening the books.

[4:51 PM]Varda: About Gandalf, not only was Saruman fallen and needing replaced, but the other Istari had also not been doing their jobs. Gandalf was relatively alone doing the work.

[4:51 PM]Léod [44th], : I remember it's saying that he as he grew up had his companions Elladan and Elrohir. Were they already full grown and just kind of looked at him as a little brother hanger on?

[4:52 PM]Léod [44th], : I know I feel bad for gandalf when I found all that out. I mean radagast could be helpful apparently, but had basically gone native.

[4:53 PM]Léod [44th], : It's weird that my voice to text can recognize and spell gandalf and radagast but not capitalize them as names.

[4:53 PM]Varda: : )

[4:54 PM]Varda: Elladan and Elrohir were elves that had been born a very long time ago. They did see him as like a younger brother, but also the future of Arda.

[4:54 PM]Treebeard: The workings of AI are like magic, following the rules AI has

[4:55 PM]Arien Valar: Radagast was doing his job looking after the animals and nature side of things i believe? I know Saruman considered him less or lesser intelligent but new he would do the job of passing on his summons to Gandalf, and on the other hand Radagast spread the word of gathering information throuh the animals and transporting news

[4:55 PM]Varda: Aye. Radagast had moved from the original work with humans to aiding the other life-forms instead. He did help out Gandalf when asked for something specific though.

[4:56 PM]Treebeard: Ah, all just sprung up fully grown and nobody questioned it, not, ... just not necessary for the story, but Gandalf - there was never a baby Gandalf.

[4:56 PM]Léod [44th], : Lord of the rings online takes a brighter view of radagast then the books do. As far as the movies, well..

[4:58 PM]Léod [44th], : Treebeard, I think that they came over as old guys. Did they come in ships and when they landed is that when gandalf was giving his ring?

[4:58 PM]Arien Valar: I just found it hilarious , Radagast racing through the forest on a sleigh drawn by "rabbits from Rhosgobel" 🙂

[4:59 PM]Léod [44th], : Oh no I loved it! At the very least it showed that radihast could be counted on to show up when gandalf asked him to.

[4:59 PM]Léod [44th], : Rradagast I mean

[4:59 PM]Léod [44th], : Oh never mind I give up.

[4:59 PM]Arien Valar: Aye , definitely

[4:59 PM]Arien Valar: i completely agree

[4:59 PM]Léod [44th], : That part, at least, is true to the bugs.

[5:00 PM]Léod [44th], : Books

[5:00 PM]Treebeard: bugs, books, all the same to AI . Ha ha

[5:00 PM]Léod [44th], : Is it ever said what happened at the end of the story to radagast? He didn't go back over with gandalf.

[5:01 PM]Léod [44th], : I assumed that the blues were likely killed.

[5:01 PM]Arien Valar: or maybe corrupted by Sauron

[5:01 PM]Arien Valar: but as you say, it is never mentionened

[5:02 PM]Léod [44th], : Well, I'm glad that they didn't join him. At least I don't think they did.

[5:02 PM]Arien Valar: Let s hope so .

[5:03 PM]Sandalf13: Aiya All! Sorry I am so late...busy day today.

[5:03 PM]Sandalf13: I am reading up.

[5:03 PM]Léod [44th], : Aiya!

[5:03 PM]Arien Valar: Aiya !

[5:03 PM]Varda: Aiya!

[5:03 PM]Léod [44th], : Please ignore my misspellings. I'm doing this on my phone which is highly unusual for me.

[5:04 PM]Arien Valar: Don t worry .. you should see me typing on my mobile .. i guess a right gobbledigook comes over then ...

[5:04 PM]Treebeard: Not a problem.

[5:05 PM]Varda: Yes, the Istari were already Maiar in Valinor, not born in Arda. They were given old man forms because they were intended to be advisors, not warriors and leaders.

[5:05 PM]Treebeard: Nice to see everyone. Good gaming and Namarie -off to SC2 arcade.

[5:05 PM]Varda: The Blue Wizards seem to have started cults in the East.

[5:05 PM]Varda: Aiya Sandalf : )

[5:06 PM]Arien Valar: Unfortunately I have to sink behind the horizon right now ... got to get up relatively early . and good to see you , Fangorn and all !

[5:06 PM]Varda: We have reached the hour. That doesn't mean we have to stop chatting, but gives folks a chance to sleep or move on. : )

[5:06 PM]Léod [44th], : Hope to see you soon Treebeard!

[5:06 PM]Varda: gavel makes a bright light and hops on the hammerpad

[5:06 PM]Varda: Ding!!

After-meeting:

[5:08 PM]Varda: Yes, they look magical to me! Or maybe early TV with Discord...

[5:08 PM]Varda: Magi-tech? : )

[5:08 PM]Varda: Rings that one can store a part of one's power into.

[5:10 PM]Varda: A basin of water that catches power from Earendil's star in the water.

[5:10 PM]Léod [44th], : What about the oath stones?

[5:10 PM]Léod [44th], : Did they have some kind of magical virtue?

[5:11 PM]Varda: Mostly they had the idea of the oath itself, as far as I know. The curse seemed to have been directly on the oath-breakers themselves.

[5:12 PM]Varda: A reminder.

[5:12 PM]Léod [44th], : And the curse was placed on them by isildur, not by the stone.

[5:12 PM]Varda: A curse sounds like magic, too. And yes. And he was human!

[5:14 PM]Sandalf13: Any sword, such as Narsil/Anduril that can take on different colors in moonlight or sunlight must also be magical.

[5:17 PM]Léod [44th], : Wyrgende

[5:17 PM]Léod [44th], : She cursed the king of Rohan.

[5:18 PM]Léod [44th], : Yes Sandalf, I agree!

[5:18 PM]Varda: Wasn't Wyrgende just in-game? I need to look that up.

[5:19 PM]Sandalf13: I never heard of her before, either.

[5:19 PM]Varda: I have heard of her, but just in the LotRO game.

[5:20 PM]Léod [44th], : That very well may be. It all starts running together after a while.

[5:20 PM]Varda: Leod, if you can find her in any of the books, please let us know. A quick search is not finding it anywhwere else, online or my fast book index.

[5:21 PM]Sandalf13: The beginning letters remind of the O.E. "Wyrd," that means in todays English - fate or doom. We have changed the meaning of the word over time to just "weird," which is anything out of the ordinary. I can see the connection, but the semantic drift is remarkable.

[5:23 PM]Xavier: hi. what name did you need to look up? for what book?

[5:23 PM]Léod [44th], : A quick search only found her and lotro come out in which case please forgive me.

[5:24 PM]Varda: No worries. It can be confusing, the same way the movies are. I knew who you were talking about immediately.

[5:24 PM]Léod [44th], : When we were talking about the curse that came to mind. There's actually not a lot that I can see that's written about Fengel.

[5:24 PM]Léod [44th], : Just that he was greedy.

[5:24 PM]Léod [44th], : Shame on my multiple time grandson.

[5:24 PM]Varda: Happens. : )

[5:24 PM]Varda: Can't control to whom we are related. : )

[5:24 PM]Léod [44th], : Tell me about it!

[5:25 PM]Léod [44th], : I need to take a nap y'all. This was fun. I'll try to make more meetings. Thank you for the welcome back last night and lotro.

[5:25 PM]Léod [44th], : That should have been in lotro

[5:25 PM]Varda: Sleep well! Always good to have you with us. 🙂

[5:26 PM]Xavier: okay, thank you Leod,

[5:26 PM]Léod [44th], : 😃

[5:26 PM]Varda: LotRO was supposed to be mostly from the viewpoint of the hobbits, so it helps filter some stories.

[5:26 PM]Varda: Good to see you, Xavier. : )

[5:26 PM]Sandalf13: Aiya Xavier!!

[5:27 PM]Varda: Wyrgende

[5:27 PM]Varda: She is the witch in LotRO that cursed the king's line. In LotRO, it was a worry for Eomer too.

[5:27 PM]Varda: She does not appear to be in the books that we can locate quickly, at least.

[5:28 PM]Varda: A quick thing from AI says it is LotRO.

[5:28 PM]Sandalf13: It sounds to me as if LoTRO would come up with a name like Wyrgende.

[5:29 PM]Varda: Aye. They expand on the lore and do it mostly in a way that is compatible with the books, even if not in there.

[5:30 PM]Xavier: ok that the name , sure it will take me some time to find what other books I know of with that kind of information. i can verify it at least

[5:31 PM]Varda: Thanks. Really looks as if it is in-game.

[5:31 PM]Sandalf13: I must be off to get ready for the week. Namarie to all, and stay healthy!!! (Sei gesund!)

[5:31 PM]Varda: Did you have any comments on whether there is magic in the LotR books?

[5:32 PM]Varda: Namarie, Sandalf. : )

[5:36 PM]Xavier: Ie / some notes of the books, used, after author wrote them. so the timeline matches or not till later for what editions were out.

[5:58 PM]Varda: LotRO: Free Battle Potion of Restoration

[Coupon Code: RESTFULPAUSE

[through September 24th.

[6:18 PM]Varda: Earendil says hi. He hopes to pop in here later.

[6:24 PM]Varda: As promised for LotRO, here's the list of kin members that showed up in our various branches:

Peregrin branch:

Glamdring branch:

Meriadoc branch:

Angmar branch:

Mordor branch:

[8:46 PM]Varda: Annnd don't forget to give Eonwe your update on what games you play! Discord message or email are good.

[11:06 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya, reading up.

[11:24 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I don't know about the multiple colors of Narsil, but I do know that making swords glow when certain other lifeforms are near, seems like magic to me. As does a rope that can tell the intention of its owner to know whether to let go or not.

[11:26 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There are multiple aspects that I could consider part of the definition of magic that happen in the books, even if Tolkien did not define it as such. Things that break the laws of physics, things that appear to have a level of consciousness that they shouldn't. Things that should just not be possible.

[11:27 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: In fantasy, that generally boils down to magic or religion. Sometimes both 🙂

[11:28 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So did Galadriel possess magic? Maybe, but it would be inherent to her race and her background. Is that different to sorcery?

[11:30 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Perhaps sorcery as the Nazgul use it is, in contrast, drawn from another source. A darker source. Even the type that Sauron uses might not be inherent to his Maia origin, but drawn from the influence of Morgoth.

[11:31 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Perhaps the intent plays a part as well. Galadriel's wish to not be associated with sorcery might also be because of what it's used for and not just what it's derived from.

[11:36 PM]Varda: She was not a necromancer but one that tried to preserve the beauty of her remembered home. Aye. Intent sounds major, here.

[11:37 PM]Varda: Good night. : )

[11:37 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie 🙂

[September 21, 2026

[12:02 AM]Eönwë Valar: She's not in LotR, and she's not in any supplemental materials I've read (UT, HoME, NoME).

[12:02 AM]Eönwë Valar: So I'm confident in saying strictly a LotRO creation.

[6:24 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I wonder if LotRO will put in Rings of Power stuff as well 🙂

[6:24 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: If they haven't already.

[6:39 AM]Eönwë Valar: Image: Disgusted face done by Clint Eastwood.

[7:04 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Personal gaming report:

[7:05 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For (non)flashgaming, I'll give the return of Four Color Theorem - Coloring Puzzle Game"

[7:06 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: A relaxed coloring game where you test out a theorem that every map with adjacent regions will never require more than 4 different colors to separate regions.

[7:07 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There's a bunch of levels with stars to be earned for finishing it with the minimal amount of colors, but if you've done that already, don't worry: There's 3 randomized maps added every day, further demonstrating the theorem 🙂

[7:08 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: After all, if exceptions were to exist, randomization would be a good way to find them!

[7:09 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard gaming:

[7:11 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone:

[Made it to level 101 on the reward track!

[7:12 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Reaching level 100 gave me the choice of 3 remaining portraits from the tier 5 set line, and I went for Corruptor Gul'dan for warlock. A few more expansions and they'll have to introduce new ones!

[7:13 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: With the new expansion announced, a new free legendary for logging in has come as well, M.O.T.H.E.R., the robotic matron we met in Battle for Azeroth.

[7:14 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: No new quest event this week, instead they introduced a temporary event called the Black Market, headed by a hooded figure who is obviously Xal'atath.

[7:15 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: She offers some unique cosmetics for black market currency, which can be gotten from ranked games at a maximum of 900 a day. With 200 for a win and 100 for a loss, that can be a bit of a grind, but at least we're less restricted by quests!

[7:16 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The costs of the items change a little bit, probably randomly, every day, so unless you've got an excess of currency, probably best to buy low.

[7:21 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So far I've gotten the Fireside card back, an old retired card back from when they did real life events pre-covid, I think; Champion Tyrande, a priest skin with a galactic/new year skin, looking gorgeous in my opinion, but that might just be me being a fan of the theme; and the Yogg-Ramen mage skin, which is just funny 😄

[7:22 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Though the price changes, the rewards remain the same through the event, you can still get them! Personally I've got one more hero skin, a signature legendary and eventually some new expansion card packs to go.

[7:23 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Champion Tyrande" and Yogg-Ramen" are the ones I've gotten, with the latter apparently brandnew while the former was an earlier lunar festival offer.

[7:25 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There's also a new darkmoon faire going on alongside the previous one, with Mr. Bigglesworth as a centerpiece pet. For my free draw I got signature Corpse Cannons, a death knight weapon that fires ghouls.

[7:27 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And finally, the brawl is All-Star Squad, with you picking a class and a single card, getting 22 copies of it, and 8 random class cards.

[7:28 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I went with druid and Jade Idol, the infamous card that summons a bigger and bigger golem every time you use it. People generally don't last beyond a few turns 🙂

[7:29 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Diablo 4:

[While I didn't participate in the cow event (just not enough hours in a day), I did sneak in after people had unlocked the Moomento Mori mount trophy for all players, free on login, to claim that. If you can, go get it!

[7:30 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Warcraft Rumble:

[No new upgrades, alas.

[7:31 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: New pvp season has started, so I'm getting the early rewards from that, as well as almost being done with the september login track. Tomorrow will be the final reward, including the free end of track reward, which was upgraded from 5 gold to 1000 gold!

[7:31 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: That'll surely help the grind 🙂

[7:32 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I'll soon have enough gold for 4 legendary cores!

[7:32 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:

[7:33 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: More raiding, as we used the normal raid shortcut for the first time, getting me my first Ula'tek kill, before going into a heroic and killing a few bosses there. Slowly progressing there.

[7:34 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The kill got me a new decor as well, and I got some gear upgrades along the way. Nothing for tier though.

[7:34 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Weekly quest is timewalks, which I did, though I've yet to return the quest to Silvermoon and see what random loot I get from the reward.

[7:36 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Also holiday events! Pirate's Day came with a new eyepatch for a thousand gold, not too bad, and now Brewfest is going, with 2 new recolors for the brewer's set to get.

[7:38 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: This includes a red beret, which I've wanted for years for my fire mage, but only if it doesn't obscure the hair. I've yet to get and use it, but I fear the worst. Maybe they'll add the option in the future?

[7:39 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Brewfest also comes with new housing decor to get from your Neighbourhood, and a new bar tab achievement for Midnight.

[7:40 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I'll be working on all this in the next few weeks 🙂

[7:41 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's my report for the week!

[7:41 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie 🙂

[3:56 PM]Varda: Thanks, Phar. : )

[3:56 PM]Varda: Please no RoP in LotRO. Noooo
