Tolkien Discussions

[4:24 PM]Varda: Tolkien!

[4:25 PM]Varda: Before I start rattling on, did anyone have a Tolkien-related question, comment, suggestion?

[4:25 PM]Varda: Anyone still here, please type Strider

[4:25 PM]Varda: Strider

[4:25 PM]Arien Valar: Strider

[4:26 PM]Léod

[44th], : Strider

[4:26 PM]Léod

[44th], : Sorry

[4:26 PM]Varda: Yay!!

[4:26 PM]Léod

[44th], : I was reading back.

[4:26 PM]Varda: Good plan!

[4:27 PM]Léod

[44th], : As far as Umber dye, I don't know why they have been giving away dyes that are the easiest to make.

[4:27 PM]Varda: Not all have scholars that can make dye. Maybe with just one, folks will start asking our scholars to help complete coloring a set!

[4:27 PM]Varda: At least they give out the good dyes in festivals.

[4:28 PM]Varda: Such as:

[4:28 PM]Varda: Upcoming: Anniversary (19yrs!) begins 4/23 at 10am going to 5/12 at 3am Eastern.

[4:28 PM]Léod

[44th], : True, but they don't give THOSE away.

[4:28 PM]Varda: Agreed.

[4:28 PM]Varda: So here's hoping our scholars can pick up some business. 😉

[4:29 PM]Varda: Anyway, speaking of Strider...

[4:29 PM]Léod

[44th], : I agree, I have a friend who made a LOT of money on dyes that came from festivals.

[4:29 PM]Varda: We hear talk of various systems of government, many of which are unfortunately or fortunately handled depending on who is on top.

[4:29 PM]Varda: What are some examples of how Aragorn ruled?

[4:30 PM]Léod

[44th], : He'd buy, wait until the next festival then put the others on the AH.

[4:30 PM]Varda: heh

[4:30 PM]Varda: A real businessman.

[4:30 PM]Léod

[44th], : I think that he gave a measure of independence to peoples who were used to ruling themselves.

[4:31 PM]Varda: That is also done with cosmetic clothing, other nice things. So if someone misses a festival, they have that chance at goodies.

[4:31 PM]Varda: Leod, I agree. Very smart thing to do.

[4:31 PM]Léod

[44th], : IE the Shire, Rohan, likely many others.

[4:32 PM]Varda: Takes a lot of teaching to help people start ruling themselves, which he might have been working on. Pure speculation on my part, since he seemed to recognize that.

[4:32 PM]Varda: The Shire was to be left alone by humans. He even stopped his own party at the border.

[4:32 PM]Léod

[44th], : I wonder about places like Enedwaith

[4:33 PM]Varda: What would be the worst problem they would face in self-governance?

[4:33 PM]Varda: (Enedwaith)

[4:33 PM]Léod

[44th], : Constant warring between tribes.

[4:33 PM]Léod

[44th], : Drakes, they might need help with them there.

[4:34 PM]Léod

[44th], : The loss of a mutual enemy that sometimes would have them combine forces.

[4:35 PM]Léod

[44th], : Dead things, though I don't know how much of that would stay after Sauron died.

[4:35 PM]Léod

[44th], : Or was destroyed.

[4:35 PM]Varda: Maybe the drakes would be seen as a mutual enemy, and loose orcs?

[4:35 PM]Léod

[44th], : And ghosts?

[4:36 PM]Léod

[44th], : It's the lack of a central leader that would be difficult when it comes to self rule. Each tribe sees themselves as surrounded by enemies.

[4:36 PM]Varda: Constant warring between tribes would need redirected against local monsters, getting help against them. Trade would be important.

[4:37 PM]Arien Valar: I remember that aragorn put that watchman who befriended pippin in Gondor and killed the watchman in rath dinen ... oh yeah Beregond was his name if i remember right

[4:37 PM]Varda: If Aragorn can get them to see the others as trade partners, that would help. Some have more of one thing than another. Not easy.

[4:37 PM]Léod

[44th], : It would be (trade that is). If one of the tribes could convince the others that peace was good for trade and thus for them, maybe it could work.

[4:37 PM]Arien Valar: put him in the personal guard of ithilien with framair#

[4:37 PM]Varda: Aye, because what he did was for loyalty to Faramir.

[4:38 PM]Varda: Beregond, father of Bergil.

[4:38 PM]Arien Valar: he had to punish him and remove him from gondor s guard but acknowledged he did that out of loyalty and love to faramir

[4:38 PM]Varda: Aye! Aragorn ruled with understanding and fairness.

[4:39 PM]Varda: Beregond didn't get away with what he did, as it was a form of exile, that also took him far from angry families of those killed doing what they thought was their duty.

[4:39 PM]Léod

[44th], : Wisdom of both the Dunedan and the Elves.

[4:39 PM]Varda: Great combination!

[4:39 PM]Arien Valar: indeed

[4:40 PM]Varda: His wife had been an elf, so elves were treated as people rather than scary. (The Witch of the Golden Wood, for instance.)

[4:40 PM]Varda: Arwen's grandma.

[4:41 PM]Arien Valar: well she was still alive at the time and as i understand survived for a while after his death until she decided to ... leave this world

[4:41 PM]Varda: (and you thought your in-laws were something!)

[4:41 PM]Léod

[44th], : Yes indeed. Raised by Elrond, counseled by Arwen, I think elf-wisdom was well covered.

[4:42 PM]Léod

[44th], : "I'm sorry your ancestor was a what?!"

[4:42 PM]Varda: Once Arwen did not go with Elrond to the West, she made her choice to be mortal complete.

[4:42 PM]Varda: hehe

[4:42 PM]Léod

[44th], : She did, but that didn't erase her history, or her knowledge and wisdom. And a VERY long lived mortal was she.

[4:43 PM]Varda: Aye!

[4:43 PM]Léod

[44th], : Maybe not as long as her uncle, but still.

[4:43 PM]Varda: Imagine being trained by Elrond and Galadriel, as well as the other scholars in Rivendell and Lorien.

[4:43 PM]Léod

[44th], : Celeborn was no slouch either.

[4:44 PM]Varda: Although Mirkwood didn't go back and forth with Lorien, they apparently had some ties to Rivendell.

[4:44 PM]Varda: True!

[4:44 PM]Varda: That was like the warrior chief and the shaman system.

[4:45 PM]Léod

[44th], : I don't think I understood that last.

[4:45 PM]Varda: Sorry, that was an outside reference.

[4:46 PM]Varda: In many tribal groups, the chief was a warrior.

[4:46 PM]Léod

[44th], : Ah... Whew, I was doubting myself for a moment.

[4:46 PM]Varda: A priest type, shaman type would be among the group or even married.

[4:46 PM]Varda: I did wonder if Tolkien was considering that very thing.

[4:47 PM]Varda: Bringing the two types of power together in a marriage was a powerful thing.

[4:47 PM]Léod

[44th], : Interesting idea. I've never compared it to tribal groups in the LotR, I'm going to have to pay attention to that on the next readthrough.

[4:48 PM]Varda: Tolkien had such wide-ranging knowledge to pick from, that it shows. He also taught "Beowulf" for many semesters.

[4:48 PM]Arien Valar: well galadriel was a sort of shaman if you like no? she used water as a source of visions , dreams as well (maybe a source for frodo s dream of Gandalfs imprisonment?) or is that just Lotro?

[4:48 PM]Arien Valar: and spoke to animals

[4:48 PM]Varda: I was looking at Galadriel as the "shaman", in a sense.

[4:48 PM]Léod

[44th], : I almost bought his translation of Beowulf

[4:49 PM]Varda: Her Mirror of Galadriel was indeed a basin of water, in which visions of what might be were shown, whether past, present, or future.

[4:49 PM]Léod

[44th], : She is as "magical" as elves get in the trilogy.

[4:49 PM]Varda: Frodo may have been doing his own visions.

[4:50 PM]Léod

[44th], : It's that Longbottom leaf that caused those! 😄

[4:50 PM]Varda: Aye. She just didn't want her style to be seen as the same as Sauron's. So she didn't want it to be called "magic".

[4:50 PM]Varda: heh

[4:51 PM]Varda: Pipeweed is just tobacco, but hey, it was in the movies and fan fic. : )

[4:51 PM]Léod

[44th], : LOL I know.

[4:51 PM]Léod

[44th], : But it had clearly slowed Gandalf's mind, remember?

[4:51 PM]Léod

[44th], : 😄

[4:52 PM]Léod

[44th], : She was the most 'magical' other than the wizards. At least on the side of the free peoples, I think.

[4:52 PM]Varda: Only in the movie. : )

[4:52 PM]Varda: Aye, she was.

[4:53 PM]Varda: Gandalf didn't like to be confused with the charlatans or very lightly magical folk.

[4:53 PM]Varda: I'll try to find the reference.

[4:53 PM]Léod

[44th], : I imagine that Aragorn kept in contact with elves as long as any were left in Middle Earth.

[4:54 PM]Léod

[44th], : Bilbo Baggins! I am not some conjuror of cheap tricks!

[4:54 PM]Arien Valar: hehe]

[4:54 PM]Varda: I was trying to find that in the Fellowship, aye.

[4:54 PM]Arien Valar: but yeah he sure did i believe

[4:55 PM]Léod

[44th], : I think that was from the book, wasn't it? I mean I know Sir Ian said it, but I remember something like that in the book.

[4:55 PM]Varda: Now is when I wonder if a Kindle version would make a search easier? Anyone know?

[4:56 PM]Varda: Was it when Bilbo accused Gandalf of wanting the Ring for himself?

[4:58 PM]Varda: Bilbo: "I won't give my precious away, I tell you."

[4:58 PM]Varda: He even reaches for his sword.

[4:59 PM]Léod

[44th], : It will be my turn to get angry soon, and if you say that again, I shall. Then you will see Gandalf the Grey uncloaked!

[4:59 PM]Léod

[44th], : I know he said the other thing, but I can't remember when.

[4:59 PM]Varda: Gandalf's eyes flashed. "It will be my turn to get angry soon," he said. "If you say that again, I shall. Then you will see Gandalf the Grey uncloaked." He took a step toward the hobbit, and he seemed to grow tall and menacing; his shadow filled the little room.

[4:59 PM]Sandalf13: Reading up.

[4:59 PM]Varda: Aye, that was the spot I was thinking of.

[5:00 PM]Varda: hmm, maybe a Google would help find where it is.

[5:01 PM]Léod

[44th], : It might be in the Hobbit. I just don't remember.

[5:01 PM]Varda: I checked. It's movie, not book.

[5:01 PM]Varda: Entertainingly, it seems a lot of other people searched that line too!

[5:01 PM]Varda: It would have been a way to prove there were "rune-keepers" or some such for our gaming in LotRO. 😉

[5:02 PM]Léod

[44th], : Alright, I could have sworn there was something like that in one of the books.

[5:02 PM]Léod

[44th], : I don't mind being wrong, it was an iconic scene.

[5:02 PM]Varda: Not finding it nearby.

[5:03 PM]Varda: I'm not arguing with you. I thought it was there too. Movies do have a way of overwriting book memories.

[5:03 PM]Varda: A reason to re-read now and then. : )

[5:03 PM]Léod

[44th], : The prototype or whatever it's called of Rune-Keepers was Celebrimbor? (Note: Correct!)

[5:03 PM]Varda: Likely, I could check, but

[5:04 PM]Varda: the idea of using runes for magic is very old.

[5:04 PM]Léod

[44th], : True, it's been a while. But then again, I went from reading constantly to not reading at all for like three or four years, I've only recently started again.

[5:04 PM]Varda: We know even as far back as Feanor, there were runes.

[5:04 PM]Varda: He made his own system.

[5:04 PM]Sandalf13: Aragorn banished Beregond from Minas Tirith, and Beregond paled at the pronouncement of judgement. HOwever, Aragorn quickly followed up with some like "So it must be, for you are appointed to be the CAPTAIN of the White Company of Ithilien, the personal guard of Faramir, Prince of Ithilien." So Aragorn learned a lot about justice AND mercy from Elrond, yes?

[5:04 PM]Varda: Aye, Sandalf. And thanks for the quote. : )

[5:05 PM]Varda: Which gives us all Hope. : )

[5:05 PM]Sandalf13: It is from memory and probably not too accurate, but I tried.

[5:05 PM]Varda: Well, we can pull up our books, as I just did, and do some typing. We forgive typos. ; )

[5:05 PM]Arien Valar: Gandalf says in the situation where it arises "it is my turn to get angry now and you shall see gandalf the grey uncloaked. If you do you shall .." slightly paraphrased

[5:06 PM]Varda: I typed the above quote from the Fellowship.

[5:06 PM]Varda: Gandalf's statement, that is.

[5:07 PM]Arien Valar: I brought that example earlier, sandalf 🙂

[5:07 PM]Varda: Great minds... : )

[5:07 PM]Sandalf13: I was just trying to add to your comment, Arien. Beregond was more than just a member of Faramir's guard, he was its captain!

[5:08 PM]Sandalf13: And I assume he took his family with him to Ithilien.

[5:08 PM]Varda: I have to go a few minutes, outside work, but will be back for After-meeting

[5:08 PM]Varda: thonk goes the gavel

After-meeting:

[5:08 PM]Varda: After-meeting!

[5:08 PM]Sandalf13: I just finished my outside work. Got to work while the sun shines, right Arien?

[5:09 PM]Léod

[44th], : Ok, I have to go, even though I was late. Please excuse me.

[5:09 PM]Arien Valar: Indeed

[5:09 PM]Varda: Only 5pm here : )

[5:09 PM]Varda: Namarie!

[5:09 PM]Varda: Arien needs to go as well : )

[5:09 PM]Léod

[44th], : Bye!

[5:09 PM]Arien Valar: Namarie , aye )

[5:09 PM]Sandalf13: Sorry I am late....too much to do outside after the light snow on Friday.

[5:09 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie, Leod and Arien!

[5:25 PM]Varda: hmm, the movie library doesn't give the character the LotRO used for a base. Will check on the character creation.

[5:26 PM]Varda: There it is, aye. Good call, Leod!

[5:27 PM]Varda: (and I should have said Quote, End Quote on my above quote. Apologies!)

[5:28 PM]Varda: Quote about Rune-keeper: This class is inspired by the master Elf-smith Celebrimbor, whose skill with runes of power was unparalleled. End quote.

[5:28 PM]Varda: Just for fun, here's the Lore-master:

[5:29 PM]Varda: Quote: This class was inspired by Elrond Halfelven, Elf-lord and Master of Rivendell. End quote.

[5:31 PM]Varda: Thank you, Leod, for those excellent and interesting things to check into!

[5:31 PM]Varda: Namarie for now

[5:32 PM]Eönwë Valar: Heya.

[7:27 PM]Varda: Hey : )

[7:27 PM]Varda: Thanks for the Gaming news on the site! Sure helps.

[7:27 PM]Varda: Anyway, back and forth here.

[8:34 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya, reading up.

[8:52 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Loremaster reminds me of the Archivist class in D3, even though it was april fools.

[8:53 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And if tobacco doesn't slow Gandalf's mind, does it slow his lungs?

[9:57 PM]Varda: Maybe!

[April 20, 2026

[5:48 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Personal gaming report:

[5:52 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For (non)flashgaming, I give you https://www.kongregate.com/en/games/featherhatgames/a-pirate-and-his-crates a puzzle platformer inspired by another series starting with Sleepy Knight (which was also a badge this week) but I've linked that series plenty of time before, and this game maybe not as often 😉 A Pirate and his Crates – Browser Game | Kongregate Play A Pirate and his Crates directly in your browser on Kongregate. Free online gameplay—no signup or extra downloads required.

[5:53 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: You play a pirate who needs to collect all treasure chests in 15 levels, by using crates to overcome various obstacles.

[5:54 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Stand on them, jump out of them, float in them, use them to put out fire, and probably more things I don't recall right now!

[5:55 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Might take a few attempts, but lives arrrrr infinite, and if you get stuck, just press arrrrr to restart!

[6:06 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard gaming:

[6:23 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone: Level 65 on the reward track now. Getting slow progress 🙂

[6:24 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There's a new quest event going on for 3 weeks, going into the Firelands to take down Ragnaros as one of Deathwing's lieutenants. No wonder they can drag this stuff out over the entire expansion if it takes 3 weeks to take down what is not even the main villain 🙂

[6:26 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The weekly quests focus on spells, especially fire; on expensive minions, especially elementals; and higher turns, so longer games played. Makes sense in the theme.

[6:26 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And the rewards are a bunch of firey elementals with the Firelands Malfurion druid skin as the final reward.

[6:28 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There's a new darkmoon faire, with a bunch of signature cards and other stuff, and the Deathling pet as main prize. My free roll was another golden pack, though. I do wonder if the pets we've seen will come back in some way, but people would probably complain 😉

[6:29 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Brawl is another heroic arena. I'd heard that was coming, so I got my 5 wins for this week on the last day of the previous brawl, testing out more of Whizbang's decks, including priest, warlock and death knight. They were pretty fun! I had most trouble with death knight, though, which was supposed to be the easiest. Definitely not the simplest!

[6:31 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I never really tried Whizbang in my normal decks, but if this is the stuff you get from him for each class, it might be fun on occasion 🙂

[6:31 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Which could be the point of the brawl, of course. In that case, well done Blizzard!

[6:34 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Warcraft Rumble: Collection level 71 reached! Got a few cores collected to upgrade those in the queue.

[6:35 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: A new event is on the calendar, but it's still about 2 months away, so we'll just be staring at the timer 😉 Seems horde based, and if that means what I think it means, that's going to be several horde leaders up to legendary, I expect.

[6:35 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: April login reward track is almost done. In a few days we'll finally see what the new Rend Blackhand skin really looks like.

[6:36 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Pvp season is also almost done, getting the good rewards, including one of those epic cores 🙂

[6:37 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And in the heroic sigil campaign, Drakkisath defeated with blackrock and undead families. One more family to go to complete the zone, and then 25 fights remain to complete the campaign!

[6:38 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Banshees remain vital for that fight to take the molten giants, but I've gotten pretty close without them with some leaders.

[6:41 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For quality upgrades, between the epic core from pvp and a rare core from the login track, which gave me 5 needed to buy another epic, I got 2 minis to epic, Skeleton Party and Living Bomb. I rarely if ever use the latter - though maybe I should, since it's been my own weakness often enough - but the skeleton party is pretty good in several of my armies.

[6:41 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Got their talents as well.

[6:43 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And a lot of them got to 25 stars and into the epic queue: The leader Drakkisath, the plague farmer, harpies, molten giant, banshee, gargoyle, and dark iron miner. Only the troll hunter isn't at enough stars for epic yet, with 3 remaining. But I have a rare-ifier waiting for him when he shows up 🙂

[6:46 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: With practically all my minis qualified for epic, and a good bunch of them halfway to legendary, I'm probably not going to spend as much gold on the grid. It seems better to save for epic core deals in the daily offers, since 1000 gold per core is the cheapest way to get them, other than reward tracks. Rare cores in the daily offers are at least 250, so they'd be 1250 per epic, and the standard price is 1500. Seems worth saving for the epic to show up on occasion, unless I end up sitting on a lot of gold.

[6:46 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So this represents a new chapter in my spending and mini progress 🙂

[6:47 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Legendary core offers are 4000 gold, which is another discount on top of the epics required to make one. If I end up sitting on a lot of money I should probably get those as well, though I still have over a dozen in stock.

[6:47 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:

[6:49 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Leveling going so slow. Been a tired week, including tonight with the health stuff, and I didn't get much leveling time in. Did make it to level 86.

[6:50 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I think the decor hunts are over now, though. Tonight was the first time I didn't get a new one, and from what I'm reading online you can only do 50 per faction per account. Was getting some duplicate locations too, so that kinda makes sense, though I always liked the riddles and exploration. Ah well, that saves a few minutes a day I suppose.

[6:51 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I guess I don't have much reason to visit the housing section anymore for now, except when other players in our neighbourhood tell me they made something nice 🙂

[6:55 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Storywise, I started Harandar. Entered the place, met some people, they were a bit unwelcoming, so I had to do some trials and visit a delve to get their approval. In said delve, which was my first tier 2 of the season, I got Valeera to level 4 and picked up the Brann-O-Vision toy from a random sturdy chest. Yay new stuff! Also some decors along the way. After that I made some ruutani friends, who promptly got infected by the Lightbloom stuff. Poor friends. Then it was back to the main town in the zone, preparing for the next adventure.

[7:00 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Next week, the Rift of Aln, which must be linked to the Emerald Nightmare raid in some way. Aln being named after our dear worldsoul goddess was a new development though, I guess she's also linked to the Dream now. Did Freya use Azeroth's own dreamscape to create this world? It would make sense. Then what happens to the Dream when she wakes up...?

[7:01 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, I suppose the whole planet is in trouble when she does.

[7:02 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Anyway, that's my report for the week!

[7:02 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie 🙂

[8:23 AM]Varda: Thanks, Phar. : )
