[4:09 PM]Sandalf13: I saw Ar and Eonwe chatting it up as usual, especially last Wednesday.

[4:10 PM]Varda: Did you spot any of us others in Bnet?

[4:11 PM]Arien Valar: there might have been Fladrif but not conciously

[4:11 PM]Varda: Since I don't pay for bnet stuff, it's hard to put others in our various sections. Guess the only way is friend lists.

Web News

[4:12 PM]Varda: Nothing new added to the Tolkien Site this past week.

Membership 2

4:12 PM]Varda: Gaming:

[4:13 PM]Varda: Eonwe is apparently stuck working, but we can hope he will be showing up when he can.

[4:14 PM]Varda: Pallando is also away at the moment.

[4:15 PM]Varda: Luckily Eonwe set us up with gaming news.

[4:15 PM]Sandalf13: For Arien's benefit, perhaps she should know that we have a three-day weekend here in the States....Presidents Day tomorrow....so today is sort of like a holiday.

[4:15 PM]Varda: Go ahead, Sandalf

[4:15 PM]Varda: Ah, right! Good idea to mention.

[4:16 PM]Varda: The birthdays of Washington and Lincoln were combined to make one day. : )

[4:16 PM]Arien Valar: ah righrt 🙂

[4:17 PM]Varda: Making it such a general name means it will probably suffer from mission creep.

[4:17 PM]Sandalf13: For ALL the Presidents...

[4:18 PM]Arien Valar: neat .. well there will be a new public holiday in Scotland this year due to the scotland soccer team reaching the soccer world cup for the first time in 27 years :I

[4:18 PM]Sandalf13: Yay!~!

[4:18 PM]Sandalf13: Good luck!

[4:18 PM]Arien Valar: but betting that the coop wonnt close that day hehe

[4:18 PM]Arien Valar: aye thanks 😄

[4:19 PM]Varda: Congratulations to Scotland!

[4:19 PM]Sandalf13: Drink a pint for me!

[4:19 PM]Arien Valar: will do ~

[4:19 PM]Sandalf13: MAke sure it is the good stuff, however.

[4:20 PM]Arien Valar: our local brew is perfect for the purpose , Sandalf 🙂

[4:20 PM]Varda: There you go! : )

[4:20 PM]Arien Valar: i think even Hobbits would appreciate the Skye beers 🙂

[4:21 PM]Arien Valar: it comes in pints nod

[4:21 PM]Sandalf13: I am sure that they would. I may be mistaken, but wasn't one of the actors in the LoTR movies from Scotland?

[4:21 PM]Varda: Sounds right

[4:22 PM]Varda: Feel free to search for which ones were from there. Tons of actors in the movies.

[4:22 PM]Arien Valar: aye ... even one of the hobbits i think

[4:22 PM]Sandalf13: That is what I was thinking....

[4:23 PM]Varda: Billy Boyd (Pippin)

[4:23 PM]Varda: he's the one that comes to mind right off.

[4:23 PM]Arien Valar: yup

[4:23 PM]Arien Valar: it was gun

[4:23 PM]Arien Valar: him

[4:24 PM]Sandalf13: Yup.

[4:25 PM]Sandalf13: Sorry for the long blurb. It copied more than I wanted it to.

[4:25 PM]Varda: Just the url is usually enough. : )

[4:25 PM]Varda: Anyway, here's the gaming news:

[4:48 PM]Arien Valar: Imrahil showed up in lorto 😄 cool

[4:49 PM]Varda: Aye! Imrahil from about ten years back, made it through the transfer from Landroval to Peregrin. He was surprised the game let him stay in kin. : )

[4:49 PM]Varda: Gil-galad is back too, haven't seen him around much.

[4:49 PM]Arien Valar: nice one

[4:50 PM]Varda: Leod is around rarely. I guess the new stuff is bringing folks in. : )

[4:50 PM]Varda: On to

Tolkien Discussion:

[4:50 PM]Varda: Tolkien!

[4:51 PM]Varda: Eonwe had a thought we might chew on. (Tough thought)

[4:51 PM]Varda: Eonwe, go ahead.

[4:51 PM]Eönwë Valar: Thanks.

[4:51 PM]Varda: : )

[4:52 PM]Eönwë Valar: This is going to be a bit of a long setup, so bear with me before diving in.

[4:52 PM]Eönwë Valar: So for absolutely no reason at all (heh) I've been thinking about the governmental structure of Atani towns and villages in Eriador during the Second Age.

[4:54 PM]Eönwë Valar: Among those considerations would be whether they were be more similar to what we see in the Shire and Bree at the end of the Third Age, or Rohan.

[4:56 PM]Sandalf13: If I am not mistaken, the "Atani" are Men descended from the Three Houses of Men in the First Age...so it does not include ALL men. If that is the case, I would suspect they would follow a governmental architecture that resembled that of Numenor and even earlier times in the First AGe, with a king/leader head-person working in concert with a council of some type. Certainly not an elected government!

[4:58 PM]Eönwë Valar: i.e., The Shire has a Mayor as its chief magistrate. For Rohan, we don't hear about governmental structure below lhe king's house and a handful of lords in LotR, but they're steeped in Old English, and so Lord of the Rings Online uses the term "reeve" to refer to the position of chief magistrate in Rohan's villages.

[4:58 PM]Sandalf13: In that regard, The Shire might represent the most democratic government scheme in Middle-earth, as they "elected" a Mayor at the Free-fair. Of course, in Tolkien's mind, The Shire is meant to resemble England, so I am not surprised. Even in TOlkien's time, the power of the monarchy was strongly reined in.

[5:00 PM]Varda: The Shire continued to keep allegience to the King, who was nearly mythical, so the Numenoreans of the race of the King and that had his descendents, protected these continuing "subjects" as Rangers.

[5:00 PM]Eönwë Valar: (Still setting up.)

[5:00 PM]Varda: Aye, like words in real life, the meaning of Atani shifted with history.

[5:01 PM]Eönwë Valar: To be clear, the term "Atani" is the term for all Mankind. Its Sindarin form "Edain" became particularly associated with the Three Houses, but I'm using Atani in its original context. (More setup coming...)

[5:01 PM]Sandalf13: You are right, Eonwe...sensu strictu the Atani refers to ALL Men, however, it was especially used by the Elves to the refer to the Three Houses of Men...so the context in which it was used would no doubt be important.

[5:03 PM]Arien Valar: hold your horses , Sandalf 😄 let Eonwe finish his setup then you can come in to ur hearts content 🙂

[5:06 PM]Eönwë Valar: What we do know is that Men coming West didn't all make it at once or continue for the full journey, and once getting all the way to Beleriand some went back East even before the Second Age began. So we have a mix of those on the March who stopped, formed their communities and were content, and those who fled from the war with Morgoth, and either joined those communities or formed towns and villages of their own.

[5:06 PM]Eönwë Valar: So there we go, there's my setup. Speculation or quotes from sources are now welcome.

[5:06 PM]Varda: Thank you, Eonwe. : )

[5:08 PM]Varda: My books are a few states over. Would all be speculation and memory.

[5:09 PM]Arien Valar: oh i thought you could read them from no matter what distance, star lady 🙂

[5:09 PM]Varda: The parallel is interesting between the journey of the elves and of men causing different groups as they split along the trip west. But the men seemed to split more, maybe due to the speed of new generations.

[5:10 PM]Varda: hehe Arien. I will endeavor to do so!

[5:11 PM]Arien Valar: yeah i was thinking that while eonwe wrote that intro here

[5:11 PM]Arien Valar: seems like a deja vu from the elves

[5:11 PM]Arien Valar: in a way

[5:12 PM]Varda: And yet with differences that are underscored.

[5:12 PM]Varda: One is going to; one is escaping.

[5:12 PM]Arien Valar: (sorry getting tired so can t be really bothereed too with formulation elegance )

[5:12 PM]Varda: One has long generations; one has quick ones.

[5:12 PM]Varda: Elegance not required. It's just in your nature!

[5:13 PM]Varda: So the title can be expected to be of more numerous types for Men.

[5:13 PM]Arien Valar: 🙂

[5:18 PM]Varda: Arien, did some of the titles of the Atani seem familiar to you, considering where you live?

[5:22 PM]Eönwë Valar: I'm a bit fuzzy on my Rohirric lore at the moment since I haven't looked over it recently, but I recall the Eothed being kin in some manner to the Three Houses of the Edain. Just glanced at Appendix A of LotR and got reminded Eorl's anscestors claimed descent from kings of Rhovanion ruling somewhere east "beyond Mirkwood", driven west by the Wainriders, and they accounted themselves kinsmen of the kings of Gondor descended from Eldacar.

[5:23 PM]Arien Valar: well what seems a bit familiar to me in the Organisation of the rohirrim is that i know that Baden wuerttenberg during the 17th and 18th century was similar . the king had supervising posirtions called Vogt in a town or castle overseeing the fi nancial and organisatorial structures similar to the reeves in rohan

[5:23 PM]Varda: So the organization was similar, just different names.

[5:23 PM]Arien Valar: aye

[5:24 PM]Varda: Seneschal for the castle, I think, was a term. Not sure on towns.

[5:25 PM]Arien Valar: we have a historic house in Schwenningen where one of these guys lived .. therefore i know about that

[5:25 PM]Varda: Very cool

[5:26 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya, reading up.

[5:26 PM]Varda: Aiya Phar : )

[5:26 PM]Arien Valar: saying that .. at the time Schwenningen was still a small village but the house is there ^^

[5:27 PM]Arien Valar: aiya Phari 🙂

[5:27 PM]Sandalf13: It seems that from an evolutionary/biological perspective, humans living in groups (we are social animals, after all) prefer to have someone, male or female, in charge...this is a common occurrence in many of the higher animal groups....clusters/groups of many different animals seem to have some sort of leader in charge...so I think that the Atani of Tolkien lore are no different from the people of our Middle-earth, and prefer to have someone (something, maybe?) in charge.

[5:28 PM]Sandalf13: Aiya Ar.

[5:28 PM]Varda: Since this is the ancient history/legend/myth/folklore of the present day, that makes sense.

[5:28 PM]Varda: We need to give Arien a chance to catch up on sleep, but we can still chat in...

[5:28 PM]Varda: gavel clonks

After-meeting:

[5:30 PM]Arien Valar: we still have your stars , Elentari ~

[5:30 PM]Varda: They are there in the day and in the night, seen or unseen. : )

[5:31 PM]Arien Valar: but yes .. i ll have to retreat as i see my typing going to pots as well hehe

[5:31 PM]Varda: Rest well! 🙂

[5:31 PM]Arien Valar: Namarie ! and happy chatting

[5:31 PM]Varda: or fast.

[5:31 PM]Varda: (half an hour overtime)

[5:32 PM]Varda: Fangorn sat next to me, watching the conversation for a bit. : )

[5:32 PM]Eönwë Valar: Since it helps in resolving disputes and creating a clear chain of command in times of trouble (attacking marauders and the like) it makes sense.

[5:32 PM]Varda: Which way should we go? Someone says, "That way", and the mass organizes, becoming more effective.

[5:34 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Notes while reading up:

[5:35 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Arien: Grats on reaching the World Cup!

[5:35 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Fun fact about Billy Boyd: Youngest of the 4 hobbits, but oldest of the 4 hobbit actors 🙂

[5:36 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Arcantina makes me think of a flashgame I play wherein the continent is called Arcantica. Probably no relation.

[5:37 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Diablo 2: The new content is actually a paid "expansion"... I basically got it because I want the cross-game bonuses but I do aim at playing through D2 in the future 🙂

[5:45 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I think that organization is always important in a more complex group, and it just helps to have someone who's in charge of road planning, supplies distribution, and to blame if something goes wrong... 😉 Leaders are welcome even in times of peace.

[5:46 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Whether these leadership roles are elected or passed down is almost small in detail. Having respect helps either way.

[5:48 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Because in either case, if your people decide you're no longer good enough for the job... you're in trouble.

[5:49 PM]Sandalf13: A very valid point, Ar.

[5:50 PM]Eönwë Valar: I'll throw in that the chief magistrate of Laketown in the late Third Age was simply called "The Master."

[5:51 PM]Sandalf13: It is indeed easier for Men to have a leader they can blame for their problems...takes some of the pressure off each individual. I think that is why Tolkien handled the role of, for example, "the Rightful King" with such delicacy and sensitivity to both the plusses and minuses of being in such a role.

[5:51 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: An ominous title, but originally I suppose it just means he was good at his job 😄

[5:51 PM]Eönwë Valar: Not to be confused with Master Blaster, whom I have on good authority runs Bartertown.

[6:00 PM]Eönwë Valar: I must be off, but before I go... It's the 1940s. You're a detective. Another rainy night, sitting in your office, glass in one hand and lighter in the other as you contemplate your last case. Take it from there :} YouTube - Nemo's Dreamscapes

[6:00 PM]Eönwë Valar: Take care all, good night, sleep well, and have fun :}

[6:00 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Does a mysterious damsel walk through the door?

[6:00 PM]Sandalf13: Thanks, Eonwer! Looks interesting, Nanmarie!

[6:00 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!

[6:01 PM]Eönwë Valar: Dames are always walking through your door, bringin' trouble with 'em.

[6:01 PM]Sandalf13: Reminds me of Garrison Keilor reading his detective story every weekend, with his noir detective working out of an office in the Acme Building.

[6:02 PM]Sandalf13: Guy Noir, was the detective's name, I believe.

[6:02 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And then there is... Problem Sleuth. ""Homestuck | Webcomics by Andrew Hussie. A tale about a boy and his friends and a game they play together. About 8,000 pages. Don't say we didn't warn you.""

[6:03 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Be careful though, as you can lose hours of time in reading these comics 😄

[6:04 PM]Sandalf13: The first collection of skits featuring Garrison Keillor’s intrepid detective featured on A Prairie Home Companion. It’s a dark night in a city that knows how to keep its secrets, but high above the mean streets, a light burns on the 12th floor of the Acme Building, where Guy Noir—hard boiled, world-weary, yet surprisingly articulate—is trying to find the answers to life’s questions. In his big swivel chair under the bare bulb beside the beat-up gray file cabinet, he awaits the call of his clientele: the disappointed, the paranoid, the embittered, the rejected—and the hilarious. Bing videos

[6:13 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I like the sound effects 🙂

[6:13 PM]Sandalf13: The Prairie Home Companion was famous for its sound effects. I still love that show, despite all.

[6:14 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie! I shall return after dinner.

[6:14 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!

[2:44 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Personal gaming report:

[2:44 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For (non)flashgaming, I think it's been a while since I linked https://www.kongregate.com/games/TadasGloom/doodle-alive and it's back this week! Doodle Alive – Online Gameplay | Kongregate Play Doodle Alive online on Kongregate, a free web gaming platform. Open the game in seconds and start playing right away.

[2:46 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: A puzzle game where you play a little doodle come alive, making its way across a drawing table to get the diamonds. Or ruby I suppose, since it's red 🙂

[2:47 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There's keys and buttons and stuff to push around in top-down mode, but press the spacebar and suddenly the thing turns into a platformer!

[2:51 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And generally, both modes are necessary to complete the level, so use top-down to set up your platforming journey 🙂

[3:02 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard gaming:

[3:05 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone: 139 on the reward track now. New expansion, Cataclysm, has been announced, or should I say CATACLYSM as it is in every header so far.

[3:06 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Nozdormu's plan has apparently succeeded in tearing open a rift and bringing Deathwing and his elemental cronies from a timeline in which they've won and become more powerful, in an actual continuation of the timeways story.

[3:07 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So unless they're planning to go out with a bang, maintenance mode is probably a long way away after all! Still, I hope they continue with the "collect past rewards" bit. It's nice for my completionism.

[3:09 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: With new announcement, comes pre-expansion quest event! Starting with 2 weeks of "Fire and Storm" in which Ragnaros and Al'akir show up, with a focus on fire and nature spells.

[3:11 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Main rewards here are a new rewind spell, Sands of Time, and an Eternalflame Ragnaros shaman skin. Apparently, other than a popular song by the Bangles, it also refers to Ragnaros having consumed the Tree of Life in his original timeline, making him much more dangerous!

[3:14 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And for free upon login, Warmaster Blackhorn, a legendary from the upcoming expansion.

[3:14 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Brawl is Brawl of Gaudiness! Choose a class, get a random deck; all cards cost half the mana but you can only play 2 every turn.

[3:15 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: My go-to is druid since they often have more expensive cards, and rely less on combos than, for example, rogue or paladin.

[3:16 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Haven't seen many of those expensive cards, but druid has been good to me anyway as I've won almost all my games this week 🙂

[3:16 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Warcraft Rumble: No new collection level.

[3:17 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Getting more gold, and continuing down the login reward track. Apparently you can't go back up the other way of the heart-shape, instead you need to come down both sides to unlock the final reward. That makes more sense in hindview, to be honest.

[3:18 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Still, been getting lots of gold and tomes, buying lots of stars.

[3:18 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Also continued on the heroic sigil campaign, getting a horde win with Omnotron.

[3:19 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For quality upgrades, got the Core Hounds to epic, along with their final talent.

[3:19 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:

[3:21 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Odd week. No raiding, no weekly quests since apparently the quests have moved to questgivers in the new expansion which isn't out yet.

[3:23 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Love is in the Air event is now going, with new drops from the apothecaries' fight, but I've not been rewarded with either yet. Also new cosmetics, requiring 250 love tokens in total. I've done enough quests, repeating the Crushing the Crown questline, to make sure that just fighting the apothecaries every day should get me to 250 easily. So it's just bossfight, hoping for drops, and buying the cosmetics at the end of the event.

[3:24 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Lunar Festival is also starting this monday, apparently, and there appear to be new decors to unlock, though online at least there appear to be no guides to unlocking them.

[3:26 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Other than that, pre-patch event! I've gotten Calclypsia to level 20, getting a good 6 pieces of the plate armor set, and then moved on to Caligonn the shadowpriest, since cloth was lacking the most. He's gotten another piece since then, and is now level 24.

[3:27 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I should be getting close to having enough insignias to buy extra pets as well as the remaining armor sets, though I think there's weapons to get as well, so I'll keep saving with the alts a bit more 🙂

[3:28 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's my report for the week!

[3:28 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie 🙂

[4:04 AM]Eönwë Valar: Hah, just tonight remembered that stupid rocket from the LiitA bosses, been gaffing off the run for the last couple of days. Ran tonight and guess what I finally got after 2 decades?

[4:13 AM]Eönwë Valar: Warbanks are currently disabled in the US servers because there's some sort of error.

[8:54 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Grats on the rocket 😄

[7:11 PM]Eönwë Valar: Thanks :}

[9:24 PM]Eönwë Valar: Having to go hunt down each and every elder as the only way to get those coins of ancestry, and having every item taking a good chunk of said full collection of coins, makes it really difficult to want to do anything at all with the Lunar Festival in WoW.

[9:25 PM]Eönwë Valar: It's in dire need of an update.
