[4:02 PM]Varda: Arien appears to be operating in WoW
[4:03 PM]Varda: Web:
[4:04 PM]Varda: We have an article in the works on "Tuvo", by a new Tolkien-only. He might be called Orodreth-(T), but it's not settled yet, making it difficult to do a file name. But that can be worked around and probably will be.
[4:04 PM]Eönwë Valar: Heya Harbor :}
[4:04 PM]Varda: ack
[4:04 PM]Varda: Thank you
[4:06 PM]Anarion: Aiya!

[4:29 PM]Varda: Tolkien:
[4:29 PM]Varda: Shelob's YouTube Episode 17 "The Golden Wood & Meeting Galadriel" is up
[4:30 PM]Varda: Things you can do in LotRO when you're a Tolkien fan, see places and meet people from the books!
[4:31 PM]Varda: And Lothlorien, a forest setting for your story. : )
[4:31 PM]Varda: Next topic:
[4:31 PM]Varda: If you have one, speak now! Otherwise you get my rambling topic. : )
[4:32 PM]Varda: The unrestricted (more or less) Maiar.
[4:32 PM]Varda: The Istari were Maiar sent to guide but not to rule the free people to aid against Sauron, and therefore were deprived of a part of their memory and power and made to use the forms of old men. However, other Maiar who came before them did not have the same restrictions. Who were some and what might they have been doing?
[4:33 PM]Treebeard: Spies... They were spies?
[4:33 PM]Anarion: I think many of the Maiar were co-creators. The ones that come to mind first are the creators of the Ents and Dwarves
[4:34 PM]Anarion: Though acutally I think I'm thinking of Valar come to think of it
[4:34 PM]Varda: But Valar do have helping Maiar to do their projects.
[4:34 PM]Varda: They may have had Maiar helping set up the homes and other things to aid their existence in Arda.
[4:34 PM]Varda: Some of them may have been present, full power, on Arda.
[4:35 PM]Eönwë Valar: Ossë and Uinen in the Seas.
[4:36 PM]Varda: Many a mariner has met them.
[4:37 PM]Anarion: Admittedly referring to the wiki, it seems some of the Maiar were there to maintain some of the larger pieces of creation. Arien guides the Sun, for instance.
[4:38 PM]Varda: Work work
[4:38 PM]Arien Valar: one does the best one can ~
[4:39 PM]Varda: And you do well. : )
[4:39 PM]Anarion: I'm not sure any of the Maiar other than the Istari were in Middle Earth for the sake of humans or elves, rather serving the denizens of Middle Earth by tending to the land, sea, or sky.
[4:39 PM]Arien Valar: actually i am just guiding the boat on which the sun rests
[@Arien Valar
[one does the best one can ~
[4:39 PM]Anarion: ;)
[4:40 PM]Varda: The main job of the Maia was to aid the Vala(r) of their choice, the one that ran what the Maia found interesting.
[4:40 PM]Eönwë Valar: Well, there was one Maia who was there for one Elf.
[4:40 PM]Varda: Aye : )
[4:41 PM]Varda: One must wonder why Melian was present in Middle-earth. She had a reason. Maybe in service of Yavanna?
[4:41 PM]Arien Valar: well she did a lot to protect his realm didn' t she?
[4:41 PM]Varda: Yavanna might have approved of a romance.
[4:41 PM]Varda: She did!
[4:42 PM]Varda: Melian had to really care about Thingol to marry him. She would be stuck in Middle-earth until his passing from it.
[4:42 PM]Arien Valar: the Girdle of Melian , a belt of trees and bushes if i remember rightly]#
[4:42 PM]Varda: A belt of power, stopping evil from crossing, aye.
[4:44 PM]Eönwë Valar: I don't know if Yavanna would've really been all that much of a romantic.
[4:44 PM]Varda: Maybe not romantic, but understanding of wanting the partner.
[4:45 PM]Anarion: Wow, I completely forgot that about Luthien's heritage. That's actually really interesting, as since the Ainur are titled "Holy Ones" one would expect by association with Christianity that a union between someone titled thusly and a resident of Middle Earth would be quite forbidden -- though perhaps that particular set of legends might not have been known to him.
[4:46 PM]Arien Valar: Why should not the creator of Plants , especially flowers and herbs , be a romantic? I mean flowers are something you give as a sign of appreciation to someboedy you love or respect greatly
[4:48 PM]Varda: There was a lot of Nordic influence in the writing as well.
[4:48 PM]Varda: Giants were present on the Earth in those days... ok, back to our subject. : )
[4:49 PM]Eönwë Valar: I think it more that Tolkien was creating a mythology for England that would necessarily borrow from various mythologies and religions of the area as well as his own. I find it unlikely Tolkien was unfamiliar with the biblical stories of angels getting with humans, or with similar stories in Scandinavian, Norse, or even Irish traditions.
[4:49 PM]Varda: Agreed. He stated as much.
[4:50 PM]Anarion: I think you're right.
[4:51 PM]Varda: So much to draw on, and he was an expert on all that.
[@Arien Valar
[Why should not the creator of Plants , especially flowers and herbs , be a romantic? I mean flowers are something you give as a sign of appreciation to someboedy you love or respect greatly
[4:54 PM]Eönwë Valar: I look at the examples of the interactions we have with her husband Aulë, and I still contend that the population issues with Dwarves and Ents are directly related. Eru told Aulë that other than giving Dwarves life He "would in no other way amend his work." Aulë doesn't have the infinite knowledge and understanding of Eru, so Dwarves were created based on what he did know. It would be the same with Ents, based on Yavanna's knowledge. (edited)
[4:55 PM]Eönwë Valar: Ent populations problems literally begin at the relationship level, based on what we know from Treebeard.
[4:57 PM]Eönwë Valar: The Ent song about it amounts to "Ents did something to impress the Entwives, but the Entwives weren't impressed and told the Ents they already did better."
[4:57 PM]Falco FABR : Aiya!
[4:57 PM]Varda: Falco! Aiya
[4:57 PM]Anarion: Aiya, Falco
[4:57 PM]Eönwë Valar: Even if we allow for not hearing the Entwive's side, that shows a disconnect between the two.
[4:57 PM]Eönwë Valar: Heya Falco.
[4:57 PM]Arien Valar: Aiya falco
[4:58 PM]Eönwë Valar: A disconnect serious enough that the Ents haven't even seen Entwives in uncounted years.
[4:58 PM]Varda: It's interesting. We don't get to see the romantic side of Yavanna and Aule. It's hinted at between others.
[4:58 PM]Anarion: The story of the Ents seems just endlessly tragic.
[4:59 PM]Varda: I kept waiting for Merry and Pippin to tell Fangorn about the trees seen moving around the Shire, not just over the Hedge. Fangorn had said the entwives would be attracted to a place like the Shire.
[5:00 PM]Varda: Here's hoping it was mentioned "offscreen". : )
[5:00 PM]Varda: Arien and I seem to be romantics. ; )
[5:01 PM]Eönwë Valar: A discussion for another time would be to take what we know of Ents and see how it mirrors Aulë, or at least how Aulë might look to Yavanna, heh.
[5:01 PM]Varda: It seems as if you did that pretty well already. : )
[5:01 PM]Arien Valar: I dont know whether the entwives were really *walking trees" , or did Treebeard say something like that i can' t remember ... I imagine them more a bit like a walking bush or shrub ..
[5:02 PM]Anarion: I don't recall their form ever being mentioned
[5:02 PM]Varda: Fimbrethil, wand-limbed willow tree. Beloved of Fangorn.
[5:03 PM]Varda: I kind of noticed the ent lore, heh.
[5:03 PM]Eönwë Valar: Well Entwives would have to be in like form to the Ents.
[5:04 PM]Varda: The entwives were fond of the more cultivated plants, aye, and taught Men about farming, gardening. Their gardens were destroyed and became the Brown Lands. That set them to find another place.
[5:05 PM]Eönwë Valar: I think Manwë and Varda's description allows for more of a "romantic" angle: when they're together Manwë sees further and Varda hears further. They work together, and more than that they work well together. She's not telling him that she could've had his brother and he's not telling her he could've had his pick of any of the Valier.
[5:05 PM]Treebeard: The Ents were different in their way of thinking and talking. Very individual but they could fight.
[5:05 PM]Varda: HIya Treebeard. : )
[@Arien Valar
[Why should not the creator of Plants , especially flowers and herbs , be a romantic? I mean flowers are something you give as a sign of appreciation to someboedy you love or respect greatly
[5:05 PM]Anarion: So Yavanna's name is taken from "yávë". The earlier word "yáva" means “fruit, produce”. It indeed makes sense for Yavanna to approve of her Maia falling in love and being fruitful in that sense.
[5:05 PM]Varda: Aye, Eonwe.
[5:05 PM]Sandalf13: Aiya all! Just reread the talk so far. Yes, Varda, I am in agreement with you...it alwayts sounded to me as if there were Entwives wandering around the borders of the Shire...such s lovely land for them to dwell in/near.
[5:05 PM]Varda: Aiya Sandalf
[5:06 PM]Varda: That's a thought. Yavanna wanted to see produce.
[5:07 PM]Arien Valar: Aiya Sandalf , and also Namarie because , I fear, all I want rto see right now is my pillow and my duvet
[5:07 PM]Anarion: Heh, well rest well then!
[5:07 PM]Eönwë Valar: This is a case I'm not inclined to agree, since "bearing fruit" in this case means binding oneself to a physical form, and the result of such a union would seem to likewise be bound to a form, regardless of the parentage.
[5:08 PM]Arien Valar: Thanks , Anarion , i shall
[5:08 PM]Eönwë Valar: Sleep well Arien.
[5:08 PM]Cenedra: Namarie
[5:08 PM]Varda: Namarie!
[5:09 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie Arien!
[5:09 PM]Anarion: Fair enough, it is, after all, a mere word association.
[5:09 PM]Eönwë Valar: I think this is something the Ainur understood as a consequence rather than an "Oops, I'm stuck in a body now! How did this happen?"
[5:09 PM]Varda: Aye, Eonwe. And I wish I could remember where it was, but marriage did indeed bind the Maia to the Arda spouse until the spouse was no longer in Arda.
[5:10 PM]Spidey (Ungwetari/Shelob) BRIO : Mae Govannen!
[5:10 PM]Varda: Stuck on Arda, maybe not stuck in a body. Although when pregnant, probably so.
[5:10 PM]Varda: Aiya Shelob. : )
[5:10 PM]Varda: Mentioned your Goldberry meeting in LotRO. : )
[5:12 PM]Eönwë Valar: The birth of a child does seem to bind an Ainu to their body until/unless the child dies. Talked about with Melian as well as with discussions on the origins of Orcs.
[5:12 PM]Sandalf13: "All right,1' said Sam, laughing with the rest. "But what about these Tree-men, these giants, as you might call them? They do say that one bigger than a tree was seen up away beyond the North Moors not long back."
[Sam talking to the crowd at the Green Dragon, Chapter 2, Fellowship. Sam's cousin Hal did, in fact, see such a one.
[5:12 PM]Sandalf13: Had to look that one up in my FoTR.
[5:13 PM]Varda: Aye, exactly what we were referring to. Thank you for the quote!
[5:14 PM]Eönwë Valar: The pregnancy itself is likely all it takes to lock into the body, for obvious safety reasons to the infant.
[5:14 PM]Varda: Aye, Eonwe.
[5:15 PM]Sandalf13: Yet as I seem to recall, when Thingol first set eyes on Melian, she was already in a readily comprehendible Elf/Human form.
[5:15 PM]Eönwë Valar: Anyway, there's my TedTalk on why Yavanna isn't romantic, lol.
[5:15 PM]Eönwë Valar: She was already in a form, yes, but she could've shed that form and gone off back to Aman.
[5:16 PM]Varda: True
[5:16 PM]Varda: The Valar sometimes used the elf form simply because it was attractive.
[5:17 PM]Sandalf13: So if I was a Maia living/existing in Middle Earth during the First Age, why would I bother to assume an Elf/Human form at all? Before she met Thingol, Melian was probably just doing her Maia thing somewhere in Beleriand at the time...
[5:17 PM]Sandalf13: Just wondering.
[5:17 PM]Eönwë Valar: Well I've heard things that I haven't seen in the books to confirm, so until I do I won't comment on them with any certainty.
[5:17 PM]Varda: It might help with interaction, less intimidating, and not just to humanoids?
[5:17 PM]Varda: Aye, we are moving to speculation.
[5:18 PM]Sandalf13: I assume, perhaps incorrectly, that most of the Maia had no intention of mingling with Elves or Humans (or Dwarves or Hobbits?) on such an intimate level.
[5:18 PM]Varda: and it's after the hour
[5:18 PM]Varda: So gavel thump
[5:18 PM]Varda: We are in
[5:18 PM]Varda: After-meeting.
[5:18 PM]Eönwë Valar: But I would say that the Elves are walking through the forest to get to a specific place: the coast. It's possible that while Oromë was gone, they had guides, and even protectors to keep Morgoth's servants at bay.
[5:18 PM]Varda: Feel free to keep on with the Tolkien chat. : )
[5:19 PM]Varda: The elves did take instruction from the likes of Osse and Uinen, why not others?
[5:19 PM]Eönwë Valar: Maybe Melian was one of those that wasn't supposed to run into anyone, took a form similar enough so the Elves would assume she's another Elf if they saw her from a distance, and Oops! here comes that handsome devil Thingol. (edited)
[5:19 PM]Varda: Aye
[5:20 PM]Sandalf13: Given Luthien's great beauty, she had to have had two wondrously beautiful parents, yes?
[5:21 PM]Eönwë Valar: She set the Girdle of Melian around Doriath, showing she can create a zone that confuses enemies. She may have been protecting a portion of the travelling Elves with such enchantments.
[5:22 PM]Sandalf13: I still chuckle over images in my mind of Melian and Thingol flirting in the woods of Doriath...
[5:22 PM]Varda: Good point. Melian may have been doing her guard duty!
[5:26 PM]Xavier: So i have something to show you . It will take a bit for me to look it up. It's from Kelly finding a walking tree in a bit of distance it's real one of those slow moving wide loads flat trucks on a road behind the trees but it was far enough away to look like the tree itself was walking with it through a real forest. Where do you want me to post it?
[5:27 PM]Varda: Right here. : )
[5:27 PM]Xavier: Ok haha
[5:27 PM]Varda: It's great for Tolkien chat. : )
[5:28 PM]Spidey (Ungwetari/Shelob) BRIO : Oh. I got distracted. Sorry.
[5:28 PM]Varda: Feel free to post belatedly too. : )
[5:28 PM]Sandalf13: A fly in the ointment, or the web, in your case?
[5:29 PM]Xavier: Walking ent?"
[5:29 PM]Varda: You're feeling peckish?
[5:30 PM]Varda: Xavier and Kelly, that's fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
[5:31 PM]Xavier: Its like look twice moment. Haha. A Sloowww walking tree.
[5:32 PM]Sandalf13: Wow. Hard to believe there are still Ents walking around, but if we have Ent Credit Unions, there must be Ents!
[5:35 PM]Sandalf13: Ent Credit Union
[5:36 PM]Eönwë Valar: heh
[5:40 PM]Varda: Must be so. : )
[5:42 PM]Varda: Thank you all so much for showing up and the very interesting things you put into this chat!
[5:44 PM]Eönwë Valar: Always glad to make it to a meeting.
[5:44 PM]Sandalf13: I am glad to be here too, but sorry I was late.
[5:47 PM]Eönwë Valar: I must be off. Take care all, good night, sleep well, and have fun.
[5:48 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie, Eonwe!
[5:52 PM]Varda: Namarie!
[10:51 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya, reading up.
[@Varda
[That's a thought. Yavanna wanted to see produce.
[11:12 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: If you take this in the agricultural meaning, maybe the entwives shared that characteristic
[11:13 PM]Varda: Likely. Reason they were gardeners?
[11:17 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Wow, that clip of the tree "walking" is amazing
[11:18 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: As for the Maiar in Middle-earth... I'm sure some of them went there for their own enjoyment at times as well, not just for a purpose or in service of a Vala.
[11:19 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: That may have been the case for Melian as well, and being in a "mortal" form might help with the enjoyment/immersion as she did so.
[11:20 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And I was wondering if entwife-related art would be close enough to the tree/forest theme, but seeing the anniversary and the entwives mentioned in the same meeting, I think I'll take that as a sign that it's ok!
[August 18, 2025
[12:21 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Personal gaming report:
[12:22 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For (non)flashgaming, not a new one this week, but still a relaxed puzzle platformer with Kongregate - FireBlob
[12:28 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: You play a fire blob, moving around to reach each pile of firewood. The goal is to set them all on fire (at the same time, but that doesn't come into play until late).
[12:28 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Some of the platforms will be ice, which melt on being touched from top or bottom.
[12:29 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So plan your trip, and don't stand on the ice too long if there's no floor underneath!
[12:29 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Later on there'll be spikes, enemies, and switches for colored walls and platforms.
[12:29 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: But it never gets too difficult, and you can take your time otherwise
[12:34 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard gaming:
[12:34 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone:
[Level 71 on the reward track now. Steady going.
[12:38 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Second weekly quest of the event was spells, with extra points for locations and quests. I made a special quest, location and very cheap spell deck for paladin, with a bunch of secrets and buffs for the summonable minions paladin has. It was actually pretty good, and I won more with it than I expected But it was also very efficient for the quest, sometimes getting over 100 done in one match.
[12:40 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Next week will be a big one. 700 cards played, with extra points for the new expansion's cards and golden cards. Those points should really help though! And I should be able to do enough dailies to get the maximum reward.
[12:42 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Got a new class skin for the warrior, Vanndar Stormpike, for gold; as well as 2400 total levels on the reward tracks, allowing me to choose another class skin from the tier 2 class sets. Nothing really fancy remains, but Netherwind Jaina seemed quite nostalgic.
[12:42 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So I went for that for mage.
[12:43 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Brawl is a new one this week, build a deck from 2 classes. Choose a main class for the class ability, choose a second class, then you're able to use cards from both classes.
[12:44 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I was a bit lost on what to make of it, so I went online a bit and found some tips for an imbue deck using mage and druid, with a specific druid legendary and a bunch of nature spells.
[12:45 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: It was quite effective. I'm impressed by the combinations some people think of
[12:46 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Warcraft Rumble: Actually got a new collection level, 62! Through the use of some grid boosts I had laying around, 2 minis leveled up and 1 got enough stars for epic quality. That got my collection leveled neatly.
[12:48 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Those two are now on their last experience track, for 200k experience. More than double the last level, and in fact slightly more than all the other levels combined, since they double in requirement. Painful grind coming up still
[12:48 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Bit more gold through dungeon and surges, as well as the new login reward track that came in again. And I also finished the pvp reward track for the current season.
[12:49 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Also went through 4 bosses in Siege of Ironforge, getting another wildcard slot and enough valor to get 2 more leaders to diamond.
[12:49 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Maybe I should document which leaders I valor up so I have something a bit less repetitive to mention
[12:50 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Anyway, for specific mini upgrades, it's the treant and the dryad that leveled up, and the spiderlings that went to epic. Got their third talent as well.
[12:51 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:
[12:52 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Raiding started! We got the first 5 bosses on normal difficulty, with 3 remaining. Interesting place, with some fun fights.
[12:52 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I got myself a new weapon through there as well.
[12:52 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Questwise, I got the first 3 story chapters done for K'aresh, which I needed to enter the raid in the first place, as it rewards the special cloak.
[12:53 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Through raiding and delves, I also got said cloak upgraded to level 3, getting some new abilities, though most of them apply to phase-diving which I'm not really looking at right now.
[12:56 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Questing involved contacting some wastelanders, manipulating our way into their good graces and then setting up contact between them and the remains of the worldsoul so we can bring them to our side. It's all very cunning and sneaky stuff, but that's what you get when you take orders from Xalatath. I'm sure she won't betray us in the end
[12:56 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: eyes trailer for next expansion
[12:58 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Anyway, after that it was back into delves and weeklies. Weekly quest is timewalking, which I'm almost done with. Reward should give some good gear this early in the season.
[12:59 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For delves, I've completed up to tier 8 now, getting a bunch of curios and leveling Brann to 81.
[1:00 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Among them was the new delve, where I completed 2 of the 4 stories and found all the hidden chests. It's a rather confusing place with several floors, teleports and a whole bunch of optional side passages. Apparently the different stories use different sections as well.
[1:01 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Not only easy to lose track of where you're going, but also non-linear to the point that I had to backtrack and explore to find all the special enemies for the Nemesis reward box. It doesn't help that those special enemies are ethereals in a place already filled with ethereals.
[1:01 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So yeah, not my favorite delve. I'll probably focus on the other ones as soon as I get all stories done.
[1:02 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The achievement for doing all delves with all specs, which I got last season, apparently stays gotten, so I won't have to poke this place any more often than the minimal
[1:04 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, and with tier 8 at the edge of my ilevel as guideline, I started running into some trouble with dps spec and brann also in dps. So instead I went to tankspec and left him to dps. Less stressful than me as dps and relying on his potions in healspec, which reportedly are either bugged or nerfed anyway.
[1:05 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And according to my notes, last week's arena skirmish weekly got me to honor level 142
[1:05 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, and I completed the trading post, and bought some stuff.
[1:06 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There wasn't much in there that I really wanted, as I already had the pet, and the Grandmaster's Prophetic Board mount came as a free reward for completing the trading post for august.
[1:06 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There was a recolor of it for sale, but I'm not a big fan of it.
[1:07 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The chess ensembles look interesting too, but not enough for me to buy them. I did get the eyepatches though.
[1:07 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And since I spent less currency this time around than expected, I decided to buy the recurring mount, the Kor'kron Warsaber. I already had the alliance equivalent.
[1:08 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: It's always good to save up some currency for future months if this one doesn't hold too much interest
[1:09 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Next week, more raiding and delves, I'm guessing!
[1:09 AM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's my report for the week!

[3:21 AM]Eönwë Valar: Ok I'll say it: I'm ready for Legion Remix, heh.
