Discord: Valar Guild/meeting_place

Before-Meeting

[January 27, 2025]

[7:15 PM]Sandalf13: So here I am at my Timeshare, enjoying dinner, and allowing my terribly sore quads to recover. The first day of skiing just seems harder and harder, but I did get in 3 Blue slopes, 4 Black Diamond slopes, and one mixed Blue-Black slope. Not bad for the first day!

[7:44 PM]Eönwë Valar: Nice. Haven't seen any yetis up there yet, I presume?

[January 30, 2025

[5:09 PM]Sandalf13: You can see Breckenridge Ski Area on he eastern slopes of the Ten Mile Range in the distance. This picture is taken from the Bergman Bowl at Keystone, about 13,000 feet.

[February 1, 2025

[4:23 AM]Arien Valar: that looks awesome and very beautiful

[February 2, 2025

[10:20 AM]Sandalf13: It is a wonderful experience to be able to stand in such a place and take in a view like this one...the skiing was good, too.

EVE Online:

[4:10 PM]Varda: Pallando has some Eve news for us. : )

[4:10 PM]Varda: Go ahead when ready!

[4:13 PM]Pallando-Valar: The Drifters have invaded! New sites have popped up in 12 systems across new eden. There's influcne bars but they're going very slowly, and at this time it appears they'll time out before they get to 100%. We don't know much of what this means, but this seems to be maybe the first stage in an ongoing narrative. There's some consternation about the mechanics themselves, like the low influence progression and the fact that the sites are reskinned homefront operations, but perhaps the next stage will be more interesting, or this will expand in some way (or at least they'll fix the influence gain).

[4:13 PM]Pallando-Valar: The great rewards there is pretty overstated given it's just homefronts but, hey.

[4:17 PM]Pallando-Valar: (that's it)

[4:17 PM]Varda: Thank you, Pallando. : )

Landroval branch

Crickhollow branch:

Treebeard branch:

Angmar branch:

Mordor branch:

[4:32 PM]Varda: Any other gaming news? Requests? Suggestions? This is the place to ask!

[4:33 PM]Arien Valar: yeah my crickhollow stoutaxe wats a home

[4:34 PM]Varda: yay!

[4:34 PM]Varda: Fainan will pop right over there, a sec.

[4:34 PM]Varda: On to

Tolkien

[4:34 PM]Varda: Tolkien!

[4:34 PM]Varda: If anyone has a topic, go right ahead and mention! I'll be distracted for a minute, so you can get under the radar...

[4:36 PM]Varda: Oh, and on the new server, I will try to let you know if I got the Fainan name ok. It was taken by level 1 holders (not me) on some of the current servers.

[4:37 PM]Eönwë Valar: Odd that. Usually don't have a tough time getting my custom names.

[4:38 PM]Arien Valar: then change it to Faynan maybe?

[4:39 PM]Varda: On the new servers, should be no problem.

[4:39 PM]Varda: They are level 1, not elves or high elves as Fainan always is.

[4:40 PM]Eönwë Valar: Tolkien topic should you choose to accept it: Elvish accents.

[4:42 PM]Varda: Are they different between the Elvish languages, such as Quenya, Sindarin, Avarin?

[4:44 PM]Eönwë Valar: It's possible. I imagine the Noldor born in Aman, when adopting Sindarin would have a Quenyan accent.

[4:45 PM]Eönwë Valar: Haldir and the elves the Fellowship ran into on the borders of Lothlorien spoke Sindarin, but their accent was enough to make Frodo not realize that's what he was hearing.

[4:48 PM]Arien Valar: It was close enough to Sindarin that Legolas could talk with them without problems

[4:48 PM]Varda: Kind of like a Southerner and a Yankee each wondering what the other is saying? : )

[4:48 PM]Varda: Legolas would have been highly educated in the Elvish languages, one would expect.

[4:50 PM]Eönwë Valar: YouTube - My Cousin Vinny (4/5) Movie CLIP - Two "Yutes" (1992) HD

[4:50 PM]Arien Valar: I know though what you mean .. the accent in stuttgart is different to that in villingen and they are just about 90 miles apart

[4:51 PM]Varda: People in England recognize what town or city a person is from by the accent.

[@Varda

[Legolas would have been highly educated in the Elvish languages, one would expect.

[4:52 PM]Eönwë Valar: I wonder. Given the apparent bad blood the Sindar moving east would've had for the Noldor, he might not have had a lesson in Quenya. At least not at home.

[4:52 PM]Varda: Mirkwood and Lorien had not had much communication in a good while.

[4:53 PM]Varda: Interesting. So maybe at Rivendell. He seems to have been quite able to ride there and give a message, so maybe he had been going back and forth a fair bit.

[4:53 PM]Varda: Quenya was not an allowed language (see Thingol) but would leave an accent.

[4:54 PM]Varda: A claim was made that it was more used by Gondorian scholars than by elves. : ) Quenya was like old Latin, mostly in written form for old scrolls, manuscripts.

[@Varda

[Mirkwood and Lorien had not had much communication in a good while.

[4:54 PM]Eönwë Valar: I don't have anything off the top of my head to confirm it, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were related to the influx of Noldorin refugees from Eregion in the Second Age. One of Nimrodel's stories has her not terribly happy about that, so I can imagine how the ruling Sindarin nobility in Mirkwood would've felt.

[@Varda

[A claim was made that it was more used by Gondorian scholars than by elves. : ) Quenya was like old Latin, mostly in written form for old scrolls, manuscripts.i

[4:55 PM]Eönwë Valar: And aye, more Men using it on the regular than Elves, at a certain point.

[5:00 PM]Varda: We have reached the hour.

[5:01 PM]Varda: Right quick, was there something particular about accents that you were thinking of?

[5:01 PM]Varda: Sorry, I was afk briefly. Stuff going on in rl, but they turn me loose pretty fast. : )

[5:02 PM]Varda: the gavel hops over to the hammerpad and pops it smartly

[5:02 PM]Eönwë Valar: Mostly just what we discussed.

[5:02 PM]Varda: thwok!

[5:02 PM]Varda: hammerpad is startled by the perfectly normal and therefore unusual behavior. Gavel chortles as it returns to the shelf

Thus ends this week's meeting. Come back and see us next week!

After-Meeting

[5:03 PM]Varda: After-meeting!

[5:03 PM]Varda: okie dokie.

[5:04 PM]Varda: So what we came up with was that we could expect regional and maybe town/city accents, but understandable, since all spoke Sindarin thanks to Thingol.

[5:04 PM]Varda: A thing that could have been divisive became a unifying language. All things return to Eru's good. : )

[5:07 PM]Eönwë Valar: The Noldor seemed to be more adaptive with languages anyway, but given the baggage with Quenya that Thingol dumped on it, yeah. It didn't need to have those connotations, but control the language and all.

[5:10 PM]Arien Valar: I mean the Noldor were banned from Valinor for genocide and a mad oath so everything they brought had that negative colouring I guess.

[5:11 PM]Arien Valar: That is probably the reason why queanya was a bit shunned among elves

[5:13 PM]Eönwë Valar: Well, Thingol sent out a decree saying "anyone who speaks Quenya will be considered an unrepentant kinslayer" so that cinched it. The Noldor would've likely adopted Sindarin for commerce anyway.

[5:13 PM]Varda: Also, keeping the truth from Thingol. He lost trust.

[5:13 PM]Arien Valar: YouTube - Noldor-Blind Guardian with lyrics

[5:20 PM]Arien Valar: Namarie friends, bed time for me

[5:20 PM]Eönwë Valar: Sleep well Arien.

[5:22 PM]Varda: Namarie, Arien : )

[5:25 PM]Varda: (Add Arien to the Crickhollow group, thanks to joining during the meeting.)

[5:53 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya, a bit better than last week at least Reading up!

[6:56 PM]Varda: Aiya Phar. Good to see you. : )

[6:56 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya!

[6:57 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Currently visiting some elders for the Lunar Festival

[7:01 PM]Sandalf13: Aiya Whoever is left! I just reread the notes, and yes, I definitely recall seeing somehwere that the descendants of the Numenoreans in Arnor and Gondor studied and used Quenya more than any surviving Elves in Middle-earth.

[7:02 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I wonder if any elves were aware of that study enough to think "Hmm, maybe we should pick that up again."

[7:04 PM]Sandalf13: I am pretty sure that Galadriel, Elrond, Celeborn, and a few otyher "high" Elves still remembered Quenya, but the vast majority probably ditched it...Tolkien thought that Quenya was the Latin of Middle-earth.

[7:04 PM]Sandalf13: Erestor, Glorfindel, Lindir, and so on.\

[7:21 PM]Varda: Aye, it was like the ancient language - read it but not used for chatting. : )

[7:21 PM]Varda: It was convenient to have one language they could all speak in.

[7:21 PM]Varda: And hi : )

[7:22 PM]Sandalf13: Aiya Varda! I remember reading that the loremasters of Gondor and Arnor treasured Quenya above all other languages.

[7:22 PM]Sandalf13: I wonder, therefore, if those who understoond Quenya, and could read and write it, sort of kept it like a well-guarded secret, to be used only by those who had a need to know...not the common person.

[7:22 PM]Varda: They did read the old manuscripts that were in it. It was considered being highly educated.

[7:23 PM]Varda: In Gondor, it was a scholarly thing to do, not the usual thing. Needed it to read the really old stuff.

[7:23 PM]Varda: Denethor and Faramir could read it

[7:24 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I doubt it was kept a secret. Definitely a scholarly thing, yes, with most people not being all that much interested in it, but those who were, probably weren't restricted from access.

[7:24 PM]Sandalf13: That suggests that others on the Council of Gondor could also read and write the language.

[7:25 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Probably? Though it wasn't very practical.

[7:25 PM]Sandalf13: Practical, no...but as you pointed out, a sign of their erudition...

[7:26 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Something to brag about

[7:26 PM]Sandalf13: In Arnor, I suspect that the Chieftains and their closest counselors couold also read and write Quenya. It is clear that Aragorn could do so.

[7:26 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: They might treasure it even more. Harder for them to feel linked to their ancestry.

[7:27 PM]Sandalf13: I agree with you, as usual.

[7:27 PM]Sandalf13: Ironic how Quenya was valued more by the latter-day Men of Middle-earth more than the Elves who remained.

[7:30 PM]Varda: Useful to be able to read the older information written in Quenya

[7:31 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The elves had an alternative which I'm sure the Men had less access to, especially when it came to older sources of knowledge.

[7:33 PM]Varda: A lot was kept in the libraries of Gondor. Reason Gandalf went there

[7:34 PM]Sandalf13: They also had texts written in Adunaic, that was even more remote than Quenya by the time of the LoTR, but was also no doubt learned by scholars and loremasters...

[7:34 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: obviously the superior of the 2

[7:34 PM]Sandalf13: Too bad that the Rohirrim were not given to keeping written records...just songs and ballads. I hope that some smart Gondorian loremaster or balladeer would have written some of them down...

[7:38 PM]Varda: Just? : )

[7:39 PM]Varda: Good to have more than one way, aye.

[7:39 PM]Varda: When the library burns down, sing the song for the info.

[7:42 PM]Sandalf13: If one can remember it!

[8:18 PM]Sandalf13: Ar - are you still here?

[8:18 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I am. Doing my daily Rumble session before the report.

[8:18 PM]Sandalf13: Don't hurt yourself rumbling....

[8:19 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Will try not to ;D

[8:19 PM]Sandalf13: Last rumble I was in was while in a drunken stupor in Naples, Italy.

[8:19 PM]Sandalf13: Back in 1972, I believe.

[8:19 PM]Sandalf13: We won.

[8:20 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hah!

[8:20 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: But did you have fun?

[8:20 PM]Sandalf13: Ya surew ya betcha!

[8:21 PM]Sandalf13: For sure, you bet...in Washington State slang...

[8:21 PM]Sandalf13: Sailors are usually bad actors in the ports they visit...I wonder why.

[8:23 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Not enough time among other people?

[8:24 PM]Sandalf13: Probably...plus no drinking on U.S. Naval Ships....nor those of many other countries...only the U.K. and its commonwealth states allow drinking onboard...probably the Italians and the Spanish as well.

[8:25 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Drink up, me hearties, yo ho.

[8:28 PM]Sandalf13: One time when I was a young and dumb Ensign, I wanted to take a look at an old American Cruiser that had been given to the Spanish Navy. I walked over several piers, in uniform, of course, and was courteously received by the Watch on the Spanish ship. My presence must have stirred something, because the X.O. of the ship came out to meet me on the quarterdeck, and he was a FULL captain (O-6). He took me for a drink in the wardroom after the tour. I was tired, so when I walked off the ship, I was given full honors (for an Ensign...I guess they though it was special that I could speak Spanish). In any case, I was tired, so I hitched a ride going back to my pier on a garbage truck operated by the U.S. Navy at Rota. Now that must have been a sight: an Ensign rendered honors drives off in a garbage truck. So much for etiquette, nicht wahr?

[8:28 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: hehe

[8:28 PM]Sandalf13: Funny, at least!!

[@Varda

[Aye, it was like the ancient language - read it but not used for chatting. : )

[8:36 PM]Eönwë Valar: For certain values of "not used for chatting :}" YouTube - Latin dialogue from Tombstone

[8:41 PM]Sandalf13: Hah!!!

[8:41 PM]Varda: Namarie for now. : )

[8:41 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: namarie!

[8:41 PM]Eönwë Valar: Sleep well :}

[8:42 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie!!

[@Sandalf13

[8:42 PM]Eönwë Valar: Great story, hilarious image :} Definitely one I hope you shared with your kids.

[8:43 PM]Sandalf13: Yes...indeed.

[8:46 PM]Eönwë Valar: I didn't get the impression that, among the Numenoreans, it was a jealously-kept secret, more of a dwindling interest until only the loremasters and the high houses bothered. Among the Noldor, I suspect they were happy to teach it to anyone who was interested in learning, but not everyone they taught necessarily had the aptitude to be casually conversational.

[8:48 PM]Sandalf13: You are very probably right...

[@Ar-Pharazon-V

[obviously the superior of the 2

[8:48 PM]Eönwë Valar: lol

[8:49 PM]Eönwë Valar: Kinda like Dwarvish is said to be a very difficult language to learn (for non-Dwarves).

[8:49 PM]Sandalf13: If I am not mistaken, Tolkien modeled Dwarvish on Semitic tongues...

[8:49 PM]Eönwë Valar: Sounds familiar.

[8:50 PM]Sandalf13: A lot of back of the throat, guttural sounds.

[8:51 PM]Eönwë Valar: Now Dwarves did preserve their language rather jealously as I recall, to the point that (if memory serves) it'd changed little between the 7 houses even after a couple of ages and they could still communicate in that tongue when they gathered.

[8:51 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hmm, for the report, trying to find a game among this week's badges, but there's only 2 games that aren't either energybased or idle games and I've linked them both recently...

[8:52 PM]Sandalf13: achs, and oochs, and uchhss, not to mention khs...

[8:52 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Ah well, I'll link one of those two anyway

[8:52 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Personal gaming report:

[8:52 PM]Sandalf13: Yay!!

[8:53 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For (non)flashgaming, here's Kongregate - Play Beam Ball!

[8:54 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: You control a ball that's red, blue, or one of each linked together; deflect each incoming laser with the appropriate color while not getting hit by the wrong color.

[8:56 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Comes with many, many variations, all unlocked by getting more stars. Reach up to 3 stars per variation by getting long streaks of success!

[8:56 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Takes some practice, might be frustrating, but if you get any good at it, there's a lot to unlock

[8:57 PM]Sandalf13: Of course.

[8:59 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard gaming:

[9:01 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone: Level 112 on the reward track now, getting more gold. Not quite enough to buy a new skin yet after buying the mini-set last week, but we'll get back there

[9:02 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Continuing in the zerg questline, still having fun! Third quest will be spells, though, and there aren't that many zerg spells that count twice, so I'll probably just do a few matches with mage spell decks instead.

[9:02 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: But well on track for getting the Queen of Blades hero skin next week.

[9:03 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And got my death knight to level 54 on the way as well!

[9:04 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Brawl is Lunar Blessings, for the lunar new year. Choose a class, get a random deck, and then choose between several lunar new year animals to buff your deck.

[9:08 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Warcraft Rumble: Collection level 54 now. The gold reward for that doesn't seem that important anymore, since it's only 50 - though every bit helps - but it is a nice way to see my minis are getting more levels.

[9:10 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Swole Troll event ending soon, but that's okay, since I've gotten him to rare quality through a gold-costing deal, and pretty much cleaned everything out of the reward track except a rare core and some arc energy. So, the important stuff

[9:11 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Twas a good week for dungeon! I completed level 22 with Hogger, and then moved on to my second beast leader, Charlga, for the rest of the beast week. With her I got from 5 through 14.

[9:12 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And in the horde week I got my second horde leader Grom Hellscream through levels 21 and 22, so tomorrow I can start with the third leader, Sneed. Haven't really gotten an army composition for him yet, I'll take a look at what kind of stuff he's good with.

[9:13 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: In the heroic sigil campaign I cleared the Tar Tyrant with alliance after hitting level 23 with my alliance army. Will try for horde when that one reaches it. It's all small steps now, but that's fine.

[9:15 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For quality upgrades, I got the Swole Troll to rare as mentioned, as well as the leader Charlga and the alliance S.A.F.E. Pilot.

[9:15 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Got a second talent for the pilot, but nothing yet for the other 2. It'll come soon.

[9:16 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:

[9:17 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Interest in the current raid is a bit low, so we're officially on break until the next patch, but we do have some unofficial partly pugged efforts, and farmed the first bunch of bosses for that this week. Just for relaxation now, and possibly some finery buffs and vault slots. That's fine.

[9:18 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Weekly is timewalks, fourth week of the timewalking event. One more to complete the achievement and get the bee mount. Should be eazzzzy enough!

[9:21 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: With a few events going on and me just being a bit tired last week, didn't get around to Zek'vir attempts. Instead I've been visiting Elders for the Lunar Festival for coins to get the new mount - at about two thirds of the way now - and playing some Plunderstorm for the new rewards there, wherein I'm about halfway. And it seems that as we speak, the Love is in the Air event is starting with also some new rewards, so lots of stuff to do

[9:21 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Funny how all those holidays seem to be bunched together.

[9:21 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Or maybe there's just a lot of them throughout the year!

[9:22 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, and in Plunderstorm I got a few of those new rewards bought, including the Hooktalon parrot mount, and 2 fun weapon appearances: the Swabbie's Shovel and Swabbie's Oar.

[9:23 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And I think that's it for my report this week!

[9:32 PM]Sandalf13: Wow. I just finished reviewing it. THanks, and have a wonderful week!

[9:42 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: You too, namarie
