[4:08 PM]Varda: You're a skier - you know how to handle cold!
[4:08 PM]Sandalf13: I should hope so...
[4:08 PM]Varda: We wrapped the plants last night and brought in the pot plants. They seem to be doing well.
[4:08 PM]Sandalf13: It warmed up today to 10 Grad F. What a heat wave!
[4:08 PM]Varda: heh. Turn on the AC!
[4:09 PM]Sandalf13: I am thinking about it....he he....
[4:09 PM]Varda: While you're thinking, I'll toss this startled-looking gavel to Eonwe...

[4:18 PM]Varda: Lord of the Rings Online:
[4:18 PM]Varda: Universal Morale Potion through Jan 23 code: HEALUP
[4:18 PM]Varda: Our Angmar kin branch has a kin house at 2 Frothing Road, Kapheim, Thorin's Hall Homesteads. Since this is a 64-bit server, but a timed Legendary, no transfer is happening. Angmar is stable for now. Feel free to decorate!
[4:19 PM]Varda: Kinhouses are cleared on Landroval and Crickhollow, ready for the transfer.
[4:19 PM]Varda: LotRO players in kin this past week:
Landroval branch
Crickhollow branch:
Treebeard branch:
Angmar branch:
Mordor branch:
[4:19 PM]Sandalf13: Kapheim is the ancestral home of the Kaplan Klan.
[4:19 PM]Varda: It must be so!
[4:19 PM]Varda: Khan of the Kaplan Klan knows of this.
[4:20 PM]Varda: Any other gaming news? requests? questions?
[4:20 PM]Varda: Seen any other Valarites like Helm or Aragorn?
[4:21 PM]Varda: Guess we belabored all the questions with answers already. : )
[4:21 PM]Varda: On to
[4:21 PM]Varda: Tolkien!
[4:21 PM]Varda: Topic: Romance in Tolkien's works!
[4:22 PM]Varda: People say (who are they, anyway) that JRRT didn't have strong women, romance. Can we think of any romances? All books may be opened. : )
[4:23 PM]Sandalf13: LUTHIEN! She was certainly a bada... woman, capable of great love (for Beren) and a fighting spirit the equal of any man or Elf of the First Age!
[4:24 PM]Eönwë Valar: Ew, Romance. Cooties.
[4:24 PM]Varda: hehehe Eonwe
[4:24 PM]Sandalf13: How about Morwen doggedlyl waiting for the return of Hurin?
[4:24 PM]Varda: Totally agree, Sandalf, on Luthien and the ...
[4:25 PM]Varda: A regular Penelope, that Morwen. : )
[4:25 PM]Varda: Tom and Goldberry
[4:25 PM]Sandalf13: Yes she was.
[4:27 PM]Arien Valar: Celeborn and Galadriel , one of the more normal partnerships ... well she was a Noldo and he a Sindarin i think? but she comes across as the dominant element , and i would imagine Celeborn was the calming factor, more sensible and rational whereas she could be quite passionate I suspect
[4:27 PM]Varda: Celeborn was a war leader and Sindarin, aye, so he wa likely the strong, silent, handsome type.
[4:28 PM]Varda: Galadriel was more like the priestess of the tribe, intimidating, does a good bit of the speaking for both.
[4:28 PM]Sandalf13: Like all old couples, they got more and more like each other as time went on...and they were together for a LONG time even for the Elves.
[4:29 PM]Eönwë Valar: Depending on the version, he could've been Falmarin.
[4:30 PM]Arien Valar: Falmarin? What tribe is that?
[4:30 PM]Eönwë Valar: Calaquendi Teleri.
[4:30 PM]Eönwë Valar: The group that made it to Aman.
[4:30 PM]Arien Valar: ah , thank
[4:31 PM]Sandalf13: Celeborn's origin certainly is a puzzler, yes? Tolkien seemed to have some cconflicting ideas about that one...
[4:31 PM]Varda: The Sindarin were the singers, so he may have courted her with music, but it is not told.
[4:31 PM]Eönwë Valar: Some women like being sung to, heh.
[4:32 PM]Sandalf13: What about Glorfindel and Ecthelion of the Fountain? They were both Nolder and EXCELLENT singers, to boot.
[4:33 PM]Varda: We were talking romance. And there is some question that Glorfindel may have been Sindarin
[4:33 PM]Varda: But aye, Sindarin were certainly not the only singers. True.
[4:34 PM]Varda: Throw in Maglor for more proof of non-Sinda musicians. : )
[4:34 PM]Eönwë Valar: Galadriel was perhaps too proud to be courted by "mere" lords, heh. Celeborn had blood ties to the royal line. We're not so sure about Glorfindel or Ecthelion.
[4:36 PM]Varda: Musicians, songsters were a big deal, since music made Creation
[4:36 PM]Sandalf13: I forgot about Maglor...he was quite a singer, no doubt.
[4:36 PM]Varda: Arwen and Aragorn
[4:36 PM]Sandalf13: That one is TOO obvious, but very true, too.
[4:36 PM]Varda: like Luthien and Beren
[4:36 PM]Varda: Sam and Rosie
[4:36 PM]Sandalf13: Faramir and Eowyn.
[4:37 PM]Eönwë Valar: Tulkas and Nessa.
[4:37 PM]Sandalf13: Osse and Uinen.
[4:38 PM]Sandalf13: She brought him back to Ulmo from his brief flirtation with Melkor.
[4:39 PM]Eönwë Valar: Amroth and Nimrodel.
[4:40 PM]Sandalf13: Aldarion and Erendis, but in a very sad way...at least they started out with a romantic relationship...
[4:40 PM]Varda: Romances can be tragic, aye.
[4:41 PM]Sandalf13: Especially since Aladarion's heart was torn between Erendis and the Sea...sad to say, the sea won...
[4:41 PM]Eönwë Valar: That whole relationship turned colder than the arctic blast coming through the US. Not the marriage I'd be aspiring to.
[4:42 PM]Varda: Turin and Nienor, another tragic one.
[4:44 PM]Eönwë Valar: I think it was more than the Sea. Reading the Tale, it sounds very much like he was being prompted (either by the Valar or his own foresight as well as the knowledge of what's going on in Middle-Earth) to prepare for a fight against Sauron. In the end, he delivers missives to his father (the reigning king) from Gil-Galad thanking him for all he's done to aid the Elves of Lindon. (edited)
[4:46 PM]Eönwë Valar: He took the brunt of the ire from his wife, his father, and even his people to prepare a stand against Sauron.
[4:46 PM]Sandalf13: Since you brought that one up, Varda, I was going to mention another non-romantic, but very loving vignette that Tolkien interspersed throughout his writings, showing the "soft" side of men...Turin inherited the steely resolve of his Mother, Morwen, and seemed to always carry a sadness about him, but as a young boy, he would hang out in a tree or hide in some bushes in order to watch his younger sister Lalaith, because she brought a smile to his face and joy to his heart...such a sad tale. Too depressing.
[4:48 PM]Eönwë Valar: He was given moments of calm where he could've lived a peaceful life for at least a few years, but most of those Erendis was too proud to take advantage of.
[4:49 PM]Varda: She made her own mistakes, aye.
[4:53 PM]Sandalf13: I just had to go and get my copy of the U.T..: "Of Erendis it is said that when old age came upon her, and neglected by Ancalime and in bitter loneliness, she longed once more for Aldarion: and learning that he was gone from Numenor on what proved to be his last voyage but was soon expected to return, she left Emerie at last and journeyed unrecognized and unknown to the have of Romenna. There, it seems, she met her fate; but only the words 'Erendis perished in water in the year 985" remain to suggest how it came to pass."
[4:53 PM]Eönwë Valar:
[> to clarify above: Thanking Aldarion's father for all Aldarion's done. Gil-Galad gave the credit to the King of Numenor for all the aid provided, and it would seem Aldarion never corrected him or claimed the credit for himself, but did what needed to be done, and it wasn't until his father read the missives that he understood.
[4:54 PM]Sandalf13: I should keep all my LoTR texts ready at hand when we hold our weekly discussions!
[4:57 PM]Eönwë Valar: But anyway, I don't consider the tale of Aldarion and Erendis "romantic" because it's just plain tragic how those two could never get on the same page. They loved eachother, but that love turned to bitterness because he couldn't communicate and she couldn't understand and accept him despite knowing the kind of man she married.
[4:58 PM]Sandalf13: Perhaps best to think of it as a tragic romance.
[4:58 PM]Eönwë Valar: And not romantic tragedy? heh.
[5:00 PM]Eönwë Valar: And it left their daughter with little hope of a healthy relationship too.
[5:01 PM]Varda: So, on to other more romances? About to be out of time.
[5:01 PM]Sandalf13: Although Ancalime and Hallacar (who was also a descendant of Elros) did produce at least one healthy successor....(child)
[5:02 PM]Varda: Finrod knew he would be in trouble and didn't marry his love. He probably did that when they were both safely back in Valinor.
[5:03 PM]Varda: Nice when you can figure Valinor into your plans. : )
[5:03 PM]Eönwë Valar: Sure, let's do all the dangerous(/fun) stuff first, then we'll settle down and get married, heh.
[5:04 PM]Varda: Need an adventurous partner.
[5:05 PM]Eönwë Valar: That's why Celeborn chose Galadriel I'm sure :}
[5:05 PM]Varda: Did anyone have an adventurous partner? : )
[5:05 PM]Varda: heh, maybe so
[5:05 PM]Varda: Faramir and the killer of the Witch-king. : )
[5:06 PM]Arien Valar: Eowyn was not really what you d call a domestic housewife
[5:07 PM]Arien Valar: I wonder whether that changed much after their marriage.. Probably not that much i d expect
[5:08 PM]Sandalf13: Although they did have several children.
[5:09 PM]Sandalf13: What about Lothiriel and Eomer? Except here it was the man who had the adventures, and Lothiriel appears to be the traditional stay-at-home wife.
[5:09 PM]Eönwë Valar: Her personality? Probably not, although I'd hope after experiencing war for herself, her perspective on it might've shifted.
[5:09 PM]Sandalf13: Did not Eowyn say to Faramir that her heart had changed, and that she now preferred healing and things that grow, to the rigors of war?
[5:10 PM]Sandalf13: I would mark that as a change in personality.
[5:11 PM]Sandalf13: Going back to the original topic for today, that must have been one heck of a romantic scene when Eowyn told Faramier that her heart spoke to her at last, and she accepted his love...she waw Faramir as a man gentle of heart, but yet a man who could best any Rider of Roha in a fight...
[5:13 PM]Varda: gavel slides by on its side, headed towards the hammerpad which just wants to hear the chat
[5:14 PM]Sandalf13: "And she looked at him and saw the grave tenderness in his eyes, and yet knew, for she was bred among men of war, that here was one whom no Rider of the Mark would outmatch in battle."
[5:15 PM]Arien Valar: lies in a bush in the garden of the houses of healing, watches with dreamy eyes and sighs inaudibly to herself oh must love be nice
[5:16 PM]Varda: Nightingale complex time!
[5:16 PM]Arien Valar: )
[5:16 PM]Varda: gavel gently taps the side of the hammerpad
[5:16 PM]Varda: tap
[5:16 PM]Arien Valar:
Thus ends this week's meeting. Come back and see us next week!
[5:17 PM]Varda: After-meeting!
[5:17 PM]Varda: Romance chat may feel free to continue if you have time. Free chat!
[5:17 PM]Varda: chat flies up in multiple shiny butterflies
[5:18 PM]Arien Valar: time yes .. but this old body .. clutches stick and crutch yawningly
[5:19 PM]Eönwë Valar: Melkor, what a hopeless romantic he was. He took Ungoliant out on a date to see the Two Trees, paid for an extravagant meal, then gave her an entire treasury's worth of jewelry. But of course, that wasn't enough for Ungoliant.
[5:20 PM]Arien Valar: Sauron was not much better i daresay .. well at least he was after one of his own kind ....
[5:20 PM]Varda: Gandalf and his stick. Sara Oakheart and her stick.... eyes you carefully
[5:21 PM]Arien Valar: i love my stick , ha clutches lovoingly
[5:21 PM]Sandalf13: Do you think that Melkor was too enaored ot Ungoliant to have any dinner himself, then, Eonwe?
[5:21 PM]Varda: : )
[5:22 PM]Eönwë Valar: Yeah, poor Sauron. He housed, fed, and decorated for Shelob, and she wouldn't give him the time of day. Poor Sauron and Morgoth were taken advantage of.
[5:22 PM]Varda: Villain origin stories!
[5:22 PM]Sandalf13: Like master like servant, I suppose...
[5:22 PM]Varda: Role-model? : )
[@Sandalf13
[Do you think that Melkor was too enaored ot Ungoliant to have any dinner himself, then, Eonwe?
[5:22 PM]Eönwë Valar: Melkor wanted some food, but Ungoliant ate off his plate!
[5:23 PM]Sandalf13: Ugh. Not a great dining partner, then...
[5:23 PM]Eönwë Valar: I mean, come on. He bought her a nice meal, and all he wanted was some fries. She of course wanted his fries too.
[5:24 PM]Sandalf13: I did not think that such a posh restaurant as "Ville Valar" would serve fries...heh heh.
[5:25 PM]Sandalf13: And the waiters/waitresses all wore tuxes, no doubt.
[5:25 PM]Eönwë Valar: He even asked her. "Are you sure you're full? Because I know how you get, and you're gonna be telling me you're hungry later." and she said "What do you mean by that! I think I know whether I'm full or not." Then he stops by McDonalds to get a cheeseburger, and she's like "Can I have a nibble off your cheeseburger?"
[5:25 PM]Arien Valar: I love you guys and gals , but honestly i have to go before i fall asleep laughing
[5:25 PM]Eönwë Valar: Sleep well Arien :}
[5:26 PM]Sandalf13: Have a good sleep, Arien, and Namarie!
[5:26 PM]Varda: It's After-meeting, just so folks can do what needs done. : )
[5:26 PM]Varda: An hour is plenty
[5:26 PM]Varda: Get well!
[5:26 PM]Arien Valar: Namarie
[5:26 PM]Eönwë Valar: Man can't even get a cheeseburger in peace. "Oh we'll split it." Then she eats the whole thing. Never fails.
[5:27 PM]Varda: I've seen Shelob in LotRO. Her nibble of anything would be enormous.
[5:29 PM]Sandalf13: Two good fanart pix of Thingol not being the Thingol of Beren and Luthien time, but the later Thingol...setting Turin on his lap to the astonisthment of the Elves, as he had never so highly regarded men before.
[5:29 PM]Eönwë Valar: I bet the whole "Dark Lord" nonsense would've gone away if Ungoliant had just been happy with what our man Melkor bought her. I mean, the guy was already reeling from the utter destruction Varda unleashed on him turning him down. She didn't just go "Aw, how sweet, but I'm already seeing someone." She straight up laughed in his face like "Now I know you ain't hittin' on me!"
[5:29 PM]Varda: Do you have the direct url to that?
[5:30 PM]Sandalf13: I can find it.
[5:30 PM]Varda: Dark Lord and Lady of Light? Not compatible.

[5:32 PM]Varda: URL revisted.
[5:33 PM]Varda: That was the whole search thing, tad long, but helped get there. Thanks.
[5:38 PM]Eönwë Valar: Ok, enough humor from me for now. Time for me to be off.
[5:38 PM]Eönwë Valar: Take care all, good night, sleep well, and have fun :}
[5:38 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie, Eonwe...
[5:48 PM]Varda: Namarie!
[5:49 PM]Sandalf13: Me too...time to scavenge up something for dinner...the clouds are suddenly rolling in, supposed to get more snow tonight and tomorrow....we shall see. Maybe it will warm up a tad?
[5:49 PM]Sandalf13: I suppose Ar will do his report later...
[7:09 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya! Sorry, things got in the way.
[7:10 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And I'll add that according to Bored of the Rings, Shelob ended up marrying the balrog
[8:02 PM]Sandalf13: Which Balrog?
[8:02 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The one who survived this version of Moria!
[8:02 PM]Sandalf13: Ich bin hier! Und ich warte an deinem Bericht!!!
[8:02 PM]Sandalf13: Duh...of course, slapping my forehead.
[8:03 PM]Sandalf13: Temperature is dropping like a rock right now. Supposed to go down to -10 Grad F tonight. I am glad I am at home and more or less snuggled in for the night.
[8:03 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hmm, sounds frosty!
[8:04 PM]Sandalf13: I read Bored of the Rings while still in college. Back in the good old days of Harvard....long before the current dismal state of that school.
[8:06 PM]Sandalf13: Facebook
[8:20 PM]Sandalf13: Big Boy
[8:21 PM]Sandalf13: I took the video above when the UP 4014 (Big Boy) passed through Central City, NE.
[8:21 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Train fan?
[8:23 PM]Sandalf13: YouTube -Sanford Kaplan - Up 4014 Big Boy Pulling Out of Central City, NE, 4 Aug 2019
[8:24 PM]Sandalf13: I took this one also, as it returned to Wyoming at the end of its trip.
[8:46 PM]Sandalf13: Yes I am indeed!!
[9:16 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Personal gaming report;
[9:17 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For (non)flashgaming, here's another bontegame! Sequel to a whole series of games on the website and teaser to a paid 200-level game, here's Kongregate - Factory Balls forever
[9:18 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: 25 levels of ball-painting goodness where you have to use various tools to give the ball the same pattern as the example on the box.
[9:18 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Nice music, relaxed gameplay, and if you mess up, just try again
[9:27 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard gaming:
[9:29 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Diablo 4: Logged in just a moment to get the cross-promotion rewards for having both the new WoW expansion and the D4 expansion. In Diablo 4, that gave some Invincible-themed cosmetics for your horse mounts, including the Helm of Domination hanging from the saddle. Looks nice
[9:29 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Didn't see anything in WoW from that, maybe I already had all the stuff already from previous crossover events.
[9:31 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone: Level 96 on the reward track! Almost to level 100 once again. More portraits yay!
[9:31 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Also got the death knight to level 53 along the way.
[9:31 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And almost enough gold to buy a new skin as well!
[9:32 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Tavern brawl is The Great Amalgamation. Build a deck, every minion counts as all different types at once. That means you can have all types of synergies!
[9:33 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I myself mostly focused on undead, mecha and murlocs, but there's plenty more options.
[9:34 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Warcraft Rumble: No new collection level this week, but not far off.
[9:35 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Druid of the Claw event is still going, along with a blingtron event on the side, which is good for gold and a few minis' stars.
[9:36 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: In the Druid of the Claw event, though, I've definitely now cleaned out the important stuff from the reward track: gold, druid stars, all the other stars and tomes... all that's left is some cores and arc energy. I should have enough tickets by the end to get the epic core, but it's no priority.
[9:37 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: It helped that I did get the best druid talent from the grid along the way, allowing me to complete another series of challenges for this one.
[9:39 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: In the dungeon, I got my third cenarion hero, Ysera, to level 17, so that's good progress. In the alliance week I had no luck with Jaina, though. It doesn't help that this particular dungeon is annoying
[9:40 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And in the heroic sigil campaign, I defeated Jaina Proudmoore with all remaining families, and got the flying dragon-boss Emberstrife with all families as well!
[9:40 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: That last one was tough, I often had to switch up the deck for more ranged minis to get through.
[9:41 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: That completes the Dustwallow zone at 135 sigils, Un'goro Crater will be next!
[9:42 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The fights are about to catch up to my own mini's levels, though, so I'm not quite sure how I'll go about them. It'll definitely be harder.
[9:43 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Maybe I should leave them for a little bit, or grab some very specific teams from the internet so I can make it work at lower levels.
[9:43 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: We'll see. I'm still leveling things, so it won't last long!
[9:45 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And finally quality upgrades! 4 minis to rare this week: The leaders Murk-Eye and Cairne, as well as the raptors and the skeleton party.
[9:46 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Also got talents for Thaurissan, the Druid of the Wild - as mentioned above - and the four minis upgraded this week, so talents are caught up again. I don't really use all of the above, but for those I do, getting 2 extra levels does help
[9:47 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:
[9:48 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Raiding a bit, after slaying the final boss last time we took things easy by going through all the earlier ones. That got me enough finery threads to upgrade the in-raid buff 2 times. Very useful! Also got full heroic gear along the way, by finally getting my final feral trinket, as well as a new cloak for both specs with a special effect.
[9:49 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: With that and a few more ilevels for the special ring, I hit 625 ilevel, making it a bit easier to work onward on the tier 11 delves.
[9:50 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: But I've also been working on the weeklies, including the second timewalk week for the event, the battlegrounds, and the pet battles. Busy time
[9:50 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I've got one more battleground and timewalk to do, but tuesday will do fine for that.
[9:51 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And during the battlegrounds, I also got to honor level 135!
[9:51 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Funny, same as the amount of sigils I have in Rumble...
[9:53 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And finally, the delves: completed the Skittering Breach, Underkeep, Spiral Weave and the Dread Pit. Only the Sinkhole remains, but it hasn't been Bountiful for a while, and I do want the Brann experience from it, so I'm just waiting for it. He's level 51 too now.
[9:53 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Almost done with the tier 11 delves... Sinkhole is probably one of the most annoying though. We'll see how difficult it gets!
[9:54 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's my report for the week
[9:54 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
January 20, 2025
[1:11 PM]Sandalf13: Another 5 inches of snow overnight...it was COLD shovelling my walk and my neighbor's walk this morning! It warmed up to +3 Grad F by 1200!
[7:23 PM]Eönwë Valar: Tried the plywood trick, or too many cracks/snow too thick for that?
[7:24 PM]Eönwë Valar: Hmm, would probably catch on the spaces between the blocks.
