Gaming!

[4:10 PM]
Pallando, go ahead. : )

Pallando-Valar — Yesterday at 4:12 PM
In Eve, the CSM summit has just finished. This year they're doing something different with the minutes:
We plan to release the meeting notes from the Summit topics as soon as possible post-Summit. Historically, compiling and redacting sensitive information has taken several weeks. This year, we are contemplating releasing more detailed CSM Summit notes towards the end of the term. This approach, requested by both players and the CSM, aims to enhance transparency. We will keep you updated on the potential release format and timeline.
So we'll see what that means in terms of getting info out of it.
[4:13 PM]
Most everything else remains quiet. After our hard fought victory against the Insurgency last week, a new one appeared... next door. This time we didn't push hard for a win and have just fought a delaying defensive action waiting for it to finish.
Think that's it for now. Hopefully in the next few weeks we get some news out of the summit and we get details about the upcoming Havoc update.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:14 PM
Will they let slip the dogs of war?

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:15 PM

Tolkien!

[4:27 PM]
Topic:
[4:28 PM]
Heroes are often associated with rescuing others. What rescues or rescue attempts can we think of in Tolkien's works?
Have at it. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
Bilbo saving the dwarves from spiders in Mirkwood, and then again from Thranduil's prison.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:29 PM
Aiya All! Sorry I am late. Snow sort of held me up today.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:29 PM
Aiya!

Varda — Yesterday at 4:29 PM
Welcome back, Snowman. : )
Check out Eonwe's new story when you have a chance!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:29 PM
Bilbo saving the Dwarves from the SPiders.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:30 PM
Funny how that's the first thing we both came up with

Varda — Yesterday at 4:30 PM
: )

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:30 PM
Sorry...I failed to see Ar
Ar's post

Varda — Yesterday at 4:32 PM
Go ahead and mention other rescues, folks. The books are full of them. : )

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:32 PM
Fingon saving Maedhros from the cliff upon which he was hung by that nasty guy Morgoth.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:33 PM
That was rough.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:33 PM
Aragorn saving the Hobbits at the camp at Amon Sul.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:33 PM
Gandalf saved Bilbo from a boring Hobbit life. (edited)

Varda — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
hehee

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
Pippin helped save Faramir from the pyre.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
Pippin also saved Beregond from the claw of the troll chieftain clutching at Beregond's throat.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
Merry saved Eowyn from the L- I mean Witch King.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
As far as that goes, one could argue that Merry saved Eowyn from the Lord of the Nazgul.
Ar and I must be on the same wavelength today.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
hehe

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:36 PM
Frodo saved Sam from the clutches of Gollum.
Sam saved Frodo from the Orcs in the Tower.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:37 PM
Gollum saved the Ring from the clutches of Sauron?
More seriously (maybe): Gollum saved Middle-Earth from the clutches of Sauron?
[4:38 PM]
Gollum saved Frodo from casting himself into the volcano.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:38 PM
Gollum saved Frodo from throwing Gollum into the volcano.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:39 PM
Very true...I like to think that at the uttermost end, Gollum took some responsibility for destroying the Ring...and he did so consciously

Varda — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
In a way, Frodo did send Gollum into the volcano due to the oaths sworn earlier.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
True!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
I believe that any rational being is capable of redemption, and such should not be denied to them.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
Gollum had his chance, and he rejected it.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:41 PM
I guess I should say Gollum sent himself in by reneging on the oath.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:41 PM
Yesss, but when does a being stop being rational?

Varda — Yesterday at 4:41 PM
Addiction is not rational, aye.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:41 PM
Just like Saruman had his chance, Sauron had his chance, Melkor had his chance...

Varda — Yesterday at 4:41 PM
Very few took chances given. Osse was a rare exception.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:42 PM
That was Feonors oath finallly coming to rest
?

Varda — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
Back to topic: Finrod rescued Beren from being eaten in Sauron's dungeon at the cost of his own life.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
When offered the choice, all four of the major protagonists ranged against Sauron (Elrond, Gandalf, Galadriel, Aragorn) rejected the choice of evil and stayed true to the Valar.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
Aye. Heroic restraint.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:44 PM
rigjr all you loevely Valarites .. but i have to

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:44 PM
So they rescued themselves?
Aw, namarie Arien!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:44 PM
Namarie, Arien!

Varda — Yesterday at 4:44 PM
Namarie, Arien!

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:45 PM
Namarie !

Varda — Yesterday at 4:45 PM
You got to be here for most everything. Nighty night!

@Varda
Very few took chances given. Osse was a rare exception.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:45 PM
OK, it's almost Valentine's Day, so I'll make the connection: Ossë had Uinen. She wasn't going down that road. Probably realized if he didn't want to lose her he better take a step back from the edge. He was no Anakin Skywalker.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:45 PM
As to Ar's comment, yes, they saved themselves from a terrible fate, but also in the process saved Middle-earth. Which came first The Chicken, or the egg?

Varda — Yesterday at 4:45 PM
Good connection, Eonwe
[4:46 PM]
If they had not made the needed decision, others may have had to take them down. It would not have been pretty.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
Cross cultural -  like that.
[4:47 PM]
I suppose that Eonwe believes in the idea that every good man needs a good woman, huh?
Or vice-0versa.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:48 PM
Just helped Osse's mental fight to return
He had a motive.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:48 PM
Better a good one than a bad one.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:48 PM
Very true.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Needs? Perhaps not, but if you're at a point where you waver, having someone you love there to give you strength can make a difference.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Agreed.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
Could be your lady, or nephew even. : )

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
There are many things we don't "need" that do us much good, and many that do us much harm.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
hehe

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:51 PM
"Many that live deserve death, and many that die deserve life" and "Go not to the Elves for counsel, for they will tell you both no and yes" and "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards" etc.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:53 PM
Eonwe...you must finish your first quote! "Then be not too hastyt to deal out death in judgment, for not even the very wise can see all ends." Now that is a powerful statement.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:53 PM
Aye

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:54 PM
"Many that live deserve death, and some who die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then be not hasty to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:54 PM
Sorry...I quoted from memory, but that is the exact full quote, right there. Excellent!

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:55 PM
That's from memory too, actually, but if my memory is as good as I expect it to be, it's correct.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:56 PM
Now I have to look it up! HAng on....

Varda — Yesterday at 4:56 PM
Fire it off when you find it. Meanwhile here's another:
[4:56 PM]
The Three Hunters Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas attempted to rescue Merry and Pippin after their abduction by orcs.
[4:57 PM]
That they were beaten to the rescue does not lessen their attempt.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:59 PM
If attempts are good enough, was not Boromir pierced by many trying to save them?

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:59 PM
The actual quote:
"Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends. "

--- Chapter 2: "The Shadow of the Past", Fellowship of the Ring, Book 1.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:59 PM
0'Then be not too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends." p. 93, 1974 Ballantune Books edition.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:02 PM
Another, with the cost being high! :  Finrod rescued Beren from being eaten in Sauron's dungeon at the cost of his own life.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:02 PM
"My heart is burst, my limbs are cold..." Ugh.
[5:03 PM]
Finrod is my choice of the best Elf ever...

Varda — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Agreed. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Definitely a good one!

Varda — Yesterday at 5:04 PM
Has to be right up near the top if not the top of most lists of best of the elves.
And we have reached the hour.
gavel bows to hammerpad

After-meeting!

Sure, fire away.
[5:05 PM]
What is it? (See, I trust you and said yes first. hehe)

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:05 PM
Is that like an after-dinner mint?

Varda — Yesterday at 5:06 PM
passes around after-dinner mints Let's find out!
If the pic is good, then yes. : )

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:06 PM
Sounds like the pressure's on now, lol.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
That is for you to decided! 7 inches of snow Saturday morning, more Saturday afternoon...had to shovel Satuiday morning and afternoon. Today the sun is out, and look what we have here!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Oooops...I have got to go. Guests for dinner again, tonight. Ah, the travails of an active social life...but I shall miss your company, and will check in for Ar's report later. Namarie!!!!!!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Namarie!

Varda — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Namarie. Enjoy! : )
It is after 5. No worries!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Salmon is on the menu again, boys (and girls).

Varda — Yesterday at 5:15 PM
yum!

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:16 PM
Good menu.
[5:17 PM]
Before I turn my attention to the real world, here's one more rescue for you, for Valentine's Day: Beren sprang in front of an arrow to save Luthien, and got hit in the chest for it. Not quite an arrow through a heart, thankfully.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:18 PM
or knee. : )

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:18 PM
heh

Varda — Yesterday at 5:18 PM
Those two had a rough time.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:19 PM
Indeed.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:20 PM
But they got together more than once and in the end. : )
Son Dior

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:20 PM
Yep, can do worse than that.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:20 PM
I'm sure they spent the whole time saving eachother from something or other. She breaks him out of Sauron's dungeons, he throttles her would-be kidnappers....

Varda — Yesterday at 5:20 PM
But what have you done for me today? ; )

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:20 PM
And there's cold water on the romance right there, lol.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:21 PM
It would be an ongoing fun joke, not really cold water.
Long as that is understood at least.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:21 PM
Aye.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:23 PM
Make them both laugh

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:24 PM
Anyway, I must be off. Enjoy the story, and for those of you who celebrate it, Happy Valentine's Day.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:24 PM

Varda — Yesterday at 5:24 PM

[5:27 PM]
Yeah, some humor just falls flat as a cake with the oven door open.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:36 PM
Too much baggage can be attached.
[5:36 PM]
Ok, think I'll meander on to other things whilst keeping a Norn's eye over here too.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:40 PM
Is that a Norn as in Memory, Sorrow and Thorn?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:41 PM

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:44 PM
For (non)flashgaming, I don't think I've linked this before, but previous time I played I only got to do a few battles; this time around I also unlocked the base and started upgrading stuff for this week's badge.

https://www.kongregate.com/games/amtgames/heroes-of-war is a military strategy game where you collect decks of cards made up of "heroes" of WW2, soldiers and tanks and artillery. You then use these cards to play battles throughout campaigns in Europe, by facing your units against enemy units along lanes in a strategic manner.

[9:49 PM]
I've only scratched the surface, but there's many resources available through quests and through production in your base, so you can collect new cards and equipment, and rank them up, level them, and otherwise increase your power and unit choices.
[9:50 PM]
Could be worth really getting into

Blizzard gaming:

Hearthstone:
Level 116 on the reward track. Usually when I'm around this point, the new expansion is not far away, but I've not seen any announcements yet. In any case, more levels means more gold, and I'm nearing the 2k gold required for the new mini-set.
[9:56 PM]
I've completed the Lunar New Year event quest, getting 3 new rewards, a battleground hero skin, a signature version of Howdyfin, and the Dragon Dance Celeste skin for mage. Very festive!
[9:57 PM]
Brawl is Clockwork Card Dealer, where you make a deck, and each turn you are guaranteed to draw a card of the exact mana cost you can afford that turn; as in, the turn number.
[9:58 PM]
I did my games with a warlock deck with a few key cards for each step along the way up to 10, as well as a bunch of high level demons and legendaries to spam at the max cost.
[9:59 PM]
Rumble: No new collection level, about halfway to the next.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 10:00 PM
Got to leave early tonight, Ar. I will finish up your report tomorrow. Namarie!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 10:00 PM
Made a bit more progress in the sigil campaign, completing the last 2 fights in Un'goro Crater.

next up: Winterspring!
[10:03 PM]
It's alliance week in the dungeon, and my deck for alliance is pretty ok. Got level 14 done with Tirion.
[10:05 PM]
I upgraded the Molten Giant and the spell Arcane Blast to uncommon, and got the right talent for the Giant. Keeping an eye out for the spell's talent
[10:06 PM]

WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 10:07 PM
In raiding, we got another Fyrakk kill, getting more people their achievement. We took the shortcut this time, leaving us a few side wings to grind through on tuesday.
[10:09 PM]
Weekly quest gives us 2: Pet battles, and battlegrounds. Completed the former, 1 more to go for the latter. Got a few more pvp gear recipes from that, and made it to honor level 123.
[10:10 PM]
Love is in the Air is going! To buy all the new rewards requires 800 tokens in total, and I've been doing the apothecary fight every day with 5 characters for those.
[10:11 PM]
Those give a bit of experience as well, getting both my paladin and rogue to level 61.
[10:12 PM]
And, as shown in the screenshots channel, I also finally got the rare mount that drops from them, the X-45 Heartbreaker, formerly known as the Love Rocket before Blizzard got rid of some of the innuendo in the game
[10:13 PM]
A pink rocket, for which my pink gnome warlock/engineer is grateful!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 10:16 PM
Also, while I was buying some gametime, I also bought 2 packs for temporary sale on the blizzard shop. The Lunar Pack for the Lunar Festival, of which I was still missing 2 mounts, so now I have Hogrus the pig, and Squeakers the rat.
[10:17 PM]
And based on the dark version of the Love is in the Air sets, I also bought the Twilight Pack, getting a Sky Prowler fox mount and the Twilight Witch transmog set.
[10:18 PM]
Some pieces I think I'll want to use on my void elf
With the whole event stuff going on, no time for alt-questing, but they're seeing action anyway
[10:19 PM]
And that's my report for the week!
Namarie

Eonwë Valar — Today at 1:18 AM
Just to add to what I was saying earlier about Ossë (because quoting Tolkien is fun):
[1:19 AM]
"Melkor hated the Sea, for he culd not subdue it. It is said that in the making of Arda he endeavoured to draw Ossë to his allegiance, promising to him all the realm and power of Ulmo, if he would serve him. (edited)
[1:20 AM]
So it was that long ago there arose great tumults in the sea that wrought ruin to the lands. But Uinen, at the prayer of Aulë, restrained Ossë and brought him before Ulmo; and he was pardoned and returned to his allegiance, to which he has remained faithful." --- "The Valaquenta"
[1:23 AM]
"Restrained" here doesn't necessarily mean Uinen tied him up in her hair and dragged him to Ulmo's throne. It wouldn't be very useful to trust a guy who had to be treated so. More than likely she said to him, "Hey, you realize what's going on? You realize what you're about to do?" and helped him realize Melkor was using him and would never live up to his promises. (edited)

Varda — Today at 1:26 AM
Sounds likely. Also, there had to be a reason to pardon him, as in willingness to return, repentance.
[1:27 AM]
Since he did remain faithful, that is probable, even though not stated in detail.
[1:27 AM]
And thank you, Eonwe. : )

Eonwë Valar — Today at 1:28 AM

[1:31 AM]
I'd also add what Olwë told Fëanor when the latter approached the former about joining the Noldor's rebellion: "It may be the part of a friend to rebuke a friend's folly."
[1:34 AM]
Fëanor had (seemingly) pushed his wife away, hated his brothers, his sons couldn't temper him, and his father and mother were dead. Olwë certainly didn't stand a chance. No one was getting through to him.
