5:00pm Eastern Time
Discord: Valar Guild/meeting_place
Attending (6): Arien, Ar-Pharazon, Eonwe (presiding), Fangorn, Pallando, Varda
Topic 1 by Eonwe: Some ancient cultures washed guests' feet as a gesture of hospitality. You think Hobbits considered this, or did they "nope" that one before it ever got started?
Topic 2 by Eonwe: If an Elf took off his/her shoes in the rain, would he/she be likely to enjoy the squish of the mud in between his/her toes, or would he/she simply walk atop it like solid ground?
Non-flashgaming including "Doodle Alive".
[9:44 PM]Varda: We have new missions in LotRO, and the missions lately have been called Delvings. Verry suspicious. : )
[November 13, 2024
[3:56 PM]Eönwë Valar: World of Warcraft: Anniversary direct stream.
[3:56 PM]Eönwë Valar: WoW is finally getting Housing.
[3:57 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: phases back to build house on Teldrassil
[3:58 PM]Eönwë Valar: Wonder where the options for homes will be. Not likely to have free reign over the world, but would probably pick Hearthglen for my Paladin, it being on the borders of the Plaguelands
[4:00 PM]Eönwë Valar: Maybe somewhere in Pandaria if I wanted a relaxing spot.
[4:03 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Calaron's childhood home was on the outskirts of Astranaar. Might clear out a few horde or furbolg...
[9:06 PM]Eönwë Valar: Hope you're ready for it: YouTube - Celtic Woman - Winter Wonderland
[November 14, 2024
[2:25 PM]Eönwë Valar: Hmm, reading the WoW retail roadmap, I'm bothered that there doesn't seem to be any new Delves after 11.1.
[5:35 PM]Eönwë Valar: Thought this was interesting: YouTube - Tolkien DOES Have Canon and it Should be Respected
[November 16, 2024
[6:36 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's Tier 11 Delve done myself, at 616 ilevel, tanking with Brann healing. Slow as heck, and not a lot of undercoin profit. I think I'll just stick to doing multiple T8s as dps
[6:39 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Can always come back for the full T11 achievements when I'm at least 623.
[November 17, 2024
[3:10 AM]Eönwë Valar: Out of curiosity, what level do you have Brann to?
[2:00 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: 45, he hit 46 on that one.
[4:02 PM]Eönwë Valar: Heya.
[4:02 PM]Varda: Aiya!
[4:02 PM]Sandalf13: Aiya!!!
[4:02 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya!
[4:02 PM]Varda: Arien, Fangorn and I are distracted killing things in a LotRO instance
[4:02 PM]Varda: Eonwe has the gavel so you can be properly given attention!
[@Ar-Pharazon-V
[45, he hit 46 on that one.
[4:04 PM]Eönwë Valar: I tried T11 lsat night at 614 ilvl, Brann at 46. Didn't go well and wasn't going to go well. Probably didn't help I picked a horrible Delve to go over my head on (limited space for fighing, no walls to try and LoS them to get closer).
[4:05 PM]Eönwë Valar: @Bounder Meeting is beginning. Come join the fun!
[4:05 PM]Eönwë Valar: Elen Sila Lumenn Omentielvo!
[4:05 PM]Eönwë Valar: Membership:

[4:06 PM]Eönwë Valar: You heard what Arien, Fangorn, and Varda are up to :}
[4:06 PM]Eönwë Valar: Heya :}
[4:07 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya!
[4:07 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I went into Mycomancer for mine, happened to be the one that has you killing the boss first. After that was done I was feeling pretty confident about the rest
[4:07 PM]Sandalf13: Aiya'
[4:07 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: (continue!)
[4:08 PM]Eönwë Valar: So I count: Varda, Arien, Fangorn, Eonwë, Phar, Sandalf, Pallando. Anyone not in that list say Aiya to get counted for the Attendance :}

[4:16 PM]Eönwë Valar: Split Leaders for Warcraft Rumble, Mists of Pandaria Classic, and the roadmap for both WoW retail and WoW Classic.
[4:17 PM]Eönwë Valar: After 20 years, housing is coming to WoW (or I guess 21 since it's supposed to be with the release of the Midnight Expansion).
[4:18 PM]Eönwë Valar: They're saying "expansion reveal" of Midnight between Summer and Autumn, so we'll see what that means for actual launch.
[4:19 PM]Eönwë Valar: Other WoW news:

[4:30 PM]Eönwë Valar: Lord of the Rings Online: Update 42.1 is live.
[4:31 PM]Arien Valar: aiya folks sorry for keeping Varda away .. she and Fangorn have been helping me a lot
[4:31 PM]Eönwë Valar: Since Varda, Fangorn, and Arien are here now, I assume those burarum were properly crushed.
[4:31 PM]Arien Valar: spiders , maggots and bugs and the odd buarum #
[4:32 PM]Arien Valar: and they were we had a willing victim in Fangorn with his Enting but .. Varda saved us all
[4:32 PM]Eönwë Valar: Hehe.
[4:33 PM]Sandalf13: Yay Varda!
[4:33 PM]Eönwë Valar: I've reached the end of my gaming news. Anything else before we move on to Tolkien?
[4:36 PM]Varda: I'll have to give LotRO news later
[4:36 PM]Eönwë Valar: OK.
[4:36 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, I'll add that for Hearthstone, they reversed the changes to weekly quests they made some time ago.
[4:37 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Bit annoying, since you need to win games again for them rather than just play them, but I guess they had their reasons!
[4:39 PM]Eönwë Valar: Ok, on to...
[4:40 PM]Eönwë Valar: Tolkien:
[4:42 PM]Eönwë Valar: Some ancient cultures washed guests' feet as a gesture of hospitality. You think Hobbits considered this, or did they "nope" that one before it ever got started?
[4:42 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Comb them, maybe!
[4:43 PM]Sandalf13: With a brush...might be better than a comb!
[4:43 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Larger feet, but easier to reach. They might consider it.
[4:44 PM]Treebeard: Are Hobbits' feet any closer to the ground than anyone else's?
[4:45 PM]Sandalf13: Given that Hobbits do not wear shoes or boots, I suspect that they had no problems with Athletes' Foot, as many of us show-wearing gym-rats do.
[4:45 PM]Sandalf13: shoe-wearing
[4:45 PM]Varda: It's possible that they might have found foot-washing a very nice thing to do.
[4:45 PM]Eönwë Valar: Considering the practice was done when people wore sandals, and every other group in the lands we're looking at in Middle-Earth (Men, Dwarves, Elves) wears shoes or boots, Hobbits are likliest to practice this, given they go barefoot; but Tolkien never mentions it as a practice of hospitality.
[4:45 PM]Varda: Doubt it would be something JRRT would think of
[4:46 PM]Eönwë Valar: Bilbo certainly doesn't offer to wash the Dwarves' feet.
[4:46 PM]Sandalf13: Foot washing is not too common a practice in Merry Old England.
[@Treebeard
[Are Hobbits' feet any closer to the ground than anyone else's?
[4:46 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Depends on how high they jump
[4:46 PM]Sandalf13: Ha ha.
[4:47 PM]Treebeard: Ha ha. Fast measurers
[4:48 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: What exactly is the thought behind washing guests' feet?
[4:48 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: To compensate them for the travel?
[4:48 PM]Eönwë Valar: Feet are dirty from walking, house is clean from cleaning.
[4:48 PM]Sandalf13: I believe it has to do with humility, and ensuring the guests feel welcome and comfortable.
[4:49 PM]Eönwë Valar: As mentioned, it's an extension of hospitality, welcoming someone into your home.
[4:50 PM]Varda: When people had sandaled feet and walked for miles, it was a great kindness.
[4:50 PM]Eönwë Valar: Not so big once shoes and boots are worn, but with sandals as the standard raiment for feet, getting those feet clean before they make a mess on the carpet is a big deal.
[4:50 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So indeed, compensation of sorts for the journey they had to make to get here?
[@Varda
[When people had sandaled feet and walked for miles, it was a great kindness.
[4:50 PM]Eönwë Valar: And let's be honest, who wouldn't appreciate a foot massage after walking all day?
[4:50 PM]Varda: : )
[4:51 PM]Treebeard: ... a hobbit, I suppose... ticklish?
[4:51 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Not me. It seems weird to have someone rub my feet.
[4:51 PM]Treebeard: haha
[4:51 PM]Varda: It is not something people need so much these days.
[4:52 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's not just a custom thing either. The idea of someone touching your feet... I don't know.
[4:52 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I hope people were allowed to decline
[4:53 PM]Sandalf13: The VA gives me a monthly massage, and I do enjoy having the therapist massage my feet...what a wonderful feeling (once I get over the ticklish part). Of course, I take a good shower before I head over there...
[4:53 PM]Eönwë Valar: I would say it's risky because you're refusing hospitality at that point.
[4:54 PM]Eönwë Valar: We're talking about ancient cultures that took things like sacred hospitality seriously.
[4:55 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Having to accept a form of hospitality that doesn't make you feel comfortable or even welcome seems to defeat the point. But I guess you gotta put up with it for social standing.
[4:55 PM]Eönwë Valar: Today we don't care because we'll get a hotel down the next street, but when that one house or tent might be all you see for months, it's a much bigger deal.
[4:55 PM]Varda: People walking barefoot over all sorts of terrain would probably find it a very considerate action.
[4:56 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There must have been people who'd prefer the ache of walking over the discomfort of having someone rub your feet. I guess they kept their opinions to themselves.
[4:57 PM]Treebeard: It sounds like a touchy subject. Tolkien had other more important things to write about.
[4:57 PM]Sandalf13: I have often wondered if there are masseuses who specialize in foot massage....maybe in an Oriental neighborhood?
[4:57 PM]Sandalf13: Yes...having ones feet massaged can be very touchy, he he.
[4:57 PM]Eönwë Valar: There may have been ways to carefully and politely refuse certain things, but if you were going to refuse the hospitality offered, why are you even at that door?
[4:57 PM]Varda: Just a hospitality thing might be just a little bit of water in a bowl and sprinkle over. Not a big thing.
[4:58 PM]Varda: Not a major massage, but a way to clean the dust off for your comfort.
[4:58 PM]Arien Valar: right i better hit the road . i mean the bed .. the night doesnt get any longer unfortunately
[4:58 PM]Eönwë Valar: Sleep well Arien.
[4:58 PM]Arien Valar: i ll read up on discord tomorrow
[4:58 PM]Varda: It's about that time anyway. : ) Coming up on the hour
[4:58 PM]Treebeard: Or a big scrub brush and a tub of soapy water just for one foot at a time...
[4:58 PM]Varda: Thanks for the LotRO run!
[4:59 PM]Arien Valar: thanks for the help
[4:59 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie, Airen!
[4:59 PM]Sandalf13: Arien!
[4:59 PM]Varda: It was fun
[4:59 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie Arien! At least the sun gets shorter workdays now.
[4:59 PM]Arien Valar: Namarie !
[4:59 PM]Treebeard: Guild members need help completing instances from time to time. Glad to help.
[5:00 PM]Sandalf13: I have a big trip planned for tomorrow too, so I needs get on to get my work here finished up. I am traveling to Houston, and plan on meeting with Varda et al for dinner somewhere....maybe the best part of my overnight trip!
[5:00 PM]Varda: We look forward to it!
[5:00 PM]Eönwë Valar: But washing feet probably goes too far if they start giving you a pedicure and painting your toenails without asking.
[5:00 PM]Varda: Curling and dying hobbit foot hair. : )
[5:01 PM]Sandalf13: I would not accept painted toenails...defenitely not my stule.
[5:01 PM]Sandalf13: style
[5:01 PM]Varda: Quick! Hide them in your boots!
[5:01 PM]Sandalf13: But I would know they were there!
[5:01 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Transparent paint. Just a nice protective layer.
[5:01 PM]Treebeard: Yay for boots!
[5:01 PM]Sandalf13: Yes indeed...
[5:02 PM]Sandalf13: The most comfortable footwear that I have worn on a daily basis...except for my hiking boots...they are very comfortable too, but a bit clunky for just wearing around town and driving.
[5:02 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie until Ar's report later! I will be back.
[5:02 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
[5:02 PM]Varda: Namarie until it be morrow!
[5:03 PM]Treebeard: I must leave now. Nice participating. Namarie
[5:03 PM]Eönwë Valar: Sleep well Fangorn.
[5:03 PM]Varda: Namarie!
[5:04 PM]Eönwë Valar: I had one more slightly amusing question to pose. Shall we go one more step or shall we just call it here? :}
[5:04 PM]Varda: Now curious
[5:05 PM]Eönwë Valar: OK
[5:05 PM]Eönwë Valar: Speaking of Xal'atath.... (WoW Players should get it)
[5:05 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: (oh gods)
[5:06 PM]Eönwë Valar: If an Elf took off his/her shoes in the rain, would he/she be likely to enjoy the squish of the mud in between his/her toes, or would he/she simply walk atop it like solid ground?
[5:06 PM]Varda: I think the Elf would walk on it or quicksand like snow. On top.
[5:06 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hmm, maybe just some mud stuck on the soles.
[5:07 PM]Varda: Migh be able to purposefully get down into mud for fun toe-squish though.
[5:07 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hmm. Related question. If an elf falls on mud or snow, does it hurt like rock or are they a bit cushioned anyway?
[5:08 PM]Varda: Dextrous. Probably trained to take a fall over their long lives.
[5:08 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, sure. But I mean the surface itself.
[5:08 PM]Varda: I'm guessing it has a cushioned feel.
[5:09 PM]Eönwë Valar: See, I kinda thought the walking on snow was a choice: Legolas just knew how to step on it without sinking, but if he wanted to make snow angels he could've.
[5:09 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I suppose Elves could have some measure of control of that, yes.
[5:10 PM]Varda: I would have liked to know more about that ability. : )
[5:11 PM]Eönwë Valar: :}
[5:12 PM]Eönwë Valar: Legolas also didn't carry anyone while doing so.
[5:13 PM]Eönwë Valar: If he could've done it, it would've made more sense that he grab a Hobbit or two instead of making Aragorn and Boromir do it all.
[5:14 PM]Varda: He was scouting. Could have come across orcs and needed two hands for his bow.
[5:14 PM]Varda: But aye, it does seem like.
[5:14 PM]Varda: Wasn't he carrying a pack?
[5:14 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Just have the hobbit on your shoulders throw snowballs!
[5:14 PM]Varda: With a rock inside. : )
[5:16 PM]Eönwë Valar: Orcs in the snow? Snow-orcs? Snorks? YouTube - Snorks - Intro Opening Theme Song
[5:16 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Heh, they were just called the Snorkels in Dutch
[5:18 PM]Eönwë Valar: I forget if Legolas was carrying a pack, but if he did it would indicate he could carry some weight and still manage to not sink. Maybe a whole other person would be too much though. If he were wearing a suit of armor he might not have been able to do it.
[5:21 PM]Eönwë Valar: Ok, we'll call it here.
[5:22 PM]Varda: Might be one reason the Sindar went lightly armored?
[5:22 PM]Varda: I wonder if it was common for all elves?
[5:22 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Would've been an interesting combat advantage if you could lure the orcs into a snowfield.
[5:23 PM]Eönwë Valar: True.
[5:23 PM]Varda: Useful in the trees.
[5:23 PM]Eönwë Valar: I think it would be a learned skill, personally. Learned early during childhood games, perhaps, but learned.
[5:26 PM]Varda: Might not be as commonly used by those who remained on the ground most of the time.
[5:26 PM]Eönwë Valar: Granted, we didn't get a whole lot of information on Elves fighting in the snow, but I imagine weight would be a factor.
[5:26 PM]Varda: So less trained, maybe.
[5:27 PM]Eönwë Valar: Aye, I imagine different levels of ability as well, even if "low" is still better than most humans, heh.
[5:27 PM]Varda: True
[5:28 PM]Eönwë Valar: Like stealth. Some people are just better at being quiet, naturally or by practice.
[5:29 PM]Eönwë Valar: There are good reasons to not walk on top of snow, and even mud, so it would be rather unfortunate if Elves couldn't take advantage of those tactical situations.
[5:30 PM]Eönwë Valar: But...
[5:30 PM]Eönwë Valar: Bangs gavel.
[5:30 PM]Eönwë Valar: Aftermeeting:
[5:30 PM]Eönwë Valar: Time to let everyone be about their business :}
[5:31 PM]Varda: biz biz
[5:32 PM]Eönwë Valar: So, if we scrutinize details about walking and feet, does it mean we're being pedantic? :}
[5:34 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Image
[5:35 PM]Eönwë Valar: heh
[5:44 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Music
[5:44 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Ah, there's the way to embed.
[5:52 PM]Eönwë Valar: OK, I must be off. Take care all, good night, sleep well and have fun.
[5:54 PM]Varda: Namarie
[5:55 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
[7:43 PM]Sandalf13: Aiya Ar! Are you here?
[7:43 PM]Sandalf13: Or should I say "Aiya Ar! Ar you here?"
[8:49 PM]Varda: He is showing with a yellow crescent moon, so he is away.
[10:58 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya! Sorry, needed a quick nap which became a bit longer Guess you'll read this later. Also, my pc updated it seemed and logged off, so discord was shut down
[10:58 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Personal gaming report:
[10:59 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For (non)flashgaming, I give you Doodle Alive "Puzzle game where a little doodle comes to life.""
[11:00 PM]Varda: Welcome back : )
[11:02 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: A puzzle platformer involving a tiny doodle on a drawing table, which in each level you need to get to the diamond. Switch between being a drawing on the paper in topview, and a 3d object subject to gravity, to get where you need to go.
[11:03 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Also, there's different colors you have to make use of, keys and locks, buttons and switches... plenty of mechanics to navigate!
[11:03 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: But it's not too difficult and you can take your time
[11:04 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Still, towards the end you need to plan ahead a bit, so good luck!
[11:04 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And thanks
[11:08 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Before my usual list, I'd just like to mention the Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming browsergame/citybuilder, which I've been slowly playing for nearly 6 years now, in which I've finally reached VIP level 15 (the maximum) while remaining free to play Major milestone, mostly useful to let me buy all the stuff in the VIP shop, including gold for research.
[11:10 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Game of Thrones - "Winter is Coming" Official Website for those who want to see what I'm talking about!
[11:10 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Right. Blizzard gaming:
[11:13 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone: Level 42 on the reward track now. Few more golden card rewards and a bunch of gold, and I had enough gold to buy a new shaman hero skin + card back, Lady Vashj.
[11:15 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: As expected, a new quest event. Unexpectedly - though that's probably on me - it's not for the new expansion, but for the 20th anniversary of WoW, on which Hearthstone is based, with main quests focusing on horde, then alliance, and then Azeroth as a whole. Large numbers of minions to be played, but they're weekly quests so there's plenty of time.
[11:16 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Brawl is Send In The Murlocs: Choose a class, get a few random class spells and a whole bunch of random murlocs.
[11:17 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Some randomness and luck required, but they're fun to play with and synergize so I don't mind as much. The weekly quest requiring 5 wins rather than 5 games again, though, is a bit annoying.
[11:22 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Warcraft Rumble: Still no new collection level, but getting a bit closer. Got a bunch more minis leveled to 19, though 20 is very far away (edited)
[11:24 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Anniversary track is still going on, including me getting a Gilded tower skin, affecting both the towers along the way and your starting base. Looks quite impressive to me!
[11:26 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Also a Sylvanas event is now going on for her two-family remake, with stars for undead and horde minis among other rewards. No unique rewards, and some purchase-based challenges, in a short weekly format, so I'm not going to get all of it, but have been getting a few nice upgrades from it.
[11:37 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: In the dungeon, got my horde leader Cairne through level 22, completing his army upgrade slots. After that I got my second leader, Grom Hellscream, from level 5 to 8. In the current blackrock week, though, no luck with Drakkisath on level 22 yet.
[11:39 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: In the heroic sigil campaign, defeated Thalnos with all families. It was a tough one, with banshees all over the place, so for some families I had to include a few special minis, including angry chickens, since they'll only possess one of them
[11:39 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Also defeated Herod with 2 families, who is a bit simpler to beat higher level.
[11:39 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So now I'm at 123 sigils!
[11:41 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: As for quality upgrades, got Whelp Eggs and Sylvanas (there she is again!) to rare quality, and got the second talents for both of them as well as Hogger. That once again just leaves a talent for the Batlings to get at the moment.
[11:41 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:
[11:42 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Still raiding! Earlier bosses are going rather more smoothly now, but no progress on heroic Queen Ansurek.
[11:43 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Weekly quests are world quests, and more Classic Timewalking. Been doing that, but no upgrades from it. Not that I expected any at my ilevel.
[11:45 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: From the anniversary events, got my last cloth appearance from the green dragon Lethon, just leaving one item from both Taerar and Emeriss.
[11:45 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Also poked Kazzak and Azuregos for the weekly quest, and the former gave me a new pet! Apparently the only pet in this anniversary event which drops rather than being bought, so I'm happy with Lil'Kaz
[11:48 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Also got a new cloak appearance from the Awakening the Machine weekly event, the Machine-Warden's Cog, and completed the currency for this month's Trading Post, though I haven't gone in to spend it yet.
[11:50 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Finally, Delves! Got my last Delve story done, in the Underkeep, and then decided to give Zek'vir a go on his first difficulty. Took a few tries, but got it done, completing a meta achievement which gave me a new mount! The Ivory Goliathus, a giant beetle Beetles seem to have a new model and special animation, so that's nice.
[11:51 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: From defeating Zek'vir I also got 2 new cloak appearances, and the Toxic Victory toy.
[11:53 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Then I decided to try out Delve tiers 9 to 11! Rather tougher indeed, and while I did complete one of each to get the High Explorer title (fitting, considering the Delve story I did on T11 turned out to be the one where you get high on spores), I'd say it's not worth it for currency and experience for Brann. Instead, I've decided to go for 2 Tier 8s a day now to increase my undercoin gain, as dps rather than tank. Seems to work so far, though I do need Brann as healer.
[11:54 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, and Brann got to level 46 now, massively increasing the experience required per level. Even with 2 a day, I wonder if he'll make it to 60.
[11:55 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's my report for the week!
[11:59 PM]Varda: Thank you, Phar : )
