Before-Meeting

April 1, 2024

[6:40 AM]Eönwë Valar: Ok, so I've read the 01Apr2024 WoW patch notes, and there's only one thing that got a real chuckle out of me: Shark Plato.

April 7, 2024

[3:49 PM]Varda: That does sound like a pair of words that don't match. : )

[3:57 PM]Sandalf13: Shark nado?

[3:57 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Plato shark, dudududududu ♪

[3:59 PM]Arien Valar: i didnt find them too bad actually .. okay not as good as maybe they had been but i wouldnt rubbish them i liiked the nurse warrior as well

[4:00 PM]Sandalf13: I'll sneak this one in, even though it is not exactly Tolkien related, but it really is good, and the meeting has not yet started...

Sharknado

Posed picture from Sharknado

[4:01 PM]Sandalf13: Check out the REAL photo on the left...I am sure that you all know the original in the Louvre...

[4:01 PM]Eönwë Valar: Heya.

[4:01 PM]Varda: Aiya : )

[4:01 PM]Eönwë Valar: The Sharknado series was amusing to watch because it didn't take itself seriously at all.

[4:01 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya!

[4:02 PM]Varda: It was the mix of words that made it amusing for both cases.

[4:02 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I watched em all as well, and I agree The first one was almost plausible with the sharks being picked up out of the sea, but everything else was just silly.

[4:03 PM]Sandalf13: I meant on the right....he he

[4:03 PM]Varda: @Bounder @Guild-friend Valar Guild meeting time! Come on in. The water's fine and you can be the sharks.

[4:03 PM]Eönwë Valar: But Shark Plato (do do dododo) , yes, part is the similarity, but just imagining a philosopher shark.

[4:04 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Not sure about the Louvre, but at first glance I'm thinking of a painting famously used in Ferris Bueller...

[4:04 PM]Varda: The Philosophy of the Shark. Could have fun with that.

[4:35 PM]Varda: Petty dwarves.

[4:35 PM]Varda: JRRT used to work on a dictionary, really knew his words. So from Merriam-Webster:

[4:35 PM]Varda: Definition of petty from the Merriam-Webster dictionary:

4:35 PM]Varda: Definition of PETTY

[4:36 PM]Varda: 1: having secondary rank or importance : minor, subordinate.

[4:36 PM]Varda: 2: having little or no importance or significance.

[4:36 PM]Varda: 3: marked by or reflective of narrow interests and sympathies : small-minded.

[4:37 PM]Varda: What made the petty dwarves receive such an unpleasant name? What happened to them?

[4:37 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Heh, I recall the second meaning also being applied to hobbits.

[4:37 PM]Varda: Little did they know... cough

[4:38 PM]Varda: Ok, stopping with the short jokes now.

[4:38 PM]Varda: To begin with, JRRT knew the old mythologies. The dwarves were not the good guys in his early work. Over time, he came up with the dwarves we now know.

[4:39 PM]Eönwë Valar: The Petty Dwarves were Dwarves kicked out of other Dwarven kingdoms for (as I recall at the moment) unspecified reasons.

[4:39 PM]Varda: There were reasons. I should go look up the quote but not going to right this moment.

[4:39 PM]Varda: Petty dwarves such as Mim did not continue into the history, having made themselves undesirables for pretty much everyone.

[4:39 PM]Varda: They could have rebounded, become valuable builders, but their temperament seems to have been against them.

[4:40 PM]Varda: Perhaps they were too infected by Morgoth.

[4:40 PM]Varda: One wonders if their weak moral sense might have left them with low defenses against Morgoth's Ring as they tunneled, unlike the other dwarves that had honor and courage mixed with stubborness.

[4:40 PM]Varda: We hear of other petty dwarves but read directly only about the last ones that were wiped out: Mim and his sons.

[4:40 PM]Varda: They were already doomed unless they could attract wives from the other dwarves, perhaps by showing extreme merit in building and tunneling.

[4:40 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Even the name sounds petty.

[4:40 PM]Varda: Even then, they would have been mixed, but at least their family line could have survived.

[4:41 PM]Sandalf13: Of course, I have a bias...petty officers in the Navy (at least the U.S. Navy, and I am sure others as well...) are FAR from petty.

[4:41 PM]Varda: That's different, aye.

[4:42 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Another possible meaning of petty: inclined to pet animals

[4:42 PM]Varda: : )

[4:42 PM]Sandalf13: I have a petty photo to probably post post-meetinng.

[4:42 PM]Eönwë Valar: Sil says the were "banished in ancient days from the great Dwarf-cities of the East" so they seem not to be exiles from Nogrod or Belegost, and they do seem to have had enough time to become their own people.

[4:43 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The exiles. Reduced significance.

[4:43 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I guess petty could indicate their status among dwarfkind as well as their personalities.

[4:43 PM]Sandalf13: Maybe they were simply smaller...

[4:43 PM]Eönwë Valar: They came into Beleriend before the Dwarves of Nogrod and Belegost, but it seems those Dwarves knew about them.

[4:44 PM]Varda: Mim should not have tried to murder Finrod Felagund in his sleep. Not a good thing to do to a customer.

[4:44 PM]Eönwë Valar: They'd "diminished in stature and smithcraft" and taken to lives of stealth. They're the Dwarves that first encountered Thingol's people, and were slain because all the Sindar knew was they were being attacked; they couldn't get a good look at them. (edited)

[4:48 PM]Varda: Also, at first the Sindar thought they were some kind of animals. Later they discovered they were small dwarves and stopped that behavior. Too late to really be friends.

[4:48 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Animals with beards.

[4:48 PM]Varda: The petty dwarves weren't even friends with regular dwarves, though.

[4:49 PM]Varda: As Eonwe said, they didn't get a good look at them at first. 4:50 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hmhm Still, weird idea!

[4:50 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: "Is this animal... wearing boots?" "..Oh. Oops."

[4:50 PM]Varda: If they're attacking, they're probably not friends.

[4:52 PM]Varda: Anyway, they died out, leaving JRRT with just the dwarf-types that he wanted to continue writing. Neat way of doing a dwarven re-write that is also a good read.

[4:52 PM]Varda: Just made them history!

[4:53 PM]Varda: When someone says, "You're history!", be wary!

[4:53 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Good to know you'll be remembered anyway

[4:54 PM]Varda: Aye. It would be nice to be remembered fondly, but it beats nothing. : )

[4:54 PM]Varda: Sandalf, could you explain what a petty officer is?

[4:57 PM]Sandalf13: Yes: A petty officer is in rank above an E-3 (one begins as an E-1, then becomes and E-2, and finally, an E-3). If one is in the deck ranks, the E's are titled Seaman Recruit, Seaman Apprentice, and Seaman (in the old days, "Able-bodied Seaman"). In the Engineering ranks, one is a Fireman Recruit, Fireman Apprentice, then Fireman. To becomse an E-4 means one as achieved the level of "Petty Officer 3rd Class," followed by P.O. 2nd Class, and P.O. 1st CLass...the last being a very good achievement. AFter that, one grades up into the Chief Ranks...the highest ranks for an enlisted member of the Navy. An Ensign, the lowers officer rank, appears above that of a Master Chief, but far be it from a mere Ensign to upbraid a Master Chief....unless he is pretty sure he is right! he he

[4:59 PM]Sandalf13: I stared out my Naval career as an FR, then an FA, and finally an FR in the Naval Reserve, then went to OCS and became an Ensign in, of all things, the Engineering Department of the USS Caloosahatche (AO-98).

[5:00 PM]Sandalf13: I mean finally an FN....not an FR! Sorry. My mind goes quicker than my fingers sometimes.

[5:00 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So it's petty officer, chief, officer?

[5:00 PM]Sandalf13: Yes....exactly right...

[5:01 PM]Sandalf13: The officer ranks are Ensign...Lieutenant 2nd Grad...Lieutenant...Lieutenant COmmander....Commander....Captain...Admiral.

[5:02 PM]Sandalf13: During WWII, every lead boat that led the troops ashore had an Ensign assigned to lead the invading forces...a high mortality position, unfortunately.

[5:02 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: A tempting target?

[5:03 PM]Sandalf13: Yup. I was 20 years old when I went to Officer Candidate School, and I was informed I would be a father figure to the 18 and 19 year olds in my Division. I remember laughing so hard at that in my class, that the Lieutenant teaching our class said "Mr. Kaplan, exactly what do you find so funny?" I couldn't stop laughing.

[5:04 PM]Varda: Only a year or two younger, your kids. : )

[5:05 PM]Eönwë Valar: Them whippersnappers.

[5:05 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: "When you reach my age..."

[5:05 PM]Sandalf13: Exactly. I struggled with that the first couple of years on active duty...by the time I reached 22 or 23, I sort of had if figured out. I am a very slow learner.

[5:06 PM]Eönwë Valar: I can imagine trying to give a papa-bear type speech to a guy you'd be barhopping with if the situation were different.

[5:06 PM]Sandalf13: Most of the new Ensigns in my classes were already in their mid-20s.

[5:06 PM]Sandalf13: I did bar-hop with them sometimes, sort of against the rules...but I did.

[5:07 PM]Eönwë Valar: Well I won't tell anyone, heh.

[5:07 PM]Sandalf13: It is all behind me now. Sanford S. Kaplan, Commander, USNR.

[5:07 PM]Varda: ./salute

[5:07 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: < o

[5:08 PM]Varda: And we're glad you're here, writing for us, chatting with us, adding to our education. : )

[5:08 PM]Sandalf13: Thank you for indulging me.

[5:08 PM]Varda: and for indulging us. : )

[5:09 PM]Varda: And 'tis the hour!

[5:09 PM]Varda: a gavel on a raft poles along the waxed table

[5:09 PM]Varda: the pole bops the startled hammerpad

[5:09 PM]Varda: bop!

After-Meeting

[5:09 PM]Varda: After-meeting!

[5:09 PM]Varda: Free chat, including about petty dwarves. : )

[5:12 PM]Sandalf13: I would like to post a photo of a sunset above the Arctic Circle, about 72 degrees North latitude, off the coast of Norway, September, 1973. Taken by Lt(jg) Kaplan...it is not a very good picture, as it is a picture of a picture, but I was thinking of Arien, and had to dig this out...

Sunset

[5:12 PM]Varda: ahhh nice!

[5:13 PM]Sandalf13: I still remember standing on the fantail of my ship, watching the sunset...cold...but beautiful.

[5:14 PM]Varda: Cold in the sunshine

[5:14 PM]Sandalf13: Only 18 degrees south of the North Pole!

[5:14 PM]Varda: You had to duck a flying sleigh pulled by reindeer, no doubt?

[5:15 PM]Sandalf13: he he

[5:15 PM]Sandalf13: And the seas were certainly wine-dark...

[5:16 PM]Varda: Really getting into poetry territory.

[5:16 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Nostalgia'll do that

[5:16 PM]Varda: and such pictures.

[5:17 PM]Varda: Imagine what it must be like for an ancient elf, remembering.

[5:17 PM]Sandalf13: Wine-dark sea is a traditional English translation of oînops póntos (οἶνοψ πόντος, IPA: /ôi̯.nops pón.tos/), from oînos (οἶνος, "wine") + óps (ὄψ, "eye; face"), a Homeric epithet. Karlovasi, Greece - demonstrating color variation in the Mediterranean Sea

A literal translation is "wine-face sea" (wine-faced, wine-eyed). It is attested five times in the Iliad and twelve times in the Odyssey

[1] often to describe rough, stormy seas.

[5:21 PM]Sandalf13: One future chapter of my book will include a section on Tolkien's choice of colors in the LoTR...a very interesting subject.

[5:32 PM]Varda: Looking forward to that. Not something I've thought much about.

[5:35 PM]Sandalf13: As soon as I get Chapter Four updated, I will be liberated to work on the new chapters I have been planning for years...once they start, it will be like a dike breaking...

[5:35 PM]Sandalf13: You will be hearing from me soon, I hope.

[5:51 PM]Varda: the...dike!!!

[5:51 PM]Varda: That would be great. : )

6:25 PM]Eönwë Valar: Separate Ways (Worlds apart) Youtube.

[6:47 PM]Varda: Back later. : )

[8:37 PM]Sandalf13: May it be so.

[8:42 PM]Pallando-Valar: I missed the meeting today because I'm driving around getting in position for the eclipse tomorrow.

[8:43 PM]Pallando-Valar: I will miss the meeting next week because I will be casting Anger Games 6, an eve tournament.

[8:43 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Eclipse hunter Pallando!

[8:43 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And good luck

[8:44 PM]Sandalf13: Aiya Ar!

[8:44 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya Almost ready for report!

[8:44 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Been a bit busy tonight with last minute easter events in World of Warcraft.

[8:44 PM]Sandalf13: Sehr gut! @Pallando-Valar I missed the meeting today because I'm driving around getting in position for the eclipse tomorrow.

[8:46 PM]Eönwë Valar: Oh no, Pallando's taking the sun from us! Give it back!

[8:46 PM]Pallando-Valar: Talk to Arien, she's the one taking time off!

[8:46 PM]Eönwë Valar: :}

[8:54 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Personal gaming report:

[8:54 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For (non)flashgaming, I'll give you Unfold 2

[8:55 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: A puzzle game where you have to drag colored tiles to unfold them, that is, duplicate them symmetrically, with groups of samecolored tiles being folded together.

[8:56 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Plan ahead to fill the entire figure!

[8:59 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard gaming:

[8:59 PM]Sandalf13: Lay it on me...

[9:00 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone:

Level 49 on the reward track now, with another golden card reward gotten.

[9:01 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Completed the expansion launch event quest, with a few free card packs as rewards, and a warlock class skin, Bobble Mal'ganis, very much in the toy workshop theme

[9:02 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Brawl is the Yellow-Brick Brawl, based on the Wizard of Oz. Each player has an invulnerable Dorothee in the middle of the board, who grants taunt to minions on her right and charge to minions on her left.

[9:03 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I made a deck mostly based around eggs which spawn more expensive creatures, mostly dragons, on death; putting them in the taunt spot makes for some good power efficiciency

[9:04 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The way a deck is built for this brawl is that you choose 10 cards and you get 3 of each. This also lends itself to some more gimmicky decks, where legendaries can be played up to 3 times. But the egg-build had a decent enough winrate for me

[9:06 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Warcraft Rumble:

Another collection level, up to 30! And thanks to the rumble guild points hitting 10000, unlocking and boosting the new Witch Doctor mini, it's already halfway to 31 as well. 9:08 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: It's Undead week in the dungeon now, and I beat level 16 with Baron Rivendare as leader. Thanks to that army upgrade, the entire army is now at least at silver. 6 to go!

[9:09 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Defeated Drakkisath in the sigil campaign, last boss of the normal version of said campaign! That puts me at 75 sigils, halfway to the total.

[9:10 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: After that I started on the heroic campaign, which is basically the same fights over the same maps as the normal campaign; but the opponent's levels have gone up by 10, there's an additional mechanic, and you need to beat it with leaders from all 5 families to get the rewards for each fight, another sigil and some gold.

[9:10 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: But for each family you beat a fight with, you also get an experience tome, quite useful.

[9:11 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So far I've defeated the first fight, Goldtooth, with 4 families, so that's one remaining.

[9:11 PM]Sandalf13: Is that Goldfinger's brother?

[9:11 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: It's a kobold, so that'd be some interesting parentage 🙂

[9:12 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: First few maps of the heroic campaign should be easy enough, as the first heroic fights have lower levels than the last few normal fights of the campaign, so I outlevel it a bit. The extra mechanic can hurt though. Specialized decks might be necessary later on, though for now my regular decks are working.

[9:13 PM]Sandalf13: Goldfinger

[9:13 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: That's the benefit of having to take 5 times as long to progress, though, as it should give me plenty of time to get some more experience along the way 🙂

[9:15 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: As for quality upgrades, other than the new Witch Doctor mini, which started at uncommon quality already, I also got the talent for Sneed, the horde leader, and gathered enough gold to upgrade the Gargoyle straight to rare, giving it 2 bonus levels and allowing me to buy 2 talents for it. That'll happen next week I'm sure!

[9:15 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:

[9:16 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: No raiding this week, as the new season doesn't start for a few more weeks, which gave me plenty of time for the events going on. 9:17 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Through the brawl I got to honor level 126, and for the weekly Timewalking quest I'm now at 4 out of 5 dungeons. Would've done the 5th tonight but the Noblegarden event had priority

[9:18 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Indeed, a lot of time was spent on the new Noblegarden features! I did the new questline on my main, getting the Duck Disguiser toy, and the first of 6 duck disguises, as I chose the mallard colorscheme. The other 5 will have to come in later years, apparently.

[9:20 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There's also a new rare event boss up for it, Daetan Swiftplume, a druid in duckform. You can get loot from him daily per character, with a chance of a mount, and 6 transmog items spread over 2 Spring Reveler's Turquoise sets.

[9:20 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: At first I went for him daily with my main and my 4 60+ alts, and it started out well, as I got the mount on the second day and 5 out of the 6 pieces in 2 or 3 days as well.

[9:21 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Only piece missing was the Sun Hat, which wouldn't drop on any of my characters all week, so tonight, after completing it with the standard 5, I decided to send in all my lower level alts as well, in one last effort.

[9:22 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: That included several level 10s, which can't fly and are actually in danger in the Elwynn Forest zone where the fight takes place. Indeed, I even brought my bankalt/dwarf shadowpriest who I think hadn't left the city of Ironforge in about.. 16 years?

[9:24 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: It took me all the way up to the new alts from the allied races, but with only 3 or 4 alts remaining, Calmoria my dark iron elemental shaman finally got the hat!

[9:25 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So that's all the rewards from the boss gotten, and next year it'll just be about getting another duck disguise. I'm happy to not have to kill him so often anymore

[9:26 PM]Sandalf13: Always nice not to have to kill someone, I suppose...

[9:27 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: ...And since the quest is delivered at the infamous town of Goldshire, all my alts are now left behind in the Goldshire Inn, which is pretty much the most wretched hive of scum and villainy in all of the game, as many players there get up to some really shady roleplaying... I hope they won't get traumatized!

[9:27 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And true, always nice not to have to kill someone, especially if the outcome is so random

[9:30 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And the rest of my WoW time was spent in Plunderstorm, getting a bunch more renown levels, up to level 20. Along the way I got a bunch more appearances of clothing, a new gun, a new sword, a toy sign which you can place on the ground, and finally for level 20, the Royal Seafeather parrot mount!

[9:31 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: This also got me the achievement for 500 mounts, currently last in the series, which rewarded me yet another mount, the Otterwordly Ottuk Carrier, a sort of transcended flying otter, looking very nice

[9:32 PM]Sandalf13: blue parrot

[9:32 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Yep, there's the parrot!

[9:34 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So yeah, halfway through the Plunderstorm renown now, with still some rewards to go. But we'll get there

[9:34 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's my report for the week!

[9:34 PM]Sandalf13: Super duper! Hope you have a good week ahead.

[9:34 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Thanks! You too

[9:35 PM]Varda: Thanks, Phar : )

[9:44 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, almost forgot, my enhancement shaman Caljaenor got a level out of the noblegarden alting as well tonight, reaching level 13

[9:49 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!

[9:49 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie!

Thus ends this week's meeting. Come back and see us next week!
