[8:35 PM]Sandalf13: SPECIAL NOTE for all you Valar Guild Fans! While doing some research for my Chapter Four (History and Geopolitics of the Third Age of Middle-earth) I came across this article while tracking down a reference that appeared in the 28 March 2003 edition of National Review Magazine. The article is available for reading online (The National Review allow you two free articles per month.) Good reading! Hope you get a chance to take a look. The Enduring Appeal of J. R. R. Tolkien, from the National Review. What explains his unique and lasting success?

March 26, 2024

[5:24 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Heh, there's another WoW player in this plunderstorm match called Sandalf.

March 27, 2024

[9:57 AM]Sandalf13: Maybe you can introduce us!

March 28, 2024

[5:45 PM]Eönwë Valar: So I gave Plunderstorm a try. Amusing but it's PvP so not really my thing.

[5:51 PM]Eönwë Valar: But I could see them bringing back the Scourge Invasion (or a similutude of it) in that fashion, and probably get more engagement since it'll be separate from live servers. (edited)

[5:52 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Not really my thing either, I lose the vast majority of my confrontations with other players in there. But it starts with a decent enough pve aspect every match, fighting mobs and looting spells and chests and plunder.

[5:53 PM]Eönwë Valar: I imagine them bringing back all the end-of-expansion events (the ones that had them anyway) in some fashion like that.

[5:53 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Especially with getting 800 plunder for completing your first captain's quest every day, it's a doable grind.

[5:53 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And the collectables make it worth it for me

[5:56 PM]Eönwë Valar: My WoW interest is running low this expansion, and Shadlowands wasn't really any better. We'll see what the next one brings I suppose. The only "collectible" I really care about is the green flame Ashbringer to complete my Green Paladin ensemble, and I know I'm not going to get in a Mythic +15 for that, particularly after the changes, so unless more cool Paladin stuff comes my way, not a whole lot to get excited about. (edited)

[5:56 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: hehe

[5:58 PM]Eönwë Valar: If Void Elves got Paladins, I get the feeling I'd roll one, probably 90% probability just to do it, if Night Elves got them, probably, lets say 75-80% likely. (edited)

[5:59 PM]Eönwë Valar: They just spent a sidequest series reviving the Tyr's Hand, so I guess we'll see what's to come.

[6:00 PM]Eönwë Valar: Hate to see the Silver Hand/ Argent Dawn/ Argent Crusade go by the wayside though.

[6:07 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, just did my first plunder match of the day, landed on top of an elite, completed my quest instantly to end up with over half of tonight's renown level... and that was without making a move

[6:08 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Then actually managed to kill someone, got killed by someone else, and now watching to see if he wins

[6:11 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Sure enough, he won! Dying to the winner isn't so bad!

[6:23 PM]Eönwë Valar: hehehe

[6:27 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There we go, renown 10

[8:02 PM]Eönwë Valar: Congrats :}

March 30, 2024

[6:57 AM]Pengolodh: Update: I have completely stopped playing the new WOW expansion. It really didn't hold my interest after level 20. I expected more complexity when it came to the Runes etc. Im back playing LOTRO, slowly made my way into moria (under-leveled.), which means i had to back out to eregion to quest there. I must make the argument, they should allow you into Moria and quest underleveled, especially since Runekeeper can handle (non elite) enemies like 6 /7 enemies above them. (grumpy face lol) But i must admit, I am enjoying Eregion

[6:58 AM]Pengolodh: Playing Valhiem as-well these days. I am enjoying the build system and the very expansive lands. It would be cool, if they had a middleearth version of this game. I think it would be very popular.

[4:46 PM]Varda: Anyway, back to FotR:

[4:46 PM]Varda: In the chapter "Strider"

[4:47 PM]Varda: Strider was attempting to explain who he was to the hobbits after they were all in the room away from the main area.

[4:48 PM]Varda: Gandalf should have introduced him so he would not have this problem, but no Gandalf!

[4:48 PM]Varda: That made it even worses, as if he might have had something to do with it.

[4:48 PM]Varda: So just as he tries to explain,

[4:49 PM]Varda: Mr. Butterbur (and it says Mr.) along with Nob enter the room.

[4:49 PM]Varda: Butterbur then without seeing Strider launches into his own story.

[4:49 PM]Sandalf13: Back.

[4:50 PM]Varda: He has a letter from Gandalf

[4:50 PM]Varda: Welcome back : )

[4:50 PM]Varda: and that brings the story back around in a well-wrapped circle.

[4:51 PM]Varda: tips hat to JRRT's story-telling

[4:51 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Seems convenient 😄

[4:51 PM]Varda: It goes on for a fair while, before it gets right to it.

[4:52 PM]Varda: Gandalf knew there would be a problem, and Butterbur was slow to deliver the message.

[4:52 PM]Varda: So there were two problems, at last righted.

[4:52 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, the exact timing, I mean 🙂

[4:52 PM]Varda: Since Frodo had just arrrived and was in a place where words could be exchanged in private, it made sense.

[4:52 PM]Sandalf13: Actually, he never did deliver it...it just had it on hand when he spoke with the four hobbits....maybe that was a delivery, but certainly not in the way that Gandalf intended it to happen!

[4:53 PM]Varda: Note also, Nob is privy to these secrets.

[4:53 PM]Varda: Frodo read the letter to himself, then passed it to Pippin and Sam.

[4:54 PM]Varda: This is when the letter was delivered.

[4:54 PM]Varda: And right, this was not the way Gandalf intended it to go.

[4:55 PM]Varda: and Frodo was certainly not supposed to have turned invisible in the common room. : )

[4:55 PM]Varda: The letter warns against Frodo's using the Ring for any reason, and he just did. hah!

[4:55 PM]Arien Valar: but but .. it was just an accident 🙂

[4:56 PM]Sandalf13: Or was it?

[4:56 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: You'd almost think Butterbur had read the letter and only remembered about it when he saw Frodo put on the ring. "Oops, I was supposed to warn him!"

[4:57 PM]Arien Valar: probably not to be honest .. the riders at that point were not too far away and there were people in the common room that had been intimiidated or worse by them 4:57 PM]Varda: Quote: Frodo looked carefully at the seal before he broke it.

[4:58 PM]Sandalf13: I suppose that Gandalf sealed his letter, and that Butterbur (forgetful yes...but not dishonest) would not open it...

[4:58 PM]Sandalf13: Hah. You beat me to it, as usual.

[4:58 PM]Varda: Aye, Butterbur was honest.

[4:58 PM]Varda: Good point about Butterbur!

[4:59 PM]Varda: Also, Frodo recognized Gandalf's writing inside. So he has read other things from Gandalf.

[4:59 PM]Varda: Quote: Inside, written in the wizard's strong but graceful script, was the following message:

[4:59 PM]Varda: end quote.

[5:00 PM]Varda: You can look in the Strider chapter and find this fast, since the letter is in italics.

[5:00 PM]Varda: Annnnd time.

[5:01 PM]Varda: (and kudos to everyone for handling the crazy times of day we are trying to coordinate in!)

[5:01 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, I assume there was plenty of communication between Bilbo/Frodo and Gandalf before then, not all of it in person. Dwarves delivering letters as they passed through, for example.

After-Meeting

[5:01 PM]Varda: After-meeting:

[5:01 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: So Frodo has good reason to know Gandalf's handwriting.

[5:02 PM]Varda: I am thrilled that you continued the topic! Thank you!

[5:02 PM]Varda: After-meeting is a great place to continue, while giving those that need to leave some comfort in their leave-taking.

[5:03 PM]Varda: Bilbo did indeed continue having a great many visitors, elven and dwarven.

[5:03 PM]Varda: His house had to be really interesting for Frodo to grow up in. : )

[5:04 PM]Varda: I wonder just how much of a safe spot, like a hotel, it might have been. It does not seem to be mentioned that way, but hmm.

[5:04 PM]Varda: At least they could pass through his land with welcome.

[5:07 PM]Varda: In other news, at least the LotRO launcher has a different error message. Something is being messed with.

[5:07 PM]Sandalf13: I suspect that Frodo received a more cosmopolitan view of the world than any of his contemporary Hobbits, growing up in Bilbo's home.

[5:09 PM]Sandalf13: And some of that must have rubbed off on Sam, sincw he spent so much of his time "doing for Mr. Bilbo."

[5:14 PM]Arien Valar: well Frodo certainly did , since was looking for news of the world outside , contacting travelling Elves and Dwarves

[5:15 PM]Varda: Sam knew a lot more than he let on, important member of the "Conspiracy" of Frodo's concerned friends.

[5:34 PM]Sandalf13: Did you do anything special for Easter Sunday?

[5:34 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Nah. I'm having a sort of easter brunch with my family tomorrow though.

[5:35 PM]Sandalf13: Good for you! I hope you enjoy a lovely brunch, full of tasty bits!

[5:35 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Thanks 🙂

[5:36 PM]Sandalf13: Do the children in your area search for painted/dyed Easter eggs?

[5:38 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Not sure, actually! I know we used to paint eggs in elementary school, but I've not been around children for a long time. We had a tradition once where we'd hide tiny chocolate eggs around the living room... or other small objects in case we couldn't find them and things started to smell or something... 😉

[5:38 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: But really, when it comes to my family, Easter's just not a big deal.

[5:38 PM]Sandalf13: Maybe since you now have a nephew, you will be reintroduced to the ways of children.

[6:12 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Duin- en Bollenstreek

[6:27 PM]Sandalf13: Of course, the image pops up on my screen when I close my laptop lid for a moment and walk away...if I am gone about 5 minutes, a new image appears when I open up my laptop cover before I log in...I see the pictre all the time, but when I try to get it now, I cannot find it! Of course. I will try to take a screenshot somehow the next time I see it, and send it to you (Ar).

[6:27 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: hehe, sure 🙂

[8:32 PM]Eönwë Valar: Pro tip: Those images are actually stored on your computer.

[8:33 PM]Sandalf13: Where? I looked in the wrong places, I guess...and I started with a seach from the taskbar.

[8:33 PM]Eönwë Valar: I found a simple guide once on how to find them and grab them so you can add them to your personal image collection rather than losing them when Microsoft updates the photo list.

[8:33 PM]Eönwë Valar: Let me see if I still have a link to it.

[8:33 PM]Sandalf13: Thanks!

[8:36 PM]Eönwë Valar: Don't have the old link, but looks like I was able to find an actually official answer, so even better:

[8:36 PM]Eönwë Valar: Microsoft's Windows 10 picture folder

[8:37 PM]Eönwë Valar: Answer by Time Lady is the one you want.

[8:38 PM]Sandalf13: Thank you! I am browsing through the site right now...it looks like this is the place to be, and will look for Time Lady! Thanks again.

[8:39 PM]Eönwë Valar: Should be first answer on that page.

[8:40 PM]Eönwë Valar: Shouldn't have to do more than scroll down just a little bit.

[8:51 PM]Eönwë Valar: For fun: When Honor Dies by Miracle Of Sound (Ghost Of Tsushima) YouTube

[9:10 PM]Sandalf13: I must bid everyone left here a fond Namarie. I have a busy work day tomorrow....believe it or not...and I need to get ready to wrap up the weekend. Namarie all, and have a wonderful week! Sei gesund!

[9:12 PM]Eönwë Valar: Sleep well Sandalf.

[9:13 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie Sandalf! Report will be here waiting to be read 😉

[10:15 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Personal gaming report:

[10:15 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For (non)flashgaming, here's "Trial of Temptation" on Kongregate.

[10:16 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: A funny interactive fiction game where you are tasked with taking a hammer up the mountain to hit a gong, and withstand all temptations along the way.

[10:17 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Unlock all 10 possible endings by making different choices and other things to figure out 🙂

[10:28 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard gaming:

[10:31 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone: made it to level 40 on the reward track, with a few new card rewards along the way.

[10:32 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: New expansion's opening quest event is going, and I've completed most of the quests, getting to almost 3000 points out of 4000. Shouldn't be too difficult to get the final rewards!

[10:33 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Brawl is the noblegarden one. Choose a class, get 10 random class cards, and a bunch of different dyes to give specific properties to eggs that spawn on your board, hatching minions.

[10:33 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Some randomness abound 🙂

[10:34 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Warcraft rumble: No new collection level yet.

[10:35 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Did get a dungeon level done with Cairne, level 15. 16's a bit out of my league.

[10:35 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: This week it's blackrock week, and I've tried to get some dungeon runs done with Drakkisath, but no luck.

[10:36 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Got one more fight done in the sigil campaign, Rend Blackhand. One more remains! This is one where Drakkisath is the opponent, even as I'm using him as a leader 😄 Interesting layout with buttons that, when walked on, set other parts of the map on fire. Bit weird, will take some figuring out.

[10:38 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Got the Ghoul's quality upgraded, and the talent for him, while also getting the talent for the fire elemental. And finished the week with upgrading Sneed, the horde goblin leader, to uncommon as well.

[10:39 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:

[10:40 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Another Fyrakk kill on heroic, our last raid in this tier, as we're taking a break until the new Awakened season starts in a few weeks. We didn't have much left to get, and people were getting tired of the place. Next season we'll want to do em all again when they Awaken so we can get a new mount 🙂

[10:42 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Two weekly quests this week. Mythic dungeons, which I got done pretty easily, but unfortunately the reward item was one I'd gotten a few weeks ago.

[10:43 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The other one is pet pvp battles, always nice with my winter gnome team. In fact, apparently they're so intimidating that 3 of my wins were gotten by people retreating at the start of the match 😄

[10:44 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Not much time for alting this week, as I spent a good time in Plunderstorm, getting 7 more renown levels, getting to 13.

[10:45 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: That got me a whole lot of mog appearances, as well as the Silver Tidestallion, an underwater seahorse mount, and 2 pets. One to use in Classic, and one to use in Retail (and Plunderstorm even), a crab pet of sorts called Bubbles.

[10:46 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Funny, as we in the WoW group had mentioned the Powerpuff Girls earlier in the week... we got a pet called Buttercup a few months ago, now one called Bubbles... only Blossom remains 😉

[10:46 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's my report for the week!

[10:46 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie 🙂

[10:49 PM]Varda: Thanks and namarie 🙂

Thus ends this week's meeting. Come back and see us next week!
