[4:02 PM]Eönwë Valar: Mario Day 2024 YouTube
[4:02 PM]Varda: It's also lose one hour day for Valar time aka Eastern time.
[4:03 PM]Varda: So we may have some mix-ups getting together for a bit.
[4:03 PM]Varda: Any other membership news? 4:03 PM]Sandalf13: Aiya all! Just got back in from a 3 mile run. 64 Grad F Today, ran in shorts and a T-Shirt. Heavy snow expected on Thursday.
[4:03 PM]Varda: O wow on both, Sandalf!
[4:04 PM]Varda: Eonwe will be iffy after this meeting on making it here. Real life does that. But he's still doing tons of other stuff for the gang!
[4:05 PM]Sandalf13: Many thanks to Eonwe! We all appreciate his work, I am sure, as well as yours!
[4:05 PM]Varda: Eonwe's work passes my understanding, in coding. : )
[4:06 PM]Varda: But I see the results and they are amazing.
[4:06 PM]Varda: Web:
[4:06 PM]Varda: Here's the fun stuff!

[4:07 PM]Varda: "Until It's Gone"
[4:09 PM]Sandalf13: I gave a talk to my JWV Post 344 this morning on the geology of the Front Range and the Great Plains. Some nice pix inside!
[4:10 PM]Varda: O wowl! You've had a really big day!
[4:11 PM]Sandalf13: I would glad to send you a copy of the powerpoint by E-Mail, as it is not Tolkien related, although the Commander, who has looked at our site at my request, is thinking of having a Tolkien discussion at a non-monthly meeting sometime in the future. Most of the members, as is true of most vets organizations, has semi-retired or retired folks as members, so we could do a coffee meeting sometime.
[4:13 PM]Varda: I add urls to your author page to outside stuff, if you have such a thing for the powerpoint?
[4:13 PM]Varda: You may need your own website for geology and snow sports. : )
[4:14 PM]Varda: Gaming:
[4:14 PM]Sandalf13: I do not have a website, other than my site for Earthsource Consulting, Inc. Here is the site:
[4:14 PM]Sandalf13: Environmental Consulting | Lincoln, NE - Earthsource Consulting Inc. Allow me to assess the ecological impact of your project with environmental consulting in Lincoln, NE. I offer extensive services to multiple industries.

[4:23 PM]Varda: Lord of the Rings Online:
[4:23 PM]Varda: Through March 14 Code: BONUSXP
[4:23 PM]Varda: Lord of the Rings Online kin active this past week:
[4:23 PM]Varda: Very good to see Morwe online, as his health has been iffy.
[4:24 PM]Varda: Also to see Meriadoc who barely has two minutes to rub together. : )
[4:26 PM]Varda: Sandalf, yes, I'd be interested in seeing your Powerpoint.
[4:26 PM]Varda: Also, Eonwe had a good url for "density". : )
[4:27 PM]Varda: Feel free to post here!
[4:28 PM]Varda: drags Sandalf to LotRO j/k
[4:28 PM]Eönwë Valar: You want to discuss Density? OK.
[4:28 PM]Eönwë Valar: YouTube Russell Cheney: Back to the Future I'm Your Density
[4:28 PM]Sandalf13: Mental or physical?
[4:28 PM]Varda: heh, and I was thinking it might be interesting in Tolkien too. : )
[4:29 PM]Varda: That! Thanks, Eonwe. : )
[4:29 PM]Varda: On to
[4:29 PM]Varda: Tolkien!
[4:29 PM]Eönwë Valar: bow
[4:29 PM]Sandalf13: Take a double bow, for that...
[4:30 PM]Varda: We hear people comment on how dense the Silmarillion is, or what a doorstop-sized set of books he wrote.
[4:30 PM]Varda: And yet, a common complaint is that the LotR is too short. : )
[4:31 PM]Varda: The Hobbit has spots in it that really begged for more info, so I sympathize with Peter Jackson for wanting to hit those things that were going on in the "background" such as what Gandalf and the Council were doing.
[4:31 PM]Varda: The Sil is packed, extremely dense, loaded with masses of info in a short area.
[4:32 PM]Varda: The history of creation and on to the time of our heroes.
[4:32 PM]Sandalf13: Not to mention the use of extremely archaic language in places, that makes for heavy reading.
[4:32 PM]Varda: Some call the Sil the history of Aragorn's ancestors too.
[4:33 PM]Varda: For those of us that enjoyed Shakespeare or are used to the KJB (King James Bible), it was pleasing. And it was much easier reading than the very old English he was reading a lot of background material from.
[4:33 PM]Eönwë Valar: Even Tolkien thought LotR was too short as I recall :} Wished he'd written more to it :}
[4:33 PM]Sandalf13: Yup.
[4:33 PM]Varda: Aye, JRRT agreed with that complaint. : )
[4:34 PM]Varda: Still, to have made all that while going through paper shortages was pretty astounding.
[4:34 PM]Varda: Notes and passages on the back of an envelope.
[4:34 PM]Varda: Poor Christopher, trying to read that, plus that handwriting, heh.
[4:34 PM]Sandalf13: Or wrapping paper from the store...
[4:34 PM]Varda: Aye
[4:35 PM]Varda: Whatever could be found
[4:35 PM]Eönwë Valar: To put it one way, I thought LotR completed the assignment, but I wouldn't have minded Tolkien going for extra credit :}
[4:35 PM]Varda: And JRRT was a two-fingered typist. The sheer effort!
[4:35 PM]Varda: Agreed, Eonwe!
[4:35 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya all!
[4:36 PM]Varda: His "secret vice" was his writing those stories, instead of something "scholarly".
[4:36 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: You're early for me
[4:36 PM]Varda: Phar! Aye, good ol' time change hit. : )
[4:36 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Not for a week or two for me, I think.
[4:36 PM]Sandalf13: If I was the teacher, I would have put him in detenetion, and told him "You don't get out until you put out more!"
[4:36 PM]Varda: hehe Sandalf
[4:36 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Maybe even 3.
[4:36 PM]Eönwë Valar: Passes a cup of Shire-brand coffee to Phar. That should help with the early :} (edited)
[4:36 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: If you don't mind the late member news, I managed to talk to Fladrif this week, as I was in WoW and bhe in Hearthstone
[4:37 PM]Sandalf13: Is there a mention of coffee anywhere in the LoTR? I think not...
[4:37 PM]Varda: hmm. Coffee. Was that ever mentioned? Ol' tea-drinker
[4:37 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: *he
[4:37 PM]Varda: O good! Fladrif doing ok?
[4:37 PM]Eönwë Valar: Hmm, let me check my notes and see if I've seen it mentioned.
[4:37 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Seems to, yes, but a mutual friend of us recently died, so that was one reason for us to contact.
[4:37 PM]Varda: We need him to check out the stage flooring.
[4:38 PM]Varda: Oh. Rough. The only good thing is how that can bring folks together again. 4:38 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: But we did catch up a bit. He's living in Germany right now, and still playing Hearthstone at least! I'll try to see if I can get him back into Discord
[4:38 PM]Varda: Germany! That should tickle Sandalf.
[4:38 PM]Eönwë Valar: No coffee mentioned in my notes.
[4:38 PM]Varda: I remember no coffee.
[4:38 PM]Sandalf13: Tell him there are some German speakers who would love to chat (in chat) in German...
[4:39 PM]Eönwë Valar: My condolences to you and Fladrif, Phar.
[4:39 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: As for the topic, I know I've always wanted to see the Silmarillion in LotR-detail, even if it took up 3 shelves in my room.
[4:39 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Thank you!
[4:39 PM]Varda: We do try to use English or sometimes Tolkien languages here, so all can understand. But side chat, have a blast!
[4:40 PM]Varda: Christopher made a stab at it! Several of the stories, such as Children of Hurin.
[4:40 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And I do remember the Book of Lost Tales being a version of that, for at least some of the stories. There's also some versions in the Unfinished Tales and a few of the poems.
[4:40 PM]Sandalf13: Yes. I should have said "side chat" instead of "in chat." My mistake.
[4:40 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And yes, those
[4:40 PM]Varda: But would love to have seen more. : )
[4:41 PM]Varda: We'll have to time travel and take JRRT tons of paper. : )
[4:41 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: In fact I think the reason the Silmarillion is so compact is that it started out as a timeline for stories already written, with plenty of room for other stories taking place during the timeline, and he slowly expanded from there. Just never really got to the detail he, or we, wanted him to get.
[4:41 PM]Varda: The Sil amounted to a batch of notes, aye.
[4:42 PM]Varda: It was not an actual book, as such.
[4:42 PM]Varda: So much hinted at!
[4:42 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: As for The Hobbit.. well, twas a children's book, after all, with only hints at the greater world as connections, as intended.
[4:42 PM]Varda: Aye. Who would have expected a giant children's book to take off like that?
[4:42 PM]Sandalf13: Yet Christopher Tolkien did a fantastic job in piecing it together into readable form...I sometimes think that he did not get enough credit for his work in preparing the Sil for publication.
[4:43 PM]Varda: Aye. Christopher was a giant. JRRT worried that Christopher's writing was put on hold working with JRRT's. I wonder what he would have written freely of his own.
[4:44 PM]Sandalf13: I suspect that just like his father, and many of his fellow WWII Vets, his experiences in the war would have colored his writing significantly. How could they not?
[4:45 PM]Varda: It was a form of therapy for many fighters.
[4:45 PM]Varda: It was said to be so for JRRT.
[4:45 PM]Varda: So, yes. : )
[4:45 PM]Sandalf13: All true.
[4:46 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I don't know if Christopher has written anything truly of his own creation, but I can imagine that he'd have been better at combining lore/texts and writing it down in a consistent manner than he was at creating a world of his own. I can sympathize at least Ar-Pharazon-V: A talent often underappreciated, but it can be so very useful!
[4:46 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: A bit like people summarizing WoW lore on youtube, I might add
[4:48 PM]Varda: Others of the Tolkien kids wrote books, carefully keeping away from fantasy that would inevitably be compared to JRRT's.
[4:48 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Wise
[4:48 PM]Varda: It could be that working with his dad's works helped Christopher in a similar manner as it helped his father. And it took creativity.
[4:50 PM]Sandalf13: Tell me about it. My father had always hoped that both he and I could prepare a 9th edition of his book on retirement. I am trying to do so now, but the publisher wants significant changes in the style and content of a 9th edition. I am not sure I can deliver same.
[4:51 PM]Sandalf13: But I a still trying.
[4:53 PM]Varda: And is the publisher right? If he is, then it's very much worth the awesome effort.
[4:53 PM]Varda: You did well with your other self-published. : )
[4:55 PM]Sandalf13: Thank you. It is taking a lot of effort to re-write the book to the publisher's standards. I took all the courses required to become a certified financial planner back in 2017 - 2018. I never intend to become a CFP, as one needs to work in the business for three years in order to sit for the exam, but I did gain the knowledge to work on my Father's book. "Dammit it, Varda, I am a geologist! Not an economist!" he he.
[4:55 PM]Sandalf13: (to paraphrase Dr. McCoy)
[4:56 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: A lot of finances involved, then?
[4:57 PM]Sandalf13: Yes. Knowledge of insurance, investments, retirement planning, budgeting, death, timing...all of that good stuff.
[4:57 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Oof.
[4:57 PM]Varda: My sympathy.
[4:58 PM]Varda: And we expect JRRT to know absolutely everything about every -ology and get it all right in his books!
[4:59 PM]Varda: Tough being a world-builder.
[4:59 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: haha, including geology apparently
[4:59 PM]Sandalf13: Dr. McCoy "I'm a doctor"
[4:59 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: "Morgoth raised this fortress!" "That doesn't work geologically!"
[5:00 PM]Eönwë Valar: Ok. "Morgoth took his plastic sand castle bucket, filled it with dirt, and set it down. Now he has a fortress." Any better? :}
[5:00 PM]Varda: JRRT was always getting letters asking for more info on all the -ologies. Weather, flora, fauna, cosmology, geology, you name it.
[5:00 PM]Varda: hehehe Eonwe
[5:00 PM]Sandalf13: He would have to add some silica cement...
[5:01 PM]Varda: A bit of grass maybe? : )
[5:01 PM]Varda: And we have reached the hour. Unreal, huh?
[5:01 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: On my clock we've reached a minute!
[5:01 PM]Sandalf13: Morgoth's Multi-commodity Mining MAterials, Inc.
[5:01 PM]Varda: gavel looks around, surprised. Eyes clock confusedly
[5:02 PM]Varda: hammerpad laughs and bops it
[5:02 PM]Eönwë Valar: Unreal would be if we multiplied it by the square root of -1.
[5:02 PM]Varda: bop!
[5:02 PM]Varda: After-meeting!
[5:02 PM]Eönwë Valar: Bad math humor
[5:02 PM]Varda: hehehe
[5:02 PM]Sandalf13: How can I prove that you have eleven fingers?
[5:02 PM]Varda: Counting in which base?
[5:02 PM]Sandalf13: Count from ten to six on the left hand, and one to five on the right hand. 6 + 5 = 11, last time I checked.
[5:03 PM]Varda: hehe
[5:03 PM]Eönwë Valar: I know I've got something for that. One second while I dig into my brain...
[5:03 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The logic of that is so out there I can't even put in words why it's wrong.
[5:04 PM]Varda: Just keep counting across and it works.
[5:04 PM]Eönwë Valar: Here we go: Abbott & Costello 7 x 13 = 28 | Colorized YouTube
[5:04 PM]Varda: Still 10.
[5:04 PM]Sandalf13: That is what makes it funny...my 9th grade algebra teacher, Mrs. Gersten, did give me a plus credit for math humor back in 1964 with that joke.
[5:04 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: It's like saying 3+3=17 because potatoes.
[5:04 PM]Varda: Cool!
[5:05 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Anyway, I'll go make a very late dinner
[5:05 PM]Varda: I have to show this to Fangorn.
[5:05 PM]Sandalf13: What are you making?
[5:06 PM]Arien Valar: Aiya
[5:06 PM]Sandalf13: Aiya Arien! Good to see you!
[5:06 PM]Arien Valar: you are finished already?
[5:06 PM]Varda: Aiya ☼ !
[5:07 PM]Eönwë Valar: Enjoy, Phar.
[5:07 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Actually, while stuff is cooking, I'll just say that if you do keep counting across you'll go from 10 to 1 and that's still 11.
[5:07 PM]Arien Valar: enjoy Phari
[5:07 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya Arien!
[5:07 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Thanks
[5:07 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie, Ar!
[5:08 PM]Sandalf13: Bis spaeter!
[5:08 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hey, I'll be back in like 10 minutes
[5:09 PM]Varda: Counting on Sandalf's fingers?
[5:10 PM]Eönwë Valar: I'll make it easier for you to get to 11: Vanessa Spencer: Princess Bride six fingers YouTube
[5:10 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Baker's decimal?
[5:11 PM]Eönwë Valar: Heh Phar.
[5:12 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I'll link this one then Spinal Tap "These go to eleven..."
[5:16 PM]Arien Valar: Daylight saving already :O?
[5:16 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: on the other side of the pond, apparently!
[5:17 PM]Sandalf13: And I go to 7-11 for a pop, before I head to Costco for a tasty dinner. Namarie until later, my friends!!
[5:17 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
[5:17 PM]Sandalf13: And 11 is the 5th prime number....just think about that! he he
[5:18 PM]Sandalf13: And 11 plus 5 is 16, which is the first perfect square.
[5:18 PM]Sandalf13: Wow, I need to retake calculus.
[5:22 PM]Eönwë Valar: And 16 + 11 = 27, which is divisible by 3, which is the second prime number, which means that 2 > 27.
[5:23 PM]Eönwë Valar: Anyway, bad math humor aside, my time to go has come.
[5:24 PM]Varda: Tricky. : )
[5:25 PM]Varda: Have a great rest of the day!
[5:25 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie
[5:25 PM]Arien Valar: Namarie! Enjoy the rest of your day
[5:25 PM]Varda: We would be happy to abolish Daylight Savings Time.
[5:25 PM]Eönwë Valar: Take care all, good night, sleep well, and enjoy the story. Hope to cross paths with you over the next few months.
[5:26 PM]Varda: This talk of making it permanent was proven a mistake last time it was tried. Regular time is where we need to go permanently.
[5:26 PM]Varda: Cross with us here on Discord when you can!
[5:26 PM]Eönwë Valar: But but, mah candles! :}
[5:26 PM]Eönwë Valar: Sorry, had to get one last line in :}
[5:26 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, it gives some variation to our lives But yeah, if we're gonna end DST, don't do it on the wrong time.
[5:26 PM]Varda: lights giant candle
[5:26 PM]Arien Valar: I take no candle!
[5:27 PM]Eönwë Valar: Ok, off I go :} Have fun :}
[5:27 PM]Varda: You're already lit up.
[5:27 PM]Varda: Namarie!
[5:27 PM]Arien Valar: Namarie :
[5:27 PM]Varda: ☼ is Alt + 15
[5:28 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: ►☼◄
[5:28 PM]Varda: Nice : )
[5:29 PM]Varda: Figured Arien might want that one. : )
[5:30 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: <(o.o)> Kirby for Eonwe!
[5:30 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: ...Actually I think I got that wrong but I don't remember how to do it.
[5:33 PM]Varda: hehe
[5:36 PM]Varda: Wings, big eyes.
[5:37 PM]Varda: Beak.
[5:37 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Arms and a small mouth, it's Kirby, not an owl
[5:37 PM]Varda: ok, not wings, but stubby arms
[5:37 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Right!
[5:38 PM]Varda: Little mouth
[5:38 PM]Varda: That should work!
[5:38 PM]Varda: ♥
[5:39 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: ▲▼
[5:39 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: ah, there's the other 2
[5:49 PM]Arien Valar: \ovo/ @Ar-Pharazon-V Arms and a small mouth, it's Kirby, not an owl
[5:53 PM]Ungwetari: I almost thought we were talking about T-Rex. But T-Rex is not as all-devouring as Kirby is.
[5:55 PM]Arien Valar: aiya spidy
[5:55 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya!
[5:56 PM]Arien Valar: and Namarie I ve had a long day
[5:57 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
[6:09 PM]Varda: Namarie
[6:09 PM]Varda: Aiya Shelob : )
[6:09 PM]Varda: afk
[8:25 PM]Sandalf13: Aiya!
[9:26 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Personal gaming report!
[9:26 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For (non)flashgaming, we move into the 2-dimensional realm through String Theory 2 on Kongregate. "In search of her lost colleagues, Eva enters the second dimension. Will you help her find her way through this weird dimension, and get everyone back to the Up...""
[9:27 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: You play a scientist transported into the platforming world of strings and wormholes, where you move around by manipulating springs and using physics and momentum to get yourself around.
[9:27 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The goal is to find 2 other scientists who were also lost in this world back in the first game, and make it out with all 3 characters
[9:28 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Infinite retries when you fail, no timer, and relaxing music... puzzle and time your way through each level!
[9:29 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard gaming:
[9:32 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Diablo 4: My lightning sorceress Calectronica is continuing her seasonal journey, completing quest 3 and moving into quest 4. She's acquired the gatehall, an interesting new hub with a waypoint and various inactive portals, and in the chase of a demon, she's now searching for the first connected vault.
[9:33 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Level 19 has been reached, and the class quest to unlock enchantments is done as well. It also makes some references to the storyline of the current season, while having been in the game from the start... that makes me think this season truly was meant for the sorcerer class
[9:34 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: The first free reward on the season track has been gotten as well, a shirt for all classes.
[9:36 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone: Level 153 on the reward track now, with enough gold got to buy another class skin. I went for Sabertender Illidan for the Demon Hunter, with lots of saber whelps.
[9:37 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Working on the anniversary quest event as well, and with 8 days to go and only 2 more quests to complete, it should be no problem
[9:37 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I've gotten all the card rewards already, last bit is the anniversary coin.
[9:38 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Brawl is Party Portals! Both players play Medivh the mage with a bunch of random portals in the deck, summoning random minions all over the place.
[9:38 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Much randomness, but the special minions and different portal effects make it quite fun
[9:39 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Rumble: No new collection level, but did get army upgrade levels.
[9:40 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: In last week's undead dungeon, I finally got Rivendare past level 15, and in the current beast week, I've gotten levels 12 and 13 for Hogger.
[9:41 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: In the sigil campaign, I completed the plaguelands, by defeating Tirion Fordring, the abomination Ramstein the Gorger, and the enemy version of Rivendare.
[9:42 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: That puts me at 70 sigils, and only one more zone to go to complete the normal campaign. Blackrock Mountain here I come!
[9:42 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: That said, that zone seems a bit beyond my levels yet, so we'll see how long it takes
[9:43 PM]Varda: We'll give you a minute or two.
[9:43 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: hehe
[9:45 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: As for quality upgrades for my minis, I've gotten the Dark Iron Miner straight to rare quality, and the Warsong Grunts to uncommon. I've also gotten the wanted talents for both of them, and am now saving for my next uncommon leader upgrade. I can still buy an extra talent for the Miner, though, but at this time it doesn't really matter which one I buy since I've already got the one I want.
[9:46 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:
[9:49 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Raiding is continuing, with a bunch of bosses including the last few done in one night, but we're kinda running out of stuff to get from there. Though at least 2 of our players still want the legendary axe from the last boss, and they're probably not far from getting it, I'm sure we'll all welcome the upcoming patch and next season. But since those are tougher versions of the raids we've already beaten, I'm not sure what our plans are, as all we can really get from it now are a few gear upgrades.
[9:50 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I did get enough aspect's crests to upgrade my chestpiece to the maximum, unlocking the mythic color scheme. At least that's something to work towards for the rest of the set
[9:52 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Weekly quest is world quests, so pretty relaxed week overall. Which gave me more time to work on Diablo 4; no alting done in WoW. Probably next week!
[9:52 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's my report for the week!
