[4:42 PM]Arien Valar: oh i like this clamavis de Profundis version .. excellent

[4:43 PM]Eonwë Valar: Makes me open it in a new window.
[4:43 PM]Sandalf13: The same thing happened to me...
[4:43 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, all your links open a new tab for me.
[4:45 PM]Varda: Anyway, we do seem to agree that JRRT's work needs respected, and the fun things must be in love like that. : )
[4:45 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I could like a Disney version of Tolkien just for that reason. Made out of love, and a bit of humor.
[4:45 PM]Varda: Not "corrected" for a select groups' current beliefs.
[4:45 PM]Varda: Aye, Phar.
[4:46 PM]Varda: annnd I'm straying a bit. Pardon, please.
[4:46 PM]Varda: So, if Disney did it right, we could stand a gently humorous piece of Tolkien. : )
[4:47 PM]Sandalf13: I would love to see a Disney version of The Children of Hurin. Now that would be a challenge...heh heh
[4:47 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There were some darker disney movies, though less known... Black Cauldron comes to mind.
[4:48 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: It's no Narn, but still 😄
[4:49 PM]Sandalf13: Yes...but Lloyd Alexander gave the whole series of books a very happy ending, even it it was a bit bittersweet...but Alexander's work is a joytrip relative The Children of Hurin.
[4:49 PM]Arien Valar: i could imagine a Disney version of something like The Adventures of Tom Bombadil .. or a compilation of Tolkien songs in a Disney make up
[4:49 PM]Sandalf13: I could see Disney doing a take on Estel growing up in Imladris.
[4:49 PM]Arien Valar: but not the Hobbit or LotR or the Silmarillion
[4:50 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: (there, all new stuff bought, 840 Love Tokens worth, over 5 characters)
[4:50 PM]Eonwë Valar: Night on Bald Mountain from Fantasia?
[4:51 PM]Varda: Grats, Phar : )
[4:51 PM]Varda: 5 characters, that was work.
[4:51 PM]Sandalf13: That is a great piece, Eonwe!
[4:51 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Can't really get all 840 on one.
[4:51 PM]Sandalf13: Another good one might be Danse Macabre, by Saint-Saens.
[4:51 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And yeah, that was pretty dark for Disney 😄
[4:54 PM]Eonwë Valar: On the Tolkien topic, Boromir knew what he was doing was wrong, trying to take the Ring from Frodo, but he justified it to himself. Ends justifies the means and all that.
[4:55 PM]Varda: Thingol knew he was giving Beren a task that was a death sentence.
[4:55 PM]Sandalf13: Self-rationalization is indeed a deeply embedded thought pattern in humans of all stripes...
[4:55 PM]Varda: Boromir saving his city. Thingol saving his daughter.
[4:56 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Everyone else just thinks they're right, I know it...
[4:56 PM]Sandalf13: You are all wrong...I am the only one who is right...he he.
[4:56 PM]Eonwë Valar: Can't tell me Celegorm and Curufin didn't know taking Luthien as hostage was wrong.
[4:56 PM]Varda: Justifying, needing to do that when one knows one is crossing the line.
[4:58 PM]Eonwë Valar: Celegorm and Curufin brought down Nargothrond from the inside by their incessant meddling. They should've gone to one of their brothers' strongholds.
[4:59 PM]Sandalf13: I think that Maglor and Maedhros sort of knew what idiots those two really were...
[5:00 PM]Sandalf13: They were all stuck with the Oath of Feanor, but I do not think that that necessarily blinded them to the wekanesses in themselves and their brothers...
[5:00 PM]Eonwë Valar: And would've had a better chance of keeping them in check without alienating their followers.
[5:00 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Speaking of, the last two Kinslayings must have fallen under this topic. The sons of Feanor were oathbound to go for the Silmarils, but at least some of them certainly did not take pleasure in what they did.
[5:01 PM]Eonwë Valar: Sometimes a brother can say and do things someone else can't.
[5:02 PM]Eonwë Valar: Aye, Phar.
[5:03 PM]Sandalf13: I often wonder how any of us would have responded, if our father, like Feanor, demanded we take an oath to something that was no less than perilous bordering on plain evil. Would we reject our parent's entreaty? Would we have the inner strength to do what we knew/thought to be right?
[5:03 PM]Sandalf13: I personally hold more sympathy for the Sons of Feanor than Feanor himself...
[5:04 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: An oath like that I probably wouldn't take too seriously if the time came to keep or break it. But then I don't believe in an Eru they swore the oath to. I think they were more afraid of what breaking would mean.
[5:04 PM]Varda: Same here, Sandalf.
[5:04 PM]Varda: He was not just father, but king. That gets trickier.
[5:04 PM]Eonwë Valar: I would tend to agree, Sandalf.
[5:04 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Yes. But he was also dead 😛
[5:05 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: There was nobody to hold them to it.
[5:05 PM]Varda: Oath already given during life.
[5:05 PM]Varda: They swore on the Powers.
[5:05 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Yes, that's the problem, isn't it?
[5:05 PM]Sandalf13: There is that neat discussion between Maedhros and Maglor just before the third kinslaying...in which they debate whether to fulfill the oath or not....
[5:05 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Even though the Powers would've been more than happy if they broke it.
[5:06 PM]Eonwë Valar: Setting aside who the oath was sworn to, the fact is that keeping one's word tends to be an important part of older cultures. If you're known to go back on your word, how can you be trusted?
[5:07 PM]Sandalf13: I have always wished that Maedhros would have taken Maglor's advice, who said, in essence, that breaking the oath would be bad, but it would less bad than fulfilling it...
[5:07 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: When the whole world knows your oath is one of evil, I think they can forgive you going back on your word.
[5:07 PM]Varda: He may have felt the same. I wish I had...
[5:08 PM]Arien Valar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TruPe0V2p7Q
[5:08 PM]Varda: Interesting, curse of Feanor instead of oath.
[5:08 PM]Eonwë Valar: If they think you're that far gone, your choices are to be a horrible person, but an honest one, or to be a horrible person and a liar.
[5:09 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And yet, going back on that oath could be interpreted as an act of growth and redemption.
[5:10 PM]Eonwë Valar: But I still think Maedhros and Maglor had a brief moment where they could've declared their oath fulfilled, when Eonwë told everyone to stand down and let them go with the Silmarils. The words of the oath were that "No Vala, Demon, Elf, or Man should keep the Silmarils from them." At that moment, no one at all was stopping them.
[5:10 PM]Sandalf13: Exactly. I wonder how things would have turned out if Maglor and Maedhros desisted from seizing the Silmarils at the end...
[5:10 PM]Varda: Agreed, Eonwe. That "second chance" always is offered.
[5:10 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: ...Sounds to me like they could've given the Silmarils to the Dwarves and be done with the oath 😄
[5:11 PM]Varda: Finrod tried to get out of the oath but was still partly ensnared.
[5:11 PM]Eonwë Valar: Well it goes on to say "no creature, great or small" So the idea was no one should keep them from it.
[5:12 PM]Sandalf13: I believe that all the Elves who left Valinor to follow Feanor somehow, to a greater or lesser degree, were ensanred in the Oath.
[5:12 PM]Eonwë Valar: They were. They fell under the Doom of Mandos.
[5:12 PM]Varda: We have reached the hour.
[5:12 PM]Sandalf13: Happy Hour?
[5:12 PM]Sandalf13: Goody.
[5:12 PM]Varda: gavels dance, hopping over the hammerpad

[5:13 PM]Varda: After-meeting!
[5:13 PM]Varda: Free chat, the Sun may feel free to fly.
[5:13 PM]Eonwë Valar: But had Agent Smith realized that putting his hand into Neo was a bad idea... I mean if Maedhros had realized at that moment that Eonwë held everyone back that he could use that to free himself of the Oath, he would've done it.
[5:14 PM]Arien Valar: well yeah i ve got to work tomorrow :?
[5:14 PM]Varda: Fly! Fly!
[5:14 PM]Arien Valar: was nice to have the weekend off
[5:14 PM]Sandalf13: Enjoy work! Tomorrow is a partial holiday here in the States...
[5:14 PM]Varda: Congrats on that. : )
[5:14 PM]Arien Valar: 🙂
[5:14 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie, Arien!
[5:14 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: You mean if after having been given the go from Eonwe, they would choose to relinquish the gems themselves?
[5:14 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie Arien!
[5:14 PM]Arien Valar: Namarie !
[5:15 PM]Varda: They could no longer hold the gems without pain.
[5:15 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Well yes, but I mean willingly, and still hold their oaths fulfilled.
[5:15 PM]Varda: It was a sign to them. After all, gloves exist.
[5:16 PM]Varda: Aye, they could have willingly at that ime.
[5:16 PM]Eonwë Valar: At that moment no one was stopping them from keeping the Silmaril. They could've latched onto that to declare the oath fulfilled. What they did from there, either destroying or surrendering, was up to them.
[5:17 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Seemed to me to be an oath of an indefinite duration, though. As in, if they'd given them up to the Valar at that point, they would still be oathbound to retrieve them again.
[5:18 PM]Varda: If the oath was fulfilled, then they were free of it.
[5:18 PM]Sandalf13: Oaths are not to be taken lightly, and as a result, manhy religious traditions offer their adherents a way to turn aside from an just or unjust oath...
[5:19 PM]Varda: And "swear not" was for a reason.
[5:20 PM]Eonwë Valar: "Pursue with vengeance and hatred to the ends of the World Vala, Demon, Elf, or Man as yet unborn, or any creature, great or small, good or evil, that time should bring forth unto the end of days, whoso should hold or take or keep a Silmaril from their possession."
[5:20 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: If Eonwe's quote of the wording of the oath is correct - I'm sure my Sil is here somewhere - that would imply that their oath would remain fulfilled if they gave them up to the Valar, under the condition that if they ever wanted them again, the Valar wouldn't stop them... which would be agreeable on the condition that they'd never try 😄
[5:20 PM]Eonwë Valar: I got it from the SIl directly, so I hope it's correct :}
[5:20 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Ah, and the bigger quote seems to prove my point even better 🙂
[5:21 PM]Eonwë Valar: And aye, that is contingent upon them washing their hands of the silmarilli altogether.
[5:24 PM]Sandalf13: Namarie all...i have some work to get finished before I go to a chamber music concert this evening...will check back in later for Ar's report, as always. I swear it! ((he he)
[5:24 PM]Varda: Sounds like a fun thing to do, the chamber music!
[5:24 PM]Eonwë Valar: But it's the one shot they have of satisfying their honor of fulfilling the oath and of not fighting a hopeless cause.
[5:24 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie, and enjoy!
[5:24 PM]Varda: Four instruments, I assume?
[5:24 PM]Varda: Namarie
[5:25 PM]Sandalf13: Yes. Four as in 4. Two violins, a viola, and a 'cello.
[5:25 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Voila, a viola!
[5:25 PM]Varda: : )
[5:25 PM]Sandalf13: 🙂 Bis spaeter!
[5:26 PM]Eonwë Valar: And again, they could cast the two that had into the earth, say "There, we've put them somewhere safe." And move on. And if dear old dad doesn't like it, he can come out of Mandos and dig them up himself.
[5:27 PM]Varda: hehe
[5:27 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, there's a point. Maglor at least could've returned after dumping his gem into the sea.
[5:27 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Maedhros... not so lucky.
[5:29 PM]Eonwë Valar: I think Fëanor was spiteful enough at that point to think dumping them into a pit of lava was a good enough idea for the time. Really spiteful would be to unlock them and dump their contents on the ground, but I don't think he was quite that far.
[5:29 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: "There, it's in the ocean, out of the reach of any Valar who might keep it from us! Oath fulfilled" Ulmo shows up with Silmaril "Did you lose this?"
[5:29 PM]Eonwë Valar: hehe
[5:29 PM]Varda: haha
[5:30 PM]Eonwë Valar: Anyway, I need to get moving. Take care all, good night, sleep well, have fun, and enjoy the story.
[5:30 PM]Varda: Namarie! : )
[5:30 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
[5:32 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I'm now reminded of a scene from Moana where the water throws the gem back...
[5:33 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkx1axv9WbE&t=145s speaking of Disney, eh?

[11:30 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Rumble: Collection level up to 27. Getting more minis closer to level 13, so that helps.
[11:30 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: More sigil campaign progress, completing the first 4 fights in Winterspring. Fifth one is a bit tougher.
[11:31 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Horde week in the dungeon now, but no new levels beaten yet. Had a few close calls, tough.
[11:32 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Got one more card upgraded to common, the Cheat Death spell, as well as the right talent. Currently saving up for an uncommon upgrade for one of the leaders.
[11:32 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:
[11:34 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Raiding: Still doing that, we're switching bosses up a bit, through the shortcuts and the wing choices. Got myself a new leatherworking pattern from there, the Wind Spirit's Lasso.
[11:35 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Weekly quest is mythic dungeons, and from one of those I got yet another pattern, the Venom-Steeped Stompers 🙂
[11:35 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Unfortunately, the weekly reward was something I already had.
[11:35 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Finally got 10000 world quests done, the final achievement for that 🙂
[11:38 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And got the trading post done for this month, including the achievement and reward for 12 months of trading post! So that's one Valentine's set from the monthly reward, and one warden-like set from the achievement; a set that switches between green and white for day and night, though you can mog into permanent versions of each color as well. I did the latter for my huntress, with picture and link in the screenshots channel 🙂 And yes, armory should be up to date now!
[11:39 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Got a bunch more items from the trading post, since it came with extra currency this month, but also extra cheap items.
[11:40 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Bought the X-53 Touring Rocket (old recruit-a-friend reward), a Mannequin Charm, a Lovely Gothic Longbow for my void elf, 3 pets (Buggsy and Nelle, 2 ladybugs, and Drazka'zet the Wrathful, a small mummy pet I'd frozen some time ago), and a rosy tabard, which seemed nice for some characters.
[11:42 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: For the Love is in the Air event, mentioned earlier, I got the achievement for donating 50000 gold - basically bankrupting 3 of my characters, but I'm sure they'll gather up money again - and got enough tokens to buy all the new things.
[11:42 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Completed the new questline as well with 2 characters, in order to get enough tokens.
[11:44 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Things bought: the Heartseeker Mana Ray mount, the Heartseeker Moth pet, 3 toys: Exquisite Love Boat, Date Simulation Modulator (interesting weather/time of day effects) and Eyes For You Only. And I also got the 6 transmog roses, one of which seemed to suit my mage, https://worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com/en-gb/character/eu/argent-dawn/caldaera
[11:45 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Alas, there was one new item I didn't get: 5 apothecary bossfight kills a day was not enough to get the new dragonriding drake armor to drop. Maybe next year!
[11:47 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: I did get a bunch of experience for the 4 alts I'd been doing that with, though. And this week that meant getting the mage Caldaera to level 64, and the paladin Alcaria to level 62. Since she hit level 61 last week in the same way, it seems you get just over a level from 2 weeks of that + the new event questline.
[11:48 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And finally more alting, as the mage continued a bit in Revendreth, doing a few quests there for the mirror master, freeing some Venthyr from light traps. Next week, let's try to build a mirror to escape!
[11:48 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's my report for the week 🙂
[11:48 PM]Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
Thus ends the Fifth Battle... er, this ends this week's meeting. Come back and see us next week!
