Meeting begins
Membership news:

World of Warcraft, Diablo 4, Diablo
Immortal, Heroes of the Storm, Warcraft

Tolkien:
Topic:
What is meant by the seven stars in the quote that the Numenoreans
brought "seven stars, seven stones, and one white tree"?
After-meeting:
More Tolkien chat
(non) Flashgaming Reviews (plus) by
Ar-Pharazon. Includes Blizzard games afterwards.
[Note: No report at this time. Phar was disconnected and did not
return to the meeting. We think his connection was probably hit
by a power outage from weather around storm Babet. Arien has
since heard that he's ok, but the roads were being worked on
which took out his internet.]

Eonwë Valar — 10/24/2023 1:52 AM
Bah, got the hallow's end drake armor from the Headless Horeseman,
and realized it belongs to the upgliest dragonriding dragon. Guess
that's why they gave the armor to it. (edited)

Eonwë Valar — 10/24/2023 5:01 AM
Excuse me, second ugliest, of four mounts.
[5:03 AM]
So I have a Pirate's day saddle on one mount, Brewfest on
another, now the Hallow's End, and on the ugliest of the four I'll
be getting the Day of the Dead saddle.
So everyone got their own I guess.
Pengolodh — 10/24/2023 4:42 PM
Getting close!!
October 26, 2023
Pengolodh — 10/26/2023 4:20 AM
Well its seems, the console version of LOTRO is dead in the water
due to cost.
[4:20 AM]
Not that this was ever an option. Hopefully it dulls the world chats
debates over it
Pengolodh — 10/26/2023 7:00 AM

the new Star Citizen demo footage is just insane. No loading

Eonwë Valar — 10/28/2023 7:07 AM
Something happened to catch my attention on a skimming of LotR. Who
said the following, Gimli or Galadriel: "Dark is the water of
Kheled-zaram, and cold are the springs of Kibil-nala." Answer:
Trick question. They both did :} No doubt
helped Gimli's good opinion of Galadriel, to hear these things
described as he himself would describe them. (run your left
mouse button held down over the invisible area for the answer)

[4:03 PM]
i sent him an email and messaged everywhere i could
Varda — Yesterday at 4:03 PM
Thank you, Arien. Any contact with Fladrif? He might know something?
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:03 PM
Yes: Our first snow of the season arrived yesterday and
overnight...6 inches of beautiful white snow. The sun came out
around 1300...blue sky, fresh white snow, snow-covered pine trees,
and cold air....just as I envision Dor-Lomin looked in the First
Age...what a day to go out for a run!
Varda — Yesterday at 4:03 PM
Six inches of snow... Wow!
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:03 PM
Varda — Yesterday at 4:04 PM

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:06 PM
My goal was to get it in before the first snow, and i did.
[4:07 PM]
I was a volunteer firefighter and EMT-B for over 10 years in
Nebraska.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:07 PM
Thank you for that!

Varda — Yesterday at 4:10 PM

home to comfort. ; )
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:10 PM
That is the good old Gulf Stream, for you.
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 4:12 PM
Yeah, the movie "the day after tomorrow" got me all excited that the
G stream would malfunction some day soon, so snow all year
round But it would seem the Gulf S works very well
I will never find a use for my snowboard
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:12 PM
Geologists suspect it has been operating that way for almost
100,000,000 years. I think it is good for another few.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:14 PM
Any other Membership chat?
Any Fladrif sightings?
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:15 PM
43F here, wind chill makes it feel like 23. All the rain the past
few days certainly did a number cooling everything down.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:19 PM

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:19 PM
And the answer, and a form to play with.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:53 PM
I don't know if I want it remade at this point.
Varda — Yesterday at 4:54 PM
I'd rather see new original works coming out.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:54 PM
Indeed.
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 4:55 PM
gonna happen! honest like.. after 5 films (4 of which most have
never watched).. I find it hard to believe many folk will care
enough to even want a reboot..
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:55 PM
(In response to Varda's comment) That would be the biggest issue
there. Quit mining the past's great works to mooch off their success
and start doing something original.

Lost? Are you looking for somewhere particular? using the M

Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
I try to not use the Map until im directly questing for a point on

i unforunately trusted my instinct
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:09 PM
Maps are my life. I have about 500 maps that I have collected over

once i do not trust it there even though i do in reality hehe

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:10 PM
Part of my effort to declutter.
@Arien Valar
ah well .. it is pretty shiny
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:10 PM
based on my insane elfness.. i only use the stars to navigate across
the land
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 5:10 PM
But then , my justification is that I am a woman
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
when the sun rises in middle-earth i become incredibly confused and
begin to wander in all directions
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
When I was at Naval Officer Candidate School in 1971, we had
to learn how to navigate using the stars and planets only..using a
sextant and hand calculations. That was pre-computer.
But it worked!
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
ohhhhhh!!
[5:12 PM]
I should imagine it would!
[5:13 PM]
such an art form of nagivation would only confuse folk today.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
When the electricity goes down a while, it's nice to have a
fall-back.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
I think uou are right...but it was so satisfying to stand on the
bridge wing and shoot three stars in order to get a fix on our
location....usually right after sunset or just before dawn. The
hardest part was swinging the sextant "to bring the start down to
the horizon" so as to measure its altitude.
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:16 PM
thanks my very prepped partner in rl.. we have many backups:

Varda — Yesterday at 5:19 PM
Sorry about his drowning.
[5:20 PM]
Anyway, we are past the hour, so moving to a quick bit of
top
Tolkien!
[5:20 PM]
I was looking over the books for something else
and noticed
the Palantiri seem referred to sometimes as [note: along
with, not as] the seven stars brought to Middle-earth by the
Numenoreans. The naming of them [note: the seven stars being
mentioned] may have had a reference back to the meaning of this
constellation:
[5:21 PM]
"And high in the north as a challenge to Melkor she set
the crown of seven mighty stars to swing, Valacirca, the Sickle of
the Valar and sign of doom."
The connection to those seven stars with the Numenorean seven stars
and Palantiri suddenly jumped out. [edited]
[5:21 PM]
Suppose that might be reasonable?
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:22 PM
The Palantir were made by Elves, but they made more than 7. There's
at least an 8th in Eressea.
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:23 PM
yea! there was 8 as far as i remember.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:23 PM
Yes. I believe the complete quote (from memory) is:
[5:24 PM]
What brought they over the foundering sea?
Seven Stars and seven stones and one White Treee.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:24 PM
Sandalf, that's what I was thinking of as well.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:24 PM
I always thought that the Palantiri were the seven stones...
Varda — Yesterday at 5:24 PM
Aye, you are right.
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:24 PM
they were..
Varda — Yesterday at 5:25 PM
okie dokie, corrected. : )
What were the seven stars?
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:25 PM
So were the seven stars the stars on the crest of Elendil?
[5:26 PM]
The number "seven" is of great import both biblically and in
literature...anyone know why?
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:27 PM
yeah, over the white tree, with the crown.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:27 PM
What is so special about seven?
And the Dunedain all wore a seven-rayed star on their riding
cloaks...
Varda — Yesterday at 5:28 PM
I do, but it is outside the scope of this discussion.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:29 PM
Maybe some other time.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:29 PM
Let's stick to Tolken here, especially since we're on overtime. ; )
So could the seven stars be the ones earlier mentioned?
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:30 PM
within the scope of tolkien.. there were 7 lords of the valar..
Varda — Yesterday at 5:30 PM
I said it wrong to start, but it made good chat. : )
"And high in the north as a challenge to Melkor she set
the crown of seven mighty stars to swing, Valacirca, the Sickle of
the Valar and sign of doom."
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:31 PM
wasnt it a reference to the big dipper?!
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:31 PM
Yes.
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:31 PM
maybe im getting that wrong
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:32 PM
That was Tolkien's explanation for the Big Dipper, or the Great
Bear, or the Plowshare, or whatever, within his Legendarium.
[5:34 PM]
I read a really good Fanfic once about Aragorn climbing up the
Elostirion (Elendil's Tower) in Mithlond, and he was given the
chance to see Eressea as Elendil had years ago.
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 5:36 PM
well ,k our luck that our time went forward an hour
[5:36 PM]
err back
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:36 PM
I cant say, they were like the inspiration for the set number of the
palatari, but it was a significance number passed down cultural, at
least within the numenoran people.... and to add an extra
layer to this cake! the 7th ruler of numenor was also the first ever
ruling Ruling queen..
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:37 PM
Fall back, spring forward.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:38 PM
I prefer "Fall back into a nice, soft bed." Or in older times "Fall
back into a nice big pile of hay."
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:38 PM
I myself find it hard to spring into bed.
Varda — Yesterday at 5:38 PM
the gavel cries: Hammer down!
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:38 PM
As long as you can spring into action.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:38 PM
I usually (at least I used to) spring OUT of bed.

not sure if that was intentional by tolkien, to mark the 7th ruler
as a cultural shift! the constitution of course changed by the 6th
king Tar Aldarion.. so his daughter could rule.. But there you have
it. ;D

Varda — Yesterday at 5:40 PM
I agree that the seven stones are obviously not the seven stars. : )
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:40 PM
Considering the marital problems between him and his wife, otherwise
there would've been a problem with succession.
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:41 PM
a very big problem indeed!
Varda — Yesterday at 5:41 PM
The seven stars refer to something. : )
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:42 PM
Unless we find something else to pin it on, I would be inclined to
point to the emblem of Elendil, which had 7 stars on it.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:43 PM
I agree.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:43 PM
Likely in reference to the Valacirca. They Elves didn't corner the
market on using the Valacirca as a symbol. Durin's Crown, anyone?
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:43 PM
But if so, why would the Elendil and the Dunedain so revere the
seven start?
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:44 PM
Same reason as the Elves; symbol of the fall of Morgoth, the triumph
of Good over Evil.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:44 PM
So maybe the Dwarves did too, for the same reason....they had some
fixations with "seven" as well.
[5:45 PM]
Does anyone know what has happened to Ar? Are they still out of
power in the Netherlands?
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:45 PM
Possibly because and heres a leap!! because of Elros.. and his
connection with the son of feanor... Possible this was
passed down the faithful line as an old tradition..
im leaping here lol
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:45 PM
Well, that was because there were Seven Fathers of the Dwarves.
Their connection with the Valacirca was because of the tale of
Durin's awakening.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:46 PM
That is as good an idea as any....
Varda — Yesterday at 5:46 PM
Arien has been trying to reach Ar-Pharazon, no luck yet.
Pengolodh — Yesterday at 5:46 PM
possible.. elros wanted to honor them.. in his own way. so not to be
forgotten! stories told him as a child
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:47 PM
I must run...got to get to P.F. before I get some dinner at
Costco...they close at 1800...I will check back in later to see if
maybe Ar has gone online...I hope all is well.

(Still don't know how I said seven stones when meaning seven stars.
But it set off a nice chat!)
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 7:18 PM
I agree...it was a lovely discussion. Since there are no real
references as to exactly what the seven stars are, I will stick with
my first guess that they are the seven starts on the insignia of
Elendil. Sure...the Dunedeain (and the Numenoreans, at least before
they began to fall) all respected the seven stars that Varda placed
in the heavens...'
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 9:01 PM
Thinking about Fëanor's seven sons, I suddenly wondered if I
recalled any passages in HoME that mentioned Fëanor having any
daughters.... and immediately felt a great deal of pity for the
young suitor seeking that particular hand in marriage.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 9:18 PM
Here's another of those "of course they did" moments related to my
similar topic several weeks ago. Concerning the Palantiri:
"Doubtless they were used in the consultations between Arnor and
Gondor in the year 1944 concerning the succession to the Crown. The
'messages' received in Gondor in 1973, telling of the dire straits
of the Northern Kingdom, was possibly their last use until the
approach of the War of the Ring." Note 1, The Palantiri, Unfinished
