"Loa" by some Eonwe-(Valar).
[4:07 PM]
https://valarguild.org/tolkien/encyc/fiction/authors/Eonwe/stories/Loa.htm

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:07 PM
By some of them, but not by all Eonwe-(Valar)

Varda — Yesterday at 4:07 PM
Intended for Father's Day, so we should bring it up again then. ; )
[4:08 PM]
The one we have right here in the channel!

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:08 PM
:}

Varda — Yesterday at 4:09 PM
Now everyone's gone to read the story, we can sneak in gaming news!
Feel free to comment anytime on the story or on gaming. Nice thing about typing is we can still figure out what you're saying!
Maybe.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:10 PM
I can only read "Loa" in a Zandalari accent.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:10 PM
Perhaps. Mayhaps.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:10 PM
hehe
Um. Does Loa need a diacritical mark? I meant to check.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:11 PM
No.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:11 PM
O good. I might have checked and forgotten when it didn't have one. : )

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:12 PM
"Loa" in this case means "growth" and is an Elvish word used for the solar year when considering primarily seasonal changes in vegetation.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:12 PM
So it's also sometimes rendered "time of growth". Both work.
Since it's just one word, growth seems just right.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:12 PM
I'm reading from Return of the King.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:13 PM
Appendix

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:14 PM
Loa was broken up into 6 periods of time, which could considered either long months or short seasons: Tuilë, Lairë, Yavië, Quellë, Hrivë, Coirë, which translate to "Spring, Summer, Autumn, Fading, WInter, Stirring."
[4:15 PM]
Those are the Quenya forms, so when you read my stories you'll know what time of year it is now :}

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:15 PM
I do recall those, yes. My memory hasn't completely left me on the appendices.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:16 PM
Sindarin forms for you Silvan Elves: Ethuil, Laer, Iavas, Firith, Rhiw, Echuir.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:16 PM
Interesting that Spring and Stirring are different, as is Autumn and Fading.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:17 PM
Yes, noticed that as well... makes me wonder if spring and autumn have different meanings in this system.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:18 PM
Early spring can look pretty bare, so maybe that's why?
And autumn can be gorgeous with all the leaf color. Then it goes brown and falling.
Guessing here.
[4:19 PM]
Anyway, on to

[4:23 PM]
The "Hunt for Buried Treasure" event is going.
In amusing news, Frali and Fainan are currently in LotRO.
We could have Auros in here for nearly a full team.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:23 PM
Exploring Angmar?

Varda — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
All we'd need is Phar. ; )
We could!
Angmar is part of the game, big area.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:25 PM
Yeah, I picked up the Sprite darter set in one of the holiday packs.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:26 PM
Grats : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:26 PM
Also note the Night Warrior eye-customization nods

Varda — Yesterday at 4:26 PM

Oh, and for an extra detail you might recognize, scroll down to where her pets are displayed

Varda — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
Helvy!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
Yes

Varda — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
Are you going to introduce Ashtail to our tale too? : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
Doubtful, just a blue fox I picked up in Loch Modan and liked the color of

Varda — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
Nice

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
Helvy's the main one!

Varda — Yesterday at 4:29 PM
: )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:29 PM
But she has the talent to use both pets at once, so it's a merry gang.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:29 PM
ah hah! : )
[4:30 PM]
I should mention the players in LotRO for the past week:

Landroval kin branch:
Arien
Eonwe
Eowyn
Fangorn
Nar
Pengolodh
Varda

Crickhollow kin branch:
Arien
Eonwe
Falco
Varda

Treebeard kin branch:
Varda

[4:30 PM]
Our Shadowfax server kin branch is now eliminated since Fainan moved to Crickhollow and removed the new Valar Guild-1, to join the Valar Guild.
Your characters will need to request an invitation to that Valar Guild when ready.
[4:31 PM]

Starcraft 2: Fangorn, Eowyn, Faramir, RealFloppa played this last week I believe.

Any other gaming news, Valarite sightings?
[4:34 PM]
Any Fladrif sightings? Hope he is able someday to be on Discord again. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
Online right now, but not in a game, and has the away icon.
Must be busy!

Varda — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
Good to hear he's around. : )
Falco is likely busy with Starship looking as if it may be launching today.
[4:36 PM]
So, on to

top

Tolkien!

[4:37 PM]
Sauron-(Valar), that evil guy, suggested discussing the economy as it is set up in Tolkien's stories.
Maybe he's looking into taking it over?
Have we seen anything that looks like an economy, flourishing or otherwise?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:38 PM
Well, there  must be some value to gold, judging by Erebor... but I can't readily remember it used much.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:38 PM
Aye, gold could have been the currency all over, for it to be so important.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:39 PM
Was there any mention of coin in Bree? The inn, the pony, the apple?

Varda — Yesterday at 4:39 PM
Bag of gold dust, measure on a scale. [Note: was typing same time as Phar, not an answer but a suggestion.]

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:39 PM
Heh, yes.
Oh, and Bilbo definitely had some treasure of value.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:39 PM
I didn't see any mention of gold dust, but it seems very likely.
True. Gems and gold, goodies from the dragon horde and the trolls' stash.
[4:40 PM]
Silver spoons.
[4:41 PM]
I wonder if the spoons were intended to be used for tableware by Lobelia or to be melted down?
Saruman had trade with the Shire. Including leaf.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:41 PM
Probably used anytime someone was over to show just how rich she was.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:41 PM
There is trade, certainly. Must either be coin, or bartering.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:42 PM
We know there was trade for Mirkwood. They sent the kegs downriver to the human towns.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:42 PM
And I don't see many inn-customers bringing in items to barter with for Butterbur.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:42 PM
Agreed with Eonwe on the spoons. She believed she should have gotten Bag End, and it was a way of having it.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:42 PM
I'm sure there was both, depending on the relative wealth or even temporary financial situation of the participants. A farmer or rancher might not have alot of coin on hand, but when you have some 200 head of cattle, you're not a pauper either.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
"Here's half a hog, can I stay here tonight?"

Varda — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
"Sure! Hey guys, pork on the menu!"

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
Here's a new saying for you: Better pork than orc.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
That works. : )
[4:44 PM]
Barely : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:44 PM
Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys!

Varda — Yesterday at 4:44 PM
That stone soup was a mite thin.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:45 PM
Stone soup: now with 10% extra mites? :}
Don't think that raises the protein levels by much.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
Diet food
I agree that they must have used coin of some kind.
That would also fit the concept of an English village style for the Hobbits.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
Shillings and pounds.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
And the Bree village
Likely.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
Shire Shilling.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
Actually

Varda — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
Maybe not those words. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:48 PM
By the way, am I completely misremembering/confused, or was there something of a toy crafting business in Dale? [Note: correct. Famous for toy-making.]

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:48 PM
If you recall, Azog stuffed "a small pouch with a few coins of little worth" into the mouth of Thrain when he tossed his head back out of Moria. So coinage was common enough that orcs would've got some.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
ahh, well thought!

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Excuse me, Thror, not Thrain.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Ah, good catch.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
A few coins of little worth, implying other coins and known value. Enough to make an insult even.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Coins of little worth. That's probably a matter of material or size, presumably mostly the former.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
Like coppers.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
Wooden nickels  :)

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
And pardon, It was thrown at Nar, not stuffed into Thror's mouth. I must've mixed it with another story.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:51 PM
Aye, Eonwe. We got the gist. Thanks for making the corrections!
Also, they had property ownership.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:51 PM
...I just googled "bag of coins stuffed in mouth" and I don't recommend it unless you want pictures of a coin purse shaped like a human mouth.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:51 PM
Farms, ranches.
[4:52 PM]
Thanks, Phar. Will avoid. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:52 PM
Regardless, I do recall that element in a story somewhere...

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:52 PM
Aha!
[4:53 PM]
They thrust the purse into Azog's mouth after Dain had hewn his head from his body. Then they put the head on a stake as a warning to other orcs.  I was just wrong about who it happened to.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:54 PM
Wealthy landowners. Ownership of a mill.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:54 PM
Ahh, well, there we go

Varda — Yesterday at 4:54 PM
Thanks, Eonwe!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:54 PM
Was it the same purse? Did they keep it?

Varda — Yesterday at 4:54 PM
They used it to infuriate the other dwarves into fighting, I think.
[4:55 PM]
It was a huge insult on top of just being horrible.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:55 PM
Yes, it was the same purse Azog threw at Nar. That was the point of what they did.
[4:56 PM]
Wouldn't have been so big if it were just some random bag of coins.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:56 PM
So many questions... did Dain keep it on him at all times? Did Thorin? Was it kept in a drawer somewhere in Erebor?

Varda — Yesterday at 4:57 PM
Maybe on a pole like a banner?

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:57 PM
Thrain likely carried it with him while they hunted for Azog.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:57 PM
That's likely.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:58 PM
They pretty well emptied the Misty Mountains of orcs in their hunt. It wasn't pretty.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:58 PM
So a bit of a family heirloom until they got their revenge.
Which makes me wonder if it was passed to Thorin before Thrain's capture, or if Gandalf took it from him with the key and map.
[4:59 PM]
If I have my timeline right.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:59 PM
It was already stuffed into Azog's mouth by then.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:59 PM
Put in its proper place.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:59 PM
facedesk Oh, sorry, I thought they put it back at the Battle of Five Armies.
[5:00 PM]
But that was Bolg they faced then.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:00 PM
Thrain decided to take his chances going back to Erebor sometime after the Battle of Azanulbizar, and ended up captured and taken to Dol Guldur.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:01 PM
yeah in the movie gandalf went there and spoke with thrain
[5:02 PM]
if i remember that part right

Varda — Yesterday at 5:04 PM
Sauron's forces disrupted trade by making the roads less safe for merchant travel. Having the ability to make their own stuff in an area was a big help, such as for the Shire.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:04 PM
Aye, Gandalf met him in the dungeons of Dol Guldur.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:06 PM
but I think the ring was taken from him under torture wasn t it

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:07 PM
Aye.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:07 PM
and he went sort of mad before gandalf met him and they fought together but Dain was killed

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
Dain? No. If you mean Thrain, then I believe that's how the movie has it, aye.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:10 PM
I seem to have pictured Tharbad as a trading city, but can't find any reference to it.
A port and a ford at least, I suppose.
Maybe they charged money for use of the ford

Varda — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
Answer my questions three...

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
Docking fee, offloading fee, "union" fee, storage fee...

Varda — Yesterday at 5:12 PM
I can see guilds maybe, not exactly unions.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:12 PM
insurance fee...

Varda — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
Surcharge (tax on the tax)

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
"protection" fee... "It'd be a shame if something werez ta happenz to youz boat while youz waz in port. Just sayin'."

Varda — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Shelob was paid in a fashion to keep the tunnel from being taken by good guys. A few orcs here and there for lunch.

Corsair dock fee

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Ah, orcs as currency

Varda — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Aye : )
[5:15 PM]

oops. We are over the hour.
gavel raps impatiently on the shelf side
hammerpad whirs around a few times

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:16 PM
hammerpad fee...
:}

Varda — Yesterday at 5:16 PM
gavel leaps and is spun out from the hammerpad

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:43 PM
Well, back after watching Star Wars VII on tv
time for personal report!
[8:44 PM]
gaming report, that is

For (non)flashgaming, here's

[8:45 PM]
A not very long, intuitive escape game where you have to look around, find clues, solve puzzles, and finally escape through the door. As escape games go
[8:46 PM]
Not too difficult, as the puzzles aren't too far-fetched. Also, whenever an input is needed, it doesn't reset when looking away, which is very useful and means it doesn't rely on your memory.
Fun little time-waster, so have fun!

Blizzard gaming:
[8:49 PM]
Hearthstone:
Level 71 on the reward track now. The quest event is going, a battleground quest series themed around murlocs, and giving murloc'd skins of several battlegrounds heroes as rewards.
[8:50 PM]
I never do battlegrounds otherwise, but it went pretty well, and I even managed to win one with Omu as hero.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:51 PM
Being murloc-themed, it requires the use of some specific minions, including venomous minions, of which 2 out of 3 are in fact murlocs, so make sure you're in a murloc-containing lobby for it. Hint: Earliest one is at tier 4, so if you're going for the quest, upgrade to 4 as soon as you can!
In any case, only one quest left, at 8 days to go, so should be good

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:52 PM
Hallo! I am reading your report, Ar! Always good to catch up on uour doings!!!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:53 PM
Brawl is Nozdormu at the End of Time: the Nozdormu effect is always going, which means you have 12 seconds per turn. So make sure your deck doesn't rely on too complicated combos, and you should be fine
Aiya Sandalf!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:53 PM
Maybe I should try the Escape Game

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:54 PM
Sure, it's simple enough

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 8:54 PM
Thanks for the link!
Sounds like my cup of tea....simple enough for the gaming simpletons, like me.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 8:55 PM
If you can think a bit logically and follow some clues, you'll go a long way!

WoW:
[8:56 PM]
Raiding: We've now beaten 8 out of 9 bosses in the normal difficulty of the raid, only Sarkareth remains. I got my first tier piece through the vault, and a few other upgrades from the raid. Slowly upgrading!
[8:57 PM]
Also got to tank some bosses again, which I'm enjoying a lot
[8:58 PM]
Weekly quest is world quests, but I've not actually unlocked those yet in Dragonflight, so instead I spent more time alting.
[8:59 PM]
The fire mage has continued into Ardenweald, collecting gorm gris, before moving to Glitterfall Basin where she culled a few gormlings at the Banks of Life, before moving on to quests in the Workshop, overrun by spriggans. That's where she'll continue next week. Then it's back to the main questline!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:02 PM
The undead frost mage, however, has made it to level 10, continuing to quest in Tirisfal Glades, including his first visit to the Undercity, but also around Brill and the watchpost to the east.

And with level 10 he unlocked riding, his actual frost specialization, and transmog! So I mogged him up icy style, and here's his picture, or you can find him in the armory now at

And that's my report for the week! Next week, some more Ardenweald and Mulgore

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:09 PM
Thank you Ar! Sounds as if you are keeping yourself busy. Good on you!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:10 PM
Yupyup! Still going strong

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:10 PM
Fantastiosch! Sorry about the extra "o"...lazy fingers!
[9:12 PM]
For my big garden activity this week, I plan to install the soaker hoses in my three raised vegetable garden beds. That way, I can just hook up the soaker hoses, and let them do the work of watering. Makes life a lot easier.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:12 PM
Hmm, automation

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:13 PM
The overnight temp is FINALLY staying above 50 Grad F every night...the growing season in the Front Range is sort of short, so one must get the garden started as soon as possible...and risk an occasional overnight below 50 Grad F.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:13 PM
I hope everything survives!
[9:14 PM]
As long as you stay above freezing it should be fine, right?

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:14 PM
I have 6 Brandywine Heirloom tomatoes in the garden...they are sensitive to cold temps, so I also hope they survive. Too bad I cannot send you a Brandywine Tomato, they are supposed to be the very tastiest tomato ever.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:15 PM
Brandywine? From the Shire?

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:16 PM
Well, yes...but temperatures (overnight) in the 40s sometimes result in a failure for Brandywines to produce fruit. And no....the Brandywine tomato dates back to the mid-1800s, long before Tolkien was even born. Sort of a neat name, though, nicht wahr?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:16 PM
Indeed!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:17 PM
The big thing in tomatoes is now "heirloom" tomatoes...varieties that go back to the days before hybridization. They are MUCH harder to grow, and they produce far less fruit than the hybrids, but eating an heirloom tomato is tasting a tomato like it is supposed to taste...sweet and sharp at the same time.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:18 PM
Good to know they're being preserved

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:21 PM
You might like to know, Ar, that the word "Brandywine" in English has origins in the two Dutch words "branden" (to burn), and "wijn." Sort of obvious. No doubt branden is related to German brennen to burn, an irregular German verb. The surviving word in English is "brand," that has several different meanings today. Tolkien uses "brand" in a very powerful scene, where Denethor says to Gandalf and Pippin...."See...I can still wield a brand"

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:22 PM
"Brandewijn" is indeed a thing here

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:23 PM
Is it a brandy? After all, brandy is sort of "burnt wine."

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:23 PM
Burned wine, literally. And yes, that's where the word brandy comes from.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:24 PM
I have loved (And still do) an occasional glass of fruit flavored brandy...Schnapps fits into that category, I believe...and one of my real favorites is Slivovitz, or plum brandy.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:25 PM
Never had it, I think. I'm not into alcohol much anyway.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:25 PM
I did say occasional. I am far from a regular drinker. One beer per month, perhaps, or a glass of wine once per week....maybe. Anything harder is a real rarity.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:26 PM
Still more than what I have, but it sounds reasonable
Anyway, getting late here, so namarie!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:26 PM
My doctor thinks so too.
Namarie! Have a wonderful week! Sei gesund!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:26 PM
You too!
