Not sure if anyone needs this, but just an fyi: the little downward-pointing arrow above your character list in LotRO lets you choose how to sort your characters.

Pengolodh 03/03/2023 7:25 AM
Do you mean in the character selection screen?

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 1:51 AM
For those who may have noticed the website is down:
Alatar, who was graciously providing that space to us and has done so for many many years, has passed.
More than the space, I regret losing someone I spent many years in D2 and chatting Tolkien with.
This wasn't completely unexpected but it wasn't expected so soon. Varda and I have been considering options for webspace and once we have something definitive we'll make an announcement.

Sorry for your loss guys.

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 1:21 PM
My condolences as well.

Varda 03/05/2023 4:02 PM
Aiya
Alatar!!

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 4:02 PM
Aiya!

Varda 03/05/2023 4:02 PM
Aiya
[4:03 PM]
This is a big loss for all of us.
[4:04 PM]
Whether you knew him as we did or not. He is why we had so much space for webwork.
So that art you found us with was on his site as well.

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 4:04 PM
I didn't, but he must have been very generous

Varda 03/05/2023 4:04 PM
A Maia of the Valar Guild for many years. : )
[4:06 PM]
Aye, the site says "This account has been suspended"

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 4:06 PM
Heya.

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 4:06 PM
Feels rather... metaphorical.
[4:07 PM]
Aiya!

Varda 03/05/2023 4:07 PM
He was very generous, yes. We weren't the only ones he was helping out with webspace. [Note: church groups as well.]

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 4:08 PM
With as long as you've been around Phar, it's likely you crossed paths with him once or twice, even if you didn't get to game with him. I think he still had time for meetings way back then.

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 4:08 PM
Ah, probably, at least back in the warcraft 3 days.

Varda 03/05/2023 4:10 PM
He joined March 28, 2001 as Full Member Tar-Aldarion-(V).
[4:11 PM]
Ar-Pharazon joined in 2003, so it's possible

Even got my gnome warrior named after him, Caldarion.

Varda 03/05/2023 4:12 PM
He played Rift, LotRO, and WoW.
Yay for Caldarion. : )

ah sorry for your loss there and i knew him by name sure  i think i once had the joy of meetring him once .at least .

Varda 03/05/2023 4:21 PM
He had hoped to come by the meeting after he got cancer, but it didn't happen. He must have been in worse shape than we realized by the time he let us know. And it can sneak up on a person.

Arien  Valar 03/05/2023 4:21 PM
:(

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 4:21 PM
Judging by the in memoriam, it was pretty quick, yes.

Arien  Valar 03/05/2023 4:23 PM
i know .. we had a young colleauge . he was 21,  and lived a healthy life and hoped to go into the Police force . He recovered pretty well and then .. woosh

Varda 03/05/2023 4:23 PM
You're right. The in memorium says:
Mark was diagnosed with metastatic kidney cancer in July and entered treatment. Although there were good signs that the treatment was effective in pushing back the cancer, Mark suffered heart failure on December 12.
[4:30 PM]
Pardon, some background chat figuring how to migrate.

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 4:32 PM
Take your time, just spending some time doing time quests in the time zone for the time dragonflight.
[4:33 PM]
You wouldn't believe how many of these quests are named for time puns.

We will be trying to work out our migration for the website.

Sorry I am late! Gettiing estimates for backyard landscaping, unloading more boxes, getting rid of stuff....whew. Mein Kopf spinnt! My head is spinning....

Varda 03/05/2023 4:34 PM
Any other membership news?
[4:35 PM]
Oh, and in better news, Gimli-(V)'s birthday was yesterday, and his health is better too.

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 4:35 PM
Glad to hear it.

Varda 03/05/2023 4:35 PM
In the best news,
Pengolodh-(V) joined us this past week. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 4:36 PM
Hurrah!
[4:36 PM]
Fladrif also still around, last online 1 day ago.

Varda 03/05/2023 4:36 PM
Pengolodh, would you like to type a few words of introduction? Maybe how you found us, or whatever you'd like to mention?
Many here don't play LotRO and have not met you yet.
[4:38 PM]
He joined February 28 and has been playing on LotRO Landroval with us. : )
[4:40 PM]
Since he seems to be afk, I can give what you might have seen on our News website before it went down:
ahh, there he is. : )

Sandalf13 03/05/2023 4:44 PM
I just reviewed the notes from our conversation above. Please pass on my condolences to the family of Mark Lautenschlager. I did not know him, but it is always sad to hear of one's passing, especially a man who was so generous to the Valar Guild.

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 4:45 PM
Alatar was a good man.

Pengolodh 03/05/2023 4:46 PM
Sure, my name is pengolodh (rl Albert) I found your group / website through a combo of two things.. Searching for tolkien themed art  which I present on my Facebook  silmarillion group and also through the random searches l make about lotro.

Sandalf13 03/05/2023 4:46 PM
Welcome Pengolodh!

Varda 03/05/2023 4:48 PM
I hope our site helped you.

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 4:49 PM
Welcome

Pengolodh 03/05/2023 4:50 PM
Yep. Thanks:)

Varda 03/05/2023 4:50 PM
We hope to put it back online as soon as possible. Parts are still up, that weren't on the same server.
If you have suggestions, we're especially interested since we'll be having a do-over anyway.

Sandalf13 03/05/2023 4:50 PM
Do we need to set up some time of crowd-funding place to get the monies we need to maintain the site?

Varda 03/05/2023 4:51 PM
I will refer your question to Eonwe. It's tricky.
If it looks as if we are making money off of Tolkien, it can be a problem.

Sandalf13 03/05/2023 4:52 PM
Eonwe is good at tricky, I am sure...one must be, to be a successful gamer!
I would think that it would be possible to separate the funding of the site from anything to do with Tolkien, maybe?

Varda 03/05/2023 4:52 PM
The core of our site is the Tolkien Site.

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 4:54 PM
If we did set up some sort of crowd-funding, we would have to look at the legal and financial ramifications for that.

Varda 03/05/2023 4:54 PM
The gaming site alone would be fine
Oh, we still have Discord and our forum.

Sandalf13 03/05/2023 4:55 PM
How did Alatar support the site?

Varda 03/05/2023 4:55 PM
His own money.

Sandalf13 03/05/2023 4:55 PM
I mean, financially. I think it would cost money to host a server.

Varda 03/05/2023 4:55 PM
He had a large section of web real estate and subbed it out to a number of different groups, ours included.
[4:56 PM]
It was on Hostgator. We hope to return to that spot as it served us well. But we'll see.

Sandalf13 03/05/2023 4:58 PM
Does anyone know what the actual cost is/would be for our site using Hostgator?

Varda 03/05/2023 4:59 PM
We are sidechatting on it. Depends on how much space we want to get.

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 5:00 PM
Do we know how much we used?

Sandalf13 03/05/2023 5:00 PM
I would be glad to make a donation to help fund the site, if need be. I don't hink I can carry the whole expense, of course, but I think it would be a good investment  for me to make.

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 5:00 PM
Also, curious... can all the assets and pages easily be moved over, or does it have to be rebuilt from scratch?

Varda 03/05/2023 5:00 PM
Most can be moved over.

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 5:01 PM
If one is careful enough to have backups, one can move it over.
[5:02 PM]
Short answer: If we lose anything in the process, it's not likely to be much. but if you catch something that's missing once we set everything back up, please mention it so we can see what happened.

Arien  Valar 03/05/2023 5:02 PM
welcome Pengolodh :)P

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 5:04 PM
Fair enough, Eonwe

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 5:04 PM
Once we have the issue of "where" resolved, the "what" and "how" should be easier, and I say "should" because I'm accounting for any chance something unexpected starts throwing wrenches like Koopas at us.

Varda 03/05/2023 5:05 PM
Between Eonwe and me, we have the site ready to put back up.

Varda 03/05/2023 5:07 PM

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 5:07 PM
I... must not be up to date with mario games, I don't recall one of those

Varda 03/05/2023 5:07 PM
Arveleg-(V) has been keeping the book review site on his own web space, so it's still up:

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 5:08 PM

[5:10 PM]
Don't go watching it all during the meeting now, hehehe.

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 5:10 PM
I love how these things are literally screwed together
And yes, I remember seeing it, at least.

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 5:12 PM
Kids these days don't understand hard games, heh. They all need to get off my gaming lawn.

Varda 03/05/2023 5:12 PM
So I guess we are covering both Membership and Web in this section of the meeting. : )
Good ol' Pong!

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 5:12 PM
ponders are these the same king every time, and if not, how do they share the same daughter...
[5:13 PM]
Ah, there's the wrench throwers.
Right, continue

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 5:13 PM
Different kings, different kingdoms, but Koopa's causing mischief to slow Mario down after kidnapping the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 5:14 PM
So when they say they've got messages from the Princess, they're not referring to their own princess. Got ya.

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 5:15 PM
Aye.

Varda 03/05/2023 5:17 PM
Just noticed it's after the hour.
[5:18 PM]
Anyone like to see a Tolkien topic or two right quick, (if I'm capable of quick Tolkien, ummm).

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 5:18 PM
Apparently Princess Peach likes writing and giving gifts, to do it 7 times and find a way to sneak them to the kings to give to Mario.
Here's a quick one: what's the name of that Tolkien guy? :}

Varda 03/05/2023 5:18 PM
hehe
[5:19 PM]
And who's buried in Grant's tomb?

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 5:19 PM
John Ronald Reuel!

Varda 03/05/2023 5:19 PM
John Ronald Reul Tolkien

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 5:19 PM
Nobody knows Reuel.

Varda 03/05/2023 5:19 PM
hey now : )

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 5:19 PM
Okay, most people don't  ;)

Varda 03/05/2023 5:19 PM
O well. It was a good movie. "Just Call Me Nobody"
Western comedy

Arien  Valar 03/05/2023 5:20 PM
oh yeah i know that one

Varda 03/05/2023 5:20 PM
"Trinity", "Trinity is Still my Name"

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 5:20 PM
Lol, I've seen "My Name is Nobody." Worth the time I wasted on it, lol. Wasted time worth it? Figure out that paradox :}

Varda 03/05/2023 5:22 PM
Ok, kind of odd the subject I had worked out, considering the news, but here you go.

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 5:22 PM
Sergio Leone, also known for "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."

Varda 03/05/2023 5:22 PM
Clint Eastwood, music, Spanish locations. O yeah.
[5:23 PM]
Oh, we might be able to do regular gaming news?
Eonwe, would you like this whistling hammer?

Ar-Pharazon-V 03/05/2023 5:23 PM
Do you still have access?

Eonw Valar 03/05/2023 5:23 PM
Does it work like this:

Varda 03/05/2023 5:23 PM
We have what we were going to put up. : )
[5:24 PM]
Might have to stuff a rag in the whistling.
But I liked the Whistling in the last movie you mentioned. And Fangorn is quite good at it.

Tolkien

[5:38 PM]
Did anyone else have a Tolkien topic before I start in?
[5:39 PM]
I ran across a short bit in the LotR that brought up the question of what happened to the Orc bodies after Helm's Deep, then found the answer a bit farther along.
[5:40 PM]
It also mentioned how they handled the other bodies. They had a good idea that it needed handled right away and there was a lot.
After the battle of Helm's Deep, the dead riders of the Mark were buried under two mounds: on one side of the field before the Hornburg were riders of the East Dales and on the other were those of the Westfold, but Hama had his own separate grave as he had fallen before the Gate. However, men were concerned because the heaps of Orc bodies were too great for burial or burning. Gandalf told them to let the bodies lie, that the morning would bring new counsel.
So what happened to the bodies?

[5:45 PM]
The Two Towers, "The Road to Isengard"
Away south upon the Hornburg, in the middle night men heard a great noise, as a wind in the valley, and the ground trembled; and all were afraid and no one ventured to go forth.
But in the morning they went out and were amazed; for the slain Orcs were gone, and the trees also.
Far down into the valley of the Deep the grass was crushed and trampled brown, as if giant herdsmen had pastured great droves of cattle there; but a mile below the Dike a huge pit had been delved into the earth, and over it stones were piled into a hill.
Men believed that the Orcs whom they had slain were buried there; but whether those who had fled into the wood were with them, none could say, for no man ever set foot upon that hill.
The Death Down it was afterwards called, and no grass would grow there.
But the strange trees were never seen in Deeping Coomb again; they had returned at night, and had gone far away to the dark dales of Fangorn.
Thus they were revenged upon the Orcs.

Speaking of mogs, trying to find a decent headpiece for my red-haired fire mage, a friend pointed me to a certain candle headpiece, apparently created by alchemists through a recipe from Revendreth. So I set my alchemist to work there, unlocking Shadowlands versions of herbalism and alchemy, but the recipe itself is pretty rare to get.
It requires crypt keys from the Halls of Atonement, at a really low droprate even with the droprate buff of a local spirit, and from the crypts a rare chance to get the vendor.
[9:14 PM]
I spent about an hour farming and didn't even get one key... I might come back to it later, maybe after I level the rogue/alchemist a bit more and maybe am able to clear the entire dungeon there easily in mass pulls.

Sent the druid into Thaldraszus, starting with the capital Valdrakken, where I spied on a rebellious intrusion which ultimately sent me to the South Hold outpost to clean out an invasion of primalists, only to find out that the commander was a traitor and went off to become the first boss of the raid.
After that I visited the mage again in Bastion, dealing with the Maldraxxus invasion at the Temple of Courage.
[9:18 PM]
And finally back to the druid, where I skipped - though noted for the future - some side quests unlocking in Valdrakken, instead going straight for Nozdormu's questline to help out Chromie and the other Timewalkers at the Bronze Oathstone, collecting some temporal energy and clearing out some time anomalies to stabilize the timeline.
[9:20 PM]
Next up I'll be aiding Chromie some more, before visiting the mage for a shorter questline, and then finishing up the main quests in Thaldraszus.... I'm aiming to complete it and unlock the Engine of Innovation in the next reset, so I can start working on 2 good gear upgrades that need it.
