Before-meeting

Eonwë Valar — 07/24/2023 7:31 PM
Since we talked about it yesterday, The Nature of Middle-Earth has an exerpt called "hair" that says Ingwë had "curling golden hair", Finwë had "long dark hair" (and so did all the Noldor minus exceptions by intermarriage) and Elwë and Olwë had pale hair. Taken by itself, one could read alot into the use of the word "long" for Finwë only, but in HoME12: Peoples of Middle-Earth, "The Shibboleth of Fëanor" it says Finwë's hair wasn't of particulary exceptional length or beauty etc. in comparison to other Elves, so I guess we shouldn't take that to mean Ingwë gets a regular haircut :}
[7:33 PM]
And since I feel like we talked about this in the recent past, another exerpt from the section title "Beards": "The tribes of Men from whom the Numenoreans were descended were normal, and hence the majority of them would have beards."

July 25, 2023

Shelob — 07/25/2023 1:59 AM
As for men, I'm not convinced the majority would have beards. Generally speaking, men of "higher decent" would be clean shaven due to having the means to afford either a regular barber or their own shaving tools.
Of course there is absolutely no evidence of this within Tolkien's writing, but the idea of a distinct line between aristocracy and those of higher learning on the one hand and the common folk on the other, was, I think, still firmly rooted in English culture at the time.
[2:05 AM]
And while I'm not sure about this, it's quite likely that while the original tribes might have a majority of beards, the Edain could very well have tried to emulate the Elves, who were their teachers.
After all, and again, I can offer no particular proof from the books, the Edain were fairer and longer lived than those of the tribes that came after.
This can, of course, be attributed to their proximity to the Elves, whose eyes still shone with the light of Valinor in the elder days, but it would also not be wrong to assume that the Elves taught the Edain basic hygiene.

Eonwë Valar — 07/25/2023 8:48 PM
Beards in older times were seen as a sign of age/maturity and wisdom, the former reasons being why they'd keep them in the past and why many of us tend to get rid of them today, so I would expect similar in most human cultures (and beards were definitely a big thing for Dwarves, which I can say with certainty based on a passage I read the other day if I can find it again). That said, it would not surprise me (though like you, without any evidence to back it up) that some Numenoreans might choose to shave to emulate those descended from Elros, but it'd be pretty clear they had to shave. Or they could just style them.
[8:53 PM]
Then again, since it would be an exclusive trait of the royal line, in darker days shaving your beard could've also ended up being considered trying to claim a lineage you didn't belong to, which could end badly.

Eonwë Valar — 07/25/2023 8:55 PM
But the wording does say "the majority of them would have beards" so I think the average Numenorean is not going to be completely removing his beard.
[8:58 PM]
Bah, now I want to find that spot on Dwarves but I skimmed through too much stuff to narrow it down so I'm not going to get into it right now.

July 26, 2023

Ar-Pharazon-V — 07/26/2023 1:58 PM
Imagine trying to pass off as Elvish lineage, and being caught shaving.
[2:00 PM]
Heh, like a Lucky Luke comic I once read where he caught a spy pretending to be a Native American guide, by finding evidence of shaving.

July 27, 2023

Eonwë Valar — 07/27/2023 9:43 PM
Heya all. A little fridge brilliance re: elf hair. The Elves of Lothlorien at least are said to use elf-hair for rope and for bowstrings. Given the average length of both, someone is going from really long hair to really short.

July 28, 2023

Ar-Pharazon-V — 07/28/2023 1:02 PM
Gives "real Elvish rope" a whole new meaning...

July 29, 2023

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 9:27 PM
Heya all. 22 people claimed to be online here everyone needs to join WoW  in the US so we can have a raid, lol :}

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 9:36 PM
What game are you playing? I just signed up for WoW.

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 9:38 PM
Nothing right now, but I was mostly joking. Would take alot of work for anyone just starting out to get up to raiding.

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 9:39 PM
OK then. I will start somewhere. Hope you are enjoying the weekend.

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 9:40 PM
In between about a hundred different tasks.

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 9:40 PM
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Old Navy expression.

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 9:42 PM

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 9:49 PM
Ah. Thanks. All they needed was some drawn butter, I suppose...probably hard to find on the Mysterious Island.

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 9:53 PM
Finding drawn butter would make the island even more mysterious methinks.

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 9:53 PM
Methinks you are right, mellon nin.

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 9:55 PM
Those old Ray Harryhausen movies were lots of fun.

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 9:55 PM
I remember watching some of them when  was a wee lad...ages and ages ago.

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 9:56 PM
Same, just a generation later.

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 9:56 PM
I am glad you got to enjoy them too, then.

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 10:04 PM
Was getting ready to put up a scene from the classic Clash of the Titans, came across a clip from the newer movie. I'd forgotten Luke Evans (Bard from the Hobbit trilogy) was in that as Apollo.

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 10:05 PM
Do you know, I have NEVER seen the Hobbit Trilogy. Don't know if I want to, either. I was not pleased with the liberties that Jackson took with Tolkien, although I admire the craft and beauty of his movies.

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 10:09 PM
Hard for me to say whether I'd recommend it or not. Lord of the Rings was truer in many ways. As a Tolkien fan you'll definitely feel the fluff that was inserted to pad the movies out to 3 (and, to be fair, to fill out characters who you may want to either like or hate, who weren't perhaps given enough in the book). I would only point to a handful of things I thought were particularly egregious, some of them in the extended editions.

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 10:10 PM
With your encouraging description, perhaps I should swallow my unneeded hubris and deign to watch the Hobbit trilogy.

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 10:11 PM
Eh, I wouldn't do it unless you want to.

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 10:12 PM
Mal sehen ("time to see," in German...the equivalent expression to "time will tell," auf Englisch! he he

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 10:12 PM
If you can set aside your Tolkien knowledge long enough to get through it, I'd say you might mostly enjoy it. There's some fun stuff in there. Other things are probably going to make you mad.
[10:16 PM]
I think there's some attempts at humor that fall flat, and I didn't like the implied romance or the explicit romance (I won't tell you which characters were involved in which, because if you watch it it'll become clear if you don't already know), but the Trolls were amusing, the Witch-King/Dol Guldor stuff was kind of fun, and seeing some of the scenes from the book come to life was fun. Other parts clearly exist only for the "WOW 3D!!!" effect.

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 10:17 PM
I am sure of the latter. It seems to me that movies today try to outdo each previous movie in terms of special effects and computer generated animation, for example.

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 10:19 PM
I wouldn't say I regretted seeing them, but they could've probably made 2 solid movies out of the three they made.
[10:20 PM]
And Radagast was just not funny to me.

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 10:21 PM
I was thinking originally that there was enought stuff in The Hobbit to make one long, good movie. After all, Jackson took THREE movies for the three-volume LoTR...and Th Hobbit is only one short (relatively) book!

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 10:27 PM
If you want a good solid version of the Hobbit, can't go wrong with the Rankin-Bass animated version.

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 10:27 PM
I will bid you a fond Namarie, Eonwe...at least until tomorrow. It has been a long day for me. My friend of well over 60 years departed from Union Station Thursday evening, and I spent yesterday straightening up the house and getting some work done that I had neglected during his stay. I am ready for a sound sleep!

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 10:27 PM
You lose Beorn, but the story doesn't suffer for that loss.
[10:28 PM]
Sleep well.

Sandalf13 — 07/29/2023 10:28 PM
Ah Beorn... a truly remarkable character. There are days when I wish I could transform into a bear...although there are many days when I feel like one...especially when low on sleep! he he.

Eonwë Valar — 07/29/2023 10:28 PM

Tolkien!

[4:22 PM]
If anyone has a topic, go ahead and mention. I have a Tolkien Moment for when we are ready.
Ok then. : )

RotK, "Mount Doom"
The Ring is destroyed, fires jumping to the roof, so Sam grabs Frodo and carries him out where it should have been safer.
.
Quote:
[4:25 PM]
And there upon the dark threshold of the Sammath Naur, high above the plains of Mordor, such wonder and terror came on him that he stood still forgetting all else, and gazed as one turned to stone.
A brief vision he had of swirling cloud, and in the midst of it towers and battlements, tall as hills, founded upon a mighty mountain-throne above immeasurable pits; great courts and dungeons, eyeless prisons sheer as cliffs, and gaping gates of steel and adamant: and then all passed.
Towers fell and mountains slid; walls crumbled and melted, crashing down; vast spires of smoke and spouting streams went billowing up, up until they toppled like an overwhelming wave an its wild crest curled and came foaming down upon the land.
And then at last over the miles between there came a rumble, rising to a deafening crash and roar; the earth shook, the plain heaved and cracked, and Orodruin reeled. (edited)
Fire belched from its riven summit.
The skies burst into thunder seared with lightning. Down like lashing whips fell a torrent of black rain.
And into the heart of the storm, with a cry that pierced all other sounds, tearing the clouds asunder, the Nazgul came, shooting like flaming bolts, as caught in the fiery ruin of hill and sky they crackled, withered, and went out.
End quote.
[4:26 PM]
.
[4:26 PM]
Immediately after the massive destruction comes a moment of great contrast. Remember we are seeing from Sam's pov on both scenes. He is the only one who can see both of these things and is most impacted by them.
[4:27 PM]
Quote:
"Well, this is the end, Sam Gamgee," said a voice by his side. And there was Frodo, pale and worn, and yet himself again; and in his eyes there was peace now, neither strain of will, nor madness, nor any fear. His burden was taken away. There was the dear master of the sweet days in the Shire.
"Master!" cried Sam, and fell upon his knees. In all that ruin of the world for the moment he felt only joy, great joy. The burden was gone. His master had been saved; he was himself again, he was free...
End quote.
Open to comments.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
Not very geologic, but exciting reading. Once again, Tolkien evinces his lack of geologic knowledge. There is NO safe place on an exploding volcano...and I suspect, geologically speaking, that Orodruin is an explosive volcano (there are three types: explosive, composite, and shield). The Hawaiin Islands are shield types. Mt Fuji is a composite, as is Mt St Helens in the U.S.
[4:29 PM]
Explosive volcanoes are generally the smallest of the three tyoes, but the most deadly.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:30 PM
Perhaps safe is relative. Wouldn't it have been safer than staying inside the cone?

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:31 PM
True...but it was only a matter of time. In a wonderful Deux ex machina, the Eagles appear and save the day...again.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:33 PM
I find the description of Barad-dur rather striking, in that quote. Talking about the mountain throne, the various towers and battlements... it sounds rather more sprawling than what I imagined Sauron's tower to be, reminding me more of Thangorodrim instead.

ah interesting i didn t know that one

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_ex_machina
    Deus ex machina
Deus ex machina ( DAY-əs ex-MA(H)K-in-ə, Latin: [ˈdɛ.ʊs ɛks ˈmaːkʰɪnaː]; plural: dei ex machina; English "god from the machine") is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem in a story is suddenly or abruptly resolved by an unexpected and unlikely occurrence. Its function is generally to resolve an otherwise irresolvable plot situatio...

From there :
"Origin of the expression
Deus ex machina is a Latin calque from Greek ἀπὸ μηχανῆς θεός (apò mēkhanês theós) 'god from the machine'.[7] The term was coined from the conventions of ancient Greek theater, where actors who were playing gods were brought on stage using a machine. The machine could be either a crane (mechane) used to lower actors from above or a riser that brought them up through a trapdoor. Aeschylus introduced the idea and it was used often to resolve the conflict and conclude the drama. The device is associated mostly with Greek tragedy, although it also appeared in comedies.[8]" (edited)

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
Was it really totally unexpected if the eagles were mentioned 3-4 chapters earlier at the Black Gate?

Varda — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
Miles between.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
well our "god" in this sitauation was gandalf on Gwaihir with Menelvagor and Landroval

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
and god not being that out of the air since Gandalf is a Maia

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:36 PM
Huh. I'm now reminded of an MLP episode where the main character messed up more and more, became more and more insane and created more and more chaos... and at the end the ruler of the land, pretty much a goddess in the mythology, dropped in out of nowhere and resolved the whole thing with a bit of magic.
Guess that's the very essence of a deus ex machina

Varda — Yesterday at 4:37 PM
He finally annoyed her into acting?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:37 PM
She, but pretty much
...Actually, isn't that also pretty much the plot of the Sorcerer's Apprentice as well?

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:39 PM
"English "god from the machine")[2][3] is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem in a story is suddenly or abruptly resolved by an unexpected and unlikely occurrence.[4][5]"
--- if the Eagles are already part of the battle, and we know they've helped Gandalf escape in the past (could even say forshadowed when they rescued Gandalf from the second of the Two Towers(TM) when we was a prisoner there), is it that unlikely they'd help Gandalf out one more time to rescue Sam and Frodo since he now knows one or both made it so far as to get the Ring into the fire?

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
Probably not
[4:42 PM]
I mean the eagles are the eyes of Eonwe , clolsely associated with him , and i think he looks after his own and is quite all knowing with living in the wind and souch and the very air .. i d think he had kknown anyway

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:42 PM
I still believe that Radagast does not get enough credit. He may have commjunicated with this friends the Eagles and let them know what was going on....hence their appearance before the Black Gate.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:42 PM
Eyes of Manwë, hehe.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
well i had thought Manwe .. but wasnt sure :

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
Radagast the Brown? Radagast the bird-tamer? Radagast the fool?

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
It is still a very convenient event for saving Frodo and Sam.
[4:44 PM]
Aye. My good fool buddy. After all, I am Sandalf the Mottled. (Like mottled clay)

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
Well he could've led an army of woodland creatures to the War of the Ring. Might've made a right proper Disney battle out of the whole affair. Or maybe he could've convinced something more dangerous to come along, like wolves and bears.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
Bird-tamer might be foreshadowing?
[4:47 PM]
Hmm, army of bunnies.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:48 PM
The Eagles of Manwe are spoken of in the Sil also, made by him in the Music, and used to help see and do in Middle-earth.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:48 PM
Attack of the killer moles!

Varda — Yesterday at 4:48 PM
Sandalf the Mottled. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
I wonder if an army of bunnies and other gnawers might have helped Saruman against the Ents.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Not that a rabbit could do much in that kind of a battle, but even rabbits know how to be dangerous:

Varda — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Not likely, considering Saruman had a mind of wheels and gears.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
you mean a la that film scene where Radagast distracrs the wargs from the fellowship :: Gandalf cris "take care these are  Gundabad warks " Radagast answers back "Ha! But these are Rhosgobe; rabbots!"

Varda — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
: )

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
i really had to chuckle at that in the film

Varda — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
And the rabbit won in the video. : )

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:51 PM
You wascally wabbit....
Elmer Fudd

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:52 PM
I  was also thinking of the scene in the parody book Bored of the Rings were the ents' army was an army of large living vegetables, and after defeating Saruman and coming to reinforce Minas Tirith, they were intercepted and destroyed by an army of evil rabbits.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:52 PM

[4:58 PM]
Through that, I just found https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Ringbearer which I'd never heard of before...
    The Last Ringbearer
The Last Ringbearer (Russian: Последний кольценосец, romanized: Posledniy kol'tsenosets) is a 1999 fantasy fan-fiction book by the Russian paleontologist Kirill Eskov.
It is an alternative account of, and an informal sequel to, the events of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. It has been translated into English by Yisroel Markov, but the ...

[4:59 PM]
It sounds pretty interesting, just too bad the translation was never published.
Oh, looks like it might be available online...

Sounds very cynical.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Indeed.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Probably, but could still be good  Treat it as a parody if nothing else!

Shelob — Yesterday at 5:04 PM
Aiya!

Aiya Shelob : )

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:06 PM
aiya Shelob :)

Varda — Yesterday at 5:06 PM
Any other comments on the topic? The contrast between the horror outside Orodruin and the joy of Frodo's being normal again?
[5:07 PM]
From Sam's viewpoint, so it's very strong.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:07 PM
Sounds like the kind of book the youth would've been reading and believing in Tolkien's Fourth Age followup to LotR.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
I suppose that even in the face of fiery rocky death, there would be joy in seeing that Frodo is finally free from his burden, and that if they were to die, they would die being themselves, and free.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
Aye, Phar

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
Here at the end of all things.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:09 PM

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:09 PM
Of course, trapped on the side of Orodruin, their worst threat was ash and poisonous gases from the volcano.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:09 PM
It is better to cast one finger into the fire than the whole body?

Varda — Yesterday at 5:10 PM
They expected to die there, aye Sandalf.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:10 PM
"I have... freed... myself." "No, old friend. You freed us all."

Varda — Yesterday at 5:10 PM
Aye Eonwe, especially if the One Ring thinks it's still on Frodo rather than Gollum.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
If Gollum had grafted Frodo's finger on his body, with ring still on it... who would the Ring think it was on?

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
I tell my friends that if the supervolcano in Yellowstone ever explodes, it is game over for most of eastern Wyoming and Nebraska...it has happened before and the fossil record proves it...buried animals at a watering hole in eastern Nebraska completely preserved...they suffocated from ash and dust when a similar volacno exploded back in the Oligocene.

Shelob — Yesterday at 5:12 PM
If that super volcano explodes, it's bye bye for most of the US midwest. The dustcloud would travel half the country and smother everthing in a blanket of ash.
[5:13 PM]
We're lucky Orodruin is more like a mild Mt Vesuvius.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
relaxes back in Europe

Shelob — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
The economic fallout will be felt all across the world.
[5:16 PM]
And if it reaches the mississipi river, that will pretty much kill a very significant portion of the world's food supply.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:18 PM
very comforting thought just before going to bed

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:19 PM
I'm not too worried. I've studied the history of life as well. What I've learned.. change is inevitable, and no matter the disaster, the world recovers eventually.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:19 PM
The eruption in the Oligocene resulted in a whopping 5 meters of ash being dposited across eastern NE. More than enough to bury everyone.
[5:20 PM]
Just ask the Rhinos at the Ashfall Fossil Beds near Creighton, NE.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:22 PM

many years ago someone introduced me to a sort of metal fantasy band like that... where the albums, with all songs in order, would tell a single story. But I don't know which band anymore.
something with dragons?

For (non)flashgaming, here's

    Kongregate
    blue
Blue, another puzzle game for you!
Can you make the screen blue in all 25 levels? Each level has its own logic.
You can also get the FREE mobile version with...

[9:38 PM]
Puzzle game that's part of a color-themed series, and from one of my favorite game developers on the site.
Make each level blue! Each level has its own rules, which you have to figure out
And if you like it, plenty of other colors available!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:49 PM
Blizzard gaming:
[9:50 PM]
Diablo 4:
No progress this week. I knew it'd be slower, but apparently I didn't have time at all this week
[9:52 PM]
Hearthstone:
Level 144 on the reward track now. And that's where it ends, because the next expansion and reward track start in about 19 hours
[9:53 PM]
Completed the midsummer quest event, getting all the packs and hero skin rewards.
I've now got over 300 packs to open, as I've still not bothered... maybe when I come back after the vacation
[9:55 PM]
Brawl is Fury of Kael'thas! Choose a class, build a deck, every third spell you cast in a turn will cost 0 mana. So I got a mage with 30 spells, about a third of which very expensive and the rest very cheap. Just gotta be a bit lucky after that
[9:56 PM]
WoW:

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:57 PM
Raiding still continuing. Neltharion's going quite smoothly these days, and our dps is getting so good that we had to move the starting location for the fight just to line up for the next phase.
No luck with Sarkareth on heroic yet.
[9:58 PM]
Weekly quests are pet battles and timewalks, I've completed both but no upgrades.
[9:59 PM]
Completed the megadungeon once again, unlocking infinite scales for yet another dragonriding mount, the Winding Slitherdrake. And enough aspects' crests to max out pants, gloves and boots. More mythic appearances!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:59 PM
OOops....got to run. Early business meeting tomorrow. Namarie! I will finish your report tomorrow evening. Have a wonderful week ahead! Sei gesund!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:59 PM
And a quantum staff, unlocking a random appearance, which in this case was apparently from a lowlevel battleground lootbox.
Ah, namarie
Good luck with the meeting!
[10:01 PM]
As expected, brawl this week got me enough honor to finish the trading post tender for July! Free reward for that was a Grotto Netherwing Drake, same skin as the Netherwings from Outland, but dragonriding version.
[10:02 PM]
And I also bought the spectral tiger cub, and the new mount, Felcrystal Scorpion. Looking good when used by my new orc warlock
[10:03 PM]
Not much alting done, got a few quests with the mage in Revendreth. Next quest chapter almost done, but I don't think I'll have time next week either
We'll see what next week brings, but I doubt I'll be able to do much besides the daily stuff!
[10:05 PM]
And that's my report for the week!
Namarie

Varda — Yesterday at 11:28 PM
Thank you, Phar.
