@Guild-friend Valar Guild meeting time! Come say hi, chat gaming and Tolkien, or lurk!

Sandalf13 — 01/29/2023 4:01 PM
I am up at my one week per year timeshare at Swan Mountain, near Keystone Ski rsort and Arapahoe Basin. Joanne and  I bought this place in 1982. We have used it almost every year since. Lots of good memories. I like to ski the groomed black trails...steep and fast, but NO bumps. My honm Thornton got anothger 2 inches of snow today.
[4:02 PM]
As they say, I am living the life!

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:02 PM
Sounds fantastic!

Ar-Pharazon-V — 01/29/2023 4:02 PM
Pass some snow over here!

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:02 PM
Thanks for dropping in to be with us with so much going on. : )

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:03 PM
Lots of rain here, lots and lots.
[4:03 PM]
The trees are very happy, and the flowers, rose bushes.
[4:03 PM]

A bit of update, thanks to Sandalf. : )

Sandalf13 — 01/29/2023 4:06 PM

[4:07 PM]
Oh, wonderful photos!

Sandalf13 — 01/29/2023 4:07 PM
It is a beautiful place. I am thankful that I can still do this and that I am here to do it.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 01/29/2023 4:07 PM
It looks like you're carrying a smaller skier in your arm.

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:07 PM
Can I put the one of you on snowskis on your author page, at least as a link?

Sandalf13 — 01/29/2023 4:07 PM
That is my crash helmet. Almost big enough to be a baby.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 01/29/2023 4:07 PM
But yes, it looks great
[4:08 PM]
Yeah, but there appears to be a skier poking out of it

Sandalf13 — 01/29/2023 4:10 PM
This picture is of Buffalo Mountain. Can you see the back of the buffalo? The Native Americans gave this mountain its name way back...The head is to the left and the rounded back is to the right.

[4:10 PM]
The mountain is in the background...snow covered....not the little one in the foreground.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 01/29/2023 4:11 PM
Ahh, and the back tapers off all the way to the right. I like it.

Eonwλ Valar — 01/29/2023 4:11 PM

Ar-Pharazon-V — 01/29/2023 4:12 PM

Sandalf13 — 01/29/2023 4:12 PM
"Hoy" is "today" in is he saying Ahoy, Today?

Eonwλ Valar — 01/29/2023 4:12 PM
It's a very old telephone greeting.
[4:13 PM]
Because he's a very old man.

Sandalf13 — 01/29/2023 4:13 PM
Funny...we say "Ahoy" in the Navy as a way of hailing a stranger.

Eonwλ Valar — 01/29/2023 4:13 PM

Sandalf13 — 01/29/2023 4:13 PM
Ahoy there,, mately!

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:13 PM
Ahoy is used for hello here sometimes

Sandalf13 — 01/29/2023 4:14 PM
Then, as Arien surely knows, there is the Island of Hoy up in the Shetlands. We steamed by it one day back in 1973.

Eonwλ Valar — 01/29/2023 4:15 PM
As described in that link, "Ahoy" in the salutation is derived from the nautical term.

Arien  Valar — 01/29/2023 4:15 PM

Eonwλ Valar — 01/29/2023 4:17 PM
In addition, as I recall, Mr. Burns has the phone number "2". Considering the phone was invented in 1876...

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:17 PM
[4:18 PM]
Have to wonder how old Mr. Burns really is. : )

Arien  Valar — 01/29/2023 4:19 PM
well i wonder .. on that note my birthday is tommorrow :)

Sandalf13 — 01/29/2023 4:19 PM
That is the USS Caloosahatchee (AO-98) leaving Genoa, Italy, in 1973. I was on the Bridge as the Officer of the Deck that day. We were empty, that is why the bow is so high.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 01/29/2023 4:19 PM
Happy birthday!

Arien  Valar — 01/29/2023 4:19 PM
bless you  sandalf

Arien  Valar — 01/29/2023 4:24 PM
hopefully Varda ^7 it is an infiltration of the less subtle kind in Minas Morgul .. i always get the big frustration in getting into the Meruval tier and then die and having to fight in again and again and  die and fight in and die ..
[4:25 PM]
i get past the elite trolls and signatures but some always creep up from belhind and i don t know where the rendez vous with gandalf is so ...

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:25 PM
Maybe we can get it figured out

Arien  Valar — 01/29/2023 4:25 PM

Arien  Valar — 01/29/2023 4:39 PM
hmm i don t know it just came to my mind ... for obvious reasons alas .. these Mereval or Morvul as they are in singulare  .. are they pure  game inventions or is there a hint of them in tolkien i wonder?

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:40 PM
[4:40 PM]
She was a bat lady.
[4:40 PM]
Vampire types are mentioned, perhaps bat like folk as she was?

Arien  Valar — 01/29/2023 4:41 PM
[4:41 PM]
ah yes i forgot about her

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:41 PM
Werewolf types are also mentioned. Even Sauron did the wolf-out once.
[4:41 PM]
Luthien used Thuringwethil's bat fell (bat skin) to appear to be like her or her.
[4:42 PM]
One wonders if it was worn like a bear sark or um er not.

Sandalf13 — 01/29/2023 4:43 PM
The image of Beren as a wolf running towards Thangorodrim with Luthien (as a bat) hanging onto his

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:43 PM

Arien  Valar — 01/29/2023 4:43 PM
I d imagine maybe simmilar to the shaman coats of the native americas likely with the head still tached or shaped to be a hat maybe

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:44 PM
Maybe so

Ar-Pharazon-V — 01/29/2023 4:44 PM
I got the idea they used some kind of "magic" to actually appear as the wolf and bat in question.

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:44 PM
It does say Luthien used Thuringwethil's bat fell.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 01/29/2023 4:45 PM
Kinda like the Faceless in GoT.
[4:45 PM]
Well, yes, using their skins, but making them... fit more realistically, let's say.

Eonwλ Valar — 01/29/2023 4:45 PM
Aye, Phar. I've got the Lay of Leithien sticking in my mind right now, but aye, I'm remembering Luthien did something to make the disguises more convincing.

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:45 PM
The elves did have the ability to make illusion. It's not referred to often. Maybe more used in entertainment?
[4:46 PM]
This would be a useful occasion to do that.

Eonwλ Valar — 01/29/2023 4:46 PM
It wasn't used to deceive like Sauron/Morgoth did, no.

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:46 PM
But the disguise is a deception.

Eonwλ Valar — 01/29/2023 4:46 PM
Well, typically. Obviously the point here was to deceive, lol. (edited)

Ar-Pharazon-V — 01/29/2023 4:46 PM
Just deceive for a good cause

Arien  Valar — 01/29/2023 4:46 PM
deceive the Deceiver

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:46 PM
Not done as a rule, aye.

Eonwλ Valar — 01/29/2023 4:47 PM
I would put it this way.
[4:48 PM]
The "rule" was that Elves didn't do that, not that Elves couldn't or wouldn't, but that it wasn't the point of that particular skill.

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:48 PM

Eonwλ Valar — 01/29/2023 4:48 PM
Some Elves may have.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 01/29/2023 4:48 PM
The darker kind.

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:49 PM
Would be handy when needing to look nice for a party and just came out of the wild.

Eonwλ Valar — 01/29/2023 4:49 PM
The less noble kind. I wouldn't put it past Maeglin in his later years.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 01/29/2023 4:49 PM
Certainly his father.

Arien  Valar — 01/29/2023 4:49 PM
Depends on the purpose. As a part of a battle strategy

Eonwλ Valar — 01/29/2023 4:50 PM
Elves as a rule seem to be harder to fool as well. They seem to be able to read one another's intent pretty clearly, as I recall.

Varda — 01/29/2023 4:50 PM
That is why it would be better as entertainment. Just enjoy it.

The Two Towers, Chapter 7 "Helm's Deep"

There were no clouds overhead yet, but a heaviness was in the air; it was hot for the season of the year.
The rising son was hazy, and behind it, following it slowly up the sky, there was a growing darkness, as of a great storm moving out of the East.
And away in the North-west there seemed to be another darkness brooding about the feat of the Misty Mountains, a shadow that crept down slowly from the Wizard's Vale.
Gandalf dropped back to where Legolas rode beside Eomer.
"You have the keen eyes of your fair kindred, Legolas," he said: "and they can tell a sparrow from a finch a league off.
Tell me, can you see anything away yonder towards Isengard?"
"Many miles lie between," said Legolas, gazing thither and shading his eyes with his long hand.
"I can see a darkness.
There are shapes moving in it, great shapes far away upon the bank of the river; but what they are I cannot tell.
It is not mist or cloud that defeats my eyes: there is a veiling shadow that some power lays upon the land, and it marches slowly down stream. It is as if the twilight under endless trees were flowing downwards from the hills."
"And behind us comes a very storm of Mordor," said Gandalf. "It will be a black night."

For (non)flashgaming, several old but good badges this week, and is one of my favorites.
    Gragyriss, Captor of Princesses
A strategy game about dragon lifedevour lambs, grow stronger, raid settlements, fight weak humans, elves and undead, kidnap beautiful princesses

[7:13 PM]
A strategy/upgrade game about a dragon in a sort of base you need to upgrade, starting from grass to sheep and wolves until you hatch the dragon, then keep upgrading while fighting enemies around the map, and capturing the 3 princesses for a choice of buffs.
[7:13 PM]
It's all fairly self explanatory, and if you fail a fight, just upgrade more

Level 82 on the reward track! Getting closer.
[8:15 PM]
Had some good fun questing, and got the Death Knight class to level 21.
[8:16 PM]
Brawl is Lunar Blessings, where you choose a class and get a random deck, while also choosing one of 3 chinese constellation animals for a buff. I chose death knight, got lots of cheap minions, and the buff that gave all of them 3 extra health. Was good enough for a win
[8:17 PM]
[8:18 PM]
Made it to level 70, yay! Was allowed in the raids again, which went quite well, though my ilevel is still relatively low, which means so are my health and damage. Still, I wasn't as squishy as I'd expected.
[8:19 PM]
We cleared normal Vault of the Incarnates, all 8 bosses, on a single raidnight, and tonight we cleared 4 heroic bosses as well, including several first kills for us.
[8:20 PM]
Weekly is timewalks, which I got done on wednesday and thursday before our first raid of the week, to get some gear as well, and I got some upgrades from the normal raid, including a weapon.
[8:21 PM]
In all I ended up getting about 60 ilevels higher within 24 hours of getting to level 70, so quite a bit more powerful
[8:22 PM]
For our oldschool raids I went in with the Evoker for the first time this week, and sure enough, got 13 new mail appearances from that first night. It'll slow down after this, but still a good start.
[8:24 PM]
For questing I went deeper into the Azure Span, helping Kalecgos reach the Azure Oathstone and talking to a simulacrum of the deceased blue dragonqueen herself, Sindragosa. But while the Oathstone is secure, apparently we need to stabilize some leylines in the zone to get it to activate.
[8:26 PM]
Before I reached Kalecgos, however, I found myself on a side questline with some tuskarr, where I helped build a boat, getting it blessed by the spirits, and sailing it down the river rapids.
[8:27 PM]
After doing that wild ride a couple of times and finally figuring out a setting that put outlines around the fish required, I got the achievement to catch 40 fish along one ride, which gave me the Tuskarr Dinghy toy, allowing me to travel across any water's surface in a tuskarr boat
[8:29 PM]
And after those two questlines were done, I started to visit the new Elders for the Lunar Festival, spread around the Dragon Isles. In doing so I got my last experience to reach level 70, as mentioned above, and after the gearing and raiding was done I finished visiting those to get the Dragon Isles Elders achievementn as well.
[8:30 PM]
So now that I'm level 70, and gearing up and weekly quests is happening, I wanted to focus on the story backlog I've built up, including the old covenant campaigns from the previous expansion, but apparently it is quite important that I continue the main questlines in Azure Span and Thaldraszus to unlock a crafting reagent, which can be used to craft an important necklace, among other things.
[8:32 PM]
So I'm alternating the two goals! On the druid I'm going to do the main questlines in these last 2 zones, skipping the sidequests for now, while on the mage I'm questing through Bastion in order to set her up for the Revendreth covenant campaign.
[8:35 PM]
Alternating between quest chapters as defined by the story achievements, I've had the mage help out in an overrun garden in Bastion, while the druid chased down a tuskarr caravan only to be drafted in helping said caravan recover from a gnoll attack, and planning to take back their goods and prisoners.
[8:35 PM]
I'll continue that storyline next week, as I confront the Dragon Isles' gnolls for the first time. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Trading Post to see what goals I can go for in february, and decide on which items to get.
[8:35 PM]
And that's my report for the week!
