Varda — 12/31/2023 4:29 PM
Yep, 2024 is a Leap Year.  : )

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:30 PM
Yes. I mentioned to Varda yesterday and thought that I would mention it here as well. I am a member of the Geological Society of America (GSA, one of my professional organizations), and they have an online "Open Forum" for members to post news, geologic events, reports, and so on. Someone mentioned Middle-earth, so I submitted a post referring people from the GSA to Chapter Three of my book, the Geology of Middle-earth. I see no reason why my post will not make it past the site managers, so perhaps we will see some adventurous geologists looking at out website to check out my chapter. Who knows?

Varda — 12/31/2023 4:31 PM
Huzzah!

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:32 PM
I think I will post a reference to the Chapter in the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists "Outcrop" as well.

[4:35 PM]
On to
[4:35 PM]

top

Tolkien!

[4:35 PM]
Here's a quick one:
[4:35 PM]
In Return of the King. Treebeard and Galadriel say their goodbyes, and Galadriel remarks "Not in Middle-earth, nor until the lands that lie under the wave are lifted up again. Then in the willow-meads of Tasarinan, we may meet in the spring. Farewell!"
[4:36 PM]
.
[4:36 PM]
Soooo, lands under the waves will be lifted up again! Which lands might those be?

Ar-Pharazon-V — 12/31/2023 4:36 PM
On the first day of Numenor ♪
[4:37 PM]
Nah, Tasarinan was in Beleriand I believe.

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:37 PM
Wow Vardea! You hit the nail on  the head. I have often thought about that comment in terms of plate tectonics...suggesting that the "Great Sea" of the Third Age is more like a Cenozoic Western Interior Seaway (The Cannonball Sea) of North America....very shallow.
[4:38 PM]
Easily "uplifted" through minor plate tectonic activity.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 12/31/2023 4:38 PM
Well, Beleriand was sunk in the War of Wrath, but some bits were still sticking out of the water, so it can't have been that deep.

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:38 PM
Absolutely!

Eonwë Valar — 12/31/2023 4:38 PM
Shallow comparitively, I assume. Still deep enough for ships to go over.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 12/31/2023 4:38 PM
So at least the eastern part was relatively shallow.

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:39 PM
Yup. I have sailed the Aegean, the ADriatic, and the like....pretty shallow seaways at best...but still a few hundred feet is all you need to steam on.

Eonwë Valar — 12/31/2023 4:39 PM
Doesn't seem like anyone was peering over the prow going "Hey, there's my old house!" (edited)

Ar-Pharazon-V — 12/31/2023 4:39 PM
And it's said the Meneltarma in Numenor might be sticking out of the water as well.

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:39 PM
Supposedly Elendil could see that through the Palantir at Lindon.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 12/31/2023 4:42 PM
So unless the entire ocean between Valinor and Middle-earth was shallow, you'd probably just sail over some massive shallow bits.

Varda — 12/31/2023 4:42 PM
So Beleriand and Numenor could return in the future. Talk about hunting around for old treasures!

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:42 PM
Yes, geologically speaking. But to an elf and an Ent, time is not a problem, is that not so? (nicht wahr?)

Varda — 12/31/2023 4:43 PM
Of course if that doesn't happen until after the remaking of Arda, the treasures may be part of the regular minerals.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 12/31/2023 4:44 PM
I assumed the remaking would be more of a reboot than a restoration.

Eonwë Valar — 12/31/2023 4:44 PM
Aye. a Doriathrin coin might not make it through several thousand years of sitting buried under dirt and water.

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:44 PM
The salinity of shallow inland seas is often higher than that of deeper oceans. I wonder if the geochemistry of the Great Sea would impact the weathering and dissolution of the Elf/Man structures (and those of Morgoth as well) now below the sea.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 12/31/2023 4:45 PM
Is that a depth or a circulation thing, Sandalf? Because it wasn't exactly inland.

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:46 PM
As we speak (or write), I can see the Dakota Hogback to the west of me, butt up against the Rocky Mtn Front. The Dakota is the first beach that marked the inrushing Western Interior Seaway back in the Cretaceous. The next outcrop of the Dakota to the east is Antelope Park, in Lincoln, NE. It is subsurface all the way there...some 484 miles.
[4:47 PM]
Well...Tolkien sort of leaves it up to us to determine the width of the Great Sea. The entire Arctic Ocean is pretty shallow, and it is several hundreds of miles across...even thousands in a few directions.
[4:48 PM]
Uplifting Beleriand again as per Galadriel would pretty much required it to be an "inland" sea.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 12/31/2023 4:49 PM
If done tectonically.
[4:49 PM]
If it's just the Valar or Eru lifting a finger, it could very well be in the middle of the ocean. Or at least the coastal region for Beleriand.

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:50 PM
Very true....I am just a dumb geologist. Who am I to judge? (he he)
[4:51 PM]
I am not privy to the will of the Valar or of Eru himself.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 12/31/2023 4:53 PM
K, guess I'll be back in half an hour or so.. next year

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:54 PM
Happy New Year! Have you ever seen the ball drop in Times Square in New York City?

Varda — 12/31/2023 4:55 PM

[4:56 PM]
The new Arda is supposed to be a complete re-boot, done right, with all working on it together in song.

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:56 PM
I will check in later for Ar's report. Namarie Ar! I am meeting some friends for dinner tonight at a place called the Yak and Yeti....an all-you-can-eat Indian and Tibetan restaurant. It is so crowded, that we had to make reservations.

Varda — 12/31/2023 4:56 PM
No marring by Morgoth.

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:57 PM
And Elves and Men and Dwarves will all be reunited, I believe.

Varda — 12/31/2023 4:57 PM
May it be a fun dinner! All you can eat is the perfect serving. : )
[4:57 PM]
There is some discussion that what happens with Elves will depend somewhat on Men. Interesting thought.

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 4:58 PM
As Finrod Felagund thought, too.

Varda — 12/31/2023 4:59 PM
So, if there are Orc spirits, they might be cleaned up and rebooted in different bodies. Or would all the evil things go strictly to the Void to be dissipated? I need to do some more reading. : )
[4:59 PM]
Finrod is one of my favorite characters. : )

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 5:00 PM
Yes. Critics have noted that the Orcs represent a real problem for Tolkien. HJow can any form of (quasi) intelligent life be doomed to be unredeemable? Any as has been suggested, are not the Orcs only Elves and Men that Morgoth took and twisted for his own purposes? Hardly their fault, I assume.

Varda — 12/31/2023 5:01 PM
But a mix and a twisting. Take a fair bit of clean-up!

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 5:01 PM
No question. But irredeedmable? I do not think so.

After-meeting!

[5:02 PM]
This is a fantasy, not our real world. So if JRRT decides they are irredeemable, they are in trouble!

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 5:03 PM
We may never know Tolkien's real beliefs about this....

Varda — 12/31/2023 5:04 PM
He probably went back and forth on it himself. He used a mix of other mythology and folklore mixed into Christianity, and a great deal of his own work.
[5:05 PM]
If a mixed Uruk-hai (part orc twisted from either man or elf plus man) had to be cleaned up, it might become two people?
[5:06 PM]
The need to add man to make an orc able to handle sunlight really pushes the idea that they did not originate as man.

Eonwë Valar — 12/31/2023 5:06 PM
I doubt that. being part Elf and part Man doesn't meaning you've got two spirits vying for control in you. Kind hard to extract and repair a whole apple from applesauce.

Varda — 12/31/2023 5:07 PM
Aye. Could end up with vapor or those barely existing souls.
Maybe they could power future butterflies. ; )

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 5:08 PM
Maybe I am just a softie, but I always felt sorry for the Orcs.

Eonwë Valar — 12/31/2023 5:08 PM
Based on what I've read from LotR, Sil, and HoME, I think the best way to see the orcs is essentially three "generations":
[5:09 PM]
First would be lesser Maiar serving Morgoth who took a hideous physical shape (or were even just incapable of taking a "beautiful" shape, just like Sauron became unable to eventually).

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 5:10 PM
They did display some redeeming qualities: loyalty to a cause, willingness to fight for their "beliefs," a dedication to fighting through to the end....not such bad things in humans...and elves.
and Espriti d'Corps.
"We are the frighting Uruk-hai!" and so on.

Eonwë Valar — 12/31/2023 5:11 PM
If this group... bred... they would seemingly become bound to their physical bodies so long as their children were also alive (see: Melian) unless slain.

Varda — 12/31/2023 5:11 PM
Not exactly loyal although they had little else to go to. They spoke of wanting to set up bandit gangs independently of Sauron if they could have gotten away with it.

Eonwë Valar — 12/31/2023 5:12 PM
Second would be the introduction of the Elvish strain when Morgoth took prisoners. I don't think we need to get into details on how that would've happened.

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 5:12 PM
That was some of them, of course. I realize that my comments are pretty broad-brushed, but still....

Varda — 12/31/2023 5:12 PM
Orcs did breed in the manner of other beings of Arda, aye. That would be the ones after the first were built.

Eonwë Valar — 12/31/2023 5:13 PM
This would again further tie any of those first generation Orcs to their bodies.

Varda — 12/31/2023 5:13 PM
Apparently original orcs or something called orcs were made by corrupting elves that ran from Orome, so they started as being the less brave and/or less curious of the elves.

Eonwë Valar — 12/31/2023 5:14 PM
Third would be the introduction of the "Mannish strain", which seemingly had been somehow lost to time, but Saruman "rediscovered" it. Again, I don't think we need to imagine how this might've happened.

Varda — 12/31/2023 5:14 PM
Fell Beasts were bred from other creatures and fed foul things and trained. Some kind of mixing going on there.

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 5:14 PM
I agree with Eonwe on that one. Some things are better left unknown.

Eonwë Valar — 12/31/2023 5:15 PM
In this case, unsaid is more like it.

Varda — 12/31/2023 5:15 PM
We don't have to go into details to work out some things.
Anyway, enjoy your New Year's Eve meals and the fireworks at midnight!
[5:16 PM]
In a neat bit of trivia, while we know drabbles are 100 words exactly, 50 words exactly is termed a dribble. : )

Sandalf13 — 12/31/2023 5:18 PM
dribbling and drabbling...

https://www.kongregate.com/games/FractalSunrise/knight-errant is a chess puzzle game where you play a chess knight, making your way across a world/maze of chess squares using the knight's move. (edited)

    Knight-errant
    A chess knight#39s little adventure.

[9:15 PM]
Your job is to follow and take down the opposing chess pieces one by one, ultimately freeing the princess.
[9:18 PM]
A very relaxed game, good music, all turn-based so no pressure, and infinite lives if you fail what I can only describe as a duel.

Diablo 4:
Spent more time on the seasonal blood necromancer.
[9:30 PM]
I completed the required minimum objectives for chapter 3 of the season journey, only missing the Cathedral of Light, the capstone dungeon for tier 2 difficulty. But that's level 50 minimum, and she's in her early 40s, so after a few attempts wherein I was way over my head, I decided to take chapter 3 for complete, and continue the season's questline.
[9:31 PM]
So I cleared a bunch of Blood Harvest event stuff, and finally faced down the big boss vampire, Lord Zir, completing the seasonal quests.
[9:33 PM]
After that I had a few days remaining for the Midwinter Blight event, so I took her through the initial quests there, unlocking the title and achievement for defeating the Redcloaked Horror, and getting enough event currency to buy the unique legendary aspect.
There's also a ton of transmogs to get but they're much more expensive, so I'm assuming they'll be back next year. If not, I'm not a huge fan of diablo 4 appearances anyway.
[9:36 PM]
So now, though she's only level 43, she's pretty much done. Got what I wanted out of the season and out of the winter event. Time to focus on other things until season 3 starts in about a month, for which I'm sure I'll be making a new character.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 12/31/2023 9:36 PM
We've no idea what the theme will be, so I don't know which of my WoW characters I'll recreate for this one, with which class and spec. We'll see!
[9:38 PM]
Hearthstone:
Level 76 on the reward track now. Getting pretty slow again.
[9:39 PM]
Opened some more packs, and got 2 legendaries: Spurfang, a raptor minion, and the signature version of MC Blingtron. Signature legendaries are quite a rare sight!
[9:40 PM]
Tavern Brawl is the classic New Year Bash: Two players working together from opposite sides of the board to survive long enough to hold off crazed dancers, hang up decorations and defeat the pinata.
[9:41 PM]
Matches can be rather close, but the decks are fixed: One person is a druid, and one a rogue, and when you know the combos and cards that go around it shouldn't be too hard, as long as the other player does too
Some luck needed though.
[9:42 PM]
Warcraft Rumble:
Collection level made it just to 24. The mini levels required seem to cap at 50 per collection level now, but levels are getting harder to get.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 12/31/2023 9:43 PM
Got the new mini unlocked from seasonal guild chests, the Chimaera, which started at uncommon.
[9:44 PM]
Also got 2 other ucommons upgraded: The polymorph spell, and the very useful beast family leader, Hogger.
I've not seen the right talents for them on the grid yet, though.
[9:45 PM]
I also saved up enough gold to buy the Rare quality Rivendare upgrade from the grid, rather than one star at a time. Adds a level to him, and will do another when I buy a talent, but I already have the most useful one anyway, so it doesn't matter which of the 2 remaining I get.
[9:48 PM]
It's beast family week now, so that means Hogger. Got a few dungeon levels cleared/rewarded with his team already, and got 4 fights done in the sigil campaign: Goreclaw, Tabetha, the Darkmist Broodqueen, and Jaina Proudmoore herself. All that remains in Dustwallow is an annoying dragon, but I'm sure that's just a matter of time (and possibly a few levels).
[9:49 PM]
And no, it's not Onyxia, that dragonlady will be a raid at the end of the campaign
WoW:
[9:50 PM]
Winter Veil continuing! Got a few days left. No luck with getting the weapon illusion from the Greench quest, though.

Ar-Pharazon-V — 12/31/2023 9:51 PM
Got 2 new toys from the winter veil gifts under the tree, the Winter Veil Socks, which leave a wintery trail when you walk, and the Junior Timekeeper's Racing Belt, which spawns rings for friends to race through, similar to the dragonriding races.
[9:53 PM]
I got all my alts to the winter veil tree as well, getting some achievements, enjoying the atmosphere and music, and opening the gifts. First time for all my horde alts. Calsjona the goblin warrior couldn't make it though, since she's still on the Lost Isles. She'll take part next year, as will the horde alts I've not created yet, and maybe even the new Earthen race depending on when the new expansion comes out
[9:54 PM]
Weekly quest is battlegrounds; I found out that the fastest way to get the 4 wins is queueing up for Battleground Blitz brawls. They're fast-paced versions of random battlegrounds, with pretty short queues, so it's recommended if you want to grind those wins!
[9:55 PM]
Other than the winter veil trips, no alting done this week; but with Diablo 4 season done, next up will be the mage again, continuing in Revendreth.
Assuming I have enough time next week, with the move happening around this time; probably officially moving over some time in the week.
[9:56 PM]
And that's my report for the week!
Namarie :)
