Before-meeting

Varda — Yesterday at 4:00 PM
Aiya

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:00 PM
Aiya!

Varda — Yesterday at 4:00 PM
@Bounder @Guild-friend Rejoice! Time to pop into the Valar Guild meeting_place to say hi and chat about gaming and Tolkien!
[4:01 PM]
Aiya Phar : )

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:01 PM
Aiya All! A gray day here in Thornton, the high got only to 75 Grad F.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:01 PM
Sounds chilly! ; )
Aiya Sandalf : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:01 PM
A bit stormy over here, lots of rain this week.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:01 PM
It is. Quite a change from last week....Fall is on the horizon.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:02 PM
Sunny and pleasant here.
Fun how different it can be for all of us.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:02 PM
It's a big world

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:02 PM
I hope your tomatoes are thriving...lots of flowers on mine, but few tomatoes...I hope that they have time to grow and ripen. The tomato season usually ends here around end September...about 50 days from now.
[4:03 PM]
Any flooding, Ar?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:03 PM
Not that I'm aware.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:03 PM
Thank goodness. Floods are a mess all around.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:04 PM
No tomatoes, some flowers. Had lots of peppers but slowing down.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:04 PM
The only good  crops I have had so far are beets and cukes. But how many beets and cukes can one eat at one time?

Varda — Yesterday at 4:04 PM
Pickling time!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:05 PM
If you have a good recipe for either, send them to me via E-mail, or whatever is easiest...with complete instructions.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:05 PM
Might try an internet search.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:05 PM
One taketh a cup of water...

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:05 PM
I can do that too. I suspect cukes are easier to pickle than beets.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:06 PM
If I ever wrote down recipes, I'd totally do it in ye olde english.
Feels more authentic.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:07 PM
Be funny anyway : )

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:07 PM
Aiya all

Varda — Yesterday at 4:07 PM
Aiya Sunshine : )

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:07 PM
Aiya Arien!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:08 PM
Aiya!

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:08 PM
honeycakes :D?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:08 PM
Get ye a dab of honey.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:08 PM
What about a dollop?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:09 PM
Acceptable.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:10 PM
I'd say we were already in Membership news : )
Any more cool news?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:10 PM
For membership, I be home after a short vacation from tuesday to saturday. Yes, in the rain :0

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:10 PM
I cannot resist...I have finally found the bank where the Ents bank....but what about the Entwives?
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/98425690877104128/1137855269515309086/Screenshot_2023-08-06_at_15-09-29_ent_bank_denver_-_Google_Search.png

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:10 PM
But it was fun anyway. Saw a few sights, did some swimming and walking, played some games.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:11 PM
Ent is probably like Man, as in the race name as well as the gender name.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:11 PM
Did you find any good coffee houses?

Varda — Yesterday at 4:11 PM
So it's good for both. And the entlings.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:11 PM
Can't say I've looked

Varda — Yesterday at 4:11 PM
Grats on fun!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:11 PM
I think you cann see an Ent getting ready to walk in on the right...

Varda — Yesterday at 4:12 PM
My house is good for coffee. : )
A mere sapling of an ent, and aye. : )
Funny : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:12 PM
Seems to be walking at ent-pace, anyway.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:12 PM
it is now  9 days to go until my real life meet with my wow classic guild

Varda — Yesterday at 4:12 PM
True that.
Sounds fun, Arien : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:12 PM
Yay Arien! Enjoy

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:12 PM
Do you meet online, or in person?

Varda — Yesterday at 4:13 PM
We'd have quite a time trying to do that.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:13 PM
i won t be here that sunday .. that will be the 19th of August

Varda — Yesterday at 4:13 PM
A wonderful excuse. : )

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:13 PM
in person Sandalf

Varda — Yesterday at 4:13 PM
Real life means in person

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:13 PM
Fantastisch!

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:13 PM
in Prague in fact

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:13 PM
Drink some Pilsner for me....

Varda — Yesterday at 4:13 PM
as in happens inside reality instead of computer interaction
Wonder if they have good chocolate milk...
./duck

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:15 PM
what is reality i wonder? according to plato there is not only one reality but different layers of reality and sometimes , so it is claimed the layers can overlap a bit
that is how we get esp takes off the philosopher hat

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:15 PM
Is he the same one who compared our reality to shadows on a cave wall?

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:16 PM
That is exactly what I was recalling, too.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:16 PM
sounds like it

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:16 PM
I wonder if Plato found any time to spend in a cave.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:17 PM
You can philosophize anywhere

@Ar-Pharazon-V
Is he the same one who compared our reality to shadows on a cave wall?
Shelob — Yesterday at 4:17 PM
Not a bad comparison to be honest. Our perception is so limited and our knowledge so trivial, our reality might as well be shadows on a wall!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:17 PM
Even in a cave! I should know.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:17 PM
We see the shadows on the monitor, but the real people casting those shadows are far greater. : )

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:18 PM
I also like the analosy of the totality of our existence being little ore than smoke in the wind.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:18 PM
think of people who cant leave their house according to illness or don t manage to communicate to someone in person for some reason .. for them a mmo is the only way to interact (normally) with someone else

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:18 PM
analogy

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:18 PM
Yes, Shelob, I believe that was the point :)

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:18 PM
Aiya Shelob!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:18 PM
And Aiya!

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:18 PM
aiya Shelob :)

@Ar-Pharazon-V
Yes, Shelob, I believe that was the point
Shelob — Yesterday at 4:18 PM
Couldn't really surmise that from the previous conversation.
[4:19 PM]
Also, Aiya! :)

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:19 PM
or who in a computergame are free to be what they never can t  be in our so called real life

Varda — Yesterday at 4:19 PM
Aiya Spidey : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:19 PM
Fair enough. I didn't elaborate enough on the analogy, I guess

@Arien  Valar
or who in a computergame are free to be what they never can t be in our so called real life
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:20 PM
plays a bear in multiple games I'm sure I don't know what you mean!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:20 PM
There was a GREAT deal on Spyder socks at Costco last week....I bought some, and was thinking of Shelob when I saw the spider on the socks.

Shelob — Yesterday at 4:20 PM
Look Phar! Your nickname has taken hold! Even the Lady of Stars now calls me Spidey.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:20 PM
yay!

Varda — Yesterday at 4:20 PM
We do have folk and have in the past that have/had grave illnesses and injuries, but were able to interact more normally in-game.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:20 PM
:)
see aye that s what i mean

Varda — Yesterday at 4:21 PM
Computer gaming used to be much more private. Now a person can be found out more easily.
Agreeing. RL examples in our own group.
Ioreth-V said hi. She has cancer again and it's not looking good. But she gets to play her music in bands and interact in LotRO. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:22 PM
Oof.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:22 PM
Sad.

Shelob — Yesterday at 4:22 PM
I believe the proper term for that is... !@#$%.

Treebeard — Yesterday at 4:22 PM
Hello

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:22 PM
:(

Shelob — Yesterday at 4:22 PM
Aiya Fangorn!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:22 PM
I was holding back.
Aiya!

Shelob — Yesterday at 4:22 PM
Long time no see!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:22 PM
Aiya Fangorn!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:23 PM
One of my best friends from childhood was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. Worst form and gradation. We'd grown apart, but it was reason for me to get back in touch. It's very harsh, I hope I can be there for her.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
I hope that you can also.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
Sorry to hear

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
We all gotta go some day, but at this age, in such a way... it's not good.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
Aiya Fangorn : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
She's got a 2 year old son, too.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
Few really good ways.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
True. But there's bad, and there's bad.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:25 PM
It never is. I suppose that one lesson we all can draw from such sorrow in life is that one must strive to enjoy every day on this Middle-earth of ours.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:25 PM
Also, people head into gaming and computer interactions to escape the craziness, including politics and other arguments, for a form of peace here.

Treebeard — Yesterday at 4:25 PM
Our paths meet again.  Best wishes to those of us with hard paths to follow, by choice or by happenstance

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:25 PM
Very true, Sandalf :)

Varda — Yesterday at 4:26 PM
Get away from working, awful weather, lots of reasons to be here.
Get to meet friends and family even if separated by great distance.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:26 PM
Or just addiction ;)

Varda — Yesterday at 4:27 PM
Addiction too. : )
We've had a number of members use us for case studies in computer addiction. : )

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:27 PM
Aiya Fangorn :)

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:27 PM
On that note, anytime that any of you come to Colorado, you have a place to stay with me...including free tours of the high country, a trip over Loveland Pass, and so on....I would be glad to have you visit.

Treebeard — Yesterday at 4:27 PM
We should meet for a Raid or Instance at a level of common capability when time permits

Varda — Yesterday at 4:27 PM
Sounds fabulous, Sandalf. Thank you. : )

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
great idea Sandal :) thank you

Varda — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
drags everyone into Landroval

Treebeard — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
Places to stay and take a break from the riggers of travel are welcome indeed

Varda — Yesterday at 4:29 PM
Oh the puns. : )  [Note: Fangorn had to travel a lot for work.]
I was kind of waiting for Eonwe to get past Real Life to join us, but will do the report he gave us online.

Gaming:

World of Warcraft:
[4:30 PM]
Which brings to mind,
Sandalf, did you get to start on World of Warcraft? What server?

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:31 PM
No. It is on my list of games to look at when I go in for my next tutoring session at Wright Farms...the tech gal is really high class and very helpful for an amateur gamer like me.
I want to continue with LoTRO for the forseeable future.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:32 PM
That would be great! Landroval server awaits. : )
Did the first lesson help any?
[4:33 PM]
Wondering whether to recommend such things for others.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
Yes. Quite a bit.. I got a bit of fluency in with the teacher's help, and learned some really neat ways to move my character wound with the mouse dial.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
Very good!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
around

Varda — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
If you can move, you can do most things you need. : )

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
Now all I have to do is find the notes I wrote down at my last session, and review them before I go in for my next visit.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:36 PM
Try them out in-game with no one watching so you feel free to experiment, make mistakes.
It needs to become automatic to your hands, like driving.
It's a lot like driving a new body/car. : )
Anyway...

Here are the release notes for Update 36.2, released on Wednesday, August 2nd, 2023.

[4:45 PM] [Note: below is the short version by Varda, including quotes]
Bugs, changes, new stuff.
[4:45 PM]
Reward Track season 7:
    Begins Aug 16 at 10 A.M.
Delvings:
Fixed an issue where Delving Mission quests on Tier 8 counted toward the weekly delving quest "Delve Deepest (Weekly)", and 6-person Tier 8 Delvings did not.
[4:46 PM]
(pardon the next part as LotRO shouted this, and it's a copy/paste. Yes it's not polite but they are pushing the warning)
[4:47 PM]
NOTE: DELVE DEEPEST (WEEKLY) HAS BEEN VERSIONED. THIS QUEST WILL RESET ANY PROGRESS MADE ON UPDATE.
Farmer's Faire:
Aug 17 until 3 A.M. Sept 7, including new rewards.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
I like seeing "versioned" as a word.

Varda — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
heh, aye. : )

Carry-alls:
[4:48 PM]
Small and Medium Essence and Tracery Carry-alls can now hold up to 400 of any given essence, tracery, or enhancement rune.
Large Essence and Tracery Carry-alls can now hold up to 1000 of any given essence, tracery, or enhancement rune.
[4:49 PM]
So we peasants with our carry-alls rejoice! Those things are expensive, but great for handling inventory problems and quick swaps in Shared Storage with our alts.
[4:50 PM]
That's all from me.
on general news.
But for the past week in the LotRO kin branches:
[4:51 PM]
Landroval kin branch:
Eonwe
Fangorn
Nar
Pengolodh
Varda

Crickhollow kin branch:
Eonwe
Fangorn
Varda

Treebeard kin branch:*
Varda
[4:51 PM]
Fangorn and I do a lot of grouping.
If anyone else needs the Steepset stuff (Zidir-nesad), you might want to look us up.
Also do lots of other stuff. : )
[4:52 PM]
Eowyn/Cenedra and Fangorn/Treebeard are currently gaming in Starcraft 2. : )
Any other gaming news of a general nature or guild-related?
I'm kind of pushing the time here, heh.

Any other membership news, suggestions, requests, invitations needed?

Oh shiny!

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 4:55 PM
the old that is strong does not wither
deep roots are not reached by the frost
From the ashes a fire shall be woken
a light from the shadows shall spring
renewed shall be blade that was broken

Line of Kings gets knocked down, but it gets up again, ain't nobody gonna keep it down.

Thank you

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:00 PM
Just so long as you don't stand on the soup box.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:00 PM
It's a big soap box. We can all step on it and tap dance.
Gavel, no!!! splup

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:00 PM
Don't spit in the soup...we all have to ear. Lyndon Baines Johnson

Varda — Yesterday at 5:00 PM

[5:01 PM]
Ok, this topic is stewardship. I found two strong examples in one scene. Maybe y'all can think of more to add.

[5:02 PM]
Return of the King, "Minas Tirith"

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:02 PM

Varda — Yesterday at 5:02 PM
Thanks!

Gandalf to Denethor, concerning stewardship:
Quote:
"Unless the king should come again?" said Gandalf. "Well, my lord Steward, it is your task to keep some kingdom still against that event, which few now look to see. In that task you shall have all the aid that you are pleased to ask for.
But I will say this: the rule of no realm is mine, neither of Gondor nor any other, great or small. But all worthy things that are in peril as the world now stands, those are my care.
And for my part, I shall not wholly fail of my task, though Gondor should perish, if anything passes through this night that can still grow fair or bear fruit and flower again in days to come. For I also am a steward. Did you not know?"
And with that he turned and strode from the hall with Pippin running at his side.
End Quote.
[5:03 PM]
I'm done. : )

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:05 PM
I love that scene chuckles i just can imagine it and Denethor looking enraged after Gandalf as he rushes out of the throne room with pippin running after him

Varda — Yesterday at 5:05 PM
Come back with my hobbit! I just got him!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:06 PM
That "Did you not know" seems rather passive aggressive. Gandalf picked up more of that after turning white, I think.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:07 PM
Gandalf was more aggressive as the White, as he would have to operate as nearly the only Istar. At least he had some help from Radagast, but the rest were a loss for what he needed to do.
[5:08 PM]
Radagast became a specialist in his stewardship, mostly taking care of animals and letting the rest of life fend for itself. Unless another Istar specifically called on him.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
Indeed, that is also stewardship. It can be large or small

Varda — Yesterday at 5:09 PM
Aye. It was stewardship of the critters.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:09 PM
the question is whether Denethor really would have allowed Aragorn to take up the kingship in gondor again had he lived until then

Varda — Yesterday at 5:10 PM
Could have been a "civil" war.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:10 PM
I personally think he was rather fond of the power in time

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:10 PM
I agree...but that is part of the tragedy of Denethor....
He was torn in many different directions at the time of the War...

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
Aragorn came brandishing a sword, a banner, allies, a lot of folk from southern Gondor, and he had the Rohirrim on his side as well. I think the majority of the populace would've welcomed him back with open arms, especially with his healing touch. Denethor might not have had much choice.
People are impressed by such things :)

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:12 PM
aye
[5:13 PM]
but he also came with a load of howling undead so .. i wonder

Varda — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
We know that some in Gondor would obey Denethor even to the point we saw at the pyre.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
Undead were gone at that point in the books

Varda — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
The undead at Gondor were just movie, not book. : )

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
Only the southern areas would've seen the army of the dead.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
Yes, and they still came along with Aragorn.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Still, would've won him the support of those areas.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
They only had the ability to give fear, useful against the Corsairs.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Yup. I was just going to add that too...I Was busy looking up a quote that reminds the reader how much Denethor resembled Aragorn....

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
oh really .. but it did make sense somehow .. alas

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Here is it:
[5:15 PM]
"Pippin saw his carven face with its proud bones and skin like ivory, and the long curved nose between the dark deep eyes; and he was reminded not so much of Boromir as Aragonn."
[5:16 PM]
Denethor was of high Numenorean lineage as well....I think that perhaps the "good" part of Denethor was at war with the "bad" part of Denethor within himself. Which would have won out, if Aragorn had returned to Gondor and Denethor was still alive?  I think Tolkien leaves that decision to us. And therein lies the Shakespearian tragedy of Denethor.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:18 PM
Denethor is an interesting character.
[5:19 PM]
His mind had been poisoned with despair by Sauron, or he would have been quite different.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:19 PM
I can just see him nervously in the throne room, chewing cherries while Aragorn makes his way through the city.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:19 PM
It had been going on a long time.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:20 PM
I think that Jackson did Denethor a very grave injustice with his portrayal of him in the movies....see Chapter Five.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:20 PM
He continued wearing war gear under his robe. I don't think he was weak.
[5:20 PM]
Agreed.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:20 PM
Not at all.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:20 PM
Also awful character assassination of Faramir. And no way Frodo showed the Ring to the Nazgul.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:21 PM
"You want it? Come and claim it!"

Varda — Yesterday at 5:21 PM
But I digress. : )

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:21 PM
I do not think thatJackson like the Stewards of Gondor....

Varda — Yesterday at 5:21 PM
Use for a movie plot.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:21 PM
Hmm, tried to take out some ambiguity. Make it an absolute good thing for Aragorn to take the reins.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:22 PM
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms;
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lin’d,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper’d pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well sav’d, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion;
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:22 PM
Who, by the way, did reject the Ring at the first chance he got. At least, in the movie.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:23 PM
Shakespeare.
[5:23 PM]
Aragorn had plenty of opportunity to take the Ring, and did not.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:26 PM
sorry  I could not resist that Varda .. I was looking for a different quote but i couldn t find it where Shakespeare basically sais that the spectator may judge the play himself whether good or bad but he might at least pay respect or applause to the efforts of the actor
but it s not so unfitting either

Varda — Yesterday at 5:27 PM
No need to be sorry. : )
It went with the chat.
[5:28 PM]
The other Istari also did stewardships, but not as planned.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:28 PM
Shakespears uses the same idea in his quote about  life:

Varda — Yesterday at 5:28 PM
And mostly away from the One Ring story so we saw very little, unfortunately.
[5:29 PM]
Radagast cut his stewardship down to the animals (includes birds, obviously).
The Blue Wizards were sidelined to the East by Saruman, their boss.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:29 PM
(paraphrased from memory) "Life is but a poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." And that quote is the source of the title of the famous novel by William Faulkner "The Sound and the Fury."

Varda — Yesterday at 5:29 PM
But Saruman was drawn into the hypnotoad of the Palantir, same as Denethor, worse really.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:30 PM
Denethor was TOO STRONG to be subdued to the will of Sauron. Let me find the quote.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:30 PM
: )
[5:31 PM]
Does that mean Denethor had stronger hope/will than Saruman?
Saruman may have had less ability to handle Sauron's lies as he was used to Valinor.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:32 PM
I think that Tolkien intended for the reader to think that Denethor was, in fact, stronger than Saruman in that regard.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:32 PM
Saruman was too much like Sauron, probably didn't help. Denethor was motivated by love and grief to look into the Palantir.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:33 PM
Denethor was human after all

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:34 PM
Denethor had recently lost his wife, and he clearly loved her at least.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:34 PM
Sorry...I will have to search for the quote later. I know that I used it in Chapter FIve. Denethor was too strong to be subdued by Sauron through the Palantir.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:36 PM
I recall Denethor was strong enough to leave a permanent impression on the palantir himself, on his death.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:36 PM
My whole conceit is that Denethor was modeled after Macbeth....a very human character that we can identify with, because we share his/their humanity. Aragorn and the  like is a whole archetype above the rest of us mere mortals.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:36 PM
I seem to remember that Aragorn or Gandalf explained it that way .. because Denethor could not be subdued Sauron decided to make use of his strong feelings and twist him in a way that might work for him

Varda — Yesterday at 5:37 PM
Sauron showed him truth, but in a light that made it look hopeless.
Corsair ships were coming. They held Aragorn and allies, but all Denethor was shown was the coming of enemy ships. That sort of thing.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:38 PM
The devil has no need for lies, when the truth will do...

[5:38 PM]
Omission from a story can twist it quite well.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:39 PM
A bit of omission, a bit of timing. A bit of ominous music
[5:40 PM]
Easy to make the truth look bad!

Varda — Yesterday at 5:40 PM
Aye : )
[5:41 PM]
Aragorn is what a human can be like if guided by hope.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:41 PM
A bit of wisdom helps.

Varda — Yesterday at 5:41 PM
Denethor was succumbing to despair.
[5:41 PM]
Aye, healthy helping. : )
[5:42 PM]
Training in the right way, too.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:42 PM
Being raised by a mentor with 6000 years of experience, yep.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:44 PM
Ecthelion was no slouch. He did a lot to strengthen Gondor against the coming onslaught of Sauron, that he thought he would see in his time..he taught his son Denethor. Going even a bit further back, Turgon was a capable ruler as well. Denethor's immediate forefathers were good men and good strategic thinkers.
[5:45 PM]
Tolkien says little to nothing about Ecthelion's wife....Denethor's mother. I wonder what kind of a person she was.

Arien  Valar — Yesterday at 5:48 PM
Finduilas of Amroth

Varda — Yesterday at 5:48 PM
Wife?

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:48 PM
That was Denethor's wife....I was wondering about his mother.

Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:49 PM
I must be off.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:49 PM
Finduilas was a tragic figure too....just like the original Finuilas in the Children of Hurin.

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:41 PM
So. A busy week ahead for me, and I leave for a three day trip to Lincoln on Thursday to see my grandkids. I should be back in Thornton in time for our meeting on Sunday, I hope.
Namarie!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:41 PM
Ah, namarie  You can read back later!

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:41 PM
Will do! Tschüßi!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:46 PM
Anyway, accelerator is a mouse-only game that has you move and steer through an endless tunnel, dodging obstacles and constantly accelerating.
[9:47 PM]
For every 100 speed you reach, you unlock it as a starting speed so you can get further and further while skipping the speeds you've beaten.
[9:49 PM]
There's multiple difficulties, with splits and hard curves being added in harder modes, if you want that extra challenge.
So see how far you can get

Blizzard gaming:
[9:51 PM]
I've not had time for either Diablo 4 or Hearthstone. I know Hearthstone's new expansion is out, and I'm sure there's a new tavern brawl as well, but I've not seen it yet, and will try it out on tuesday instead, as the last day before the one after that comes out. But can't comment on it yet!
WoW:
[9:52 PM]
Raiding continues, as we're now fully focusing on heroic Sarkareth. I'm sure we'll be extending lockouts soon. Let's see how long it takes from here!
[9:53 PM]
New trading post is up, and I've started collecting tender. It helped to already have exalted with aldor/scryers from expansions past, since that got me some points from the start.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:55 PM
Not quite sure what I'll be spending it on. There's a toy which I'm not sure if I've already got it, and a new mount which should be fun. Other than that, saving up for the next few months for the armaments, I suppose.
[9:56 PM]
Weekly quest is arena skirmishes, for which I ended up doing 7 last night, so I can do 1 a night for the rest of the reset. That was the part of the WoW post-vacation catch-up I dreaded the most, so I'm glad it went rather smooth
[9:57 PM]
Did the megadungeon again, unlocking the Infinite Scales for the Proto-drake. I think there's only one or two dragonriding mounts I don't have them on yet, so it won't be long.
[9:58 PM]
The quantum item was an offhand this time, apparently from Hellfire Citadel. A bit of a waste I suppose, since raid drops are more farmable. But that's okay! There'll be more.
Bought the Ukraine charity pack, including a golden retriever pup pet called Sunny!
[9:59 PM]
As it reminded me of our old golden retriever called Hunter, I just couldn't resist, and it's for a good cause as well. So I called it Sunter and am enjoying its company
[10:01 PM]
But that's not all I bought! After the umptieth gearstore mail emphasizing the Ardenweald pepe plush I was interested in, I decided to go for it.
https://eu.gear.blizzard.com/products/wowcpl0005-world-of-warcraft-pepe-ardenweald-20cm-plush represents my favorite zone, and in its full 20 cm glory I'm sure I'll find a space for him in my room somewhere

Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 10:02 PM
Oh, and I got honor level 113 during the arena skirmishes as well.
[10:04 PM]
No alting this week, and it might take a bit longer; with the time-limited Kalimdor Cup coming up, with its currency and achievement for getting all the races on gold, I decided to finally start collecting dragonriding glyphs, using the dragon's radar and the achievement tracker to scour my way through the Dragon Isles.
[10:05 PM]
I've already gotten enough tonight to upgrade my vigor regeneration once for both ground-state and high speed, so that'll seriously help getting all the rest as well. Should be a fun project ]
And that's my report for the week!

Varda — Today at 10:40 AM
Power went out last night. Came back early this morning. Hi again!
Thanks, Phar.
[10:41 AM]
Enjoy your trip and grandkids, Sandalf!
[10:43 AM]
Thanks for the Jimmy Durante clip!
[10:44 AM]
I do remember him, but wasn't a big watcher of TV and movies while growing up. Still got a smattering. : )

Varda — Today at 10:49 AM
Funny thing is how many of the younger folk do know a lot of the old shows, thanks to re-runs! Not a bad thing, more variety over time.
