Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:14 PM
It could've been alot more fun if the road crossing were named

Eve:
Pallando has some new for us. All yours, Pallando.
Pallando-Valar — Yesterday at 4:28 PM
The latest Eve story arc is just about to kick off. The last few
weeks have seen fragments of data showing up across space and being
found. These fragments of data have been put together to reveal
three videos; two reveal new destroyers to come from the Angels and
the Guristas, and one that appears to be showing a new faction.
We've also been told during the Alliance Tournament broadcast today
that there's more to come next week as the story arc builds up
steam, and some big reveals at Fanfest.
I have some copies of the incomplete videos which I'll post here

Speaking of the AT, today saw the final matches for Alliance
Tournament XIX, which has been going over this weekend and last. In
it, the Tuskers blew a 2-0 lead to see Fraternity take their first
ever AT victory in the best of 5 grand finals, which was an absolute
nail-biter of a run, with every match hard fought.
[4:29 PM]

Last call for gaming news, then on to Tolkien.
[4:38 PM]
Ok then, here we go.

Tolkien:
[4:39 PM]
The topic today is going to be a rather
open-ended, so let's see what you all come up with.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:42 PM
One of the things that has amused me lately is to look into the
little things in Tolkien's works, the small touches that are easy to
overlook as commonplace. The things that one tends to think "Of
course they did that" or "Of course they had that" when one gives
much thought to it at all.
[4:43 PM]
Sometimes they just happen to stand out for one reason or another.
For example, the Hobbits had tubs. One of Fëanor's sons in HoME is
mentioned as having braided hair. Elves had cushions and guitars in
Book of Lost Tales.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:43 PM
So tell me....how did the Hobbits get tea? It was a very favorite
drink of theirs, yet the cultivation of tea occurs in areas far to
the south of The Shire. So: how and where did they get tea?
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:44 PM
So my invitation to you is to pick out those tiny things that you
may notice now and then in reading, that you have had a similar
reaction.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:44 PM
Pipeweed tea.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:45 PM
They must've grown some themselves.
I hope not, Phar.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:45 PM
Not likely...we once tried tobacco to make "tea" when I was in
College, and it was TERRIBLE.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
I feel my throat spasming by the thought of it!
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
But tea is not native to England, the land on which The Shire is
modelled/based/represents, or whatever.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:46 PM
They may have brought it with them. Elves brought seeds with them
when they went to Aman, and brought stuff back when they came from
Aman.
[4:47 PM]
Or trade with Dwarves.
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
The rangers maybe brought some
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
There's no tea like Numenor-grown tea.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
Tea is an aromatic beverage prepared by pouring hot or boiling water
over cured or fresh leaves of Camellia sinensis, an
evergreen shrub native to East Asia which probably originated in the
borderlands of southwestern China and northern Myanmar.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:47 PM
sips
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:48 PM
I suspect that Numenorean tea would have lost its savor by the time
Hobbit were enjoying tea in the The Shire.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:48 PM
I'm sure humanity has poured boiling water over lots of different
leaves, heh.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:48 PM
I never pour hot water over my teabags, I just dip them in. They
break otherwise.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Hmm, must be weak teabags. Never had that problem.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Well, not outright tear in half, but it's seen leakages.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
Very, very true, Eonwe, but Tolkien specifies the Hobbit beverage as
"Tea," implying its origin in Southeastern Asia (today). Of course,
they may have been drinking herb tea, but it was not named as such
before the arrival of real tea in England.
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 4:51 PM
Yake fresh leaves and tea strainer you Banause (emote: stuck out
tongue)
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:51 PM
I'm sure there's a quote that would unsatisfactorily answer the
question of where they got tea, but I think it would be either trade
with Dwarves or growing themselves (either by obtaining seeds
through trade or bringing it themselves in their migration).
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:52 PM
In America, it seems to me (at least), that "tea" has taken on a
generic meaning of any hot beverage poured over dried leaves of some
type, such as Camellia Sinensis, or Chamomile, or whatever.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:52 PM
Maybe the Hobbits don't even remember where they got tea, heh.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:52 PM
So either the Avari or the Easterlings would have picked up the
habit of tea...
the hobbit habit
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:52 PM
There is some neat fanfaction about that very act, Ar.
[4:53 PM]
One story related how Gilraen learned that the afternoon tea habit
of the Elves of Imladris, that they learned from the HObbits, was a
very restful and invigorating event...all at the same time.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:56 PM
But as is implied by the discussion, how the Hobbits came to drink
tea is less "Of course they did" and more "How on earth did they
manage that?" So I point back to seeing what you all think are more
examples of the former :}
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 4:58 PM
Building houses and hobbit homes,?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:58 PM
"Of course they had cakes!"
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 5:00 PM
Holes stupid auto corrext
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:01 PM
Honestly though, most of my rereads aren't fresh or thorough or
lingering enough for me to notice little details like that right
now.
[5:02 PM]
I do remember noticing the bath thing.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
It's kind of a hard line to find, but I'm talking about things less
obvious that buildings but not so much "how on earth did they." I
hesistate to say "lucuries" or comforts, but stuff that can get
"lost in the cracks" might be the best way to describe what I'm
looking for.
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Namarie for now from me
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Sleep well.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
namarie!
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Hmm, I get what you mean, like flavor things that make sense once
you think about it.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:04 PM
Aye.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:04 PM
Namarie!
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:06 PM
Mirrors. The naltalma mentioned in ... Pretty sure it was Nature
of Middle-Earth.
[5:07 PM]
Shows mirrors aren't just a Hobbit thing if you had any doubts, heh.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:07 PM
hehe
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
Although a mirror is also mentioned in RIvendell so you shouldn't
have doubts :}
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
Hobbits had a lot of bits like that though, as if based on a
civilization more recent than what we see in most other races
Umbrellas, pens...
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:09 PM
Depends on the pen.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:09 PM
Silver spoons...
A postal service....
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:10 PM
Indeed, though I can't imagine wooden spoons being prevalent over
metal ones in places like Rivendell and Minas Tirith.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:10 PM
The Hobbits were very English in their habits, customs, luxuries,
eating habits, and so on.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
What about a police force?
Rather than military.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
They had the Bounders....
And the Shiriffs...
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
All they were concerned with was their own bounds. The King off in
Norbury worried about everything outside of it.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
Exactly. Other races we've seen generally had military/guards
sitting in as a police force, or at least I've noticed no mention of
separate officers.
[5:12 PM]
While the Shire, with basically no military, used a policing force
instead. Of course they did
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:12 PM
The bounders and shiriffs were really loosely organized, to say the
least.
But they were there!
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
Indeed!
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:13 PM
The typical "threat" they had to worry about was someone overstaying
his welcome at the Green Dragon. Not a whole lot to do otherwise :}
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Oooops....I have got to run (literally as well as figuratively). I
will check in later for Ar's report. Namarie!
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Namarie!
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Take care.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Sei gesund!
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:16 PM
I suppose we should just call it here. If anyone thinks of any other
examples during the week, feel free to mention it in here.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:16 PM
of course the Sindarin and Silvan elves were trained to hear a
dwarf's breathing in the dark
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:16 PM
hehe
[5:17 PM]
Here's another one for you: Book of Lost Tales mentions
wrestling (not of the Hulk Hogan variety, heh)
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:18 PM
Huh, interesting.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:19 PM
Consider Tulkas, and also consider how old the sport of wrestling
is, and it makes sense, heh.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:20 PM
Oiled muscles creaking.
Eh, can't say I've ever been a fan myself.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:21 PM
In BoLT there was Makar and his sister Meassa, and Makar had his own
halls where everyone was training for combat. As I recall Makar
wasn't fond of Tulkas visiting because Tulkas was always laughing
even in battle.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:21 PM
hehe
A relation to Bombadil, perhaps?
Keeping the mood up in any situation.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:22 PM
Heh, if Tom is an Ainu, then yes, actually :}
It also means that if he stops laughing in the middle of a fight,
you done messed up, heh.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:22 PM
Well, sure, but I was wondering if they had more of a connection
beyond that.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:22 PM
I doubt it.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:23 PM
As it seems they had similar personalities.
But I'm probably reading too much into it.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:24 PM
If Tom were Tulkas I think the conversation with Old Man WIllow
would've gone more like "Now Willow-man, you better let those
Hobbits out. Don't make me wallop you! Ring-a-ding-dillo!" heh
[5:26 PM]
Anyway...
Bangs gavel

Mine of Sight
Minesweeper#39s weird cousin. Use a variety of
clues to find all the mines. Over 100 levels.
[8:53 PM]
A puzzle game akin to minesweeper, but with a lot of different types
of clues over a lot of levels, and you'll have to use them in
combination to figure out where the mines are located.
No guessing needed, logic will be enough!

dass ich zu sortieren muss.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:19 PM
boxes?
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:20 PM
Ja. Boxes. Plural!
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:20 PM
Boxes to sort, good luck
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:21 PM
Es tut mir Leid, dass ich dich verdrossen habe. Du bist im

Hearthstone:
Level 40 on the reward track now! Progress is being made.
[9:23 PM]
I managed to complete the quest event, gathering enough xp through
daily quests. Was a bit intense to work through every day, but it
was enough to get the hero skin reward.
[9:24 PM]
Opened a few more packs, but no new legendaries from there. Still
about 260 to go
[9:29 PM]
Brawl is "Servant of Yogg-saron" Tryouts. Choose a class, get a
bunch of minions, each of which casting a random spell at a random
target.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:30 PM
Lots of randomness abound... be careful playing too many minions or
they'll end up targetting themselves
WoW:
[9:31 PM]
Bit more raiding, farming heroic. No useful rewards from vault,
though, except a new appearance.
[9:32 PM]
The megadungeon, however, was useful, as I finally got a new feral
dps trinket, and enough aspects' crests to max out my tier shoulders
and a few other pieces.
[9:34 PM]
Got enough draenic seeds for my second-last mog piece, the garden
sickle. Only one more 500-piece to go, won't be long now!
And out of game, another treasure to add... my Ardenweald Pepe plush
arrived
[9:36 PM]
The Kalimdor Cup started! I love the racing, dodging obstacles in
split seconds, flying from ring to ring, but I'm not quite good
enough to get all gold on the advanced and reverse races. Spent
hours and hours and only got a couple of them, so instead I decided
to get all normal races on gold and all advanced and reverse races
on silver. Still an interesting challenge on most of the tracks, but
not as frustrating.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:37 PM
I imagine that frustration might have undesirable consequences when
gaming...
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:38 PM
And between my main druid, collecting those achievements, and my
mage to go through the easiest tracks once again, I collected enough
badges to buy the entire Drake Racer's appearance set, as well as
the drake customizations!
Heh, not to the point of chucking my pc through the window, but it
did feel exhausting at points
[9:39 PM]
So that's what I wanted from the Kalimdor Cup, anyway. Looking
forward to the upcoming dragonriding cups in other continents as
well. I know Eastern Kingdoms and Outland have been discovered, at
least
[9:40 PM]
Speaking of the mage, it turns out that the races give a lot of
experience, especially since you can do them over and over again.
She got a whole level going through the gold and silver ranks,
making it to 62!
[9:41 PM]
And after I was done with my Cup objectives, I finally made time to
do some normal quests again, completing the first Revendreth arc
with the mage at last.
[9:42 PM]
And after that I poked the blood elf paladin once again, completing
a quest to get some treants under control on the starting isle. The
next quest, while not special in itself, is the one that was
immortalized in one of Carbot's WoW parody videos,

Huey Lewis & The News - Back In Time
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:45 PM
One of his most hauntingly beautiful videos, I must admit.
[9:46 PM]
The Carbot one, that is
And that's my report for the week!
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:46 PM
I think that you posted (oops...had to shift back from mhy German
keyboard to English) that video before. I enjoyed the music so much
that I tried to find other carbot shows as well, without success.
The music is very minimalist, abnd reminds me of Philip
Glass....what do you think?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:47 PM
The music is actually from the game, the blood elf zones in
particular. But it's used to great effect.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:48 PM
So someone made the cartoon, and appropriated the music for the
background?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:49 PM
This is a person who's made a career out of making parody videos out
of Blizzard Entertainment's games, to the point of being endorsed by
them. There have even been official mods for some of the games using
his artstyle.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:49 PM
The storyline is sort of weird...and the characters do not seem
"right," somehow. Why do they run over the newsboy? Why does he kill
the happylooking guards? What is the poiont?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:50 PM
In this case it's a parody of one of the WoW starting zones, where
the low level enemies are neutral toward the players but must still
be slain for quests.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:51 PM
Ah. I think I understand. All this emphasis on slaying and killing
in a game....I wonder.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:51 PM
The disregard for questgivers and other NPCs by players is a
recurring theme in his WoW videos :)
As well as the strange mechanics surrounding them.
[9:52 PM]
There's other types of quests as well, but most of them do involve
combat.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:52 PM
Maybe one day I will truly be able to play a game. I think that
Varda is frustrated with my lack of progress.
I feel like a troll.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 9:53 PM
World of Warcraft is a dangerous world dangerously fraught with many
dangerous dangers. Dangerous.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 9:53 PM
And minimalist?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:54 PM
I don't think frustration is the right word, but I do think she'd be
happy to have you join other Valarguild players at higher levels and
content. But, as we all do, I'm sure she respects you doing things
at your own pace :)
[9:54 PM]
Minimalism is just this creator's artstyle :)
WoW is more... cartoonish, but still 3d and quite detailed.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 9:55 PM
I have the Carbot Starcraft Remastered. I decided why not.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 9:55 PM
So do I! It's quite fun :)
