Return to Carn Dm instances (Sant Lhoer, Thaurisgar, and Sagroth) are now available on Tier 4.
They are  temporarily closing the Tier 4 version of Thaurisgar, the Vile Apothecary due to a bug where instance completion is not awarding its proper Tier 4 chest. The Tier 4 version of this instance should return in the next game update.

Varda — Today at 4:27 PM
Any other gaming, membership news to add? Requests, other?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:28 PM
To be fair, the plan is to make an alt, recruit it to the guild, level it to 10 in whatever time I'm not on my main, then make the next one. So it'll be a somewhat regular service.

Varda — Today at 4:28 PM

Tolkien!

[4:29 PM]
Everyone here has not only read the LotR but the Sil and a lot more, so
this question can be tossed out there for allllll the books!
JRRT wrote a fantasy world. What monsters real and/or unreal did he throw at the heroes?
Have fun. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:30 PM
The monster that is mortal greed..

Varda — Today at 4:30 PM
and hubris. : )

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:31 PM
I have always been intrigued by the "nameless things" living far beneath Moria that were unknown even to Sauron and his evil minions...I wonder what Tolkien in mind for these monsters (if they were, in fact, monsters), and perhaps he was leaving himself an "out" to include other beasties and things later...

Varda — Today at 4:32 PM
Sauron may have known more of them than we do.
Leaving the monsters in the dark can be scarier than coming out and labeling them all.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:32 PM
Quite possible, but even Gandalf said "Sauron knows them not," or something like that.
[4:33 PM]
And Gandalf didn't tell anyone about what he saw "down there" either.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:33 PM
Indeed, Varda, there's nothing a description can do that's worse than the imagination of the unknown...
[4:34 PM]
...Which means Gandalf was just creeping them out by not telling people

Varda — Today at 4:34 PM
LotRO has a batch of the "nameless evils" so we gamers appreciate the ambiguity there. ; )
heh, Phar

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:35 PM
I have determined that the name of all nameless evils should be.... Billy.

Varda — Today at 4:35 PM
Maybe it's the familiarity from gaming, but did it say nameless things or nameless evils? I forget.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:36 PM
Probably "nameless things", actually.

Varda — Today at 4:36 PM
That does give a different light and way to think about them.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:37 PM
Sure. Means they're not malevolent per se.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:37 PM
Bah, as usual, the book I need is not amongst the pile of books I have.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:37 PM
Just want to be left alone.
[4:37 PM]
Or maybe they're very friendly, throwing parties down there!

Varda — Today at 4:37 PM
They might just eat you because they don't realize you're not the usual munchie.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:37 PM
Like the powerful magician/wizard in Monty Python's King Arthur movie...."Oh mighty wizard...what is your name?" "Call me Tim."

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:37 PM
Party snack.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:38 PM
"A grrraaaaaaaaiiiiiil?!"

Varda — Today at 4:38 PM
heh
There you go. Tim lives down there!

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:39 PM

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:40 PM
hehe

Varda — Today at 4:41 PM
The fell beast description sounded a lot like a pteranodon or pterosaur.
[4:42 PM]
They were fed foul things and trained as Sauron needed. They could bear the dread of the Nazgul.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:43 PM
Hmm, I know the pteras had rather distinctive heads/beaks, and I don't think anybody referred to the fel beasts as bird faces
[4:43 PM]
I liked the movie representation of them, with the snake-like heads instead.

Varda — Today at 4:43 PM
They didn't say they weren't bird faces, either. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:43 PM
True, that.

Varda — Today at 4:44 PM
Things from ancient times with skin rather than feathers or scales
[4:44 PM]
Just a neat thought.
[4:45 PM]
Don't guess the special black horses stolen from Rohan and trained for the Black Riders qualify, but close.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:45 PM
Yes. The Pterosaurs apparently possessed no evidence of feathers....they evolved later, with the the rise of true birds. At least that is what the fossil record tells us to date.

Varda — Today at 4:46 PM
Aye, Sandalf

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:46 PM
Many of them were one way fliers...they would swoop down on unsuspecting prey, but then have to climb back up their rock outcrop or "tree" or whatever in order to do the whole thing over again. They were not really good fliers, for the most part.

Varda — Today at 4:48 PM
Wargs and wolves came against our heroes too.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:49 PM
So maybe a bit more like flying squirrels, Sandalf?

Varda — Today at 4:49 PM
They could fly a bit as I remember, not just gliders?

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:50 PM
there is a  species  that is actually called flying squirrel or flying fox .  i think they are native to  australia or something like that let me check ..

Varda — Today at 4:50 PM
Both exist.
[4:51 PM]
The flying squirrel is a glider, a squirrel.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:51 PM
Yes. That would be the correct analogy. Of course, we cannot be sure about this, a lot of our knowledge of these creatures comes from evidence in the fossil record, biomechanics, and what they could likely do. There are no living (or recently living!) specimens we can use for an analaog.

Varda — Today at 4:51 PM
The flying fox is a bat.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:51 PM
You  mean Jurassic Park isn't true?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:51 PM
What? Are you questioning the way it REALLY was?
he he.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:51 PM

    Encyclopedia Britannica
    Did Dinosaurs Really Have Feathers?
    And how did feathers evolve?

Varda — Today at 4:52 PM
Some say feathers evolved from scales.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:53 PM
yes .. but the flying squirrel  originates from asia and some are  from russia  and belarus so my mistake . but there you are

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:53 PM
Just for fun. Based on fossil imprints, looks like some dinosaurs and pterosaurs had feathers.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:53 PM
feathers maybe as protection against the elements? rain  and the cold maybe?

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:54 PM
Would make sense.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:54 PM
But not all...and just as "hair" is a distinguishing characteristic for mammals, not all mammals are hairy....like us.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:54 PM
We do have some hair.
[4:55 PM]
We're not naked molerats.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:55 PM
Absolutely. And I wish I had more where I need it, and less where I don't need it. Ah, age...

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:55 PM
hehe

Varda — Today at 4:56 PM
We have the advantage of being able to use clothes to handle putting on and off hair as the weather dictates. : )
erases sentence and starts over

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:56 PM
One of the many glories and advantages of the human condition. We can live almost anywhere, and do.

Varda — Today at 4:56 PM
Aye : )
So, any other monsters from Middle-earth we want to mention? Dragons maybe?

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:57 PM
Those Elves are pretty monstrous.... Pretty and monstrous.

Varda — Today at 4:57 PM
hehe - ask any dwarf, especially petty dwarves.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:58 PM
And yes, elves... terrific and terrible.

Varda — Today at 4:58 PM
Giant turtle: Fastitocalon

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:58 PM
Trolls.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:59 PM
Oh no, he was the friendliest of all Eru's creatures. He let a bunch of people land on him and only went under when someone thought it a good idea to light a fire on his back. Tell me you wouldn't do the same thing? :}

Varda — Today at 4:59 PM
That would be annoying. : )
gavel points at self. Tattoo says "monster"

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:00 PM
Hmm, reminds me of a similar scene in one of the first Discworld novels, where they light a fire in a gigantic troll's mouth, thinking it's a hollow in a mountain.

Varda — Today at 5:00 PM
I am being called away, but feel free to weigh in on creatures, good or bad depending on a certain point of view. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:01 PM
Wasn't there a giant in one of his other stories? Or am I just thinking of another dragon...

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:01 PM
Giants in the Hobbit as memory serves.

Varda — Today at 5:01 PM
Group effort. I got it started and the guys finished. Later!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:01 PM

Sandalf13 — Today at 7:57 PM
Still here. I wondering if Ar will return for his weekly personal gaming report, or did I miss something?

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:58 PM
I'm sure he will.\

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:00 PM
As we say auf Deutsch (in German), "Mal sehen!" Literally, "time to see," just like our expression "time will tell" in English. It is interesting to me that so many of our basic folk-sayings in English so closely resemble their German equivalent...perhaps hinting at their antiquity.
More to come on this when I get my Chapter on "Folk-sayings in the LoTR" up and going on our website.

Varda — Today at 8:04 PM
back
Phar has given his report every Sunday for a very long time. : )

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:14 PM

I hope that one day you will be able to make a trip up here for a visit. I would love to do some cooking for you and Fangorn. As I told you, I have (right now) TWO guestrooms....but will always keep one for guests only.

Varda — Today at 8:17 PM
Sounds fantastic. Won't be happening for quite some time yet, I fear.

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:17 PM
"The years will bring what they may."

Varda — Today at 8:17 PM
Aye : )

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:18 PM
As I told you before, I may be in Texas again in July or August this year...mal sehen (see above)!

Varda — Today at 8:21 PM
That would be cool. Nothing takes us out to your neck of the woods, unfortunately.

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:24 PM
Woods are hard to find on the Great Plains, unless they are planted by humans. On the drive from Lincoln to Denver, I always note that almost all of the trees one sees along the road are planted by farmers/ranchers for windbreaks, or are the cottonwood trees along the stream beds.  A big joke in Nebraska is the the Nebraska National Forest consists of trees that were planted by men in the CCC back in the 1930s. One does not see a single tree for miles and miles in the Sandhill country, or the rest of Nebraska, for that matter...unless in a town.
[8:29 PM]
Funny that you used the expression "neck of the woods" in your answer....as I was just talking to Eonwe about folk-sayings. Neck of the woods uses a very old meaning of the word neck, that is, a narrow piece of land or sea...rarely used in that sense today.

Varda — Today at 8:32 PM
I'm loaded with those expressions. Have to keep them cut out of any writing, but just chat? Here they come.
[8:36 PM]
I also fight monsters for the right-o'-way. ; )  A clearing made in the woods usually to put something like telephone lines down. Makes great edge for critters to get a change in food thanks to the sunlight and grass.

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:48 PM
Hallo Varda! What is the correct way to cite the HoME series? I am reworking Chapter 6 at your request, and need to include reference to the Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth.

Varda — Today at 9:10 PM
Pretty much like any other book. Title and chapter, but it's a kindness to include which number of the HoMe it is also.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 9:19 PM
Alright, after spending the last hour playing a game made by the same person as a badge of this week....
[9:19 PM]
Personal gaming report!

Sandalf13 — Today at 9:19 PM
Endlich!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 9:20 PM
For (non)flashgaming, rather than giving the badged game, I guess I'll give the one I've been playing for the last hour
[9:21 PM]
https://www.kongregate.com/games/Ferociter/amidst-the-sky is a platformer taking place high up in the sky. Jump from platform to platform, using clouds to swim and rise through, and wind currents that blow you in a certain direction. Investigate the ruins along your way to spawn stuff outside, as well as unlock new abilities such as switching currents on and off, or freezing yourself in time to stop your momentum or time events.
    Kongregate
    Amidst the Sky
Embark on a mysterious journey through a land floating high up in the sky. Swim through clouds, soar along wind currents at great speed and jump over floating...

[9:22 PM]
After that hour of play I'm not sure if I've even gotten halfway... I might poke it some more in the future and see what else there is to unlock.
[9:22 PM]
Or you can see for yourself  It can be pretty difficult though, with certain jumps and sections requiring a good many tries.

Blizzard gaming:
[9:28 PM]
Hearthstone:
New expansion is coming soon, but so far we're still on the old reward track. Made it to level 159 there.
[9:29 PM]
Brawl is the random deathrattle one, where each minion you play gets a deathrattle of a random minion. Lots of luck needed, but hunter and priest tend to work well with deathrattles, so those are advised.
Though I think I won one with mage too.
[9:30 PM]
Got 50 wins with the death knight, unlocking a bunch of golden versions of the standard death knight cards, including a bunch I'm using, so now they look nicer
[9:31 PM]
The other skin rewards from the event quest not chosen, are indeed available, but for real money as feared. Guess I'll just have the one for now
WoW:
[9:33 PM]
After a less than 1% wipe on thursday on heroic Razsageth, we finally brought her down today! So the heroic raid is now cleared, and achievement gotten. Pretty smooth kill as well, and done within the first hour of the raid, so we used the rest of the night to go back to the start of the raid and clear 6 earlier bosses to maximize the vault rewards. We've still got to kill her again for some of our players who weren't present tonight, but it's a massive milestone

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 9:34 PM
Two weekly quests this week, being the second timewalk week and the arena skirmishes. Completed the timewalks, still very smoothly, and got 8 out of 10 skirmishes done, which is also not actually going that badly. The reward from the timewalks was not an upgrade, though.
[9:36 PM]
Haven't made much progress on the trading post for this month, but with Noblegarden coming up, I can complete some objectives there.
[9:37 PM]
And with patch 10.1 coming up I drafted a bit more details for my upcoming horde characters, figuring out a few names... with less than a month to go, the anticipation rises

Eonwë Valar — Today at 9:37 PM
I did the Darkmoon Faire to get mine going, hope to use Noblegarden to get almost done if not full-done.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 9:37 PM
Hmm, I considered the Faire, but too late now

Eonwë Valar — Today at 9:38 PM
Pleasantly surprised to learn the profession quests give you profession knowledge too.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 9:38 PM
But I'm also questing on the mage some more, so at least the 30 quest objective should be done in time.
[9:39 PM]
She's joined the House of the Chosen, doing some chores, as well as freeing the Primus' runeblade and helping to forge the hilt. Still a bit slow going, but as I'm also catching up on mmochamp again on the side, more free time should happen soon!
[9:40 PM]
And that's my report for the week
Namarie!

Eonwë Valar — Today at 9:44 PM
Sleep well.

Varda — Today at 9:44 PM
Thank you, Phar : )

Sandalf13 — 04/09/2023 10:08 PM
Signing off. Sorry I missed Ar's goodbye. I was busy editing Chapter Six. Namarie and sei gesund! My tired old bones are crying out for bed!
[10:08 PM]

Eonwë Valar — 04/09/2023 10:10 PM
Take care Sandalf.

Varda — 04/09/2023 10:15 PM
Good night. : )  I'm looking for that sleep time too. Namarie!

Eonwë Valar — 04/09/2023 10:16 PM
