Before-meeting

Sandalf13 — Today at 3:58 PM
Aiya All! Whenever you arrive!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 3:58 PM
Aiya!

Sandalf13 — Today at 3:58 PM
Whassup, Ar?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 3:58 PM
Not much, doing 2 games at once again

Sandalf13 — Today at 3:59 PM
I don't know how you do it.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 3:59 PM
Partial windows

Sandalf13 — Today at 3:59 PM
I have no idea how to subdivide my window.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 3:59 PM
I can see what's happening in one while doing the other.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:00 PM
aiya my friends

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:00 PM
Do you just upen up two games at once and keep them in reduced-size windows?

Varda — Today at 4:00 PM
Aiya

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:00 PM
Aiya!

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:00 PM
Aiya again!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:00 PM
Well, my WoW is fullscreen-windowed, and this browsergame is reduced size so I can see WoW around/behind it.

Varda — Today at 4:00 PM
Can use more than one monitor, or make the windows small next to each other on the same screen.
[4:01 PM]
or that.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:01 PM
Never went for the 2 monitor thing. Though I know people who went for 3.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:01 PM
I follow you...I do that too, but not with games!

Varda — Today at 4:01 PM
I went with two monitors until having to give one up. Very handy.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:01 PM
I can't even fit a widescreen in this little alcove, let alone multiple

Varda — Today at 4:01 PM
Sandalf, you might have to add "yet".  ; )

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:02 PM
Gotcha, Digger(in)!!

Varda — Today at 4:02 PM
I have a laptop. The other monitor sat on a shelf behind and above it.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:04 PM
My new front porch...poured on Tuesday.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:04 PM
Ouch?
Did it collapse?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:04 PM
Next step is to build a small fence around it, to match all the others in the neighborhood!
[4:05 PM]
No...it was pretty firm within 1 hour, and cured over a 24 hour period. I could walk on it Wednesday afternoon.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:05 PM
Oh, poured as in concrete, not as in a major heavy rainstorm that collapsed the fence in place

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:05 PM
looks nice

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:06 PM
Yes. It was a "concrete pour" with a big cement truck and everything....pretty impressive to watch. You may note my old Raymond Rural Fire District award if you blow the picture up a little....back from my firefighter/EMT-B days.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:07 PM
Yeah, that only added to my misunderstanding, as I thought you'd put it down to identify it as a disaster scene

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:08 PM
Sometimes my life is a disaster...don't even ask about the landscaping job.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:08 PM
hehe

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:16 PM
Fladrif last online... 9 hours ago!

Shelob — Today at 4:16 PM
Might have some. But I'm going to finish my dm to Varda first to double check if it's appropriate.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:17 PM

I've managed to land myself a job and contracted COVID both in February. As a result, even more than usual, I'm usually in bed by 10 PM on Sunday nights severely limiting my attendance even more than it was before. I'm glad I managed to attend today, because as I said, it's been too long.

Varda — Today at 4:23 PM
Grats on the job!!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:24 PM

Shelob — Today at 4:24 PM

Tolkien!

[4:48 PM]
Shelob, you had a topic?

Shelob — Today at 4:48 PM
Ah yes! It just popped into my head:
After more than 20 years since the first LotR movie aired, and countless of other entertainment entries, how much has our view of the original works been subsumed by those cast into the images of the movies and other entries, for better or worse?

Varda — Today at 4:49 PM
I admit the movie images took over from a lot of my mental images.

Shelob — Today at 4:49 PM
For example, especially with games like LotRO portraying the original cast close to that of the movies, for me, I can't even remember what I used to think Aragorn would be like. To me, Aragorn is Viggo Mortensen.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:50 PM
When I first read LOTR I envisaged hobbits as green, like Warcraft goblins. I'm glad that got corrected, at least

Varda — Today at 4:50 PM
Aragorn should have black hair, be extremely tall, and no beard or stubble. And yet I think of Viggo.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:50 PM
An ongoing problem. The beauty of reading a book is that you can create your own mental image of the character(s) you are reading about. Movies take that away from us, and leave us with the image that some director arbitrarily decided to give us....and yes, those movie images tend to dominate our own mental pictures.

Varda — Today at 4:50 PM
Green? I wonder why?
[4:51 PM]
Well put, Sandalf.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:51 PM
I assume Warcraft, but I can't remember for sure!

Varda — Today at 4:51 PM
Gandalf now looks like the movie in my head though. Can't hardly change that one.

Shelob — Today at 4:51 PM
I think that's a testament to the brilliance of Peter Jackson, the writing team and the actors and all the rest of the cast and crew to really bring the books to life.

Varda — Today at 4:51 PM
It's always been a problem when art is added to a book.

Shelob — Today at 4:52 PM
If the movies had been bad, we might have a lot less trouble thinking of our own mental images, since then the actors would not really be them, right?

Varda — Today at 4:52 PM
Agreed, Shelob. Brilliant casting and setting. New Zealand and incredible sets. Amazing clothing, armor, etc

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:52 PM
Of all characters, I think it's Frodo who fits my current image the least, since I know he's around 50 in the books, so I see him a bit fatter and more wrinkly.
Bakshi helps with that.

Varda — Today at 4:52 PM
Aye, Shelob. The Rankin-Bass movies did not take over my mental images, for instance.
[4:53 PM]
He'd lose weight fast on that trip. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:53 PM
Rankin-Bass, yes. Bakshi a bit less.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:53 PM
no frog-like orcs then, Varda :)?

Varda — Today at 4:54 PM
Bakshi also did not take over.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:54 PM
And true, he'd shed weight pretty fast...

Varda — Today at 4:54 PM
But the songs, heh. Where there's a whip there's a way and others. Catchy.

Shelob — Today at 4:54 PM
hehe

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:54 PM
uhu#

Shelob — Today at 4:55 PM
The Hobbit didn't change much for me either. While Legolas is still Orlando Bloom, he's Legolas from the original movies, not the Hobbit, where I think he's portrayed much more like... a ninny.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:55 PM
Still, if you show someone PJ's LotR and tell them that Frodo's 50 years old and it's been 17 years since his coming of age party, they're going to look at you funny.

Varda — Today at 4:55 PM
They didn't have Tolkien to work from, aye.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:58 PM
We're gonna  march all day, all day, all day ♪

Shelob — Today at 4:58 PM
I also think that the main success of the movies also helped with spinoff projects, like I mentioned before, further solidifying our new mental images of our beloved characters. Even when some of those spinoff works weren't as good, seeing Orlando as Legolas again makes it harder to think of whatever original image we had of him.

Varda — Today at 4:59 PM
Reinforcement

Shelob — Today at 4:59 PM
And I'll be honest, writing that, I think I expected Legolas to be older, wiser, yet he's still Orlando. Doesn't make sense.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:59 PM
Battle for Middle-earth, LotRO, even https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings:_The_Fellowship_of_the_Ring_(video_game) do reinforce it.

Varda — Today at 5:00 PM
But if they do an awful job (RoP) it doesn't seem to do the same thing.
[5:01 PM]
Probably still slips in some.

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:01 PM
i had something like this i think when i was a kid .... i remember playing it on the tv
so it was a long time before that ^^

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:02 PM
I know I have once played an older, topview LotR game, but I don't remember which one...
But the one I linked was from 2002, so yeah... movie.

Varda — Today at 5:03 PM
LotRO slips in too, mainly for the world. It helps set where everything is.

Shelob — Today at 5:03 PM
Aye.
[5:04 PM]
But I think even RoP will help reinforcing some views, as it really does take from PJ's movies.

Varda — Today at 5:04 PM
I didn't see enough of it to really get the impressions stuck.
[5:05 PM]
Just the first two and the clips people keep putting up.

Shelob — Today at 5:05 PM
I haven't seen much of it, partially because of the bad press it was getting, but I still have seen the images of Celebrimbor, and it is like the elves in the movies, and therefore relatable and thus reinforces its own image by taking so well from its predecessor.

Varda — Today at 5:08 PM
I tried to watch.

Shelob — Today at 5:09 PM
I must say at this point though, even if I could go back to the images I had formed when I first read Lord of the Rings, I don't really want to. The movies did so much so well that when you can see past all the parts that were left out (and let's face it, the books also did not tell everything), to me, it IS Lord of the Rings.
[5:10 PM]
PJ didn't take away from my imagination, he added to it in such a way that the characters truly came alive, a world I could not only imagine, but see, almost feel.

Varda — Today at 5:10 PM
Well said. : )
[5:12 PM]
Even the Hobbit movies did that. The books didn't give a huge amount of differentiation between the dwarves

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:12 PM
I have looked at enough LoTR artwork online to see a wide variety of representations of each of the characters in the books....although quite a few artists mimic the images given to us in the movies, there are enough other artists who have their own take on what various characters look like. Seeing such a huge variety of representations actually helps me keep my own mental images available to me....

Varda — Today at 5:12 PM
Another use for artwork!

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:13 PM
Look, for example, at the LoTR artwork by Jenny Dolfen...excellent...a not at all like the movies!

[Note: Jenny Dolfen's site: https://goldseven.wordpress.com/  and her Tolkien page: https://goldseven.wordpress.com/galleries/tolkien/ and her Aratar of the Valar page: https://goldseven.wordpress.com/2020/04/11/the-valar-lockdown-sketches/ and there are more. :)  ]

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:13 PM
Hobbit Dwarves didn't do it for me. I like the book description about the differently colored hats and coats etc, in the movie they're just too varied.

Shelob — Today at 5:13 PM
Oh definitely! The Hobbit movies were still good, just too much of a departure of the drama that was LotR. While the Hobbit was intended to be a children's book, it never was a comedy, and that's where I think the execs went horribly wrong.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:14 PM
I still see them more like Snowwhite's dwarves.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:14 PM
You cannot turn a short book, like the Hobbits, in a series of 2-3 hour long movies! OI have never even looked at "The Hobbit" movies, and  do not fell any the worse for it.

Shelob — Today at 5:14 PM
2 movies would have been fine. 3 was just too much. It got us the weird love triangle thing. Yuck.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:15 PM
"Comedy" for The Hobbit might be a bit too strong, but there was definitely a humorous vibe going on which I liked.

Varda — Today at 5:15 PM
The Hobbit wasn't just doing the Hobbit book, but trying to show a lot of the appendix info that went on that Bilbo did not see. And he was not in those scenes, kind of neat.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:15 PM
The book, I'm referring to.

@Ar-Pharazon-V
I still see them more like Snowwhite's dwarves.
Shelob — Today at 5:16 PM
That would be taking things too far. Snowwhite's dwarves were more like midgets, barely getting up to half a human's height. In the books, Dwarves were a fair bit taller than Hobbits.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:17 PM
Well, alright, not the size then

Shelob — Today at 5:17 PM
I'd say that your third image actually gets the height fairly correct.
I will admit they would be more like diggy diggy hole though. [Note:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytWz0qVvBZ0 for the Yogscast animated "Diggy Diggy Hole" ]
Which is more like Snowwhite.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:17 PM
Right

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:18 PM
\

Shelob — Today at 5:18 PM
And Thorin's portrayal was just downright weird.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:18 PM
I can still recognize James Nesbitt in that image, btw.
Even if I hadn't seen the movie.

Shelob — Today at 5:19 PM
Who is James Nesbitt?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:19 PM
Bofur.
I mostly know him from Cold Feet.

Shelob — Today at 5:20 PM
Would not have recognized him from Bofur. But I do know the guy from plenty other movies.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:20 PM
He's the left-most dwarf in that drawing.

Varda — Today at 5:20 PM
(our own Bofur in the Valar liked him)

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:21 PM
That reminds me, Varda.. is Pharazon in RoP? I really should check it out just to see what my namesake looks like

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:22 PM
or he might  be actually .. with this time jumping in there u dont  know

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:23 PM
Yes. Pharazon is there...a pretty impressive-looking character.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:23 PM
googles Yeah, I can live with that. Reminds me a bit of Brian Blessed in Blackadder

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:23 PM
oh he was the cuncillor wasn t he ? the speaker for all the guilds or something like that .. sorry that was in the series not after the book

Varda — Today at 5:24 PM
Glad someone knew. : )

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:25 PM
I remember him sort of . an older guy very rich and influential

Varda — Today at 5:25 PM
Wow, never thought of him as gray/iron haired.

:)

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:26 PM
Ar-Pharazon makes Denethor look like an angel.

Varda — Today at 5:26 PM
Sauron really helped corrupt him.
[5:27 PM]
Just a prisoner. Advisor. Boss.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:27 PM
Yes he did...buyt he was corruptible to begin with....plus, like Aragorn et al, Ar-Phar had NO BEARD.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:27 PM
Eminence grise.

Varda — Today at 5:27 PM
Aye, Numereans were beardless.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:27 PM
I like my - I mean his - beard

Varda — Today at 5:27 PM
Aye, Ar-Pharazon was already power-hungry, usurped the throne.
[5:28 PM]
Nice beard, Phar. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:28 PM
That hair, though. I'll take that hair.
I want to go grey like that.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:28 PM
I cannot grow one...it somes in in sploches...some here, some there...

Varda — Today at 5:28 PM
You're part elf or Numenorean, Sandalf?

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:28 PM
No...i think it is a family thing.

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:29 PM
I always had the impression that he was younger then he was pictured

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:29 PM
Well, I don't know when these scenes/this show takes place. Pharazon was definitely younger when he went after Sauron.
[5:30 PM]
But he was nearing death when he invaded Valinor.

Varda — Today at 5:30 PM
Getting nervous, he was.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:30 PM
Indeedy.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:30 PM
The story of Ar-Pharazon sort of resembles (in broad outline) that of Isildur, I think. But Isildur never fell nearly as far as Ar, I suppose.

Varda — Today at 5:31 PM
Phar was quite a bit worse, seems like. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:31 PM
Spent 200 years delaying the invasion... but when the end draws near...

Varda — Today at 5:31 PM
Our Phar is trying to redeem him.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:31 PM
To sea we go!

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:31 PM
I remember well my exchange with Ar about his decision to name himself after Ar-Pharazon.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:31 PM
..Bah, now I want to watch this show

Varda — Today at 5:32 PM
Feel free. Report back if you like. : )
I just... couldn't.
Tried.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:32 PM
hehe

Varda — Today at 5:32 PM
Trying to stay quiet during the show. ugggghhhh
Need a gag. ; )

Shelob — Today at 5:32 PM
Well, I'm happy I was here and had some fun discussing Tolkien like in the good old days. Love the good new days. But now, this Spidey is going to go on her picnic with some hobbits. I mean, sleep. Yes. Definitely sleep.

Varda — Today at 5:33 PM
Yay sleep (or relaxation). ; )

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:33 PM
Nice tasty hobbitese, is it?

Varda — Today at 5:33 PM
We are past the hour by half!

Shelob — Today at 5:33 PM
You're not supposed to encourage me Sandalf!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:33 PM
Well, I don't mind deviation from the books, honestly. I enjoyed Game of Thrones despite being aware of the differences, I liked The Watch even after reading the entire Discworld series, and I liked the LotR movies too.

Varda — Today at 5:33 PM
gavels race to get past all those legs
at least some make it to the hammerpad

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:33 PM
I can easily watch a show like this and just enjoy it for what it is without nitpicking (much).

LotRO has that.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:35 PM
Sleep no more! Macbeth doth murder sleep, the innocent sleep, sleep that knits the ravaged sleeve of care, the end of each days labor, sore labour's bath, great nature's second course."

    Kongregate
    HP Atk Def
Collect the pickups in each level and defeat the enemies in this grid-based puzzle game.

[6:53 PM]
Grid-based dungeon strategy game! Each level is a small dungeon with various enemies, as well as attack/defense upgrades and health bonuses.
Plan your way through upgrades and enemies, by calculating stats (and/or trial and error) to make it to the stairs alive.

Sandalf13 — Today at 6:55 PM
I'm back...munching on my tasty dinner and reading...

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:58 PM
Aiyata
[6:59 PM]
Anyway, after playing through the first 10 levels again, I can say it's quite doable... but you will need a few attempts per level

Eonwë Valar — Today at 6:59 PM
Heya all.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:00 PM
Aiya!
[7:01 PM]
Oh, and Kongregate-related, they're bringing back new Kongpanions/collectible buddies, with outline previews as they did years ago on the now-defunct forum, and I'm starting the fun tradition of ms-painting my own designs/ideas again

Blizzard gaming:

Sandalf13 — Today at 7:01 PM
Aiya Eonwe!

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:01 PM
Sorry I missed the meeting. RL and all that.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:02 PM
Well, it's kinda aftermeeting

Sandalf13 — Today at 7:03 PM
We missed you.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:03 PM
Hearthstone:
Level 41 on the reward track, with a few more packs and golden cards as rewards.
[7:05 PM]
There's a quest event going for the expansion's launch, Legends Take the Stage, and I'm one daily quest away from completing the track. Interestingly it seems that after you complete the main quests, you can get 2 daily quests a day rather than just 1, occupying both slots.
So I should make it easily

Sandalf13 — Today at 7:05 PM
Good luck.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:05 PM
Also, got the death knight to level 28. Almost halfway!
[7:06 PM]
Brawl is an oldy, All-Star Squad. Choose one card, get 22 copies and some random class cards.
[7:07 PM]
Since the deck recipe brawl had an interesting mage deck with a spell that gets more powerful the more times you use it, I decided to go with that one, Lightshow. Indeed, it works quite nicely, as it can ramp up quickly
And thanks, Sandalf, but 1 daily quest in 8 days remaining shouldn't require too much luck
[7:08 PM]
WoW:
[7:10 PM]
For raiding, the plan was to kill Razsageth a few more times before the new patch comes, but with low numbers it was decided to cancel that, so now we're raidfree until May 14th. Should give me some more time to work on other projects in the game.
[7:11 PM]
Old-school raid is still continuing in Siege of Orgrimmar, though the pet-droprate is woefully low still and we're contemplating moving on to another raid after almost a year of going there. I also unlocked my last weapon appearance from there, the wand, on my mage, so I'm a few cloth pieces away from being done with appearances there myself. We'll see what we decide! If nothing else, my own last missing pet comes from the 4th boss, so it shouldn't take too long to solo that if need be.
[7:12 PM]
Another timewalk weekly, another duplicate reward for it  But still, fun was had!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:12 PM
As well as the pet battle weekly, which as always went pretty smoothly with my team of 3 winter veil gnomes.
[7:13 PM]
Also, through brawl, honor level 108 was reached.
[7:14 PM]
Completed the 1000 trading points through mage questing and the last few Dragonflight raidbosses. Had to use LFR for those last 2, since we started our break. But I went for the last wing to get a bit of a challenge, so that was fun
[7:15 PM]
And with the 1000 points, got 500 more tender for the trading post, as well as unlocking two nightelf/Elune based swords. Though I'm not sure if I actually have any one-handed sword-using elves in my roster
[7:16 PM]
Actually my Demon Hunter night elfess might. I'm not sure what they use other than glaives.
[7:18 PM]
I found, while catching up with MMOchampion news, that the werebear form for druid is getting more combat animations. Since I like to switch up cat and bearform for every major patch anyway, I decided to grab a version of that for bear for 10.1, and a nice orange almost firey color for cat. They should fit Zaralek Caverns well enough.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:21 PM
And finally, questing! More mage questing this week.
[7:23 PM]
She finished up the House of Constructs, freeing the Kyrian Construct and using it to take down one of the Construct Barons. Then she helped out a Broker with rescuing books from the Sepulcher of Knowledge, before visiting the House of Plagues, where she helped out with making a potion as well as going through the Mixing Monstrosities optional questline.
[7:25 PM]
After that Caldaera visited the Maw to free the missing Baron from the House of the Chosen, meeting the broker Ve'nari for the first time. And after a brief confrontation with Vyraz, the traitor Baron, she opened up the Seat of the Primus, completing the Maldraxxus storyline.
[7:26 PM]
Next week, she'll return to Oribos to pass on the Primus' message, and enter Ardenweald! Doesn't seem the right place for a fire mage, but I'm sure they'll appreciate her help anyway.
Quests should be getting green again at this point, after Maldraxxus being full of grey quests, so hopefully she'll pick up some more xp again along the way.
[7:27 PM]
And that's my report for the week

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:27 PM
Bravo! Encore! Encore! :}

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:27 PM
