Aiya Arien!
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:09 PM
Varda is obviously busy right now. We have Eonwë, Pharazon, Arien,
and Sandalf here. Anyone else who'd like to say "Aiya" for the
record, now is the time.
[Note: Varda, Fangorn, and Sauron were at the Comicpalooza
convention for the weekend.]
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:09 PM
Speak up now, or hold your piece 'til later.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:10 PM
Do youy mean "peice," or "peace"?
[4:10 PM]
piece, that is
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:10 PM
I'm not actually sure what the saying is. Piece makes more sense,
considering it's what you're going to say.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:11 PM
I believe that the correct English expression is "Hold your
peace," meaning keep content with what you are not saying to
someone.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:11 PM
I guess that works too!
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:12 PM
It originated in the marriage ceremony when someone who might have
had objections to a marriage was asked NOT to say anything against
the marriage...that is, they were to "hold their peace."
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:13 PM
And yet, saying your piece means expressing your opinion. So even
in that context it would still work
[4:13 PM]
But I'll take your piece for it.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:14 PM
There is the phrase "say your piece."
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:14 PM
You are very right....but holding one's piece also has one other
connotation that I will definitely not go into here.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:14 PM
But it is "Hold your peace".
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:14 PM
Let us just say that the last expression I put up refers to the
male animal only.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:15 PM
What if you keep a fire-arm in your hand? Is that holding your
piece?
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:15 PM
True enough...
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:15 PM
Anyway

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:22 PM
I hope that everything is OK with Varda and Fangorn...they are
having quite the heat wave down in Texas right now. I wonder if
their air conditioner is working OK.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:23 PM
I don't have the stats on members who were on this week for the
servers, but there were a few, Varda, Fangorn, Ioreth, and Dis
among them on Landroval at least.
[4:23 PM]
Only 105-ish in Texas.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:24 PM
But the humidity! From my trip down there last weekend, I learned
once again just how humid the Texas Gulf Coast really is....105ish
plus humidity would be unbearable.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:25 PM
(Read my "only" facetiously. I'm living in the same heat.)
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:25 PM
Oy Weh!
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:25 PM
Anyway, any other gaming news?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:26 PM

Tolkien:

May I ask a quick linguistic question before we start Tolkien?
[4:31 PM]
Arien might enjoy this one...
[4:32 PM]
Or Ar...I don't know.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:32 PM
Go ahead.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:32 PM
Which ONE word in the English language has more meanings and
connotations than any other word in the entire English language?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:33 PM
I could guess a few that have 2 or 3, but I've got a feeling it's
going to be more obscure
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:34 PM
Not at all...it is a pretty well-known world, according to Bill
Bryson in his book "The Mother Tongue - English and how it Got
That Way."
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
I believe you mentioned it was "take" a couple of weeks ago.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
It has THREE letters...and begins with an "s"
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
sue?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
sap?
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
"Take" is a very good guess! But no, "sue" is a LOT closer...but
not in the money.
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
sad
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:35 PM
Any more ideas?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:36 PM
sea?

Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:36 PM
Are you ready for the amazing answer?
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:36 PM

Arien Valar — Yesterday at 4:36 PM
see
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:37 PM
OK - so as not to take up too much of your time, here it is: the
word is "SET," cognate with German "setzen," to set. Set is an
adjective, a verb, and a noun. It has more meanings than any other
word in English. Check it out sometime. I did, and Bill Bryson is
right!
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:38 PM
adjective, verb, noun... so it's got the whole set?
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:38 PM
Indeed. It is a set without peer.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:38 PM
It's not an adverb, heh.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:39 PM
Setly?
Sorry...no go.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:39 PM
"He focused setly on his duties." Eh.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:39 PM
whew!
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
that set the scene ..
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
Or "set the score?"
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
nuff set
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
One moment, then we'll begin.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:40 PM
Or in the Amish (Pennsylvania Dutch) "Let it set a while."
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:44 PM
Ok.
[4:47 PM]
Since we're talking about 100+ degree weather, do we have any idea
what the inhabitants of Middle-Earth did to beat the heat? I
suspect they did not have ice cream.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:48 PM
I wonder how hot (or cool) hobbit holes got. I mean, there were
windows, but it still seems a bit stifling.
[4:48 PM]
Flets, on the other hand, seem quite breezy
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Perhaps they did...we do know that the Brandywine froze over on
occasion, and they quite possibly discovered the way how to store
ice for the hot summer months...so maybe they also learned how to
make ice cream...at least in the Winter, for sure.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
As I recall underground homes are usually pretty good about
keeping cool/warm.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:49 PM
55 Degrees F all the time, year 'round.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
So maybe you could store ice within a hobbit hole in a way?
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
At least that is true for caves, says I...Nebraska Professional
Geologist #G0149 and Wyoming Professional Geologist PG 1842.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:50 PM
Well if they could manage to keep ice that long, then sure, I can
imagine Hobbits having ice cream. Might be easier further north.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:51 PM
Import from Forochel
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:52 PM
I can imagine how that went over in the Ainulindalle: (edited)
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:53 PM
Of course if we place Middle-earth such that the Shire is at about
the same latitude as modern-day England, then summers would
usually not be too bad...and I believe it was Tolkien's intent to
do just that (please refer to my Chapter Three "The Geology of
Middle-earth") when it is posted.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:54 PM
Melkor: I'm going to make everything really cold!
Everyone: great, we can freeze cream and flavor it.
Melkor: Then I'll make everything real hot!
Everyone: Now we have a reason to eat it.
Melkor: Rats! Foiled again!
[4:54 PM]
It was his intent to have the Shire like England, yes.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 4:55 PM
That would do well as a Tolkien puppet show
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 4:56 PM
The most obvious way to beat the heat, of course, would be
swimming :} (Many) Hobbits might not do that, but Elves and Men
would, especially living on the coast. (edited)
[4:57 PM]
Dwarves, again, lived underground, so all they have to do to beat
the heat at home is walk away from the forge, heh. Out travelling,
probably just sat in the shade.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 4:59 PM
Continuing on withg Tolkien's intended placement of Middle-earth,
Gondor might have been far enough south to be on the northern edge
of the Doldrums (about 30 degrees North and South), otherwise
known as the "Horse Latitudes." Harad would have been in the
desert zone of modern Earth.
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 5:00 PM
i d try to persuade Manwe to make a bit wind
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
30 degrees North is associated with the desert belt typified by
the Sahara and the Mojave/Sonoran deserts in the Northern
Hemisphere...and the Atacama Desert in the Southern Hemisphere.
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:03 PM
Any other comments on the topic before I let us go to
Aftermeeting?

My caves should be nice and cool-ish.
[5:07 PM]
Unless they're... too deep.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
Like the one that Gandalf fell into along with the Balrog...
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:08 PM
That was actually pretty cold at the bottom, I think?
[5:09 PM]
So deeper than that, even, perhaps.
Arien Valar — Yesterday at 5:09 PM
The Balrogs fire was quenched
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
You are both right...the water into which Gandalf fell was, as he
said, colder than death...but that does not make geologic sense,
nor does do a lot of other things in the LoTR. Sometimes one must
set aside scientific reason to read fantasy....
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:11 PM
The Balrog fell into water. Even hot water is going to put out a
fire :}
[5:12 PM]
But yeah, water was cold.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:12 PM
"Cold it was, as the tide of death..."
[5:13 PM]
We humans have delved mines deep enough that working in them is
too hot...even in the depths of winter.
Ar-Pharazon-V — Yesterday at 5:14 PM
So could those depths and that lake have an ungeological reason to
be cold? Sauron's influence? "Tide of death" indeed?
Eonwë Valar — Yesterday at 5:15 PM
Even Balrogs need to take a swim?
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 5:16 PM
Gandalf's full quote: "Cold it was as the tide of death, almost it
froze my heart." Two Towers, "The White Rider."

Here is the introduction to the meeting Program:1,913th
Bi-Annual Meeting of the Middle-earth Historical Society
University of South Harad,
Umbar, Far Harad
Súlìmë,* 3020
Welcome to Far Harad! Given the
events of the tumultuous year of 3019, it is with a great deal
of pleasure that the Program Committee has put this conference
together for the Society, and reinstituted the Society’s
Bi-annual meeting. For the first time in many years, speakers
have volunteered papers from a wide swath of Middle-earth, and
the varied sessions that will be presented at this year’s
conference reflect the wide-range of interests of the attendees.
This program provides a list of the concurrent sessions at the
meeting, with an approximate time for the start of each
presentation within each topic area. The Program Chairman, Prof.
Hamforth Hardriddle of the University of Arnor in Fornost, would
like to thank his numerous associates, and Program Committee
members, namely Prof. Har-asunah Hafez of the Institute for
Advanced Analytical Analysis in Umbar, Dr. Kinmo Keleborion of
the Lothlorien State University, and Frau Prof. Doktor Nephel
Elerondiel of Imladris University, in Rivendell. For the first
time in our long and gloried history, several papers will be
presented by our distinguished colleagues from The Shire, in
northern Arnor. We have not had contact with the scholars of The
Shire in many a year, and were delighted to see several
submissions by individuals from that distant land.

Personal gaming report!
[7:03 PM]
For (non)flashgaming, a bunch of oldies again... so let's
give a rather unique out of them.
Sandalf13 — Yesterday at 7:10 PM
Aiya Ar! I am back from Eiseley. It is beastly hot outside...but
very dry, at least...hardly worked up a sweat going to the Library

new cactus cuttings.

Blizzard gaming:
[7:16 PM]
Heroes of the Storm:
Logged in to get the mount, as well as several portraits and
banners etc for a few missed anniversaries, apparently. 6 and 6.5,
at least. Didn't think you could get those after the fact.
Hearthstone:
130 on the reward track, gold keeps piling up Got the last
few legendary quests complete, getting me more packs and a warrior
skin, Roaster Magni, with a bbq-ing king Magni, looks nice
Am using it for the warrior now instead of pirate Garrosh. Just
gotta keep the good vibe going!
[7:18 PM]
Brawl is Tinyfin Mode, where you can only use basic, common and
rare cards. I'm sure there's plenty of excellent combos with
commons and rares throughout the expansions, but personally I went
with a classic hunter secret deck, using all the secrets I could
find and a few other secret-related cards.
[7:20 PM]
It didn't win everything, but was pretty successful. You ramp up
secrets' effects so fast, the opponent usually can't keep up, and
then finish it with some summons that get upgraded by your
secrets. And being hunter, you're always able to keep up the
pressure anyway.
As for mercenaries... hoo, quite an adventure this week.
[7:21 PM]
Leveled a bunch of heroes, including getting Vol'jin and Niuzao to
30. Also got enough coins to unlock Chi-Ji, another of the 4
Celestial mercenaries.
But what had me stumped for a while tonight was a quest for
Tyrael, to complete the Secret Cow Level in the Barrens.
[7:22 PM]
Even though just on normal, and most of the fights being quite
easy, the final bossfight was rather tough. Took me 3 tries to
complete the bounty, and needed to make a specialized team for it.
Ultimately just barely scraped through it with fire-damage mercs I
had available.
[7:23 PM]
Hopefully I won't get another quest like that in a while
Though supposedly Chi-Ji, the one I unlocked tonight, is good for
that boss as well.
[7:24 PM]
WoW:
Raiding continuing, though we're still struggling with heroic
Rygelon.
Got him down to 43% tonight, which is... not much of an
improvement over last week, but it's all in the practice.
[7:25 PM]
I did decide to do some more missions for augment runes from here
on, so I can throw those at the raidfights. Every bit helps at
this point.
[7:27 PM]
Weekly is arena skirmishes. Yet, the brawl is Comp Stomp (arathi
basin), and brawls always count for bg and arena weekly quests,
which means, with Comp Stomp being by far the easiest brawl, and
both giving equal honor for the first of the day, I simply did a
brawl and a skirmish-win every day, completing it in 5 days
without too much frustration
And I got honor level 98 in the process. Not sure what the level
100 reward is, but we'll probably soon find out!
[7:28 PM]
Finally alting! Got level 60 with my paladin (yay!) which I
followed up by gathering up some appearances that had been waiting
for her, though less remained than I thought, so it was done
quickly.
[7:29 PM]
Then I finished Ardenweald with her, including Ysera's
procession... almost shedding a tear along the way, such a great
story moment.
[7:30 PM]
Decided against doing the side questlines at 60 first, instead
heading straight over to Revendreth, where she did the
introduction and got dropped into the Endmire, where optional
quests are already piling up, apparently! One more main zone to go
before she can start her covenant campaign.
And that's my report for the week!
